CRS Report: Number of Able-Bodied Adults on Food Stamps Doubled After Obama Suspended Work Requirement

Philip Klein, Washington Examiner, September 19, 2012

Obama administration officials have insisted that their decision to grant states waivers to redefine work requirements for welfare recipients would not “gut” the landmark 1996 welfare reform law. But a new report from the Congressional Research Service obtained by the Washington Examiner suggests that the administration’s suspension of a separate welfare work requirement has already helped explode the number of able-bodied Americans on food stamps.

In addition to the broader work requirement that has become a contentious issue in the presidential race, the 1996 welfare reform law included a separate rule encouraging able-bodied adults without dependents to work by limiting the amount of time they could receive food stamps. President Obama suspended that rule when he signed his economic stimulus legislation into law, and the number of these adults on food stamps doubled, from 1.9 million in 2008 to 3.9 million in 2010, according to the CRS report, issued in the form of a memo to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

“This report once again confirms that President Obama has severely gutted the welfare work requirements that Americans have overwhelmingly supported since President Clinton signed them into law,” Cantor said in an emailed statement. “It’s time to reinstate these common-sense measures, and focus on creating job growth for those in need.”

So that’s what that was all about.  Signing as many people as possible as quickly as possible up for food stamps to create more dependency and therefore more Obama voters.

    • Silly republicans keep on thinking high unemployment is working for them …

“Because I never thought this day would ever happen. I won’t have to worry about putting gas in my car. I won’t have to worry about paying my mortgage. You know. If I help [Obama], he’s gonna help me.”

Yet when Neuter Gingrich called Obama “the Food Stamp President” a few months back he was lambasted by Juan Williams and other media buffoons.

  • There are many people, a lot of them are white that depend on food stamps because they have lost their once good paying jobs and are now working at low paying jobs to survive need assistance to feed their families. There was one family that I saw on tv that the father had lost a six figure paying job and was now working in a convienience store and they family depended upon food stamps to eat. When the food stamps ran out, they depended on the local food bank for assistance.

and if we didn’t bring in all the immigrants he’d still have a job.

      • He lost his job because of a company merger and his position was eliminted. He had used up all of his unemployment allotment and the only job he could find was the one at the convenience store.

    • For the record, “negress,” the feminine form of “negro,” is considered to be almost a pejorative, even though “negro” itself is not yet a slur for the most part. We’re not supposed to use “negro” here as a matter of habit – Saying “United Negro College Fund” is okay, because it’s the name of the group. But just saying “negro” in the general sense for black is something we’re supposed to avoid. The reason I didn’t delete this post or edit out all the mentions of “negress” is that this is a good post, but I don’t want to have to spend the time to edit out every mention of “negress” here to replace it with “black woman.” Just keep that in mind for the future, everyone.

      • Negro means black in Spanish. Negra is the feminine form of the word.

We speak English here and the moderator is correct.

          • I don’t think it’s a matter of correct in terms of opinion, even though it does seem to be yours.  I’m just stating AR policy, set by someone you’ve probably heard of.  Also, “Negro” is a valid English word, just not one that should be used in a general sense of speaking on AR.

          • IstvanIN

It isn’t a matter of opinion, in American English “negro” was used to refer to a person whose racial origins were those of the indigenous peoples of sub-Saharan Africa.  Just fact.

You make a point. Blacks of recent decades have been taught to go berserk when hearing any variation of a N-word (all of which derive from latin and closely related variations exist from russian to finnish) like a bull seeing a red cloth. The blacks themselves do not know why calling a spade a spade is so terrible but liberals have sure conditioned them well.

    From the Weekly Standard:

April-June 2012 (the most recent three month block for which government data is available), only 200,000 jobs have been created while 265,000 individuals have been added to the food stamp rolls. Additionally, in that time period, 246,000 workers were awarded disability.

All of these programs.. have the function of subsidizing the reproduction of those who cannot afford to raise their own children. Thus, they have 3.5 children, while we have 1.4. Got a problem with that?

Oh, so true!!    They outbreed you, have more time on their hands than you do to protest and play “victim” — AND, their vote trumps yours.

    • My question is what happen to the work requirement that welfare receipients are supposed to do for their benefits? I thought that was added to the welfare reform act?

      • Sweet63

Uh, suspended by President Food Stamp.  That was the premise of the story.

  • Sheila Dinehart

dang i am going to quit work and sign up for food stamps
