Oakland Schools to Let Feds Monitor Discipline of Black Students

Stephen Ceasar, Los Angeles Times, October 1, 2012

The Oakland Unified School District and the U.S. Department of Education reached an agreement last week that would allow federal officials to monitor the district’s efforts to curb the number of out-of-school suspensions of its African American students.

The resolution, which the Oakland school board passed unanimously, closes an investigation by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights into whether African American students were disciplined more frequently and harshly than their white classmates. {snip}

Last school year, African American students made up about 39% of the district’s total enrollment but accounted for 63% of students with at least one suspension and 61% of those who were expelled, said Russlynn Ali, the department’s assistant secretary for civil rights.

That disparity and the practices that led to them are found across the country, Ali said. “They are not unique to Oakland,” she said.

The district plans to try to address disciplinary issues without suspensions, revise discipline policies, provide services for students at risk of dropping out and provide training for teachers and staff, she said.

The agreement will make sure the district works “to change the culture in schools and classrooms that too often gives rise to extraordinary rates of discipline,” Ali said.

Are there any whites in Oakland public schools?

By “white” here, I think they probably mean Hispanic.

    • The Worlds Scapegoat

Yes there are a few whites. They have to morph the districts so certain schools are not 99+% blacks.

Here in NYC the black and hispanic students and teachers make us proud with their exemplary behavior and Puritan work ethic.

I have no doubt this little brat attacked him.

Problem is, this big, beefy teacher is now going to rip off the taxpayers with a phony comp claim, telling us he’s too traumatized to work because a six year old kicked him in the shins.

Are we the only ones who understand that our Federal Government is now colonized by African voodoo warriors, aka black privileged Affirmative Action Diversity, aka “the beloved Other”?

  • Male students are disciplined more frequently than female students.

    Gender bias? Or genetic reality?

    • 5n4k33y3s

Gender bias. It isn’t useful to compare gender and race.

      • Comparing gender to race forces others to focus on the genetic (nature) aspect of behavior as opposed to the learned (nurture) aspect.

I use this argument frequently with much success.

        • 5n4k33y3s

Maybe it’s persuasive, but there is nothing to be gained illuminating one truth while obfuscating another more important one.

Regardless of the cognition of blacks, discipline standards should not be changed to accommodate them. It has no bearing on the problem.

The feds are meddling where there is no racial discrepancy. On average, blacks are the worst scofflaws in every place they live in America, so it is not a statistical aberration at all.

It is an overbearing intrusion by the black-run federal government to intimidate the staff of an academic institution into imposing a double-standard for discipline on behalf of blacks.

          • Xanthippe2

Um, are you familiar with Oakland?  I do not think there is a single public school that could even approximately be called an “academic institution.”

As for race and gender:  I think the point is that Mother Nature made the races different just as she made the sexes different.  Of course, Whites can live quite well without non-Whites, but men and women need each other.  (Generally speaking, that is.  You are quite free to live with no contact with women as far as I am concerned!)

          • 5n4k33y3s

My point is, don’t make a comparison of whites to women and blacks to men. It’s also unfortunate when any race is compared to women or fags.

Conflating gender and race is the gimmick Feminism always uses. I have no use for that gimmick. I hate it every time I see it.

Blacks were once the victims of whites, but women were never the victims of men. Feminism is intolerable.

Feminism is the primary vehicle through which white men are brought down on behalf of aggrieved blacks. I detest any kinds of ideology or rhetoric which resemble Feminism.

Um, I have a question. Who is running these schools? Seems logical to me that most of the teachers and other staff would be black, no? Are there any White people left in Oakland? So, who is expelling these poor misunderstood black males? Other blacks? Hmmm…

    •  That never stops the Gibmuhdat, Dats Racciss types.

Black victimizes black, it sure as heck isn’t blacks that will pay because they don’t have anything. It is the white tax payer.  Who is financially supporting Oakland schools? The 60% of Alameda County that are white or Asian, and they’re the ones who will get the bill when Tyrone wrongly expels Sh’oniqua.

  • Defiant White

Blacks make up 12% of the population and account for 50% of the murders and 50% of the jail population.

But hey, let’s spend money monitoring the Oakland’s school negro discipline problem because, for some reason, that seems “unusual” to us.

You can’t make this stuff up.

  • APaige

Based on the numbers it seems that the Oakland School District was trying to decrease the % of black suspension/explusion. They represent 39% of the population-one would expect that they would represent at least 75% of the suspension/explusion cohort. And oh yes the pattern is”found across the country”-that is genetic/cultural.

Oakland, a city for the most part run by Blacks, seems to always need some kind of government intervention in order to run things properly (e.g., their police department, and now their school district). This, of course, underscores once again that Blacks are not qualified to run efficiently a city or anything that involves detailed organization and planning. And this is not an overstatment or hyperbole – it’s reality in every American city run by Blacks!

Oh, and I can just imagine that all the disciplinary problems within Oakland schools are going to be resolved now that federal government has stepped in because, after all, the government is so wise, so efficient and so impartial when it comes to addressing ‘minority issues’!?

  • That disparity and the practices that led to them are found across the country, Ali said. “They are not unique to Oakland,” she said.

Be it a neighborhood in the US or a nation in Africa, black dysfunction is universal.

Of course the feds won’t have to actually deal with these troublesome tykes and teens. They’ll only make it impossible for teachers to teach and students to learn.

Thank goodness!  The idea that D’Anfernee Washington would get a punishment more severe for feeling up Kathleen Baumbgartner and then spitting on his teacher and calling her names one rarely hears even in R-rated movies before kicking and scratching her,  than Carol Nguyen would get for dropping her lunch money and Melissa O’Flynn would get for giggling a bit at it, or Jesus Romero and William DeVries would get for drawing pistols on paper, cutting them out, and then pointing them at each other, is an absolute abomination.

This lopsided horror in school punishments can not be tolerated!

Bring back mandatory capital executions for smiling and other childishness in our schools, just to make the races equal in the rate at which they receive discipline!  If learning was made enjoyable in a firm, safe environment anyone… er… ALMOST anyone could do it, and we can’t have that.

Our public schools need to be more like public transportation and public restrooms: Filthy, unsafe, staffed exclusively by the the incompetent and morally lazy, and full of criminals.  Only then will everyone be equal.
