Mayor Eulogizes Officer as Cops Outside Turn Backs

Jonathan Lemire and Mike Balsamo, Yahoo! News, January 4, 2015

Thousands of police turned their backs Sunday as Mayor Bill de Blasio eulogized an officer shot dead with his partner, repeating a stinging display of scorn for the mayor despite entreaties to put anger aside.

The show of disrespect came outside the funeral home where Officer Wenjian Liu was remembered as an incarnation of the American dream: a man who had emigrated from China at age 12 and devoted himself to helping others in his adopted country. The gesture among officers watching the mayor’s speech on a screen added to tensions between the mayor and rank-and-file police even as he sought to quiet them.

Liu, 32, had served as a policeman for seven years and was married just two months when he was killed with his partner, Officer Rafael Ramos, on Dec. 20. Liu’s longtime aspiration to become a police officer deepened after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, his father, Wei Tang Liu, said through tears.

Dignitaries including FBI Director James Comey and members of Congress joined police officers from around the country in a throng of over 10,000 mourners.

After hundreds of officers turned their backs to a screen where de Blasio’s remarks played during Ramos’ funeral last week, Police Commissioner William Bratton sent a memo urging respect, declaring “a hero’s funeral is about grieving, not grievance.”

But some officers and police retirees said they still felt compelled to spurn the mayor. Police union leaders have said he contributed to an environment that allowed the officers’ slayings by supporting protests following the police killings of Eric Garner on Staten Island and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

“The mayor has no respect for us. Why should we have respect for him?” said retired New York Police Department Detective Camille Sanfilippo, who was among those who turned their backs Sunday. Retired NYPD Sgt. Laurie Carson called the action “our only way to show our displeasure with the mayor.”

Officers spun back around when Bratton took the podium to speak. {snip}

At Liu’s wake Saturday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the officers’ slayings a tragic story of “pure and random hatred.” Cuomo didn’t attend the funeral, which came as he prepared to bury his father, former Gov. Mario Cuomo.

The officers’ killer, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, committed suicide shortly after the brazen daytime ambush on a Brooklyn street. Investigators say Brinsley was an emotionally disturbed loner who had made references online to the killings this summer of unarmed black men at the hands of white police officers, vowing to put “wings on pigs” in retaliation.

  • The artist formerly known as Warren Wilhelm is going to be seeing a lot of backs of a lot of cops over the next few years.

  • MekongDelta69

    Once again – fantastic.

  • Luca

Now I hope these officers turn their backs on responding to calls in black neighborhoods. Let them police themselves.

    • Cid Campeador

You know. That may be a good idea. It might arouse the law abiding Black residents who have established a functional family unit with a married mother and father (I have faith that there MUST be SOME of them) to rise up and put an end to this madness.
Seeing Officer Liu’s widow was heartbreaking.

      • Reynardine

Because of lax South/Central American justice and inefficient police structures, it tends to be a hotbed of “death squads” that take justice into their own hands.

      • Alucard_the_last

25 years for any crime? America’s negroes should eye moving to Brazil rather than Africa which still hacks of the paws of criminal and where the death sentence means you die.

      • Luca

        Magnum Force

    • blisterpeanuts

There have been very few tickets and arrests these past two weeks. NYC says it’s “too soon” to say that it’s a work slowdown. But we can guess pretty clearly what’s happening.

    • Earl P. Holt III

The “Thin Blue Line” would never do such a thing: The violent criminal element would love it, while the few decent blacks would suffer the most…

      • Alucard_the_last

        Both of them.

        • World_War_Me

    • Alucard_the_last

They need to police themselves. After the few law abiding are forced inside at sundown, they’ll regret not having the “racist” police. The gangs will take over, stores will need to shut down early or risk getting robbed, street dealers can sell dope to anyone with a buck and whores can pull tricks without fear from the police. The down side is that they’ll be raped and/or killed along with the dealers and rival gangs. This is what the negroes want, then this is what they should get. Who are we to stand in the way of their dream state.

    • mike5586

Haven’t you heard? When we do police their neighborhoods it’s brutality and racist profiling. When we don’t police their neighborhoods it’s because white people are racist and don’t care about blacks.

      • Luca

So if they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t, then I say go for ‘don’t’. At least we derive a benefit from it and reduce the danger to the cops

  • phorning

I wish one of these families had the courage to tell all the politicians to stay away from the funeral. It certainly isn’t helpful or comforting to family and friends to have these services turned into political events.

    • Albert

I’m sure that slime knew it was in poor taste. But not to attend would have been an admission of guilt. He’ll attend the funeral to save face but he’ll have to be in very hot water to actually give the NYPD a formal apology for his incendiary comments and behavior. The irony is, an apology would be a start on the right path to regaining some modicum of respect from the police, but it would also inflame the already volatile rioters and harm his chance for re-election (Does this guy have a chance for re-election regardless of what he does now?)

    • See The Future

He shows total disrespect to the families of the victims to show up at a place where he is not welcome.

  • Tarczan

De Blasio did say that his black son had more to fear from the police than from criminals on the street. You can’t blame them for being angry, they risk their lives and he says that. He needs to retract that before he can hope to have their support and respect. He campaigned with an anti police message

    • Scott Rosen

I suppose he’s letting us know his halfrican son is a criminal.

    • Maybe not his own son, but his wife’s chief of staff’s son has had his fair of run-ins with cops, New York and otherwise.

      • Cid Campeador

Why does his wife need a “Chief of Staff”? Staff of WHAT?

        • Sick of it

          She’s a full-time diversity coordinator. That’s a big friggin deal!

    • blisterpeanuts

Some things, once said, can’t be retracted. He laid his cards on the table and now there’s no going back.

New Yorkers had an opportunity to elect a moderate, pro-business Republican who wanted to lower taxes on hotels etc. and encourage more economic growth in the city. They opted for a liberal, pro-union leftist who has proceeded to divide the city racially and scare more of the affluent residents into leaving. They get what they deserve.

    • Alucard_the_last

I live close enough to NYC to have to sit through their election ads and he used his afro-wearing son as a ploy to get negroes and their allies, votes. It worked. I guess living a moral, law abiding life is out of the picture. Break the law and the police get involved.

  • johningermany

What better way do the police have to show their utter contempt for this sickening pig of a mayor?

    • IstvanIN

The cops have been classy and to the point. No foul language or gestures.

      • nBmnp

Hmm, maybe they should have staged a “peaceful protest” (newspeak for looting, pillaging and burning) instead. They do that all the time and are always given what they want.

  • Bill has lost the support of the police.
His time to step down has arrived.

    • IstvanIN

Your statement, and you are not the only one, reminds me of government that has lost the support of the military and is overthrown. Have we come to that?

      • phillyguy

      • Kenner

        Si !

      • Cid Campeador

YES! We have it all across the board!

Not surprisingly, the usual search engines are making it more difficult to find these stories.

    • gemjunior

Serves him right. Not a good beginning to what looks like a lackluster career.

      • Alucard_the_last

His political career is over unless he wants a job at the DMV. His future opponent will bring up this fiasco. The most noble thing he can do is step down. He didn’t, BTW, attend the funerals. He was on the screen. I guess he was too busy to attend.

  • John Smith

    I hope this keeps up.

I can’t see this mayor lasting. Hopefully his buffoonery and ever collapsing credibility will get him run out of office.

    We’ll see.

  • Mayor di Blackio wasn’t even there; the cops were told to stand at attention for a video. He didn’t even have the stones to deliver his saccharine eulogy in person.

  • Albert

It amazes me how politicians can so convincingly say things that contradict what they said not long before. He practically gushed respect for the NYPD at both funerals. Mere days before he was quoted as telling his son to beware the racist police. I can’t say much about the man’s integrity, but his acting is damn near flawless.

    • AmericanCitizen

When someone like DoucheBlasio spends decades lying, it becomes second nature and over time the lies and truth all blend together in the brain creating the false worldview Liberals all share (Diversity is Strength, Money + government = black success).

      • Cid Campeador

(Diversity is Strength, Money + government = black success). AND PILES OF WHITE CORPSES!

    • It amazes me how politicians can so convincingly say things that contradict what they said not long before

      1. No conscience

      2. The owners of the megaphone won’t call them out.

    • See The Future

He has lied so much that he believes his own lies.

  • JohnEngelman

I hope other liberal politicians learn from this. Race is the liberal’s Achilles’ Heel.

    • Magician

The liberal politicians will come up with brilliant (or brilliantly lame) excuses to approve or support this

  • R L Buds

I was just looking at this story on MSN and the comments with the most “likes” are from people who seem to think like normal people. These “racists” are using their real names! I guess they post thru FB. There may still some be hope; a few silly libs were there throwing around insults, but of course no actual debate.

There is a seemingly Asian girl with a level head trying to dispute the normal Americans. They have a different culture (an actual culture not a cull-cha) so maybe they are offended, if so maybe they should go somewhere that makes sense to them.

It all seems like a big show to divert our attention. The cops can do what they want; I will still try to avoid them like I avoid the “others”.

    • Xerxes22

The MSM is trying to spin this as a PR problem between the police union and the mayor. That isn’t going down very well. Right now, they are probably frantically searching for a another gentle giant or St. Trayvon “victim” so they can go back to playing the anti-White race card.

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Bill Bratton insists that police officers should not have turned their backs en masse as the mayor spoke at a funeral on Saturday

I remember when this cretin was brought in to head the LAPD. He supported illegal aliens, Special Order 40 (prevents LAPD officers from questioning people about their immigration status) and refused to cooperate with feds on immigration law enforcement:

He told us Californians: “If you don’t like it, leave the state.”

On DeBlasio (or whatever name he goes by):

Elections have consequences. Only 24% of the electorate bothered to show up on election day giving communist DeBlasio a victory with 72% of the vote.

DeBlasio is a cop-hater whose entire 2013 campaign was anti-cop. He supported and defended the Al Sharpton-led protesters screaming about wanting cops dead and said he cautioned his bi-racial son with the brillo-pad hair about “not reaching for a cell phone near police officers.”

    Have things gotten better since?

    • Bon, From the Land of Babble

No way would I have allowed this attention whore at one of my loved one’s funerals.

      • He’s not a mayor, he’s a communist and an ‘enemy within.’

      • gemjunior

DiBlasio is from the same school as Bill Ayers, both are disgusting pieces of garbage. DiBlasio is hated by most conservate New Yorkers, who formerly made up the bulk of the NYPD and still make up the entire FD. One thing is for sure, he is an Islamist dirtbag, and the Chinese never asked to have Chinese New Year – I bet he just used the Chinese New Year so it wouldn’t look as if he was promoting Ramadan as a holiday all on it’s own like we wouldn’t know what a traitorous anti-white pro terrorist he is. The Chinese have their own little enclave in NYC and in Queens – they’ve always stayed pretty much to themselves and prior to picking up bad habits from the “minorities” they never asked for anything special other than to be left alone. If these two officers were white, this crappy mayor wouldn’t even come to their funeral.

      • ElComadreja

At least Obama didn’t have the guts to show up for a photo-op.

    • See The Future

      DeBlasio needs to be recalled.

      • toldev

Is that possible in the State of New York? If DeBlasio was the mayor of any city in the state I live in, the recall petition would be circulating already. As time goes on, I only expect him to become more unpopular. Even if he keeps his mouth shut. Besides his offensive statements, the fact of the matter is that he is just horrible at governing.

  • Whitetrashgang

New York city the western worlds biggest ghetto. To me 9-11 was the best thing on TV back in the old days.

    • Ringo Lennon

NYC reaped a lot of sympathy and free publicity from 9/11 at the expense of other cities till this veryday. Other cities have to compete for tourism dollars. Even NFL pre game and halftime shows are from NYC, except for Fox Sports.

    • See The Future

NYC will experience an event that will make 9-11 look like a Sunday school picnic.

      • Alucard_the_last

And we can thank our open borders for that. Just what kind of nation allows people to pour in by the millions with no check for diseases or weapons. A nuke will not be brought in but the pieces necessary will. It will then be built and put in cities around America. Thanks to Bush and Obama, there seems to be a establish movement to destroy this nation.

    • gemjunior

It’s not really. I grew up there and it was like anywhere else, believe it or not we played outside till the streetlights came on then went home. Nothing bad happened but there were no minorities where I lived. I no longer live IN NYC, I live “upstate” above Westchester, which is still almost all white. I got disgusted with the liberals, and the nonsense that I started to notice mostly in the ’80s – it might have happened before but I was too young to see it. When I could, I got disgusted with the overwhelming sympathy for blacks and minorities and saw the difference in how we were treated at our jobs. It’s so repulsive, and I had to get out. My husband is retired from the city, he was on the NYPD and mostly hated it. He was once on trial for calling a black guy the N word, and he was docked 2 weeks vacation on the word of a known criminal dirtbag. They believe the lawless scum before an upstanding cop fighting animals day and night to keep law and order. So he took the Fire test and transferred to the FD, and spent the rest of his career happily preferring to go into burning buildings than deal with the savages and worse, the police bosses. Sorry to sound like I’m doing them down when they are laid low but the cops isn’t a good job, you are wrong if you do and wrong if you don’t, never right. Unless you happen to die, then they can’t very well badmouth you can they?

    • Katherine McChesney

“… Officer Wenjian Liu was remembered as an incarnation of the American dream: a man who had emigrated from China at age 12 and devoted himself to helping others in his adopted country. ”

Unlike so many immigrants who only come for the “gibs me dats”.

    • Cid Campeador

Don’t forget our “home grown” “Gibs me dat” element” Once ah gits dat ah be comin’ to rapes n’ moidah yo dawtuh”.

  • MBlanc46

De Blasio wants to politicize policing. That’s what he’s getting.

  • Evette Coutier

They elected de Blasio. They deserve what they get. No sympathy for New Yorkers. The cops need to let the minorities run wild for a month. It’d serve them right.

  • Michael Robert Ryan

The primary function of the police is to punish white men for committing acts of vigilantism against negro thugs. They do this by throwing said white men into cages full of negro thugs where they can be murdered by said thugs, but only after they have suffered through the most horrific type of sexual degradation imaginable.

Any conservative who thinks the police are his friend is a fool. These filthy, vile pigs are not your friends. Never have been and never will be.

    • Chasmania

That’s a mighty big brush you’re using there, Tex.
So correct me if I am wrong, but what you are saying is that EVERY single LEO in the USA (and beyond) is an enemy to white men : No exceptions… Is this true ?

      • Michael Robert Ryan

If it walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck.

Every single one of these piggies is out there every day enforcing our nations egregiously anti-white laws (which are becoming more anti-white by the day, I might add.) Any of them who have any pro-white sentiments are culled from the force within the first couple of years of their career by their own consciences when they resign in disgust.

Pro-white types are strongly selected against in our nation’s police force.

Just like our military, our police forces are no longer institutionally conservative. These days, they’re all about Cultural Marxism.

        Your local police are ducks.

        • Not all of them. Many county sheriffs here in Colorado have announced they will refuse to enforce the high-capacity magazine law here, passed in a really big hurry after the 2012 Denver-area movie theater massacre. Those sheriffs aren’t the bad guys.

On Constitutional grounds, the law is shaky, anyway, as existing high-capacity magazines are still OK to own and sell here, but – get this – no more can be brought in to the state. What we have is therefore a state government attempting to regulate interstate commerce in items that are completely legal under federal law, and only the feds are allowed to do that.

        • Chasmania

Amazing how you know which way my local police lean. I’m betting you couldn’t guess my town with 50 guesses.

I do wonder if you will ever realize how silly you sound with your all encompassing statement ?

Does everyone reading here seriously think that EVERY LEO is some sort of cultural progressive storm trooper like old Mikey here does ?

  • Seimisi Robert Stone

This Mayor’s a cop hater. He’ll get shot by one of these protesters and still blame the law enforcement for it.

    • Cid Campeador

Can you imagine him walking down a street in BEDSTY at night? He wouldn’t make it. Most of them don’t even know who he is. They just voted DEM.
      He be just anovuh crackuh.

      • gemjunior

Yes, he would be bawling for security. Speaking of Bedstuy, which has some of the most beautiful architecture in the city, I dun had been in Harlem today cuz I had to bring mah muhfugghn brothuh to dat hospital dat be up dere. I found myself on Malcolm X Blvd., and said Oh My! I better get my white ass up outta dis place. But all joking aside, as I was driving east trying to find parking in a safe place, I passed all the most beautiful brownstones and what used to be mansions belonging to the very rich. There are churches there that look like cathedrals. I really don’t understand at all why blacks could have successful moved into these areas and taken them over. I just cannot understand how that was possible, sure some are burned out and ugly but just as many are still in beautiful shape (on the outside at least). Some of the insides of these places have still got beautiful oak fireplaces and mantlepieces, stained glass windows, and beautiful corners that look like castles. HOW did these people come to own this part of town – the most beautiful? How did that happen – seriously does anyone know?

  • Cid Campeador

Apparently HIZZONER tuned HIS back on the White Newyorkers.

  • The more I think about it, the more I think Warren Wilhelm’s motivation for saying and doing what he has in the last handful of weeks has far more to do with who he shares a bed with rather than Al Sharpton.

  • Sick of it

    “FBI Director James Comey”

What was he there for? They punish people who don’t tow the PC line, not criminals. What a joke of an organization. If I were one of those cops, I would be ashamed to be seen with him and wonder what he had up his sleeves to ruin me.
