Notting Hill Carnival: Police Hail ‘Peaceful’ Event

BBC News, August 30, 2011

The Notting Hill Carnival has been peaceful, police say, with 245 arrests in total during the two-day event.

Officers are investigating the stabbing of a 20-year-old man near the parade route in west London on Monday.

He is said to be in a serious condition in hospital. Five people–a boy aged 16, three 20-year-old men and a man aged 21–were held over the attack.

More than one million people were expected to attend the carnival, billed as Europe’s biggest street festival.

The festivities drew to a close 90 minutes earlier than last year, at 19:00 BST and there were more than 6,500 police officers on duty.

The annual two-day celebration of Caribbean culture sees parades of colourful costumes and floats run along a procession route from Ladbroke Grove to Westbourne Grove and Chepstow Road, along with about 40 sound systems.

One carnivalgoer told the BBC: “The police have been fantastic today, there’s people from all over the world here representing the carnival and we’re having a good time despite the London riots.”

Another said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, I love Carnival, bring on 2012.”

‘Outstanding support’

Kit Malthouse, deputy mayor of London with responsibility for policing, said carnivalgoers recognised what was at stake after the London riots.

“This year a lot of the floats were on earlier, there was obviously a much bigger policing presence, you can sense a change in the atmosphere from previous years, in that people are kind of on their best behaviour because they know the world is watching,” he said.

Tim Godwin, the Metropolitan (Met) Police’s acting commissioner, said carnival organisers, float drivers and band leaders had all come together and the “support for the police from the committee has been outstanding”.

London Ambulance Service said 241 people were treated at the event, with 27 taken to hospital.

There were two more arrests than last year, when 243 people were detained.

Those held at the weekend were suspected of a variety of offences including drugs possession, public order, theft, criminal damage, robbery and assault, the Met said.

Officers used automatic number plate recognition outside of the carnival area to target potential troublemakers and preventing them from getting to the event.

‘True spirit’

The stabbing happened at about 18:00 BST in Ladbroke Grove and officers said the man was found with possible stab wounds to the abdomen and hand.

At 19:30 BST an area outside a three-storey block of flats on Ladbroke Grove, close to the junction with Kensal Road, was cordoned off after a person suffered serious injuries.

A Met officer said it was believed an object was thrown from a flat window and hit the person on the pavement below.

Met Commander Steve Rodhouse said: “Through effective stop and search we believe we have deterred and prevented trouble from taking place.

“We will make sure that our officers are out stopping the right people.”

More than 70 tonnes of waste was cleared by 170 cleaners and 60 vehicles over three hours on Monday night, Westminster Council said.

I am completely confused by the very nature this event, especially after looking at the photos featured with the original article.

First of all, from the photos, it appears to be a Brazilian-style carnival event; there’s nothing European about it. I am further confused by why the event is called “carnival.” Carnival season is before the beginning of Lent (February or March). Since when is “carnival” celebrated during harvest time? My last question is when did this event become “Europe’s biggest street festival?” The Pearly Kings & Queens Society Costermongers Harvest Festival Parade used to be London’s big pre-fall event. I’m tired of European nations touting their multiculturalism. When I visit Europe, I want to see European culture, not African, Brazilian, Indonesian or any other culture.

Love that top photo of the older fellow tripping the troglodyte with the knife. Priceless!

    Such contradictions…..

….billed as Europe’s biggest street festival..

Actually there is nothing “European” about it at all. That photo pretty much says it all. A gang of thuggish looking blacks against a background of beautiful European buildings abd architecture. Note too all the litter lying around – a trademark characteristic of blacks. These blacks look so out of place. Black people in Britain are like a saddle on a cow. They just don’t belong.

….the Notting Hill carnival has been peaceful….

But then the article goes on to describe 245 arrests and a stabbing. It also mentions that 6,500 police officers were on duty. How is 245 arrests and a stabbing “peaceful”? And why would 6,500 police officers be required if the black people were “peaceful”?

    ….a celebration of Caribbean culture…..

Except that this is Britain, NOT the Caribbean. If the Caribbean is so wonderful why don’t they live here? The hypocrisy is staggering.

….more then 70 tons of waste were cleaned up…

NOW THAT sure sounds like blacks. As anyone who works for any city as a cleaner can tell you, blacks are the biggest litterers there are. Any black “celebration” or “festival” always ends up as a sea of trash and garbage. Blacks have no respect for the environment at all.

This article is something out of “1984”. Peaceful event with a stabbing, 245 arrests, early closing, and 6,500 police officers on duty.

Only the true believers attended this event so it doesn’t mirror the attitudes of the population at large though the BBC would like you to get that impression with their selective interviews.

Although 245 people were arrested and a stabbing victim is in the hospital listed in critical condition, the carnival was peaceful.

Did the authorities in Orwell’s 1984 use this much doublespeak?

Boy, Orwell’s words are more alive than in his original writings!

It took the equivalent of half an infantry division of cops to police a “carnival?”

And those pictures we see…cops just letting a knife -wielding brown thug run by, and one brave private citizen tripping the black idiot…

    Thanks alot, cops!

The glowing news headline, paired with a simple analysis of the content, and those photos, as the capper!

My, the world grows more surreal with each day. One has to wonder how long this can go on!

(Was that even England, or some black hellhole?)

    Oh yeah, same thing???

    “Peaceful” indeed. How magnificently Orwellian!

they should band these carnivals for wasting tens of millions of dollars of police resources (RASCIST). then a again they should be banned from entering europe. sometimes the simplist idea is the most effective.

Not only are the blacks messy, the Hispanics are as well. You should see the beaches after a weekend. Dirty diapers, fast food containers, junk food rappers etc. It is sad to see want goes into the ocean after the people of color leave. Then, the white volunteers come by on “clean up after the beach day”, and clean up after them.

No. 6 – It gets even better – the ‘one brave private citizen’ is a man from Chechnya. He was allowed to remain in the UK in 1996 as he fought the Russians. He admits to having witnessed at least 1,000 deaths. His chief concern now however is the picture shows him to be an active man and he is claiming disability benefits! I cannot blame the Police for the way they have to deal with this kind of situation. They are probably the only indigenous British in the picture. They are heavily handicapped by political correctness. If the recent riots had been by white people they would have been stopped immediately. If you wish to visit England, avoid London.

One lone white shopper trying to stop a knife wielding man of dusky hued pigment…looks like America to me.

6500 cops, that’s 6.5 infantry battalions, and normally their are only 5 battalions in a brigade. For a carnival? Welcome to diverisity as perverse as it might be.

Idiot politicans ruled by crooked bankers enjoy every minute of this. It dumbs us down and ruins country after country, weakens the Western World and makes us vulnerable for domination.

Maybe some of you race realists complaining about a Caribbean festival can answer this: if Europe is so nice and superior to every other place, what the heck were the Brits doing in the Caribbean in the first place? What were they doing in Africa? And if violence is so foreign to the nature of the European, why did their arrival presage the largest period sustained kidnapping and killing in human history?

Maybe instead YOU can explain to us why Africans and Caribbeans want to be in Europe? After all, that is the way the population is flowing.

Europe did not export much population to Africa or the Caribbean. Europeans were there only to grow the coffee, sugar, etc — all of which were not native, but which they imported, by the way.

And if violence is so foreign to the nature of the European, why did their arrival presage the largest period sustained kidnapping and killing in human history?

I don’t think anyone has said Europe has not been violent. Hardly! All human races have been violent, but (as with most things) Europeans were just better at it than anyone else. That’s why they had empires.
