One Third of Britons ‘Admit Being Racially Prejudiced’

BBC News, May 28, 2014

Nearly a third of people in Britain admit being racially prejudiced, research has suggested.

The British Social Attitudes survey found the proportion had increased since the start of the century, returning to the level of 30 years ago.

Some 30% of the 2,000 people polled by social research company NatCen described themselves as either “very” or “a little” race prejudiced.

Penny Young, chief executive of NatCen, said the findings were “troubling”.

The survey also found wide variations currently across the country: 16% of people in inner London admitted to prejudice but the figure was 35% in the West Midlands.

Older men in manual jobs were the most likely to say they were prejudiced, but the group recording the biggest rise was educated male professionals.

Levels of racial prejudice increased with age, at 25% for 17 to 34-year-olds compared with 36% for over-55s.

Education had an impact with 19% of those with a degree and 38% of those with no qualifications reporting racial prejudice.

‘Socially liberal’

The social attitudes survey has been carried out every year since 1983–it recorded an all-time low of 25% of people describing themselves as racially prejudiced in 2001.

People were asked whether they would describe themselves as prejudiced “against people of other races”.

Ms Young told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme self-reported prejudice was “very difficult” to study in detail.

It appeared to be in “inexorable decline” in 2001 as part of “increasingly socially liberal Britain”–but has since gone back up.

The effect of the 9/11 attacks and an increase in concern about immigration were two possible reasons for the turnaround, she said.

But the BBC’s home editor Mark Easton said that the figures were not conclusive evidence of rising racism, when they were analysed over a wider timeframe.

‘National psyche’

On immigration, more than 90% of those who admitted some level of racial prejudice wanted to see a reduction in the number of people entering the UK.

But so did 73% of those who said they were not racially prejudiced.

Ms Young added: “Levels of racial prejudice declined steadily throughout the 90s, but have been on the rise again during the first decade of this century.”

Alison Park, co-director of the survey, said: “Racial prejudice, in whatever guise, is undoubtedly still part of the national psyche.”

But there were warnings about drawing conclusions from people’s verdict on their own prejudices.

Sunder Katwala, director of the identity and integration think tank British Future, said it was a “difficult measure to use”.

“People who said they were not at all prejudiced in 1983 often held quite tough views about race”, he said.

Today, younger people “hold themselves to a much higher bar”, he said.

“It’s quite a complicated way of doing it and not a good way to track things over time.”

Politics lecturer Dr Rob Ford, of the University of Manchester, added: “The problem is there is no definition of ‘prejudice’ offered in the question”.

[Editor’s Note: A detailed breakdown of this poll is available here. Of the people who admitted racial prejudice, 92 percent want decreased immigration. Of those who said they have no racial prejudice, 72 percent want decreased immigration.]

Aren’t one-third of those on the Island non-white? As we all know, people of color can’t be prejudiced, so this report is truly alarming. Next thing you know, all whites in the UK won’t be apologizing to people of color and holding them up above regular mundane and possibly racist whites. There’s good news for the forces of diversity, though, “younger people “hold themselves to a much higher bar””

    • me

Where’s the ‘racist’ survey on Muslims? Pakistanis? Somalis? I call B.S., because the ratio of ‘racists’ would be about 99% for these ‘minorities’.

  • Alucard_the_last

So am I. This really lowers your chances of being a crime victim. When a negroid who is foaming at the mouth (of mof in their words), I know that they are on the war path. Never trust these ‘people’ because they will take advantage when given the chance.

  • Publius Pompilius Quitus

If they were honest, all of the surveyed would admit to being prejudiced. It is right and natural to prefer others who are like yourself.

    • Whitetrashgang

What about the 20 percent of Whites who are always liberals? These defect people probably are not prejudiced.

      • Publius Pompilius Quitus

They are prejudiced against other white people but prejudiced nonetheless.

  • 30% “racially prejudiced” (i.e. they notice things).

28% of the UK MEP vote went to UKIP.

Nice timing on the part of this survey. How much you wanna bet they held this back until after election day looking to use it to “explain” the UKIP vote?

  • Bobbala

    Experienced is not prejudiced.

  • JackKrak

Encouraging, but the number should be around eighty percent or so. I reckon about a fifth of white are hopeless true believers in mutli-culti bliss and unicorns.

    What’s everyone else’s excuse?

    • propagandaoftruth

I wonder how many were honest. Speech is evidence of thoughtcrime in Orwell’s Britain these days and I’d have second thoughts about cooperating in this study. Honestly.

White kitman is a survival skill.

I like that old Roman guy, the original Brutus who pretended to be a tard (a lose but not inaccurate translation of his name) to escape the suspicions of his king…
Until “Tard” had the advantage and gave his tormenter a surprise he would not remember because he was dead at the hand of this illustrious “tard”.

How many Whites follow a similar strategy. Watching, waiting, drooling like idiots or spewing like eloi until..
The right moment arrives and a critical mass lurches in the right direction.

      • Sick of it

One should never applaud when a man murders his closest friends, for he is apt to kill others not quite so close to him and usually in a more vicious fashion.

        • propagandaoftruth

Speaking of vicious, how about those negrified Swedish communists? That was quite an eye opener.

  • JohnEngelman

I avoid the approach of young black men I do not know unless they are obviously dressed for work or church. Does that mean that I am prejudiced too?

    • ShermanTMcCoy

No, it means you are far too trusting.

    • PvtCharlieSlate

It means that you are discriminating.

  • HJ11

Racism and prejudice are survival mechanisms. Whites who aren’t around Blacks and other minorities often don’t understand and simply think their White cousins are ignorant. Then, when they’ve been around Blacks and other minorities they start to awaken to reality.

    • Einsatzgrenadier

Being racist and “Islamophobic” can save your life.

      • ShermanTMcCoy

As well as being quick on the draw.

    • freddy_hills

I think that’s one of the reasons those with higher levels of education are less likely to admit racism. First, many are smart enough to keep it to themselves. But more importantly, educated people make more money and are therefore better able to shelter themselves from the negative effects of all this vibrant diversity.

      • JP Rushton

Speaking out against racism is just another social cue to show people how high status you are.

“Oh I just love those darling blacks and Hispanics. But the nearest one is 100 miles to me. This lack of diversity is horrible, but what are you gonna do?”

    • kikz2

successful pattern recognition= discrimination = survival mechanism.

    • HJ11

i gleefully accept the notion that there is a so-called “racist gene.” And, I am most pleased to have it.

Now, scientifically speaking, it is perhaps more than a single gene.

It has been said by geneticists that the proof of a gene for one type of behavior is presented if we find a gene for the opposite type of behavior. And, in the case of the so-called racist gene, we know that those who are born with Williams Syndrome–have the so-called anti-racist gene (which is really the deletion of more than a dozen genes). Those with Williams Syndrome don’t really recognize racial or other differences.

  • Evette Coutier

Recognition that blacks are violence prone, less intelligent, and represent inferior genetics is not racism. It is a simple acceptance of fact.

    • ShermanTMcCoy

I’m a bit confused, I must admit. Is it that I hate blacks so much, or just their worship? My cognitive dissonance probably means I need re-education at a government internment camp.

  • Not enough info here.
How many nonwhites were surveyed? Prejudiced? Against what group? The word “prejudice” is loaded. A better survey would involve statements like:
    Agree, neutral, disagee:
Blacks are less intelligent that whites.
Blacks are more violent than whites.
Muslims are less intelligent than whites.
Much more interesting to see what percent of the population perceives the truth or is in denial. Also, anonymity must be absolute to get correct results.
In talking to whites, I find that most will say they’re not prejudiced or bigots, but their positions are not that different from mine. It’s the belief system of whites that’s going to drive future events.

  • frederickdixon

It seems to me a pointless survey partly because “racial prejudice” is not defined, partly because so many will not admit it in a face to face to face survey. To get a better idea of the real level of racial feeling it would be a good idea to follow the old rule – divide by three and multiply by four. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the difference between older people and younger ones is attributable in part to very much larger proportion of ethnic minorities among the young.

  • dusa1957

They are waking up too late. The mud people have already invaded the UK. I have to believe a large majority of white people will also wake up as they are forced to live in proximity to Negroes and mestizos, but again alas, the cat is already out of the bag.

  • dd121

I’m not in England but I’m 100% of that 30%.

  • MBlanc46

It’s not prejudice. Prejudice is pre-judging, making a judgment before the fact. Race realists, for that’s what we’re talking about, make their judgments based on experience with blacks and other “people of color”. How many people here on Amren have stated that they became race realists only after close contact with blacks.

    • kikz2

      Not just Blacks…..

      • MBlanc46

I’m sure. I have most experience, so that’s who I used for an example.

  • IstvanIN

The people who admitted to being prejudiced are just the one’s being both honest and not afraid of being arrested and charged with some sort of racial insensitivity hate crime.

  • WR_the_realist

    I am race postjudiced.

  • IKUredux

Oh, come on. Based on the laws in England, it would take a maximum amount of courage to express what you really felt. Right now, not one single solitary White person on the face of this Earth is willing to express to some pollster what they really think! I will tell you one thing though: I have started talking to my neighbors, and although opinions were initially guarded, I came out as a race realist, albeit, gradually. It took four years, but I can now report that all my neighbors are truly race realists; they had a hard time admitting it though. I live in a completely pro union, pro labor, blue county. But, you know what? The dems have completely strayed from backing the hard working White blue collar kinds of folk they once did. They have literally left the kind of people , that I personally consider to be the BACKBONE of this country in the lurch. I hate democrats. I also hate republicans. But, I have to admit, the dems are guilty of sacrificing their original WHITE constituents.

  • EiSkogsNisse

Racially prejudiced you say? What nonsense I say! Prejudice implies some kind of irrational fear or preconceived notion. I’m willing to bet that those Britons, like me, became “prejudiced” after having experienced the wonders of diversity first hand. In other words we are entirely postjudiced in our judgements. Racial prejudice just like homophobia or Islamophobia imply that you must suffer from an irrational fear to not like homosexuals or Mohammedanism. Again it’s a bunch of nonsense. More often than not those with real prejudices are precisely those white leftists living in their all white neighbourhoods complaining that the rest of us are evil for not appreciating what they have never experienced.

  • mobilebay

As Mark Cuban said, “we are all prejudiced in some way.” I know I am. I constantly wonder that because of our lax government laws, which of the M&Ms will get us first.

  • DaveMed

The Telegraph ran an article on this, and the comments there are heartening.

  • Richard

Must have missed what percent of the respondents were of minority status; certainly Britons are not ALL White? Without this fine tuned aspect of the study, it makes this less than accurate in terms of ferreting out real racism…and, being a meaningful endeavor.

  • Da Troof

I wonder how many others are, but won’t admit it.

  • IKUredux

What, exactly, are you saying? I’m provocative?

    • kikz2

nononono, so sorry… the comment was really just cautionary.. i shouldn’t have posted it as a reply to your comment.. you mentioned your neighbors’ reluctance to admit going against the herd. that triggered my posting….the article on provocateurs was something i’d read earlier in the day, and thought it important to keep in mind. as freakazoid as law-enforcement can be lately, we should all remember that they do practice entrapment.. exactly in the fashion that the article cautions against.

      • IKUredux

I read your link to Lew Rockwell. And, by the way, I have read L.R. blogs before. What he wrote is only partially true, anyway. Come on, most of it is crap. I could literally see where 100% of what he said applying to someone, and his analysis of their position as being false. Did he ever consider that people falsify their positions? without a motive? Or that people provoke honestly, while still meeting some of his descriptions?

        • kikz2

you’re certainly most welcome to take up your concerns with him…….

          • IKUredux

Yeah, I’ll get right on it. Meanwhile, on to provoke. Wait, do I meet Rockwell’s definition?

  • Singingbird1

The survey result figures are a con.The establishment are trying to equate the 30% of people who admit to being’prejudiced’ to the 30% or so of people who voted U.K.I.P. A not so subtle attempt to ‘blacken’ the name of UKIP supporters.
