New Mandela Letters Show Waste, Corruption

A cache of newly-found letters, reports, and confidential journals from former South African president Nelson Mandela highlight the pandemic waste and corruption surrounding his ruling ANC-party.
The documents, dating between 1994 and 1997, were found abandoned in a Fort Hare University basement and are now part of South Africa’s National Heritage Cultural and Studies Centre.
The “theft and wasteful” expenditure shown in the archives even resulted in the party’s former secretary of finance “resigning over a lack of confidence in the leadership to tackle corruption.”
Some of it sheds light on investigations into people who have gone on to become prominent businessmen, {snip}.

The letters take up an entire room.
In 1994, Nathan Marcus, the party’s former secretary of finance, compiled a report that revealed a list of senior party members linked to fraud and theft investigations.

The archives are being authenticated and documented by a team headed by Professor Cornelius Thomas, who calls the find “extraordinary.”
