New LAFD Recruit Class Is Nearly All Male, Overwhelmingly White

The first new Los Angeles Fire Department recruit class in five years is nearly all male and mostly white despite repeated promises by the agency to diversify its ranks, according to figures released Monday evening by Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office.

The class of 70 firefighters, which is scheduled to begin training Monday, has just one woman and is 60% white. Twenty-three percent of the recruits are Latino, 11% are Asian American and 6% are African American, according to the figures.


“Mayor Garcetti thinks these numbers are unacceptable and wants the Fire Department to reflect the city it serves,” spokesman Yusef Robb said Monday evening. Los Angeles is 29% white, 49% Latino, 11% Asian and 10% black, according to the Census Bureau.

Robb said the mayor’s office is committed to working with the department  to improve recruiting and ensure future classes include more women and minorities.

Robb noted that recruiting for the class starting next week took place before Garcetti took office. Another class of trainees could begin later this year.


For years, the LAFD has struggled with racial discrimination and sexual harassment, allegations that have cost taxpayers nearly $20 million since 2005, city records show.

In November, a Superior Court jury awarded $1.1 million to a black firefighter who said he had endured three decades of discrimination. The verdict followed payouts totaling $1.5 million in other bias cases for the budget year that ended in June.

The department, which has 3,200 sworn personnel, has diversified its ranks over the last two decades, city officials say, noting that the last four fire chiefs have been African American.

But the agency is still 50% white, 31% Latino, 12% black and 7% Asian.


The new recruit class drew early criticism from the president of the Stentorians, a group representing African American firefighters on the department.

“What’s troubling to us is that the city, as well as the Fire Department, say they embrace diversity,” Nande Kalenga told the Fire Commission last month. At the same commission meeting, interim Fire Chief James G. Featherstone called LAFD’s recruitment efforts “embarrassing.”

Featherstone said the agency must be “a lot more aggressive” in appealing to a diverse set of applicants.

        He recently bragged about celebrating Hanukkah with his family (his mother is Jewish, making him Jewish). His father’s line is Mexican, even though the name is Italian. He was a shoo-in for election and the big donors love him because he’s part of their ethnic group. He’s another in weak, mousey LA mayor who’ll do the bidding of whoever funded his campaign.

    In 1990 living in Los Angeles I went to apply to be a firefighter. They refused my app stating they were not accepting apps from Whites. Point blank. End of discussion.

White men are the only group of people where government sanctioned discrimination is allowed and actually encouraged.         Not sure what I could have done back then. It does these days, as I’ve read about the outcomes. Back then I lacked Diversity training and summed it up to that’s just the way it is. I would never tolerate that today. If you don’t fight it, you lose, and they have their way. You may lose even if you do fight, but that’s not an excuse for us not to defend ourselves. That’s been lacking for too long.

          We need a well-funded umbrella legal defense organization. If 10 million people would kick in $10 a year, that would finance a lot of litigation.

          The whites who have made headway against this rotten system are public safety officers. They are people who are used to being cohesive and who are willing to act in their own defense. Others ought to take a page from their book. But they don’t. Everybody else get scattered all over the map.

      Going against the anti-White government power structure requires money and time and a lot of both. These cases drag out for years, in the hopes that you’ll be bankrupted. The Feds have the time and money, we don’t.

      Remember the White firefighters in Buffalo who sued for discrimination? They were finally awarded $2.5 million after FIVE long years. The firefighters in New Haven filed in 2003 and finally receive justice in 2009, they had to wait 7 years to receive justice, and “only” $2 million, and they were all already employed as firefighters at the time.

      Blacks who fight against White discrimination have the DOJ, Feds and black-specific organizations on their side with deep pockets they blacks don’t have to pay a personal price like Whites do.

    Many blacks do not have the smarts to pass the tests and learn how to fight complicated chemical and structual fires. Thus, we’ll see standards lowered.

    How much property damage and how many lost lives are associated with affirmative action of this kind? The problem is especially acute when a dimwit is put in charge of a fire brigade, barking out nonsensical orders to intelligent boots on the ground. If I were a white firefighter in LA I would look for a different line of work. Black incompetence kills.

        On local black talk radio, blacks complain that white’s help each other in study groups. If true, it never seems to occur to them that blacks could do the same thing. Of course, it’s just as likely they don’t want to study in black study groups. They want to study with the smart white guys.

      If you have a chance, stop by a public library and look through the FF and police civil service exams. Many questions are common knowledge (how many 10 ft hoses would you need to connect to reach a fire 40 ft away?). The others are questions that would require learning specific procedures, lingo, and equipment.

      Having lived in Southern Cal most of our lives, my wife and I are moving out of Ca when the market maxes out, I’m guessing in 3-5 years, give or take. Looking for a Conservative state to move to run by Conservatives. I don’t mind a little cold as we get occasional snow and ice here but something some-what mild would be preferable. Are you suggesting the states you mentioned are the best options, and any suggestions on websites that would help? Thanks.

        Frankly, I’m just running my angry mouth. But those three states are conservative, pro-2nd amendment, and still extremely White. And I believe there is an un-organized migration of various types of conservatives to these states. One Protestant preacher left his congregation to move there. He has a website, but I dont know the address. He seems to envision a White homeland there. I’m just blowing off steam, though I do plan to move there when my family obligations in NY are fulfilled (probably in a few years.) The Northeast is no place for White men.

          I’m planning to move to northern ID later this year from CT. I’ve been there three times to visit and look around and have decided this where I want to be. The cost of living is two-thirds of what it is here. Here’s another thing that it took me a while to notice: no police sirens at night. The demographics might have something to do with that.

          Thanks. I hope that those states stay White and conservative. I will be moving and it would be a waste to move to a place where non-desirables would eventually migrate. Whites Conservatives need to find areas they’ll protect from trash if at all possible. I envision decades from now, long after I’m gone, some form of secession or breakup similar to Yugoslavia. Other than that I’m not sure how to solve the issue of non-white invasion. That and/or White gated states. What is the alternative.

        I’d say come to Texas, but I think we have SRO at the present time. We also have plenty of illegals (thanks Mr. Bush and Mr. Perry), but if you live in Southern California you’re used to them.

            who work for us (we know that, but they don’t), FAIR is another organization who allows us to fax our reps. I’m sure that there are many good people and organizations who keep trying, but we know the drill – votes and “contributions” from the open-borders traitors. So, our wishes don’t count much and we’re being sold out every day. Never have I seen administrations like the past few that can’t wait to replace Americans.

    A department that is 50% White male, 31% Latino, 12% black, and 7% Asian (how cute!) sounds pretty diverse to me. I guess we need to eliminate all Whites to achieve true diversity. I like how it’s the LAFD’s problem that they are unable to recruit minorities. What is the LAFD supposed to do, go into the barrios and ghettos and start handing out job applications with a 100% guarantee of a job? Why not just BAN Whites outright from all public service jobs? If these non – White pigs are so horrified about diversity how about NOT calling the fire department for any services until White males are less than 10% of the department.

      I say it every chance I get. What they are supposed to do is reach out to those minority group member who are qualified but are choosing other careers, such as the military or law enforcement.

      Supposed to do. But not what they are doing. What they are doing is combing the underclass of the semiskilled and unskilled for applicants. When they fail to find any qualified firefighters, they blame “whitey” for making the test too hard.

      New York City recently carried out a vast outreach and found four qualified applicants. Whether they are people with high motivated, a sense of vocation for this special kind of work and the courage to perform in life-threatening situations, I don’t know. They’ll have to speak to that.

    LA is only about 28% non-Hispanic White. Including “Hispanic Whites” in the White category is inaccurate. Furthermore, West Asians are included as non-Hispanic Whites, so really it’s closer to 20% non-Hispanic/European White.

    Every time this issue comes up, I say the same thing. Non-whites who are qualified for firefighting largely are making other career choices. They are in the military and in law enforcement. Or they are choosing entrepreneurship or middle management. If some of these people cannot be persuaded to go into firefighting, don’t blame “whitey”. If fact, blame the the race hustlers who would rather not go out and persuade the qualified to pursue this career in larger numbers.

    Not to mention, I think there are still some white people living in Los Angeles. Is 42 whites out of 70 trainees such anomalous number? With 10 million people in Los Angeles County and 3.5 million in the city itself, if that’s how it works out, stop whining about it.

        I often think they lower the bar for driving tests. When I witness all the lousy drivers on the road who drive like they can barely operate a lawn mower I am suspicious that Behind the wheel driver’s tests are very dumbed down.

    Within the next 20 years the public will be less safe in the wake of disasters where Fire Fighters come to the rescue. We would be safer just learning basic First Aid measures on our own. I didn’t know LA was only 29% white. I knew Latinos were close to the majority, but I would think that Whites would comprise of at least 40% of the population. My things have changed rapidly in SoCal in the past 20 years.

    The idea that there is a competent, qualified black who can’t find work as a fireman is laughable. If he can tie his shoes and has fewer than ten felony convictions, some fire department somewhere will gladly take him on and (try to) train him, probably starting at a salary that a white guy would have after twenty years of service.

    They myth has always been that anyone can fight a fire and save lives, which is not true. Fighting fires is a legitimate science, as is EMT skills and both are considered such.

    Guess cities got tired of covering up for incompetent black and brown firefighters, especially when it comes to something so damaging and life threatening as a fire and EMT skills.

    Interesting. Four years ago I went to the Santa Monica police department on 2nd Avenue to register a complaint. Several officers were there and it was obvious that they had been drinking.Their breath reeked of alcohol. I pointed that fact out and they hurriedly shuttled the drunks off to another room.

    Yeah. Even low end jobs in ND pay well. Housing isn’t readily available but I build homes for a living among other things, so that wouldn’t be an issue. I’d have to test the weather there though and wonder if the job market there isn’t drawing a few undesirables. Must further research. Thanks.
