‘Strength from Stillness’: Rosa Parks Statue Unveiled in US Capitol

Erin McClam, NBC News, February 27, 2013

More than half a century after she refused to give up her seat on an Alabama city bus, Rosa Parks has an immovable place in the U.S. Capitol—the first black woman to be honored with a statue there.

President Barack Obama and congressional leaders from both parties said at an unveiling Wednesday that the depiction was fitting: Parks is shown seated, hands clasped in front of her, eyes fixed forward.

“Rosa Parks’ singular act of disobedience launched a movement,” Obama said. “The tired feet of those who walked the dusty roads of Montgomery helped a nation see that to which it had once been blind.”

On Dec. 1, 1955, Parks, then a 42-year-old seamstress, broke the law by refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a packed bus. Her arrest touched off a yearlong boycott of the bus system, a turning point in the civil rights movement. In 1956, the Supreme Court banned segregation on public transportation.

Parks died in October 2005, at age 92, and would have turned 100 this month.

On Wednesday, Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., and the highest-ranking black member of Congress, called her “the first lady of civil rights, the mother of the movement, the saint of an endless struggle.”

{snip}

The statue of Parks, 9 feet tall and in bronze, will be in Statuary Hall, where the House of Representatives met in the early 1800s. It is part of a collection of 100 in five locations in the Capitol.

Among the others in Statuary Hall are William Jennings Bryan and Daniel Webster. House Speaker John Boehner pointed out that the statue of Parks will be “right in the gaze” of that of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. He said her unassuming presence should inspire people to “draw strength from stillness.”

The sculptor was Eugene Daub of San Pedro, Calif.

She was a commie who was used as a weapon against Traditional Americans by the usual suspects. Too bad the statue is in a place where it can’t be sh at upon.

White icons conquered half the world or invented flight or discovered new continents… The quintessential black icon….refused to give up a bus seat? Don’t liberals and blacks find that a little bit awkward?

    • So CAL Snowman

They are not intelligent enough to know that they should be ashamed that the best heroes they can come up with are a two bit con man that loved prostitutes and a communist that refused to give up her seat. We have Magellan, the Wright Brothers, Edison, Tesla, etc. they have Rosa Parks and MLK! Advantage : White people (unless you are a liberal).

      • MekongDelta69

I’m very offended. You left off the “Justice[sic] Brothers” and Calypso Louie. You need to brush up on your ‘History O’ Color’.

But don’t worry – tonight at 11:59 pm, you can celebrate Black History Minute to catch up on this. I doubt you’ll need the entire minute, but hey, I’m a generous kinda guy.

        • Katherine McChesney

She also attended the Highland School.

        • The__Bobster

No, MLK, was like a shoebox. He took all colors. One of his parishioners once went after him for seducing his wife.

          • LaSantaHermandad

You forgot my personal favorite… I was driving a pickup with an “iffy” carb across West Texas in the dead of night. A sign loomed up in the darkness warning the next town was 166 miles away. I said to myself, “Oh God… I`m Lindbergh!”…

      • Varg Vikernes

Whites in general are not intelligent.

      • You forgot Malcom X. and OJ Simpson.

      • sbuffalonative

Blacks essentially have three heroes: King, Parks, and now Obama. Internationally, they have Mandela.

Their achievements boil down to ‘standing up to the white man’ and ‘challenging the white man’s rules’.

Blacks have little to cling to so they grasp at straws.

        • In Aaron Dixon’s book about his days as a Black Panther, “My People are Rising,”.he freely admits that the black “activists” in the Bay Area in the late sixties and early seventies were essentially violent criminal enterprises. After four decades, he still admires them for “shaking up the white power structure.” To blacks, a functioning social infrastructure is “oppressive,” and if they are given a tenth-rate introduction to Marxism, they will take to heart the injunction, “All that exists should be destroyed,” and not bother with the rest.

        • StillModerated

Our choices seem sort of lame compared with Idi Amin Dada, Mobutu Sese Seko, and Robert Mugabe.

          • LaSantaHermandad

It has been reported that under Idi Amin Dada, the rivers of Uganda were full of morbidly obese Nile Crocodiles; the Crocodiles being “full of ” his opponents.

      • guest

We also have Edward Teller and Robert Oppenheimer. Only whites can have Teller and Oppenheimer on our side and still lose against a nobodies like MLK and Rosa Parks. We need to start acting like our ancestors and decide to win this fight. I hope this Rosa Parks statue is someday melted down and turned into cartridges and artillery shells.

    • JackKrak

Blacks being praised for pioneering achievements in the field of sitting and staring straight ahead?

      Sounds about right.

Have Letalvus Cobbins and LeMericus Davidson been convicted at their second trial or did the first Judge’s actions cause both Channon & Christopher to be resuscitated ergo no crime? Either way these two mayates will become heroes to Duh Bleck Comoonity.

Yeah , black people being obstinate and stubborn and their own worst enemy .
      Who would have thought it.

    • The Worlds Scapegoat

Almost every math and scientific formula or theorem is named after a white person. Blacks have nothing. I cannot think of a single thing attributed to blacks that I could use or want.

    • LaSantaHermandad

I’ve read ( true?) that Rosa had leftists connections and that the entire incident was preplanned. It was not an impromptu incident.

  • To play devils advocate, it was Ida B. Wells who was the first ‘Rosa Parks’. Parks deliberately got arrested so her and MLK would start trouble. Regardless, the ‘element’ on buses always seem to migrate to the back of the bus.

    • Johnny Clay

On every bus or subway car I’ve ever ridden on, the blacks always go straight to the back.

      • Katherine McChesney

Haha….they know their place even today.

      • crystalevans

The back of the bus is the best part of the bus. It is often the roomiest part of the bus.

        • Tom Iron

They go as far back as possible because they know, no one can get behind them there and they can come up behind everyone else.

        • It is also the farthest
away from the bus driver so they can use and sell drugs.

      • Sean

        The black of the bus.

    • Skincognito

Sub-Saharans like the warmth and privacy of the back. They can curse and rap in comfort.
      A lil slice of home.

      • Johnny Clay

Or play their i-pods with headphones cranked up to 10 so they can aggravate everyone else on the bus and dare someone to ask them to turn it down.

  • newscomments70

This “civil rights” cult seems a bit ridiculous after awhile…what about all of the whites who are raped and murdered by blacks every day? I would rather focus on that. Yes, some years ago blacks had to sit in the back of the bus. Now, every day, whites are attacked by blacks on the bus, and no one does anything about it.

    • StillModerated

We we reach 6,000,000 victims of ~egro crime, we can erect a holocaust memorial.

      • LaSantaHermandad

We’d better not wait to reach that figure. The time for talk is over. Nobody’s listening. It’s time to make noises that everyone will hear.

    • LaSantaHermandad

Strange because I remember in Philly on the SEPTA lines Blacks always headed for the back of the bus; especially duh “youfs” because they could engage in more more mischief.

  • Cultural Marxists busy themselves replacing icons of America’s history.

    • And sadly, most of them are self-loathing whites.

      Hey Kenn…..

  • Uh-Oh

Would anyone care to give me odds on the date of the first appearance of gang-related grafitti on one of the statues, or the first violent black crime within sight of one of the statues? When Ms. Parks died, I overheard a conversation among a group of male inner-city youths who didn’t know who she was until one of them finally remembered it was she who “invented the underground railroad.”

    • cali

They better put the statue in a white neighborhood or somewhere with tight security or her people will probably try to steal it.

      • HamletsGhost

Yep, the price of copper being what it is, that statue is worth more “dead” than “alive”.

  • crystalevans

Rosa Parks was not the first black who refused to give up their seat to a white person. She was chosen because she was the best person for the test case. She was employed, married and of good character. From what I have read, many of the so called Civil Rights leaders did not think much of Parks at all.

    • liberalsuck

She was a communist NAACP plant, but besides the point, have you noticed that since that time, the ‘civil rights’ blacks marching were all black men? Why didn’t they have any black women speak at their marches?

      • crystalevans

The only one that did some speaking was Mrs. King.

        • Bill

Yes, and now she demands royalties every time MLK is mentioned, or she speaks, or even one line is quoted from one of his speeches. And she gets it. Blacks sure know how to ride on the coat tails of everybody else. Her only gift was closing her eyes to her husband’s serial adultery and sodomy.

          • Ed

The same can be said for many White women who had influential husbands.

      • Johnny Clay

And where were the black parents when their children were being forcibly integrated into white schools, and the children had to run the gauntlet?

    • She didn’t have good character. She was a lazy, Marxist, trouble making fraud. She may have dressed right and spoke proper English (which modern blacks having abandoning both) but deep down inside, she had a souless black heart. An anti-Christ.

    • HamletsGhost

She was also a light-skinned black. The NAACP considered that important at the time. Blacks had to be shown as just people with really dark tans, not members of another sub-species.

I’ve heard that when Motown stars like Diana Ross were marketed to white America in the 60s, they were given elocution lessons to make them sound less “ghetto” in PR interviews. Now of course, it’s gone the other way, with white kids trying to out-black each other in their ghetto grunting.

  • josh

That sculptor is such a pathetic ass-hat. He hopes people will be inspired. LOL!I’d like to see a statue of the black kid attacking her,now that would inspire some discussion of reality!

  • Paleoconn

Parks’ little show was staged. They recruited another black woman but she wouldn’t do, because of her spotty history and morals and lifestyle. So they turned to the supposedly pristine Parks, who was a commie actually. She really cashed out on this, I bet she never had to buy a meal anywhere for the rest of her life, and she is honored as a saint is, or rather as MLK is. Our world is upside down.

    • liberalsuck

It was staged, just like every other leftist event before then and since then has been staged. Too bad the conservatives aren’t catching onto that. All they do is invoke ‘civil rights’ people to give credence to their causes. I’m thinking, “Wait a minute. Just a generation or two ago you were speaking against people like her, now all of a sudden you are kissing up to people like her? What’s going on?”

    • Defoe

“So they turned to the supposedly pristine Parks, who was a commie actually.”

You are quite right. She was a trained Marxist activist. Well documented.

House Speaker John Boehner pointed out that the statue of Parks will be “right in the gaze” of that of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy.

So he’s trying to annoy a statue? Is this a sign of mental illness or what?

    • MikeS

Yes, it is a sign of mental illness of the self-inflicted type with only one known cure so far discovered…..

    • Johnny Clay

Boehner is a weepy girly-man without a spine. The GOP should elect a speaker with a set of stones.

Speaking as a hand painted tile man, Politics aside, I find it well done . The artist knows what the message is and conveys it well through the facial expressions. I`d like to see him do one of the Old Man leaning against Gun Tub Aft. P.S. I din`t read this one as I din`t want any verbal message from the artist to poison the visual. So please don`t tear my leg off… Thanx!

Right next to the Parks statue, they should have a Jospeh Skipper statue. Skipper is the black man who broke into Parks’ Detroit home when she was 81 years old. He recognized her and even said, “You’re Rosa Parks!”. The 28 year old then proceeded to severely beat down the 81 year old Parks so that he could steal $53 dollars from her.

I have heard that Rosa Parks hated MLK because he came to Montgomery after the incident and took most of the credit even though he was not involved in any way..

    • Bill

How much credit did she think she deserved? All she did was rehearse (imagine a white man having to REHEARSE) how to get on a bus, plunk her black butt down, and refuse to move. And for THAT she gets put in a hall along with major statesmen, patriots, political leaders and presidents??????? America is indeed insane and in it’s last days.

  • Simonetta

Here in Portland, Oregon the city felt compelled to re-name a street after this woman, even though she had never lived, worked, or even visited here. They must have felt that they had to just do -something- to show how much we here love our saintly negros. So we now have Rosa Parks Way. Which is not to distant from Rose Park Way, another street here.

And it intersects with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard, which gets fully spelled out on street signs just like that. MLKB (as it gets written) used to be Union Avenue. And it ticks me off that the name was changed. After all, Union Ave was named after the 350,000 white men who sacrificed their lives so that blacks could be freed from perpetual slavery, while MLKB was named after one guy who died so that all people could share the same drinking fountains.

Last night I was looking at the full moon and the thought hit me that sooner or later, our righteous African-American cousins are going to demand that we rename the moon after the good Reverend Doctor. No longer will it be just ‘the moon’. No, from now on, it must be known and referred to as the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Memorial Moon. After all, we got there first, our flag is there, and therefore we have the right to rename after the greatest American who ever lived (and will ever live). It’s only fair to honor this greatest person in all history with this gesture of our eternal and endless love for his wisdom and guidance that he has bequeathed to us throughout our period of shame and darkness.
    Indeed!

    • Mentious

The Whites of Portland are certainly in the full grip of an induced mania. I was astounded that in the great park near to Northwest the only monuments were to Native Americas — not any to the White men who created the park. (And who love the very idea of parks.) I guess it made sense when I saw the park also featured a “holocaust” museum.

There is a mural painted on the side of Trader Joe’s in Northwest. It shows an “early Portland” scene of a seaside city with a clipper ship (perhaps Astoria). All of the figures shown in it are African-American. (The paint is a bit faded but if you get up close to the picture this is clear.) If you look at the signature of the artist, it’s two names. One of them is you-know-what. Just sayin.

Meanwhile if you go into the old historic restaurant on 23rd and Hoyt now owned by the McMennamin Brothers, there are also murals is there. A lot of the white figures shown in the murals are curiously Ashken-z. Among these tableaus are white women with the notable Ashky look — apparently historic figures in Portland associated with the building — and they are show consorting with blacks in things like New Orleans-style jazz parades. (Yeah, the old ladies marching with trumpet playing African Americans). You can look at one mural showing one of these “white” ladies reading bedtime stories to another who she is “putting to bed.” In very small letters you can read the title of the book: It’s something like “Bedtime Tales from Mao.” I have photos of all this weirdness.

Meanwhile miscegenation is high fashion for white women here, almost as popular as getting blighted by permanent body graffiti, or men getting body-destroying African earlobe-stretching plugs. (I don’t even want to know the ‘correct’ word for this disgust.)

Of course, the greatest outrage here is the unjust affirmative action laws that guarantees jobs to non-whites and homosexuals. Within a few years the businesses and restaurants are bizarre place that do not reflect, at all, the natural ethnic makeup of the area. I recently went through Fred Meyers during the day shift (prime shift of the seniority) and every checkout clerk for some eight lanes was a black or Latino. At the same store the male staff appears to be over 50 percent homosexual. This morning at the Starbucks the staff was 66 percent lesbian. It’s easy to tell because they, feeling they are a protected class, are loud and proud and part of that is freely dressing the part and having the look. A lot of these affirmative action darlings really get their queer on.

      It’s unnatural and unjust.

My Portland report. It’s an unholy and unnatural mess here. I was really sad I didn’t get to really experience the old Portland. I just saw glimpses of it when I came here 5 years ago. Enough to joyfully remember the old America. But with this atrocious law the city changed rapidly.

Rosa Parks was an American icon who is certainly worthy of this statute. Well deserved.

    • bigone4u

Sorry pal, but I think a white guy who gives up his bus seat for a white pregnant woman deserves to be honored more. As does a Boy Scout who helps a little old lady across the street. Get it?

Thank you Reginald. Please post more often.

      • Cherry Bomb

        Good job engelman.

Let’s encourage more blacks and Asians to infiltrate this site and drive off regular posters and donaters so we can shut this site down. Who needs the ADL and SPLC when we have you shilling for the demise of American Renaissance. The dumb, racist whites who read this site need to be put in their place according to the likes of you and since AR doesn’t delete your posts, I assume they are in agreement.

The TOO site no longer accepts comments because of infiltration by trolls just like you. New Nation News, another pro-white site recently shut its doors as well. Others are under pressure to shut down or are being threatened.

Let’s make it three for three so there won’t be any pro-white sites left.

So keep encouraging blacks, hispanics and Asians to post here and tell them you’ll cover for them. But you’d better tell them to start donating because sites like this aren’t cheap to maintain and won’t be open after you and your nonWhite minions have driven everybody off.

congratulations. Another white site bites the dust. You must be so proud.

        • JohnEngelman

This is why New Nation News recently shut its doors: “This website and the NNN Reporters Forum have been down since 1 February 2013 due to a criminal terrorist attack on the Webmaster by a group of criminal terrorists claiming to be part of the international criminal terrorist fag ‘hive’ of so-called ‘anonymous’ hackers. I’ll be reporting on this – but I am still recovering from an ‘identity theft’ criminal terrorist attack on myself, my family, friends and neighbors.”
          http://www.newnation.org/

I think that is terrible. I hope New Nation News overcomes the problem soon.

This was one of the e-mails sent to New Nation News: “Your hateful and racist forum has been targeted. Your venomous hatred will no longer be tolerated.”

That sounds like some of the attacks that are directed against me on American Renaissance. You may have noticed I do not respond in kind.

I had never heard of New Nation News. I hope New Nation News recovers from this soon, that those responsible are apprehended and punished, and I look forward to accessing New Nation News myself.

Unlike the criminals who did this to New Nation News, and unlike those who have tried to prevent American Renaissance conferences, I welcome and enjoy participating in a free exchange of facts and opinions.

    • Uh-Oh

Icons get statues because they’re icons (ie, abstractions), and it’s important not to confuse the icon with the real person or the real events that made them famous. Christopher Columbus is an American icon and still a great story, but his alleged claim to fame is getitng foggier by the year. Ms. Parks’ “event” is so forceably contrived that ten years from now people will only know her from the statues.

    • blight14

      Yawn…………

      • Reginald

You can “yawn” all you want. It is exactly that type of arrogant, disrespectful, dismissive attitude toward Blacks and other non-Whites that will be the eventual disenfranchisement of bigoted Whites like yourself.

  • Mentious

Aha. With “stillness” they are likely trying to make an allusion to still-mind associated with meditation, Buddhism, and mysticism. Cheap trick. As if Rosa Parks was some dispassionate, desireless mystic and her refusal to budge was a kind of mystical inner stillness.

Sad thing is that for many New Age and yoga-oriented Whites, it will work. The ideal of renunciation of desires and humility they propound in all other connections gets suspended for this black woman, with her desire-laden obstinacy equated to Buddhist stillness. It’s like the artist wanted to project an affirmative-action form of Buddhism on blacks. A real Buddhist would have accepted the laws, not put himself forward, or striven with others.

I think it’s indeed a play toward esoterically oriented whites interested in yoga and such, and attempting to dress up Rosa Parks in language that appeals to them. Rosa Parks as Lao Tzu. Disgusting marriage of ideas, inappropriate.

  • blight14

Oh surely not ANOTHER fabricated fraud……

    http://rense.com/general68/rosa.htm

  • staged PR stunt only

Light skinned Parks is darker in her statue than real life. The whole thing is a total staged crock. The professionally dressed white male wearing coat and ties sitting behind her in the world famous photo is a laughable photo opt PR stunt by the media. Since when do white males in suits ride buses instead of drive their own cars? Does sitting in the front row make it better? Coloreds rode different buses that took different routes. Colored neighborhood routed buses is what Parks would have ridden anyway not a white bus. They are coloreds still aren’t they per the NAACP?

  • Terry

What is interesting is that I think that the sculpture is actually a Jew. That makes sense. Now we celebrate and put on a pedestal another communist, who had done nothing. She was taught to do what she did my her communist mentor, and the picture of her sitting on the bus was staged. I understand that it actually wasn’t they way we were told. I have read that she went to a white man that was sitting in the seat and told him to get out. What is interesting is that about 10 years before she died a black man broke into her apartment. Rosa Parks confronted him and he asked her, “Are you Rose Parks?” She said, “Yes,” so he proceeded to beat on her and he stole $53. That’s fitting for a filthy lying piece of garbage that she was. Even blacks don’t really care. You can take the black man out of the jungle, but you can’t take the jungle out of the black man.

  • Cali

Whatever. Blacks are so desperate for a hero they essentially make them up. This lady did not give up her seat on a bus. I actually done the same for several years while I was trying to be bullied at school. Can I get an award? Their first president and his cabinet of thugs are collapsing America like we have never seen in the history of this country. MLK plagiarized his thesis and several other papers (if he was white he would have NEVER received a doctorate), was an abusive womanizer but somehow had his files locked away until 2027. If you really research the many people they celebrate as inventors you discover they are frauds and almost never the original inventor. It is really sad to watch.

    • saxonsun

At least “his” dissertation comes with a warning that much of it is plagiarized. Considering the problems we have with blacks that is utterly amazing.

Yes, pc has even invaded the annals of DC Mall Art. Now you can see Rosa Parks held in the same esteem as Washington, Lincoln, and all the Vietnam Vets. Its only diversity I guess that guys that paid the ultimate price should be billed as equals to this bus rider.

  • JJCULLEN

I’d rather see a statue of the bus

  • Moe

I hope they didn’t put it in the Back Of The Park!

I wonder when the official mount rushmore for black icons ceremony will be now that they have their fifth member. 1. MLK 2. Rosa Parks 3. Biggie 4. Tupac 5. And the real life Django himself Christopher Dorner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Is mass transit safer or more dangerous to ride now? Answer, in many areas, especially some of the more “diverse” areas you wouldn’t want to use it unless you had no other alternative whatsoever.

  • StillModerated

She was modest, modest, …. Right Mr Daub(er), and Ms Parks had a lot to be modest about. It’s a crying shame she wasn’t born during black history month.

  • GERRY

I wonder if the “pigeons” will appreciate the Rosa Parks statue as much as the MLK statue? It must really irritate blacks to see their two majestic heroes suddenly turn white by the bowel movement of God’s creatures.

“sqrengfff from still-neh”, that’s just a black way of putting a positive spin on an indolent nature. White strength and industry built this country. Blacks only ever rioted , threatened to riot, and that is how they ever got anything.

Rosa Parks was the secretary of her local NAACP not the lowly seamstress as touted over the years, and she refused to give her seat to a elderly gentleman ,in other words she parked her ass in a handicapped seat and she refused to move like any descent person would . Some hero !
