‘Students of Color Only’

Colleen Flaherty, Inside Higher Ed, September 16, 2013

A Texas Christian University professor reached out in an e-mail to a group of students he deemed to be “of color” to help them succeed in his class. But the move backfired with at least one student, who was insulted at being included for her perceived ethnicity.

“After I read it, I read the names [of the other recipients] and they were just Hispanic last names,” said a student of Santiago Piñón, assistant professor of religion. (The student asked not to be identified by name. ) The message, addressed last week to her and eight other students–a copy of which was obtained by Inside Higher Ed– invited them to a special meeting Piñón said he wouldn’t mind ending up as “a study session for my STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLY [emphasis his].”

Here is the full text of the e-mail:

“I thought, ‘Is this really happening?’” the student said. “I laughed, in shock, as my immediate reaction.”

The student said she doesn’t strongly identify as Hispanic, although her last name is of Hispanic origin and she is one-quarter Hispanic. She wondered how–so early in the year–the professor had found a group of students to approach, other than by selecting Hispanic-sounding names from the class roster. She said she also wondered, and doubted, whether her fellow “Understanding Religion: Society and Culture” students without last names of Hispanic origins had received the same offer.

That student said she liked the class and enjoyed Piñon’s teaching, but that his offer seemed unfair. {snip}

It’s unclear whether non-Hispanic minority students also were invited to the study session in a separate e-mail.

The student said she wondered what her friends would think, and posted it on Facebook, with the tag: “I straight up just got segregated by my own teacher. I’m 75 [percent] white.”

One friend said: “Wait is this a joke? Your professor is trying to have a study session for ‘students of color’ only?”

Another said: “Not trying to start anything, but if this had been an email saying he likes to meet with all the white students at the beginning of the semester, and then ended the email the way he did, but with WHITE STUDENTS ONLY, I guarantee you this would be all over the news in seconds.”

In an e-mailed statement, Piñon said that the intent of his e-mail was “misunderstood.”

“I should have been more clear in that the study group is open to all students,” he said. “My goal is to participate in and contribute to the [university’s] mission by being available to all students so they are successful in the classroom and beyond. I have always been open to having review sessions with an entire class or with smaller groups of students without excluding others. I want all my students to be successful and am willing to devote extra time to foster that success.”

Piñon continued: “I do like to offer myself as a resource to students (particularly those of color) who may face challenges and become discouraged; goal is to encourage and offer support, so I am troubled to think some students may have thought they were being excluded from a study session because that was not at all the intention. I have since sent an e-mail clarifying the misunderstanding.”

Well, isn’t this the natural progression with all special ethnic clubs on campus and elsewhere, all the “People of Color” rhetoric (I hate that term), other things for People of Color only, what else is new?

    • Truthseeker

As Craig Bodeker recently wrote on Vdare, the term “people of color” is meant to unite all of humanity…except whites. Given that whites are constantly excluded, you can’t really blame them if they start wanting to go their own way. The more of this racial garbage I see, the more the idea of an all-white society sounds like paradise to me. Obviously it wouldn’t be perfect, but when you consider the benefits (the freedom to do what you like without having to make provisions for minorities, fewer random acts of violence, no sense of emptiness that comes from having your heritage attacked by every institution, not having to avoid the truth for fear for social shame), it sounds pretty appealing.

      • Sick of it

Kick out the nutjobs who want diversity and it may be as close to paradise as we’ll get in the world.

      • kjh64

        “fewer random acts of violence,”

I read that 98% of the murders in New York City last year were committed by non-Whites. 96.5% of the murders in Chicago were committed by non-Whites. I’m sure it’s likely the same in other cities across America. There was a show called a day without a Mexican. Imagine a year without a minority? Imagine how much lower the crime rate would be? 99% of our no-go areas in cities would disappear. Imagine how much less social spending there would be on welfare, WIC, section 8 food stamps?

        “Obviously it wouldn’t be perfect”

True, an all-White society wouldn’t be perfect as you have bad White people. However, it would be a lot more manageable. Our cities and neighborhoods would be clean, peaceful and have crime rates comparable to that of Europe, well Europe before immigration. Once in awhile, you would have a White serial killer or rapist on the loose, once in awhile you would have a White or Whites shoot some people or commit some horrible crime but the averages of crime would be much lower. You would have a White underclass that leached off of welfare and was trashy and stupid but again, the trashy underclass would be much smaller. It’s a matter of degree. Minorities just bring a lot more of this.

        • Truthseeker

No disagreement here. I’d go even further and say that in an all-white society there’d be more trust among its members and more sense of duty. You’d see fewer people becoming welfare leeches because they’d have a sense that they’re better than that and have a responsibility to contribute something to their society.

In an all-white society, whites would be allowed to take pride in themselves and their heritage because there’d be no one around to claim that everything they are is a product of oppression and racism and yadda yadda yadda. Most white people today hate their race because the authorized truth of our age is explicitly anti-white and it’s been programmed into them. When I see young whites today embracing degraded cultural values and other such things, I can only wonder if the reason for it is because they carry a subconscious sense that their very existence is something to be ashamed of and that they have nothing to live for except fleeting self-destructive pleasures.

The “people of color” refuse to acknowledge the humanity of whites, because they either view us as their competition for the top spot or as generic people they can take for granted because we don’t have any feelings when it comes to race. Sadly, a lot of whites probably believe this about themselves too. The truth is, all of us need a sense of purpose, and a sense that the past events which resulted in our births were morally justified, or we devolve into self-hating garbage. If we want more people to rise up and make something of themselves, we need to encourage white pride, because for many Americans, being white is the only real ethnic identity they have. We also need to stand up for ourselves and get people to recognize that we are a distinct people group with its own distinct qualities. We want a society that is suited to our ways and will allow us to maximize our productivity, not one that’s modeled after the failed countries the “diversity” comes from.

      • kjh64

“the term “people of color” is meant to unite all of humanity…except whites”

True but it doesn’t. “People of color” POC are very tribal towards their own groups. Blacks don’t like or resent Hispanics and especially Asians and even African Blacks. Hispanics and Asians don’t like Blacks and/or each other in large numbers. Even those of the same race such as Chinese favor Chinese over Vietnamese and people from India look out for their own and so on. Multiculturalism is a mess.

    • NorthSea

I understand the military academies have segregated meetings.

  • Jefferson

The liberal media said in 2008 that the election of Barack Obama would bring in a new era of a more color blind America.

But since 2008, Nonwhites in this country have become even more racially tribal.

    • Sick of it

Overtly. They were already tribal. We should not be blind to the obvious.

  • D.B. Cooper

    There’s That Word again!

  • kjh64

“so I am troubled to think some students may have thought they were being excluded from a study session because that was not at all the intention. ”

Of course that was his intent and he said it loud and clear.

    • bigone4u

Yep, like the rest of them, he’s a liar trying to lie his way out of trouble. “I din do nuffins” said with a Mexican accent.

      • joesolargenius

The correct expression would be( estoy innocente ,esta un error , no intendes bien) or in English I am innocent ,it was a mistake, you didn’t understand me well.

    • Nathanwartooth

He even put it in caps and then denies it. What a piece of garbage.

    • John Ulfsson

I bet those white kids in the class will feel really welcome and happy to contribute (he’ll make them feel like complete garbage)

    • NorthSea

      Let the clarifying (back-pedaling) begin.

  • bigone4u

I thought it would be Texas before I read the story. Texas Hispanic educators are so unbelievably anti-white you would have difficulty understanding it unless you experienced, as I have. Most of them secretly or even openly espouse reconquista, really wishing whites could be expelled from the southwest. Nothing will happen to this prof even though he is a racist ***h**e.

    • The Tejano Reconquistas always forget that white use of nuclear weapons in such a conflict would result in Mexico City becoming a deep lake again. It is a pity that the B41s were decommissioned 37 years ago. One of the U-238-jacketed Y1 models would be uniquely suited for this.

    • kjh64

Of course if all Whites were expelled from the Southwest, then it would look just like Mexico and these Texas Hispanic educators would be scrambling to cross the new American border “for a better life”. Once allowed in by sympathetic Whites, they would start the process all over again.

  • APaige

“Discuss the exam”?…means given answers to the exam.
    “Challenges”?…means college-level coursework.
    “Equality”?…means preferential treatment.

  • Andy

Meanwhile, at my college far away, Spanish students are being subjected to “Harvest of Empire”, a movie showing how racist, oppressive America ruined Hispanics’ countries and forced them to head north.

    • Sick of it

It’s amazing that things continue to get so much worse that I become incredulous hearing about some of the latest developments. The insanity is multiplying.

    • kjh64

“how racist, oppressive America ruined Hispanics’ countries and forced them to head north.”

What a bunch of nonsense. Latin America was a basket case long before the USA existed. There counties are “ruined” because their own Hispanic people ruined them and they head North to leach off the White man to escape the mess they made. The USA has been giving huge amounts of money and foreign aid to Latin American countries and they’d be a lot worse off without the USA.

  • borogirl54

I wonder if she invited Asian Americans as well as blacks and Latinos.

    • Northerner

Nope. The article says that the recipients of the email were just Hispanics.

  • dd121

Thought that was illegal. Wait, since Obama came to power rules/laws they don’t like are ignored without consequence.

  • Diversity Awareness Brigade

We celebrate this “new segregation.” How can we just not pay for it, though? Or maybe it’s worth paying for, and paying for some iron clad segregation of our own at the same time.

    Equality, yeah, now’s the time.

  • ViktorNN

Multiply this incident hundreds of times over throughout our higher ed system.

Consider how so many whites who come from “unprivileged” working class backgrounds don’t get the benefit of any special study groups for “WHITE STUDENTS ONLY” taught by white professors who want to make sure that white kids get special help.

If you’re poor and white in this new emerging non-white America, you’re effed.

    • Sick of it

The powers that be are working on impoverishing all of us, so yeah we are screwed.

  • Spartacus

Muds have never been capable of anything, and they never will regardless of how many “color-only” classes you give them. It’s not something that can be wished away by the race-traitor imbeciles, it’s a fact .

    • ThomasER916

      Truth is racist.

      Racism is anti-white lies.

      • “Truth is racist”.

Why not? Our opposition has already introduced the term “hate facts”. Think about that one for a little while.

  • In the original, you will find there’s an organization called American Association for Affirmative Action. I wonder, do they, Alcoholics Anonymous and the American Automobile Association share the same HQ? AA-AAA-AAAA. Don’t mistake it for a battery store.

    • Hispanics don’t get AAA, heck they don’t even get DL’s or insurance.

  • Easyrhino1

As always, had the races been reversed……………..well, you know the rest.

  • ThomasER916

Look at the NYC Transit. It’s a total mess, going bankrupt, and it’s 96% colored.

  • All hail the yellow, black, and brown …..

  • Sick of it

Blacks and Hispanics have already done these things in various places. Shreveport city jobs will go to black people. Same in my town.

  • Johnny Squire

I guess it’s time for whites to begin the long march to Ft.Worth to try and break the new color barrier.

  • Greg Thomas

Another said: “Not trying to start anything, but if this had been an email saying he likes to meet with all the white students at the beginning of the semester, and then ended the email the way he did, but with WHITE STUDENTS ONLY, I guarantee you this would be all over the news in seconds.”

  • gemjunior

What a scumbag. He can meet with as many of them as he wants and it won’t do much good anyway.

  • Greg Thomas

Yet all hell would break lose if they wanted to start a White student union. This is why a White student union is needed where ever where diversity is found! The La Razas hate Whites.

  • Greg Thomas

He said it twice, once in all caps and yet he will be able to deny what he said and avoid any repurcussions. This guy is a bigot and racist and should be terminated.

  • Ella

I bet the professor will not get fired for his bigotry. I also predict that only a few students of colour showed up for the free exam answers. This sounds about right in which the professor reveals his desperation of passing, ill-prepared nonwhite students who rarely come to class.

  • Ella

He got caught. The academia Left does not even attempt to conceal their real intentions.

  • bubo

“I should have been more clear in that the study group is open to all students,” he said.

Then why type, STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLYat the end of your message you hypocritical beaner?

    • ThomasER916

Stop telling them they’re hypocrites, racists, and bigots. No one gives a crap! Start fighting them or just STFU!

  • GeneticsareDestiny

“I should have been more clear in that the study group is open to all students,” he said.

Who does he seriously think this is going to convince after we all saw the way he emphasized “of color” in all caps? Why is he even bothering? He’s probably not going to get into trouble with the university anyway. They’ll probably just tell him to be less explicit next time so he’ll have plausible deniability.

  • John Ulfsson

Asians seem to be taking the place that whites did in social justice circles. (the planners, movers and shakers) presumably due to their high IQ.

  • NorthSea

Seems like the prof was clear enough before he got caught and began “clarifying”.

  • Freedom Hayak

So let me get this straight, his message to “STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLY” was misunderstood because what he really meant was “all students” and most people just aren’t smart enough to understand his meaning?

  • Romulus

An immediate and bald face lie! Clearly he’s backtracking as he states “students of color only”

“STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLY” Of course he didn’t mean any exclusion by such a comment. Anyone who could possibly think he did must be racist, right?

  • Alexandra1973

I tan easily and I’m still a bit tan. Am I a person of color?

  • Alexandra1973

Maybe he’ll blame it on his bad English.

  • An “Assistant Professor”. That means he doesn’t have tenure. How nice.

    • ThomasER916

After this stunt they’ll give him tenure immediately. That’s how it works. Hate whites, Christians, and the Western world? Tenure. Being a Jew is also a plus.

  • TheAntidote

This assistant professor of color is a professor of religion. It is a Christian College so I assume he was imparting tenets, doctrines and beliefs of Protestantism. If he is espousing the type of segregation in ministry the Baptists had for almost two hundred years, but were forced to chuck after integration, then I want to join the church. Halleluljah! I’m saved.

  • TheAntidote

As long as they continue to viciously attack the White Man from time to time, and always vote brown or black, they will be tolerated and allowed to stay on the bus. However, when the White man is completely marginalized the East Asians will have to join him in that lonely spot.

  • Ella

It’s about money! Universities or CC receive special Federal grants to help retain students of colour. There are special study programs that supposed to target their high-risk nonwhite population. As you can see, Whites, the tax payers, are on the losing end.

  • Bunky

“In an e-mailed statement, Piñon said that the intent of his e-mail was “misunderstood.”
“I should have been more clear in that the study group is open to all students,”
That’s why he wrote “STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLY” in his email.
    What an a$&!
