These Five Charts Show the State of Discrimination towards Indigenous Australians

Eryk Bagshaw, Sydney Morning Herald, July 29, 2014

One in five young Australians would move if a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent sat next to them, a survey has found.

The statistic comes from a research paper commissioned by Beyond Blue into the levels of discrimination across Australia.

The study provides a snapshot of the awareness, attitudes, intentions and behaviours in relation to discrimination against indigenous Australians.

“The results were consistent with my experience,” said indigenous Australian actor, Greg Fryer.

The 47-year-old also said that while Australia has made progress since he was in his 20s, it still has a long way to go.

The study was based on the opinions of over 1000 participants aged between 25 and 44.

“This research shows that racism in Australia is still common and that many people engage in racist behaviour,” said the chairman of Beyond Blue, Jeff Kennett.

The former Victorian premier was concerned about the impact of racism upon the mental health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

“Racism, like any form of discrimination, leads to distress, which in turn can lead to depression and anxiety,” he said.

The study found Western Australia had the highest levels of discriminatory attitudes towards indigenous Australians.

Mr Fryer said that the higher than average results from Western Australia (WA) did not surprise him.

“A lot of indigenous artists have left WA because they just couldn’t cope,” he said.

Mr Fryer experienced this first hand when on a flight back from Perth, he was the only one not offered an alcoholic drink. He believes this was due to his heritage.

The study also revealed that 42 per cent of participants believed that Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders are given an unfair advantage by the government.

While 37 per cent believed they were lazy.

Mr Fryer said that he had been experienced being called lazy because of his heritage.

But because he comes across as articulate and well-educated, many people would not consider him as an indigenous Australian.

“‘Well you’re not a real blackfella’, they’d say.”

The data also suggests that other Australians are suspicious of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in shops and stores, with 21 per cent saying that they would keep and eye on an indigenous person while they were shopping.

Beyond Blue CEO, Georgie Harman said many people harbour an unconscious bias towards indigenous Australians.

“Unfortunately, many people don’t realise when they are discriminating against indigenous people and therefore, don’t understand the profound effect it has on how they feel about themselves,” she said.

This attitude was mirrored in the result for Australians attitudes towards changing discriminatory practices, with 28 per cent saying it wasn’t a priority.

On Tuesday, Beyond Blue launched the Invisible Discriminator campaign to show the psychological effect that subtle racism has on indigenous Australians.

Admittedly speaking with NO experience (except for reading), I’m gonna go ahead and guess that Down Under, ‘aborigine’ is equivalent to our black.

    • The Final Solution

They are a vile race, although American blacks are probably worse. Abbos are more like Native Americans – depressed and defeated. Alcoholism is a huge problem in their communities, so much that some outback towns have even banned the sale of mouthwash to keep these vine swingers off the bottle.

      • propagandaoftruth

They also have very low average IQ, possibly sub-sub-Saharan level, but I think their genetics are much more recessive than the Bantus.

        • See my own post here. It is very much more recessive.

          • propagandaoftruth

Yeah, that’s legit, and it’s really weird. Perhaps there’s some ancient proto-caucasoid genetic trick at work here that shuts off the atavistic thing quickly.

            Some Ethiops are like this.

          • Most North American blacks left Africa between 1700 and 1800, so virtually their entire evolution has been confined to the tropics. Aborigines arrived in New Guinea, the Solomon Island chain and Australia about 50,000 years ago. They have not acclimated to tropical climates the way African blacks have, because there has been much, much less time for them to do so. They really are a fourth race of people.

          • Einsatzgrenadier

Australian aborigines belong to the Australoid race. Members of the Australoid race can also be found in southeast Asia, New Guinea, Melanesia, the Andaman Islands, the Indian subcontinent, and some parts of the Middle East.

          • El_Baga_Doucha_Libtard

When are you going to write an article for AmRen?

          • I doubt they would want an article about building fly rods.

      • IstvanIN

Are they vile or are they so evolutionary backward that they are simply incapable of living in a modern society? Pure Abos appear so primitive that I believe that attempting to integrate them into White Australian society, or any some what advanced society, is doomed to failure.

        • propagandaoftruth

We down south had everything under control until about 1960 regarding the Negroes.

        • The Final Solution

They are both vile and backward.

    • As The Final Solution said, they are a lot more like Amerinds. My closest friend in Australia in 1997-1998 was 1/4 Aborigine. The rest of his ancestry was Scottish and Russian, and Dan had very fair skin, red hair, blue eyes and freckles. I would never have guessed, just looking at him, but he was at UNSW on a special scholarship. Now he’s a university professor in China, working on a second PhD. He was autistic and didn’t say anything until he was 11, when I was Down Under at the age of 30-32, he could read hexidecimal code like it was plain English.

We started talking because we both liked shooting.

His accent was the roughest, coarsest Australian accent I have ever heard. When he called here on the telephone in the early summer of 2000, my housemate (the thief and later child-molester, Mr. Rowe) answered, and told me “Someone is asking for you, but I can’t even tell what language he’s speaking.”

Dan married one of the local women in Harbin, China, or some place like that, and they have a son who has blond hair.

Gasoline/petrol sniffing is a common problem among Australian aborigines, and the only other people who I’ve ever heard of doing that is Amerinds.

Dan couldn’t take much liquor, so that part of his Scottish and Russian heritage appears to have been lost. I once walked him around Randwick after he was completely plastered, and he fell into deep water at the edge of a tidal wading pool at Coogee Beach. I had told him not to walk along the outer wall. I went in and got him out.

The purebloods are not very smart, their women are exceptionally ugly, but they’re nowhere near as violent as African blacks. In spite of the similar coloration, one would be hard-pressed to find two peoples so distantly related as African blacks and Australian Aborigines. I suspect this is a case of convergent evolution for life in the tropics.

      • The Final Solution

I don’t think there is an attractive aborigine female on planet earth! They are like the Ferengi on Star Trek.

      • IstvanIN

This picture shows something similar to your story:

        • Any honest man would consider the one in the middle a bit pretty.

          • Imagine, for a moment, what the full blood aboriginal mother must have looked like, and the pure desperation of the Irish Australian father must have been to mate with her. Likely an absolutely insurmountable language barrier, physical features more animal than human, and yet he still impregnated her, and, I imagine, despite the barriers, married her, and raised a family. (IE: took responsibility for his actions)

Despite the masculine, almost inhuman appearance of the halfblood mother on the right, the smile looks genuine, as do those of her daughter, and grandson..I hope she lived a happy life.

          • Alexandra1973

I pretty much agree, but the mother/grandmother looks not quite “with it.”

  • Pro_Whitey

There’s a guy who posts sometimes a picture of a rather uncomely aboriginal woman next to a hot blonde European woman, with the caption that racism is thinking that these are not the same species. That would be a good graphic for this story. The excerpt here does not indicate whether the aborigines are known for being dumber with greater proclivities for violence and other crime, but I’m guessing those are the realities undergirding the suspicion and desire for separation.

    • David Ashton

Mental tests indicate a much lower IQ level than whites. Their family structures have disintegrated partly because of white “colonization”, and government policy changes and confusion over the years; many have become alcohol dependent. A Martin might conclude that native cultures do not happily survive foreign immigration! As old Le Pen said to some US political critic, “I am Sitting Bull”.

      • IstvanIN

Brazil government has banned much contact with Amazonian Indians because it tempts them to leave the jungle. Once out of the jungle they simply can not cope and become alcoholics and drug addicts. Not every animal, or person, can be domesticated.

        • Emblematic

It’s ironic that the Left’s demand for ‘equality’ led to the ban on selling alcohol to Aborigines being lifted. Aborigines have no adaption to alcohol and it devastates them.
That law change has done more to destroy their lives than any other thing since the very early days of settlement.

          • Voltara Smith

The govt. banned the grog so they sniffed petrol. They changed the petrol so they inhaled paint. They restricted paint sales and now they huff deodorant. If there was no other intoxicant available they would use jenkem.

        • David Ashton

Instead of the falsehood of racial equality + western socialism, the proper policy for the general good is racial variety + intelligent co-existence, except when measures of active self-defense are needed.

    • Emblematic

Actually their nature is not that violent. Nothing like negroes. But imported Black American hip-hop culture combined with leftist resentment politics has made the young ones angry and dangerous.

    • Voltara Smith

Aboriginals are lazy and generally hopeless drunks but they are not naturally violent. They are nowhere near as dangerous as afro-blacks.

  • Alucard_the_last

    They are lazy….and ugly.

  • Reverse discrimination against Australians using this one weird trick:

Bring back the White Australia Policy.

  • Dave West

The other 63% probably have no first hand experience with the common aborigine!

  • The Final Solution

They are lazy as all hell and what evidence is there to the contrary? They existed on that continent for 50,000 years without producing a single achievement and have among the lowest recorded IQs on Earth. I had a professor at Sydney Uni, Dr. Michael Walsh, who is one of the world’s experts on Aborigine languages. I remember him telling stories in class about his experiences in Abbo communities. The stuff he talked about was so bizarre yet obviously indicative of extreme laziness, not “cultural relativism”. He said if you call an Abbo business anyone would answer the phone and it’s almost impossible to talk to a specific person – business is nearly impossible to conduct and they will leave the phone on speaker for 20 or 30 minutes and anyone who feels like it would come along and start talking. Pretty much retarded behavior. Also, some of their languages do not have any words to describe the passage of time, so they are very present-oriented with little to no concept of planning for the future or progressing in any sense of the word.

    • Dave West

Wow judging by the story of your professor these Aborigines have done the impossible, they have made American blacks seem like a god-send!

    • They’re running on what we call here “injun time”.

    • David Ashton

It’s that boomerang invention that still puzzles me.

      • They had a lot of time there before whites arrived, and they did some strange things.

        • David Ashton

The Tasmanians were even less evolved and largely exterminated by white “hunters”, and yet I read somewhere that a few survivors joined a chess club. Do you know anything about this?

          • The Tasmanian Aborigines are extinct as an intact people, but there are some who pass as white who have some of that bloodline. I knew a guy at UNSW Sydney who was partly Tasmanian Aborigine. His complexion was white, and he had blond hair, but some of his facial features didn’t match anything I had seen before.

He and I both loved car races, but his mania was Formula One, while I love the racing sports cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

          • David Ashton

Somehow I knew you’d have an interestinganswer. Come on, get that autobiography written.

          • Voltara Smith

That’s not true. The population of Tasmanian aboriginals was largely destroyed by their own propensity to trade or pass-on their women to whites. It’s a myth that they were hunted to extinction.

          • David Ashton

            Thank you for this correction.

      • Voltara Smith

They found returning boomerangs in egyptian tombs. The Aboriginal version is just a bent stick they threw at flocks of birds. I don’t believe Aboriginals developed returning boomerangs.

        • David Ashton

Thank you. The Boomerang Association of Australia provided a different account.

    • Voltara Smith

The resort on Fraser Island was bought by the government for around $200 million and handed over to a team of Aboriginals. It was a 5 star venue with 80%+ occupancy. After installing Aboriginal management and staff It closed within 14 months and is now a ruin. This story has been repeated thousands of times across the country.

  • dd121

Let me do as I please. I’ll take my chances with how I feel.

  • This story is riddled with the word “discrimination.” It needs to be said that the press is mususing that word. It’s not irrational or bigotry to speak the negative truths about others. I’ve no experience with abos, but have no doubt from reading the Australian papers that they create all kinds of problems due to their low IQs and primitive ways. There’s nothing wrong with the truth in that case.

    • IstvanIN

The real problem is contact. If the Abos had a huge reserve for themselves with no outside interference, they could live as they wish and the Australians could live as they wish. It is when you bring two incompatible species together that you have a problem.

      • Kenner

The Australian gov’t has set aside vast areas for Aboriginals, so much so that it’s created a backlash among whites.

      • Voltara Smith

But they don’t want to do that. They want a landcruiser and free smokes and beer

    • Alexandra1973

I am acquainted with someone in New Zealand that complains about the Maori. Says the Maori are like our blacks.

      • Lagerstrom

There’s a few Maoris at my work and they are really top blokes. Friendly, polite you name it.

      • Voltara Smith

Maoris are smart. They are of Asiatic heritage. They made the English come to the table and negotiated the treaty of Waitangi.

  • Adolf Verloc

As chance would have it, I have been rereading the part of John Baker’s superb 1974 book “Race” dealing with Australids. To put it bluntly, except for the Bushmen in Africa, they are the most primitive of all existing races of man.

  • kjh64

Full blooded aborigines have some of the lowest IQ’s in the world. They simply can NOT function in a White society or a society of just about any other race. They don’t have the ability It would be far better for them to have been separated from Whites where they have their own land that is their country, and they live according to their abilities.

    • Emblematic

Their old way of life is gone forever though. If left unsupported they would just die.

      • IstvanIN

I bet a few would survive, probably the best of them, and get on with their own culture.

  • Sue

It isn’t unconscious bias, it’s instinct. Something they’re trying to eradicate in the worst way. There’s no difference what color they are if they look or act like scum. There just happens to be more in other colors.

  • Emblematic

The funny thing is, even the people saying Aborigines aren’t lazy and don’t get hand-outs don’t really believe it.
They’re either just being polite or they’re being politically correct.
Everyone knows real (full-blood) Aborigines are unemployable. It’s not really their fault – they’re evolved to be suited to a different, pre-modern way of life.

As for not sitting next to them on a bus, if you’ve ever smelled an Aborigine you know why. And I’m not even saying that to be cruel. It’s just true. Even if they wash they can’t get rid of the smell.

  • gemjunior

I can’t imagine how desperate some white people must have been to have sexual contact with any of them. They are pretty beastly looking, and some of their “cultural” behaviors would make your head spin. Have a look at this from The Irish Savant, who some people hear have definitely heard of. He’s pretty funny and also tells it like it is.

    Rudd’s “Abology”

You know of course that the Oz PM Kevin (“Cave-in”) Rudd took some time off from arranging mass immigration of non-whites to make a heartfelt apology to his ‘Aboriginal fellow countrymen’.
In a speech to Parliament he almost wept saying “for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.” Mr Rudd said he apologised “especially” to the Stolen Generations of young Aboriginal children who were taken from their parents in a policy of assimilation which lasted from the 19th Century to the late 1960s.
According to the BBC “Mr Rudd received a standing ovation from MPs and onlookers in parliament, and cheers from the thousands of Australians watching outside.”

Now I’ve always been a bit confused by this because, as a dedicated cultural relativist, I always assumed that all cultures were equal. How then did the Stolen Generation suffer so much?

So I decided to spend some time researching the issue to determine just how much those kids suffered. After all, if the PM apologised in such profuse terms, they must have suffered a lot, right?

My main direct source was a book by Lloyd de Mause entitled The Origins of War in Child Abuse. This drew heavily on the work of leading anthropologists who studied the aboriginal culture and he quotes extensively from them.

I read early on that “the early infanticidal childrearing mode of Australian Aboriginals has been arguably the most abusive and neglectful of all tribal cultures”.

My goodness! Who could have imagined?

But surely it can’t be worse than what these innocents suffered under white adoption?

Well, I’ll let you be the judge.

According to the anthropologists who studied them (and who are highly complimentary to their, eh, culture) the Abos had some unusual proclivities. This from Roheim “the children who watched their mothers killing or eating babies suddenly avoided their parents, shrieked in their presence, or expressed unusual fear of them…recounting dreams about animal-man beings with the faces of parents smeared with blood. The fears and dreams get stored in their inner alters as time bombs to be exploded later in life.”

Gee! I can’t for the life of me imagine why.

Describing it as “a quite favourable picture”, Roheim tells us of “the custom of raping Aboriginal children, eating every second child and making the older children also eat them. Mothers regularly forced their children to eat their newborn siblings in the belief that the strength of the first child would be doubled by such a procedure. Sometimes the fetus would be pulled out by the head, roasted and eaten by the mother and the children and sometimes a big boy would be killed by the father by being beaten on the head and given to the mother to eat”

Ok, so the unfortunate victims being reared by their white kidnappers missed out on some tasty baby food. But still, couldn’t it have been somewhat upsetting for them to experience this, especially knowing that they themselves might be on tomorrow’s menu?

And not just tasty food. They also missed out on some kinky sex while in white captivity. Such as “the constant masturbation by mother of her children’s penis and vagina while she lies on top of them, twisting and pinching them as we saw was the practice in New Guinea.”

Apparently anthropologists report routine “incessant fondling of infants, masturbation by mothers kissing the boy’s penis, women passing baby boys back and forth over their heads, taking turns sucking the penis, lying on sons in the male position and freely masturbating them at night.”

But don’t worry – these experts assure us that these practices are fine. In fact they’re “nurturant”.

And it wasn’t just the boys who missed out. “The mutilation of young girls’ vaginas is also practiced by the Aboriginals, in which old men roll emu feathers with a loop of hair. This device is put into the vagina and then removed, pulling away a large part of the womb. The rest of the womb is then cut horizontally and vertically with a stone knife. When this wound is healed, the girl is then circumcised and made to have intercourse with many young men. The mix of blood and semen is collected and given to frail tribesmen as a fortifying elixir.”

Just in case you think there’s anything wrong with this (have you not heard of cultural relativism, where all cultures are equal?) we have renowned experts like the (in)famous Kinsey and Pomeroy, and indeed the even more (in)famous Margaret Meade to reassure us that “incest between adults and younger children can be satisfying and enriching.”

Well, if they said it, that’s good enough for me. And just in case we get the wrong idea, we’re admonished in closing that “the origins of the very violent personalities of Aboriginals are, of course, in no way caused by genetic differences, only developmental.”

But of course!! My goodness, how could we even consider such a possibility?

Anyway, do you still think old Cave-in’s apology was justified?

    See this also.

If this is not sick then I do not know what is. Just being around these people daily knowing about their “traditions” would cause me to be very prejudiced against them. I am completely prejudiced and racist toward them after reading the above.

In which Abo language did he make that “apology”?

I worry about the mental health of white Australians (and Americans and Canadians and Europeans). Living among Third Worlders can be very stressful.

    • LHathaway

There isn’t a word in this entire article discussing Indigenous Australian’s attitudes toward whites.

If the paper were forced to print such a negative thing, such as acknowledging even a murder of a white, this would all be blamed on whites.

      • MBlanc46

        Sounds just like home.

“37 percent of Australians think Aborigines are lazy.”

And the other 63% know they are.

  • Caucasoid88

Don’t Aborigines rape each other? Like, a lot?

  • “One in five young Australians would move if a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent sat next to them, a survey has found.”

I wonder if it occurred to them that, instead of racial bias, maybe these young Australians don’t like the assault on their sense of smell which would be the result of having what is essentially, literally, an unwashed savage sitting next to you. If I had a homeless person sit down next to me on a train, and he reeked of alcohol and bodily waste, I would move. There’s no reason to simply endure the stench because I don’t want to offend. Likewise, I imagine, with an “Abbo”.

Aboriginals are responsible for some violent crime but the great majority of it is against their fellows while drunk. The level of “domestic violence” if such a term can be applied to them is also appalling. Captain Cook recorded in his journals the violent treatment of aboriginal women by their menfolk.

From personal observation I believe Aboriginals are not in the same league as African blacks when it comes to violence and criminal behaviour.

Some overwhelmingly ignorant, racist, and scientifically inaccurate comments about genetics, ‘primitive’ people, IQs and the like in this thread… The comments from the Australians are especially disappointing, although not remotely surprising, and if anything, only serve to illustrate the point of the article above: that racism and ignorance are rife in Australia. Even after over 200 years of occupation many Australians can’t tell you the name of the local Aboriginal group whose lands they live on, or any of the stories of the ‘settlement’ of their local communities, or any of the racist, oppressive and genocidal theories, policies and practices that have been, and continue to be, inflicted upon Aboriginal people. They are also probably blissfully aware of the names of brilliant Aboriginal people like David Unaipon, who is on the Australian fifty dollar note.
