‘No Africans’ Chinese Restaurant Owner Arrested in Nairobi

Murithi Mutiga, Guardian, March 24, 2015

The owner of a Chinese restaurant in Nairobi that operated a “no Africans” policy has been arrested after media reports about the establishment triggered an outcry on social media.

Zhao Yang was charged with operating a restaurant without a valid licence only hours after the Daily Nation, Kenya’s biggest newspaper, published a front-page story about the restaurant.

Co-owner Esther Zhao told the newspaper that Africans posed a security risk and needed to be kept out after 5pm. “We don’t admit Africans that we don’t know because you never know who is al-Shabaab and who isn’t,” she said, referring to the Somali-based terror group blamed for a number of attacks in Kenya in recent years.

“It is not like it is written on somebody’s face that they are a thug armed with a gun.”

Staff were quoted saying the restaurant’s security detail were under strict instruction not to let in any Africans in the evening, although one or two “loyal customers” were allowed.

The story triggered outrage across the internet. Under the hashtag #noblacksallowed, Twitter users called for the restaurant to be shut down.

“I don’t understand how this article isn’t ironic. This can’t be real,” one reader, Aisha, said. Most commentators demanded the deportation of the restaurant owners.

“There is a proverb, loosely translated, which says ‘if you hate the cow, you should also shun leather’,” one said. “Let the Chinese go do this in China. This is Kenya, and if there is something they do not like, they are free to leave.”

Like most countries on the continent, there has been an extraordinary rise in Chinese economic engagement in Kenya over the past decade. Trade volumes have grown from $186.37m (£125m) in 2002 to $3.27bn in 2013, and the growing number of Chinese migrants has been accompanied by the mushrooming of numerous Chinese-operated restaurants and hotels.

Although many Kenyans have welcomed Beijing’s investment in major infrastructure projects including a new $5.2bn railway to replace the track built by the British more than a century ago, some Chinese have been blamed for a rise in poaching in the country’s national parks.

Zhao faces a prison term of 18 months or a fine of more than $1,000 if found guilty of operating the restaurant without a licence.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights called on any Kenyans who had been barred from the restaurant to get in touch because it planned to lodge a civil suit.

Silly Chinese. You don’t need a controversial sign banning blacks from your restaurant.

You can keep them away just by playing classical music over the speakers and by making tipping mandatory!

    • Weisheit77

They’re new at this. Give them time.

      • TrueNorthFree

        LOL

      • Ultimate187

Yep. Whites once used signs too. Then comes the natural progression towards more subtle means.

  • Co-owner Esther Zhao told the newspaper that Africans posed a security risk and needed to be kept out after 5pm.

Bring Ester Zhao here to St. Louis and give her control of the entire U-City/West End Loop.

“Co-owner Esther Zhao told the newspaper that Africans posed a security risk and needed to be kept out after 5pm”

This African administered nation must be doing SOMETHING right. In our own multiculturally diverse nation, most restauranteurs would argue that their African customers pose a security risk during all hours of the day and night.

    • model1911

Here most ‘yooufs’ are just getting out of bed at 5pm, fully rested for a night of mayhem.

  • Truthseeker

I think the Chinese would be best-advised to get out of Africa. If al-Shabaab is on the loose, go back to your own country and avoid the headache.

    • Zimriel

Well, excepting for areas under direct Chinese control…

Chao, not living in such an area, is nuts to maintain the policy she maintained.

    • evilsandmich

I spoke to a Chinese woman who owns a hotel in some African dump (to, ironically, house American ex pats doing work in said dump) and the whole thing has the air of the U.S.A. and Latin America in the late eighties/early ninties: more money than racial awareness. Prepare to say goodbye to your African Yuan silly Chinese people.

    • Jason Lewis

Maybe they’ll go full Tiananmen Square on Africa?

    • dukem1

Long-term, extended Chinese engagement with the Dark Continent would create a nightmarish foreign-policy scenario…
Short-term, ….how can they stand it!?!?!?

    • Charles Martel

No let the Chinese deal with them like they did striking black miners.

  • Zimriel

“Fear of Shabaab” is humbug. It’s more likely a fear of the locals running the ol’ dine-and-dash.

  • Jason Lewis

Nairobi needs more diversity. Send more Chinese.

    • phillyguy

don’t worry the Chinese have been there for the last 10 years taking every last drop of natural resources and minerals to stamp us out.

      • bv

        The Chinese are no fools.

    • Oldcorporal

If the U.S. had heavy investments in sub-Saharan Africa as the Chinese do, and needed manual laborers for a big dam project (or putting up electric lines, or constructing huge buildings) we would — of course — hire black Africans. The Chinese, having little trust in Africans or faith in their reliability, bring thousands of Han Chinese laborers from their homeland to do the work. Let’s just say the Africans don’t have even a nodding acquaintance with the Confucian ethic — especially the part about working hard.

      • Jason Lewis

The Chinese won’t be weak with guilt if they have to put down a Nairobi mob that challenges their interest.

        • evilsandmich

I have a hard believing that the Chinese have found a way around the “international empire/cultural rot at home” conundrum. If anything the Chinese are keen to insanely avoid the mistakes of the west by taking the worst ideas and then doubling down on stupid (Communism springs to mind, but there are many others).

      • Fathercoughlin

No,the environment in which they evolved did not demand hard work. Blacks are lazy, especially males. Deal with it. It aint gonna change, even with “job training”,lol.

  • Oldcorporal

Eminently sensible policy on the part of the Chinese owner. East Asians tend not to care much if they ruffle blacks’ tender feelings. Just before the start of the Beijing Olympics of a few years ago, police went out to all the taverns which were near the Olympic Village. Their message to the owners: You WILL NOT serve blacks or Mongols while the Olympics are in progress. If you do, expect heavy fines! Apparently their judgment was, Mongols are the blacks of the Far East. Or maybe, blacks are the Mongols of America.

    • The Dude

Lol, it’s always “the rowdy neighbor” + blacks, isn’t it? Very analogous to the “No Irish – No Blacks” in Britain.

  • B.A_2014

“I don’t understand how this article isn’t ironic. This can’t be real,” one reader, Aisha, said. Most commentators demanded the deportation of the restaurant owners.

But when a Brit or European demands the deportation of a criminal Islamic leech, that is racism.

  • David Ashton

    Nearly as bad as “England”.

    • We don’t call that loathsome place “England” anymore. I am delighted my ex-father moved there.

      • evilsandmich

“Ex-father”? Have you been holding out on a time machine on us? 😉

        • David Ashton

Sadly you never liked us anyway, Mick!

  • SentryattheGate

Whites aren’t even allowed to live in much of Africa; they are being killed in Zimbabwe, South Africa and elsewhere! Yet blacks being refused restaurant service is a big deal?

  • libertarian1234

“…..the growing number of Chinese migrants has been accompanied by the mushrooming of numerous Chinese-operated restaurants and hotels.”

Blacks everywhere, all over the world, are incapable of starting and maintaining businesses in their own areas. If immigrants to the US didn’t risk their lives to provide businesses in black neighborhoods blacks would have to travel long distances to shop for the smallest of items. The same is true in Africa.

These Chinese businessmen in Kenya are going to get a dose of reality when they do something the blacks don’t like, because their establishments will be looted and burned to the ground, just as is done here in this country.

Blacks are programmed before birth to destroy. They are NOT programmed to build or create.

    • evilsandmich

I long wondered how Africa maintains its block of IPv4 addresses, but it turns out to be managed by the one place on the African continent that is dominated by East Indians.

  • The Dude

While I understand why a “No Africans” sign in Africa may look bad on the face of it, her arguments are pretty convincing, especially if there have been terror attacks from that group in the area recently. And it’s a private joint after all.

    • Jedediah Morningside

All she needed to do to avoid this fuss was to put up a “No Guns Allowed on Premises” sign instead. All would have been fine, then.

  • sestamibi

One reason behind the growing Chinese presence in Africa is that it provides an outlet for the millions of surplus young males resulting from China’s one-child policy and cultural preferences for boys. The “bare branches” problem is the result of the murder and abortion of millions of baby girls, so China figures if it can unload the surplus men and get them out of the country it will be spared the unpleasant consequences of having millions of such men hanging around with no possibility of finding mates.

    • TrueNorthFree

All that excess testosterone must be channeled productively.

    • pcmustgo

Yeah, The Chinese have like 1 billion people they need to “unload”

    • Ultimate187

I don’t think that’s a real reason. You can’t send millions of guys anywhere. The logistics would be crazy. Also keep in mind that China isn’t a closed country. Many of them find mates in surrounding countries like North Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Even Russia’s far east is seeing more intermarriage with the Chinese.

      • InAFreeCountry

Mexico’s sent millions of guys here.

  • IstvanIN

There are three basics ways to exploit a new land:
    1) The early Spanish method: send men into the new territory without women and end up with a disloyal, mixed-race failed society.
    2) The late British method: live among the natives, attempt to civilize them and then watch them slaughter your people when they press for independence.
    3) The early British and American methods: push the natives out of the way and settle the new lands with families who populate the new lands with your own people. You end up with a population that (pre-1980) is either loyal to the crown (Canada, New Zealand, Australia) or is loyal to the flag (America) with the new territories wanting statehood.

If the Chinese attempt the first two they are doomed.

  • Hilis Hatki

“No Africans” policy, in the restaurant or on the menu?

    • Aleteia

      LOL

  • MathMan

I worked in Sierra Leone before the civil war broke out and all the hotels and restaurants in Freetown were owned and run by French or Lebanese. Didn’t seem to be any business acumen among the locals.

  • John Smith

I somewhat agree with the blacks, in that you’re in their country as a guest and should expect to accommodate them. I can only see Holder, Barry, Al and Jesse wishing they could send police around to enforce diversity here.

  • Johnny

“There is a proverb, loosely translated, which says ‘if you hate the cow, you should also shun leather’,” one said” Oh, would that blacks adhere to that policy here.

  • bv

For once I’m on the blacks side. It’s their country throw the Chinese out if the pull this crap in your country.

    • Charles Martel

In any war against between the civilized man and a savage support the civilized man.

      • bv

Which is civilized the African or the Chinese?

    • BlueSonicStreak

I’m inclined to agree. It’s basically a matter of principle here. I understand not wanting to be hit by African terrorists, but….you shouldn’t be in Africa, then.

  • asdf

Blacks hate it when non-blacks come into their country/neighborhood/etc, yet they seem hell-bent on not only forcing their way into our areas, but pushing us out and making us pay for them.

  • Dunnyveg

Nobody can escape from the clutches of liberalism anymore, anywhere.
