What Does ‘Diversity’ Mean to You? The Answer May Depend on Your Race

Medical Xpress, August 8, 2014

Diversity in the workplace has been a contentious issue for many employers. In May 2014, Google disclosed that 70% of its employees are male, and in terms of racial diversity, the company is 61% White, 30% Asian, 3% Hispanic and 2% Black. Does that breakdown sound diverse to you? If not, what would an ideal diverse team look like? A study publishing in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin sheds light on the complexity in defining diversity.

{snip} Researchers from the University of California at Irvine, the University of Virginia, and the University of California at Los Angeles collaborated to study how Whites, Asian Americans, and African Americans evaluate diversity. The research included three studies, and participants were asked to rate the diversity of various groups of people that were presented as a team at work.

Studies 1 and 2 found that in-group representation–that is, seeing members of one’s own race included in the group–increased perceived diversity, even when the number of racial groups and number of racial minority group members was held constant. Asian Americans perceived more diversity in a group that included Whites and Asian Americans than a group that included Whites and African Americans. African Americans rated a group with Whites and African Americans as more diverse than one with Whites and Asian Americans.

Studies 2 and 3 showed that concerns about discrimination play a role in why racial minority group members are especially attuned to whether their race is represented. Study 2 showed that in-group representation had a larger effect on diversity judgments made by Asian Americans who considered national statistics about discrimination against Asian Americans before judging diversity than those who did not. Also, the in-group representation effect disappeared when Asian Americans first considered national statistics about discrimination against African Americans; these individuals rated a team of Whites and African Americans as equally diverse as a team of Whites and Asians. Study 3 measured concerns about diversity and showed that it mediated the relation between team composition and diversity judgments.

The studies identified differences in how Asian Americans and African Americans judge diversity. In-group representation was generally more important to African Americans than Asian Americans, and in-group representation was equally important for African Americans regardless of whether they considered discrimination against African Americans, Asian Americans, or did not consider discrimination before judging diversity. {snip}

The research illustrates that people from different races may view the same team or organization and judge it differently in terms of whether or not it’s diverse. “Racial minority group members care whether or not members of their own race are part of a team. While the presence of other minority groups is better than no diversity at all, it’s not the same as having someone of your own race present,” Dr. Bauman says, “You can’t lump racial minority groups together and treat them as a monolithic whole. Each racial group has its own history and faces unique challenges, and it should not be surprising that they approach situations differently.” {snip}

So called “diversity” is in reality an Orwellian term that means, “there are too many whites” and “there must be fewer whites”.

Some time very soon, I know there will be pressure to force so called “diversity” on the NAACP, La Raza (the race), black firemen assns, black police assns, congressional black caucus, black student unions, etc.

I mean, so called “diversity” is our greatest strength, right?

  • To white liberals, diversity means 80% white liberal, 20% evenly divided between all the non-white groups of the world.

    • Veni Vidi Vici

Agreed, In a typical white liberal gated community that sounds about right…

      • SFLBIB

        A good one. LOL!

      • CalMark

Is there any evidence that shows the typical gated community resident to be liberal?

  • Tim_in_Indiana

Google disclosed that 70% of its employees are male, and in terms of racial diversity, the company is 61% White, 30% Asian

Didn’t we just read yesterday how Apple’s racial makeup almost exactly mirrors Google? Now watch as Google panders and pledges its commitment to more “diversity,” if it hasn’t already.

    • GM (Australia)

As I have asked previously, do Samsung or any of the other South Korean electronics giants have diversity targets?

      • Tim_in_Indiana

That’s yet another unfair advantage they have over us.

        • GM (Australia)

Not only an advantage over us, diversity is forcing what is left of USA industry to sign it’s own death warrant.

  • JohnEngelman

I feel ambivalent about diversity. I like ambivalence. It prevents fanaticism.

Anyway, if diversity is voluntary, for me it means my ability to investigate exotic cultures that fascinate me. If it is coerced, it means affirmative action that means fewer opportunities for me and those I care about.

    • GM (Australia)

If it were truly voluntary I would not really worry about it. But our latest experience with diversity has been totally incompetent, lazy, unhygienic, non-English speaking health care “professionals” (No doubt hired under government targets.)
They are mainly Asian & Indian, the Chinese “just OK’ and the Indians and Nepalese truly awful. Just what are they doing here???

    • David Ashton

Your personal individual pleasure in the disintegration of a predominantly “white Gentile” nation is of little interest to millions of your compatriots who can satisfy any sightseeing or research interests in less “ambivalent” ways. The Disunited State of Exoticas may suit you, but how many Americans would lay down their lives to protect your private hobby and self-centered tastes?

      • JohnEngelman

The United States has always been a multi racial country. It has always been fought for by men of different races. 250,000 black men fought in the Union Army during the Civil War. 50,000 were killed. I have read in an Atlantic article that virtually all men on American Indian reservations are military veterans. Most are combat veterans.

        • David Ashton

That’s why I said “predominantly”. The American Indians were born here before the whites developed the urban society you value, and the Negroes were forcibly imported. My main point holds.

With respect, I do not think you have much that is new to say to me on this site, and I do not care to say anything more in reply to you.

        • journey

So what? There’s nothing inherently virtuous in having a multi racial society. This country and any white majority countries keep progressing due to the IQ level of the majority of it’s population.

        • kikz2

i see you didn’t mention the blacks that fought for the Confederacy…….

        • bla bla bla

          • JohnEngelman

How can I respond to such a well worded, well reasoned, and well documented argument?

          • Don’t! Take the hint – you’re boring!

          • JohnEngelman

It is difficult to compete with someone as fascinating as you are, but I try.

          • Oh I don’t wish to be fascinating, Mister Engelman. No, I’m just tired of your nonsense. You’ve been at it for a long time and I’ll not hear of it any more. You’ve repeatedly revealed yourself to be anti-white and anti-gentile, and yet you still speak in such a rightous way. All I’m saying is enough!

    • I’m not ‘ambivalent’ about ‘diversity’ one bit. I despise it because it inevitably leads to the displacement of my race and dispossession of my white european culture and values. While I may enjoy Chinese and Mexican food now and then, I certainly don’t love it enough to have my entire country flooded with Chinese and Mexican people.

Besides, among whites there’s all sorts of proper diversity. Whites don’t all look the same, nor do they have precisely the same cultures and customs. There are wide differences between us as white people that’s more than enough to make life interesting and joyful.

Lastly, having fixed and certain opinions about ‘diversity’ doesn’t necessarily lead to “fanaticism.” Anything – whether good or bad, true or false – can lead to extremes and all sort of “fanaticism” – but this doesn’t have to be the case.

      • LHathaway

Wanting to say the pledge of allegiance and wanting people to get married could be considered ‘fanaticism’ to some.

      • David Ashton

Our Nordic Episcopalian Zionist who likes Chinese girls is blissfully unconscious of his own fanaticism, and instead of quoting the same passage repeatedly from Hoffer’s “True Believer” would do well to re-read the entire book, and ask himself: “Could any of this apply even to ME?”.

  • Lewis33

How can anyone say with a straight face that a company that has Asians as 30% of their workforce isn’t diverse? What they mean is “not enough blacks”. Newspeak gibberish.

  • Lewis33

This article is basically saying that words have one definition for rational people and another definition for black people.

  • Any surprises here? Pursuing a color-blind society is for whites only. Only whites are expected to honor and abide by it, but certainly not ‘minorities.’

Blacks and Hispanics can celebrate their racial heritage and take great pride in it. Whites cannot do so. They must always be ashamed and demoralized, always reminded of their evil ‘racist’ past and ‘colonial’ ways.

But this will not always be.

  • Periapsis

Diversity means to me NO whites at all, or genocide against whites. Nothing else.

    • kikz2

that definitely looks like how a lot of non-Whites want it to play out.

    • LHathaway

In schools where they are virtually no whites, or no whites, school assemblies praise diversity and commit themselves to having more.

  • it means no White people at all. It could be 100% no white and they still call it “diversity..

    • AndrewInterrupted

It’s really anti-White, hetero male, though. The LGBT and Feminists Nations have forged a non-aggression pact with the rest of the grievance industry parasites. And we all know how well those pacts turn-out.

  • David Ashton

Is the following analogy any good? There is a compact white wall made of 100 white bricks. Various white bricks are removed and replaced by a number of bricks of different colors. Each individual new brick is a compact unit, but the wall is no longer a compact unit. There is no agreeable new pattern to replace the white wall, and more and more bricks replace the white ones. The owners of the original wall who didn’t want it altered are now told that random mosaics are an improvement, whether they like it or not.

    • JInSanD

And many of those colored bricks are defective and many are piled up in the same place creating weak spots that need to be shored up by increasing the load on the white ones.

Google workforce: “61% White, 30% Asian, 3% Hispanic and 2% Black”

If each of the racial groups were the same in percentage at ~25%. It should finish Google off as a competitive tech company. Any aggressive tech company knows this. Having blacks and Hispanics each at 25% making 50% of the workforce at Google.

Sad and scary reality: white students are already below 50% nationally.

  • Bossman

I feel sorry for you white Australians. The countless hordes of Asia will just keep on coming to your country.

    • JInSanD

I feel even more sorry for us white Americans. The countless hordes of mestizos and blacks and arabs and muslims and asians will just keep on coming to our country.

      • David Ashton

I feel just as sorry for us white English. More and more and more overcrowding and Babel-babble threatening our once lovely land.

        • watling

If we persist in voting in governments that put out the welcome mat for third worlders then we’ve only got ourselves to blame.

          • David Ashton

            Include “we” out.

I am among those who have never voted for such governments. Anti-immigration parties have split the opposition vote in constituency after constituency. “Whoever you vote, you get the government, and if every first world elector refused to vote, someone would still get in.” At present UKIP is the best of a bad job, and a symbolic message if nothing else.

    • David Ashton

It is a risk with Indonesia sadly bursting at the seams just a short distance to the north. To their discredit, both Adolf Hitler and Ezra Pound said it didn’t matter much of the Japs eventually colonized that big island desert, but on this issue (despite being bullied as a ‘Bleddy Pom’ at school in Sydney decades ago) I prefer Old Oz to Ole Ez.

    • AndrewInterrupted

But, it’s OK when your wifey, Maria Conchita, helps her people inundate the U.S.? You are a sad useless troll.

Bottom line – the America some of us were lucky enough to grow up in is D-E-A-D.

    • David Ashton

The Past is Always Another Country, but reversals and improvements can happen if the will to live and act still exists. Where are the German towns in China, the French settlements in Algeria, the Palestinians in Israel?

  • Ograf

Diversity means the genocide of my people , designed by the masters of deceit and furthered by disgruntled savages who are about 5 thousand years behind in evolution.

  • Jo

Diversity to me is English, Irish, German, Swedish, Swiss, Polish, Italian, French, Austrian, Norwegian, Danish, and others of European ancestry.

I’ll go with what Professor Sowell observes, “I have never known a word to become absolute dogma, without a speck of evidence, the way ‘diversity’ has.”

  • none of your business

What does diversity mean to me? Simple, if I want to get a job I must check the black box on the application. That means I will get hired over the phone and told to report to HR on Monday to fill out the tax and other forms.

It also means that blacks have government and media permission to rob, rape and murder me and mine.

  • Leon NJ

A dark night sky is only worth looking up when there’s countless white stars to be seen.

      I like your icon.

I knew this great man, discussed his ideas and record with him, and regret there is no-one even remotely as brilliant in British politics today. His last words to me were: “I cannot stand by and let my country sink”, but the crew of our Titanic had other plans. Their “latest hope” is Bojo the Clown.

      • Leon NJ

That’s great. I kind of just discovered Mosley a few weeks ago when I was researching fascism. So far eveything I’ve read sounds pretty damn good…but those days are long gone and lost in the UK and pretty much everywhere else.

        • David Ashton

Mosley died in 1980 but spent the post WW2 period campaigning under difficult circumstances for a new European philosophy “beyond ‘fascism’ and ‘democracy'” as well as being the first major opponent of mass-immigration. The revisionist Keith Stimely provided a useful booklist for US readers, and two websites are devoted to OM. Skidelsky’s biography is fairer and more reliable than Dorril’s. There is a good selection of OM’s writings edited by Michael Quill. The Friends of Mosley publish a journal which defends his reputation against lies and tries to keep his policies fresh.

  • Paleoconn

I went to a city park once. There were muslims and there were Whites. One of our party said this is wonderful, so multicultural. There is nothing multicultural about it, unless of course multicult just means less of Whites. Which, of course is what it means, along with diversity. 100% diversity = zero Whites.

    • David Ashton

How “multicultural” is Mecca, or the Islamic State which Saudi Arabia could destroy in a fortnight but for some reason is not interested?

  • Whitey Smith

Diversity won’t stop until every last white person has been swept off the earth. When Nazis commited genocide the world gasped in disgusted. When people try to stop polititions from committing white genocide they are labeled racists. Step back and ask yourself why are we being told we need diversity.(white genocide)
