Tancredo Backing off Presidential Candidacy

WorldNetDaily.com, Aug. 3

Despite previous statements saying he’d consider running for president if no one steps up to the plate on immigration, U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., told an audience last night he had no aspirations for the White House.

“I’m too short, I’m too fat, I’m too bald to be the president of the United States,” Tancredo said, according to the Post and Courier of Charleston, S.C.

Just last month, Tancredo told Iowa members of the Christian Coalition he would run for president in 2008 if no top-tier Republican candidate takes up his call for tougher enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws.

He made the same statement in March on “Farah Live,” the nationally broadcast radio show hosted by WND editor Joseph Farah.

“I’ll tell you what,” he said, “if no one else does it, I will do it.”

Despite his apparent backtrack on a presidential run, Tancredo told the audience of police officers in South Carolina that political correctness has made the serious problem of illegal immigration even worse.

“That is the thing that has prevented us from doing anything about this,” Tancredo said. “An illegal alien actually has a different system of justice here. If you’re here illegally, you can get a pass.”
