NYPD To Businesses: Turn Security Cameras Toward Streets

CBS New York, November 30, 2013

The NYPD wants business owners to help solve crime in one Harlem precinct by turning their security cameras to the street.

As 1010 WINS’ Gary Baumgarten reported Saturday, police believe crime has spun out of control in the 32nd Precinct, which is bounded by St. Nicholas and Bradhurst avenues on the west, 127th Street on the south, and the Harlem River on the north and east.

With that in mind, the Precinct Cmdr. Rodney Harrison has asked local businesses to help the NYPD by turning their security cameras outward in an attempt to capture crime and assist police in capturing criminals. The program has been dubbed “Grid Search.”

Many nearby residents said it was a splendid idea.

“You’ve got a lot of these gang members out here attacking people for no reason,” said one neighbor, Dwayne. “They need to just put a lot of cameras up in storefronts to lower the crime rate.”

The New York Civil Liberties Union has also expressed concerns that the cameras could be used to spy on residents with no probably cause, according to a New York Daily News report.

    – CBS New York, November 30, 2013

The ACLU is opposed to any effort that is likely to reduce the crime rate.

    • NoMosqueHere

The ACLU is right in theory. Ubiquitous cameras are disgraceful in a free society. But bc the US is becoming a third world, crime infested hell hole, cameras become necessary. Our tolerance of third worlders and groids is destroying our liberty.

    • Jefferson

White members of the ACLU do not have a single racially aware bone in their bodies. The ACLU was full blown 100 percent pro-Trayvon Martin during the ZImmerman trial.

I remember card carrying members of the ACLU were saying that George violated the civil liberties of Saint Purple Drank Skittles.

      • JohnEngelman

Members of the ACLU are affluent liberals who want to help the poor. Life is not dangerous for affluent liberals. Life is dangerous for low income people. It is they who need the adequate law enforcement the ACLU tries to prevent.

Members of the ACLU suffer from what George Orwell called “money sheltered ignorance.”

  • DudeWheresMyCountry?

Harlem is known as being a crap hole. I wonder why. Harlem in the first half of the 20th Century was a wealthy and affluent district but the demographics changed and the area became a shanty district… i wonder why.

The 800 pound gorilla is getting harder and harder to hide.

    • RisingReich

The 800 lb gorilla is running around knocking out Whites with one punch, whilst the media tries to distract with JFK anniversary stories, holiday shopping stories, and ‘feel good’ stories telling us we need to donate to “Boys and Girls Clubs” to help the ‘disaffected’.

It used to be ‘good ole boys’ would ‘dispose’ of said gorillas and life moved on.

I can’t help but wonder when some closer to the edge Whites go looking for the gorilla and find it.

Typically doesn’t work out for the gorilla – which is good news.

      • Who Me?

Boys and girls club is absolutely the LAST place I’d donate to, (save the UCLA and maybe the NAACP)!
I have a middle aged aunt who is a “lady of size” is a nice way to put it. She is also a dyed in the wool liberal democrat. One year she bought a coat by mail order. The thing had a size 2X label in it, but it was W-A-Y to large even for auntie. You could have put a small village in the thing and still had room left over! She decided that rather than send it back and wait for a refund or exchange, and all that, she’d donate it to the Boys and Girls club. I told her that they wanted coats in children’s sizes (which would make sense) but she was adamant, so we took it over there. Nothing would do but she had to go watch the giveaway, so off we went on the appointed day. Well she got to see who received the coat she had donated, alright. Some Rachael Jeanteal lookalike snapped it up first off… There were several recipients there who could have fitted into the thing. All of them were the expected hue. I wasn’t even racially aware at the time and even then I could see that there was something wrong with the distribution of the color of the givers and the takers.
If I could find a charity that served under privileged WHITES, and actually used the money for the ones it was intended for rather than executive officers and advertising, I would be more than happy to donate. So far, I haven’t found one. I WILL NOT donate to further the whims of overfed savages who hate me and my kind for the color of our skins.

        • Actually there are poor villages of whites, Afrikaners which are Dutch descendents, in South Africa. I won’t go into the reasons for poverty here, just that the ANC Government requires blacks in all businesses and, as always, many Gov’t functions.

There appear to be some articles on-line about this as well as where to direct charity.

        • Pro_Whitey

There’s a good idea. I have previously tried to find a thrift shop connected to a Christian Identity church or the Northwest Front, but have so far been unsuccessful. I would appreciate any tips/leads, so I can be assured that I am helping white families.

  • Jefferson

Why is Harlem so violent in the first place ? it must be because of those New Yorkers who are Ellis Island descendents from Eastern Europe, Italy, and Ireland. (Sarcasm).

    • JohnEngelman

Harlem is violent because of white racism. Whites keep forcing blacks to commit all those crimes.

      • Jefferson

White privilege causes Blacks to chimp out. Eliminate White privilege, and all Blacks will start acting like Thomas Sowell and Bill Cosby. (Sarcasm)

        • You forgot “micro-aggression”. I don’t know what that is, but it’s apparently bad.

          • JohnEngelman

He also forgot “systematic racism.” I do not know what that is either, but it seems to be more of a problem than micro-aggression.

    • “Why is Harlem so violent in the first place ? It must be because of
those New Yorkers who are Ellis Island descendents from Eastern Europe,
      Italy, and Ireland. (Sarcasm).”

      ——————————-

Actually, that was the ethnic makeup of the original Harlem. Then blacks came up from the south after the Civil War … and the rest is history.

      • saxonsun

True. The actor Al Pacino was born and raised on 116th St. There are still good Italian restaurants there.

  • “No probably cause” (sic)

“Harlem” is enough probable cause for me.

Problem: If they turn the cameras outward, there won’t be cameras inward, meaning more crimes inside stores.

    • Who Me?

If they get individual store owners to point the cameras at the street, they can claim it is not a police state because it is private entities, not the government doing it.

  • Luca

I have a better idea, bring back Rudy Giuliani and the Stop, Question, Frisk program.

    • NoMosqueHere

We need to dig up Mario Proccacino.

    • JohnEngelman

And race profiling. Dog catchers are more interested in catching Pit Bulls than Irish Setters. Police need to scrutinize the behavior of poor ghetto black young males more than that of while youths.

  • willbest

I am curious, do the camera owners then get to bill the city for the hardware, electricity, maintenance, and data storage fees?

  • I have always wanted to document the number of cams I would be photoged by on my walk home in Chicago.

  • Spartacus

I can help you solve crime:

    1.Stop feeding the groids.
    2.Groids starve.
    3.Profit !

  • NoMosqueHere

The program has been dubbed “Grid Search.”

    How about “Groid Search?”

  • MBlanc46

1984, here we are. This is a noxious idea that no liberty-loving individual can tolerate. That said, how to deal with the epidemic of black violence? Western policing and judicial methods were developed for dealing with a basically civilized, law-abiding population. Can we maintain our civil liberties when a basically uncivilized, lawless population dwells among us?

    • JohnEngelman

Before the civil rights movement the South achieved that by reducing blacks to second class citizenship. That violated the Fourteenth Amendment and the Fifteenth Amendment, but it reduced the black crime rate against whites and blacks.

      • MBlanc46

It’s pretty clear that some restriction has to be put on their behavior to prevent them from creating an epidemic of violent crime.

        • JohnEngelman

Civil rights legislation could not compensate for the lack of several thousand years of evolution.

          • MBlanc46

And that’s now been pretty conclusively demonstrated. If only our elites didn’t prefer dogma to empirical fact.

          • JohnEngelman

With the civil rights movement the empirical facts only became apparent a generation after the legislation was signed.

When blacks were discriminated against one could reasonably believe that when the discrimination ended most of them would begin to behave and perform as well as most whites. Instead, black intellectual performance remained low. Black moral behavior became worse.

The civil rights legislation was a social experiment that failed. Unfortunately, it is dangerous to say in public that it failed. One is required to say that it was generally successful, but for a few problems caused by white racism.

          • MBlanc46

That’s pretty much my analysis of the situation. I was definitely a racial liberal or even radical in the 1960s and 1970s. But the failure to assimilate of so many blacks became so obvious that I finally had to change my view.

  • mikebowen55

Turn them around so that we can be sure to nab the next Bernard Goetz or George Zimmerman or someone who has the audacity to have a Big Gulp in their possession.

  • A Freespeechzone

As if security cameras will stop crime—look at the knockout videos proudly published on YouTube by these animals.

Animals don’t let video deter their violent behavior….this is a ‘feel good’ tactic that won’t work.

  • gemjunior

Let them have their “chocolate city” which is perfect set up for everyone. Stay there. Not allowed out. Well I guess when they are “unfairly targeted” by themselves, they will have to sue themselves for discrimination and then they will have to call Sharpton to march. It is a perfect demonstration of how they cannot take care of themselves, rely on others (yes, us) to do everything. It’s funny, blacks get to talk openly about their desire for a “chocolate city) but whites aren’t even allowed to vote themselves into a majority white district without the usual liberal nuts and groupthink victims going on and on…

  • It will be said that the cameras are racist.

  • Johnny Squire

Forget the cameras, residents should turn their guns towards the streets! (Yeah, I know, NY gun control and all).

Lefties always advocate the weakest forms of resistance to crime. They are never truly interested in law and order because blood in the streets gets them closer to the revolution they so desperately want.

  • Atheist Realist

i’m not necessarily opposed to the idea, but couldn’t one argue that it wouldn’t be as necessary now? (as opposed to the Lindsay-Beame era when crime was out of control)

  • Bobbala

If the cameras face out on the street, where are the beatings going to occur?

  • MBlanc46

I would guess that exposure to blacks is the primary factor in people becoming race realists.
