Loudoun County Leaders Approve Ban on Streets Named After Confederate Leaders, Segregationists

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors officially changed an ordinance to send a clear message: streets named after Confederate leaders and segregationists are prohibited.

In a regular meeting on Tuesday, supervisors unanimously voted to codify the changes, which also includes names of facilities and bridges.

Within the last four years, the county renamed about a dozen roadways including Harry Byrd Highway to Leesburg Pike and John Mosby Highway to Little River Turnpike. The school system also joined the effort by renaming two schools including Mercer Middle School to Gum Spring Middle School.

“Our board strongly believes that nobody should have to go to school or drive on a road or walk past a statue honoring somebody that would rather see them disenfranchised or that would have rather see them enslaved,” Supervisor Juli Briskman said.
