In Heated ‘07 Speech, Obama Lavishes Praise on Wright, Says Feds ‘Don’t Care’ About New Orleans

Tucker Carlson and Vince Coglianese, Daily Caller, October 2, 2012

In a video obtained exclusively by The Daily Caller, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama tells an audience of black ministers, including the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, that the U.S. government shortchanged Hurricane Katrina victims because of racism.

“The people down in New Orleans they don’t care about as much!” Obama shouts in the video, which was shot in June of 2007 at Hampton University in Virginia. By contrast, survivors of Sept. 11 and Hurricane Andrew received generous amounts of aid, Obama explains. The reason? Unlike residents of majority-black New Orleans, the federal government considers those victims “part of the American family.”

The racially charged and at times angry speech undermines Obama’s carefully-crafted image as a leader eager to build bridges between ethnic groups. For nearly 40 minutes, using an accent he almost never adopts in public, Obama describes a racist, zero-sum society, in which the white majority profits by exploiting black America. The mostly black audience shouts in agreement. The effect is closer to an Al Sharpton rally than a conventional campaign event.

Obama gave the speech in the middle of a hotly-contested presidential primary season, but his remarks escaped scrutiny. Reporters in the room seem to have missed or ignored his most controversial statements. The liberal blogger Andrew Sullivan linked to what he described as a “transcript” of the speech, which turned out not to be a transcript at all, but instead the prepared remarks provided by the campaign. In fact, Obama, who was not using a teleprompter, deviated from his script repeatedly and at length, ad libbing lines that he does not appear to have used before any other audience during his presidential run. A local newspaper posted a series of video clips of the speech, but left out key portions. No complete video of the Hampton speech was widely released.

{snip}

By the time Obama appeared at Hampton, Jeremiah Wright had become a political problem. Wright told The New York Times earlier that year that he would no longer be speaking on the campaign’s behalf because his rhetoric was considered too militant. And yet later in the Hampton speech Obama explicitly defends Wright from unnamed critics, a group he describes as “they”: “They had stories about Trinity United Church of Christ, because we talked about black people in church: ‘Oh, that might be a separatist church,’” Obama said mockingly.

The spine of Obama’s speech is a parable about a pregnant woman shot in the stomach during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The baby is born with a bullet in her arm, which doctors successfully remove. That bullet, Obama explains, is a metaphor for the problems facing black America, namely racism. (At a similar speech he gave in April of 2007 at the First AME Church in Los Angeles to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the riots, according to a church member who was there, Obama described the slug as, “the bullet of slavery and Jim Crow.”)

At least 53 people were killed during the chaos in Los Angeles, many of them targeted by mobs because of their skin color. But Obama does not describe the riots as an expression of racism, but rather as the result of it. The burning and shooting and looting, he explains, amounted to “Los Angeles expressing a lingering, ongoing, pervasive legacy, a tragic legacy out of the tragic history of this country, a history this country has never fully come to terms with.”

And with that, Obama pivots to his central point: The Los Angeles riots and Hurricane Katrina have racism in common. “The federal response after Katrina was similar to the response we saw after the riots in LA,” he thunders from the podium. “People in Washington, they wake up, they’re surprised: ‘There’s poverty in our midst! Folks are frustrated! Black people angry!’ Then there’s gonna be some panels, and hearings, and there are commissions and there are reports, and then there’s some aid money, although we don’t always know where it’s going—it can’t seem to get to the people who need it—and nothin’ really changes, except the news coverage quiets down and Anderson Cooper is on to something else.”

{snip}

{snip} By January of 2007, six months before Obama’s Hampton speech, the federal government had sent at least $110 billion to areas damaged by Katrina. Compare this to the mere $20 billion that the Bush administration pledged to New York City after Sept. 11.

Moreover, the federal government did at times waive the Stafford Act during its reconstruction efforts. On May 25, 2007, just weeks before the speech, the Bush administration sent an additional $6.9 billion to Katrina-affected areas with no strings attached.

As a sitting United States Senator, Obama must have been aware of this. And yet he spent 36 minutes at the pulpit telling a mostly black audience that the U.S. government doesn’t like them because they’re black.

As the speech continues, Obama makes repeated and all-but-explicit appeals to racial solidarity, referring to “our” people and “our neighborhoods,” as distinct from the white majority. {snip}

This theme—that black Americans suffer while others profit—is a national problem, Obama continues: “We need additional federal public transportation dollars flowing to the highest need communities. We don’t need to build more highways out in the suburbs,” where, the implication is, the rich white people live. Instead, Obama says, federal money should flow to “our neighborhoods”: “We should be investing in minority-owned businesses, in our neighborhoods, so people don’t have to travel from miles away.”

{snip}

In the prepared version distributed to reporters, Obama’s speech ends this way:

“America is going to survive. We won’t forget where we came from. We won’t forget what happened 19 months ago, 15 years ago, thousands of years ago.”

That’s not what he actually said. Before the audience at Hampton, Obama ends his speech this way:

“America will survive. Just like black folks will survive. We won’t forget where we came from. We won’t forget what happened 19 months ago, or 15 years ago, or 300 years ago.”

  • Newsflash:  Barack Obama is a black liberal.

    Really, this didn’t shock me.  This is hardly catching Obama in bed with a little girl.
    Worth talking about?  Yes.  Will it much move the needle?  No.

    I find it interesting that he moans about suburban freeways, yet peddled a stimulus/recovery act full of them, or it was said to be full of them.

    Also, this bit about teaching poor people life skills is reminiscent of what I was always taught growing up, converted into my Axiom #60, that poor people have poor ways, or rather, poor people are generally poor because of their poor ways.

  • It was amusing today to see how the mainstream media, such as NBC News, are scrambling frantically to explain away the video. “Old news; nothing new to see here, folks; let’s move along, now!” Of course the Daily Caller and Fox News both said explicitly that the video was first made public shortly after it was taped; but they also pointed out that the most damaging (to Obama) parts of his talk had been ignored until now. When you see one side panicking at something the other side has just made public, you know you hit a nerve.

      The Journolistas are having a hard time explaining why they kept this tape hidden in 2008 while only releasing the transcript of the speech as written, not as spoken. Obongo gets in trouble when he goes off prompter, as he did in this case.

        Speaching in black vernacular (ebonics) to woop the Bantus into a frenzy.

    The real 47%, which is constituted a bit differently than Romney’s 47% (it excludes SS pensioners but should include those employed by the gov’t apparatus to service the parasitically inclined i.e. liberals) will yawn.  This blame-whitey garbage is exactly what they want.  It might even motivate those on the left.

  • Sarge

    To whom is this video supposed to matter? Barack Hussein Obama’s racial views were obvious before this sick nation installed him into the White House.

  • jedsrael

    This video will swing the independent White vote his way.

    Nothing says “We are fighting against racism” more than voting for the Harvard educated mulatto who “speaks black” when he’s surrounded the Affirmative Action elite.

      I wonder if he dances reflexively when he hears James Brown music.

    The article does say the Stafford Act was waived for New Orleans BEFORE NoBama gave his rant – which makes him a LIAR.

    What the article doesn’t say is that NoBama was one of (I believe) 10 Senators to vote AGAINST waiving the Stafford Act for New Orleans. The reason hurriedly spewed out by the Dems today was that it was because it was tied to some funding bill for Iraq.

    The real reason (IMO), is that he didn’t WANT money to be given to New Orleans, just so he could give the very (anti-white) speech he gave on that YouTube video.

    This guy would kill his own family to get reelected. He is a maniacal dictator. Anyone who votes FOR him is mentally deranged and has a death wish. If you don’t like the other guy, and you can’t bring yourself to swallow hard, hold your nose and vote for him – fine. But do the rest of us a favor – just stay home and don’t vote at all.

    I want to make one tiny step away from total dictatorship.

      My Facebook news feed is clogged with brain-dead morons spouting off that Obama won the debate last night. They call Romney a bully and make up the most ridiculous excuses for Obama (the high altitude and it was his Anniversary). The Cool Aid is exceptionally strong this morning.

  • Defiant White

    Last week, reports re-surfaced that he’s a homo.  Now they call him a liar and a racist.    What’s next, that he secretly likes muslims and supports muslim anti-American causes with our tax dollars?

    Any time you think some news report just HAS to sink this guy . . .

    Remember this:

  • And stupid whites still vote for him ….smh

  • libertarian1234

    This guy has shown himself to be about the same as Jeremiah Wright.  He even sounded like Wright at times.

    Although that rant supposedly was shown…in part…a few years ago, I never saw it and I’m pretty sure millions of others didn’t as well, because the MSM was busy putting a lid on news of that type and dressing up what he said in their reports, which is their usual standard operating procedure when they see a need to help their agenda along a bit, as they did when they altered the tapes and videos of Zimmerman to give a completely fabricated news report on several occassions.

    This man is a pro-black, anti-white racist that is an instigator and race-baiter just as bad as all the rest.  Throughout the video he constantly lied, which racheted up the anti-white fervor in the audience by assuring them they weren’t at fault for their short-comings.   It was whitey who is to blame.

    It’s no wonder whites are mobbed, beaten and killed in such great numbers by these prmitives.

    Claiming that money was going to roads instead of black communities was obviously an attempt to instill hatred and anger.  He knows that every community in the country is advanced or degraded on a local level, so if blacks tear down their communities instead of working to make them better as whites do constantly, it isn’t up to the government to step in and give them money.

    This idea of his….. and his black co-horts…… that a shift in wealth to blacks is somehow going to raise them up to a better level is absolute nonsense.  The only thing that will create better people and better neighborhoods are the people themselves.

    If all these Jesse’s and Als and Obamas and Holders finally robbed the US treasury and gave all blacks a million dollars each, they would live  an upscale life for a while,  but eventually they would be right back in the same rut with the same deteriorating environment, failing in school at the same rate, killing, raping, beating and robbing…..which probably wouldn’t subside much no matter how much money they had.  Evidence of that are the black millionaires in sports who live lives of constant chaos of one type or another.

    Thinking that the black problem can be solved with money or by changing white attitudes is pure ignorant fantasy.

    This guy is dangerous and might resort to any extreme to get his way.

    •  (1) there’s nothing wrong with being pro-black, as long as you don’t lie all the time.  If we are ever to resolve our racial issues, we will need input from honest pro-blacks.
      (2) racist is a nonsense word thrown at whites to shut us up
      (3) they say that they are anti-racist.  What they are is anti-white.  Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.

      otherwise, good post

  • Barrack Osama

    If Jeremiah Wright’s US of KKK didn’t stir anything up, this has no chance.

  • Athling

    The ebonics accent Obama used in the video seems to have vanished for the Presidential Debate tonight. There is also no hint of “the man” oppressing the “brothers” in his conversation. Imagine that.

  • Tim_in_Indiana

    In reading Steve Sailer’s biography of Obama, it became pretty clear to me that Obama will say and do anything needed to get elected and to stay elected. His whole life story is about grooming himself for political office and pandering to just those groups that need pandering.

    For example, in tonights debates, he brought up his grandmother, the same one he threw under the bus during the original campaign for acting like a “typical white person” as an example of a hardworking senior citizen who depends on Social Security and Medicare.

     For nearly 40 minutes, using an accent he almost never adopts in public, Obama describes a racist, zero-sum society

    A case in point: how many white candidates change accents as if changing a suit of clothes? This is just another one of the masks Obama wears, of which he has many.

    • Hillary adopted a hilarious accent to try to reach out to blacks at one point in the campaign, and there are rumors that GWB was taught how to speak like a Texan.  Also there’s the mayor of some town or other who took discreet Spanish lessons…

      anyway, the video is a disgusting anti-white rant in an affected accent that makes a mockery of pretty much every other speech he’s ever given.

  • John Bonham

    It’s amazing how they can bury stuff like this… Funny to watch him speak in a negro dialect, course only when he needs it ..
    This tape right here should have been a nail in the coffin in the  2008 election, but his handlers                ( Liberal press) were able to hide this and ALL of the videos that would have had people voting for a rock  instead ..

  • This guy is more versatile than Jim Carrey when it comes to doing impressions. For a minute there I thought I was listening to Al Sharpton or Jeremiah Wright. Like all good showman…oops ..politicians… he sure knows how to “work the room”. It would have been more honest and entertaining if he would have done an impression of Cuba Gooding Jr. and just simply pleaded to Washington on behalf of New Orleans:  “Show me  the money.”

    Same old tired story line about Bush/Washington not pampering New Orleans or caring about black people when in reality it was the “chocolate” Mayor Ray Nagin and the white liberal Governor Blanco who failed miserably as first responders. Funny, I didn’t hear Bush or FEMA blaming Nagin and Blanco for the mess they inherited.

  • Up to my neck in CA

    Sarge, no tingle over here. Eyes Wide open! I don’t see it coming unless the media and his brain-dead followers manufacture a win from false praise and reporting. Obummer is NOTHING without his teleprompter.
