Mayor Adams Claims ‘Woke’ Democrats Are Driving Minority Voters Out of Party

Mayor Adams accused “woke” Democrats on Wednesday of driving minority voters out of their party — embracing a talking point typically pushed by Republicans.

“There’s a hemorrhaging of our Latino community, our AAPI communities, that’s leaving the traditional Democratic base, because we’ve allowed the loudest and those who consider themselves to be ‘woke,’” Adams said in an appearance on MSNBC.

“Some of us never went to sleep, and we hear and speak directly to people, and I think the party is now understanding that we have to speak at those issues that are important: Jobs, public safety, educating our children, good health care, just these common kitchen table issues.”

Adams delivered the broadside against some of his fellow Democrats while opining on President Biden’s Tuesday night State of the Union address before Congress.

The moderate mayor made the case that Biden did a good job in his speech of moving away from “woke” rhetoric in favor of focusing on meat-and-potatoes political issues.

But the mayor, who was a registered Republican between 1997 and 2001, did not elaborate on what he meant by “woke” or which specific Democrats he believes are to blame for advancing that message.

Adams spokesman Fabien Levy declined to expand on the mayor’s comments when asked for elaboration.

“The mayor’s comments stand and don’t need further explanation,” Levy said Wednesday afternoon.
