The defense attorney who wore a traditional Islamic outfit during the rowdy arraignment of the accused Sept. 11 terrorists is defending her courtroom appeal that other women in the room wear more “appropriate” clothing to the proceedings—out of respect for her client’s Muslim beliefs.

Cheryl Bormann, counsel for defendant Walid bin Attash, attended the arraignment Saturday dressed in a hijab, apparently because her client insisted on it. She further requested that the court order other women to follow that example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes “for fear of committing a sin under their faith.”

At a press conference Sunday at Guantanamo Bay, Bormann said she dresses in a hijab at “all times” when she meets with her client “out of respect” for his beliefs. Asked why she requested other women do the same, Bormann said, “When you’re on trial for your life, you need to be focused.”

Bormann, who is not Muslim, claimed the issue came up several years ago, when a paralegal wore “very short skirts” and it became a distraction for the defendants. She said that on Saturday, “somebody” was also dressed “in a way that was not in keeping with my client’s religious beliefs.”

The clothing request was just one of several unusual moments during Saturday’s lengthy and chaotic hearing.

The court hearing for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his four co-defendants should have taken a couple of hours at most. Instead it lasted almost 13 hours, including meal and prayer breaks, as the men appeared to make a concerted effort to stall Saturday’s hearing.

They knelt in prayer, ignored the judge, wouldn’t listen to Arabic translations over their head sets and one even insisted on having the more than 20 pages detailing the charges against them read aloud, rather than deferred for later in their case as the judge wanted, which added more than two hours to the proceedings.

Defense lawyer James Connell said Sunday that a tentative trial date of May 2013 is a “placeholder” until a true date can be set for the trial.

“They’re engaging in jihad in a courtroom,” said Debra Burlingame, whose brother, Charles, was the pilot of the plane that flew into the Pentagon. She watched the proceeding from Brooklyn.

Earlier Saturday, Mohammed cast off his earphones providing Arabic translations of the proceeding and refused to answer Army Col. James Pohl’s questions or acknowledge he understood them. All five men refused to participate in the hearing; two passed around a copy of The Economist magazine and leafed through the articles.

  • This is why we should have sent them to their just reward of 72 virgins while we were fighting them in Afghanistan, instead of bringing them to our side of the world.  The Club Gitmo Yard Birds have become causes célèbres for every left-wing kook in most of the first world.

If we would have plugged them there instead of dumping them on the tiny part of the island of Cuba that we still own, we would have never been able to shake the information out of them that led to us nabbing OBL.  But on the other hand, the Pakistani Deep State was holding OBL prisoner slash hiding him from the world, and his only means of communicating with the outside world were couriers on foot.  It was virtually impossible for him to organize terrorist attacks immersed in that “lifestyle.”

I think we lost by winning there.

  • Their beliefs? I believe they should be drawn & quartered. Let’s put it to a vote.

  • No

I laughed out loud when I heard this.  What total idiocy and lack of connectedness with the real world.

Respect?  The only thing these stone-aged fundamentalist barbarians “respect” is a strong alpha-male who is unafraid to slaughter for Allah.   The ladies in the courtroom could dress up as Bozo The Clown and it would have as much impact on their “respect” as a hijab.

You want them to show you respect?  Hang them.  You treat them as though they were unworthy to live (same as they do you).  You get what you can from them and when you’re done “interrogating” . . . you string them up.  Let the others see it.  In fact, let the world see it.

This type of treatment, although brutal by European standards, earns you “respect” among Arabs . . . and for all I know, all muslims.

These barbairans are making a complete mockery of our justice system, and we are bending over backward trying not to ‘offend’ them. They laugh all the way back to their cells, and think we are complete morons.

And really Cheryl, you can play dress up all you want, but how much respect do you think these men really give YOU? You are a female, therefore thought of as nothing more than property to most of them.

These wicked followers of their pedophile prophet are making a mockery of our military legal system, and we are allowing them to do so. There are enough useful idots and do-gooders in this courtroom (including the defense attorney and judge) to help them accomplish it too. Those who truly know how Muslim men behave in private know they are not so innocent or ‘holy’ as they pretend. When they travel to the West, for example, they are often seen in strip clubs and other ‘immoral’ establishments. They drink and cavort with all sorts of non-Muslim women. The men on trial are simply putting on an act, and they are merely playing with their naive, liberal defense attorney. I hope all the other women in the courtroom, as a form of protest, start wearing the sexiest attire possible!

    • The__Bobster

That was how the 9/11 hijackers were behaving on the night of 9/10.

    • but there is at least a logical reason for that.  When you are out of the Middle East, all Muslim holy lands, you are not desecrating the land with your sin.  And sex with non-Muslim women is not a sin either because they are not consecrated to Allah and are simply “devil-followers”.  It is similar to Jewish  precepts on usury and other uncleanness that are okay to be practiced in connection with Gentiles but not Jews.

She should wear a dress made out of bacon.

  • Please let there be liberal  femnazis on the juries.

I’ve looked at her photos, and she seems to be a pleasant looking blond.  Why, oh why, couldn’t she have been a fat, disgusting blob, so that we could have joked about the hijab being an improvement?  Sigh.

Religious beliefs are personal, they are not deserving of respect by others to the point others need to change their behavior in order to conform to these irrational superstitious beliefs.

  • American Patriot

As I see it an American Patriot has a Duty to offend moslem sensibilities at every opportunity on USA soil. The moslems are of course free to and encouraged to  leave.

I hope the other side fights back against this woman by coming to court in bermuda shorts and mini-skirts…if anyone remembers those fashions.

  • 20670

Thing is…the reason women have to wear such garments in the radical Islamic male mind world is that if some part of their body is revealed then the men are *tempted* and if they are tempted apparently they cannot control themselves, rape their women then the women are stoned to death because they commited the sin against Alah by wearing something/not wearing something that would prevent the men from being tempted in the first place.  I can think of so many American women, such as this lawyer, though she is not at the top of my list ( Bernadine Dorn is ),  who should be deported and dropped forever into the midst of any radical Islamic country.

    It could be arranged.

  • Ron Jeremy requesting women’s modesty?  Now that is a switch!

  • loyalwhitebriton

The defendants have also asked to be allowed to bugger some arab boys between hearings, out of respect for their beliefs.

Islam is NOT a religion, but a political system masquerading as such . . . That being said, the First Amendment to the Constitution DOES NOT APPLY to islam. . . ALL muslims should be required to register as “agents of a foreign government” with the US State Department.
The same should go for those principles and supporters of AIPAC, ADL, $PLC, ACLU and CAIR. . .

“she dresses in a hijab at “all times” when she meets with her client “out of respect” for his beliefs…”

Beliefs? Like Misogyny, rape, murder of 3000 innocents, beheadings, genital mutilation of women, polygamy, terrorism, IED’s,  assassination, sodomy, hate and perversion?

This is a “religion”? This is a politically perverse, sick, pusillanimous, deranged political movement masking itself as a “religion”.

I think that if Hitler had declared Nazism as a “religion”…we’d still have to deal with it today because we’re cowards…afraid to call this sick, demented “religion” what it really is.

Shoot them and feed them to the dogs, one at a time, so the others see.  End the farce.

For everyone going on and on about how she has betrayed her country, it is her job to represent her clients to the best of her ability. The fact that she is making these bizarre stunts is an indication that her clients are that crazy.
