N.C. Counties to Further Enforce Immigration Policies
North Carolina, the first state in the nation to craft a formal partnership with federal immigration authorities, is moving ahead in its efforts to combat illegal immigration.
The state has focused its efforts on identifying undocumented immigrants who have been arrested for other crimes.
The 287(g) program, already active in Mecklenburg, Alamance, Gaston and Cabarrus counties, allows local law enforcement officials to take on some responsibilities of immigration officers.
Officers trained in the program use federal databases to check the identity and residency status of non-U.S. citizens who have been arrested.

Richard Rocha, spokesman for the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said other N.C. counties will participate in the Criminal Alien Program, in which federal immigration officials are stationed in local jails.
Some nearby counties have seen positive results from participation in 287(g).
Six months after Alamance County instituted its 287(g) program, officials reported that the number of people being processed through the county jail had decreased.

The rest of the story is even more interesting. Go to the orignal article and then to the link at the end. The complete original article came from The Daily Tarheel (UNC-CH student newspaper) and treats the reader to some breathtaking statements made by a pair of socialist multiculturalist politicos engaged in a Democratic Party primary (actually final election as no Republican could ever win this seat) debate for a NC State Senate seat. And there are lots of interesting posts there too.

Well, pin a medal on NC local authorities. I don’t know what the process is or the paperwork done for this to happen, but I’m glad someone is finally mad enough to take the iniative to do something about the problem.
Where would one even find an immigration officer? (in the NIS office not keeping up with necessary proper documentation)

WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MORE SERIOUS CRIMES ARE COMMITTED BEFORE WE ACT TO REMOVE ILLEGAL ALIENS FROM THIS COUNTRY?
Is it not the most expensive way in the world to apprehend illegal aliens… at local jails after they have victimized citizens in this country? Why do we have to wait until the invaders kill, assault, rob or rape an American before we can seriously consider deporting them?
Surely to God, this country can imagine doing something to PROTECT the American people rather than just waiting until they are victimized (and the attacker actually captured in local jail) before we take action to zip them out of the country.
