Bloody Chicago Weekend: 7 Dead, Dozens Hurt in Shootings

William M. Welch, USA Today, June 16, 2013

Gun violence flared over the Father’s Day weekend in Chicago. At least seven people died and 30 others wounded in shootings across the city, authorities said.

In a city beset by gun crimes, six died in separate shootings Saturday night or early Sunday morning, including a 16-year-old boy, authorities said.

One of the weekend’s victims was a man shot by police when he raised a handgun in their direction after jumping from a moving car and fleeing on foot, the Chicago Tribune reported, quoting police.

The Tribune gave this account of six of the deaths:

• One person died and three others were wounded in a shooting inside a club in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Todd Wood, 40, died later at a hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

• Ricardo Herrera, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene of a shooting in the Little Village neighborhood on the South Side. Five others were wounded in that shooting and a second one a short time later in the same neighborhood, police said.

• Kevin Rivera, 16, died after being struck by a bullet fired by someone on a bicycle in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side shortly before midnight, police said.

The weekend deaths brought a pall to a city that had been seeing some relief from gun violence. Homicides in Chicago soared last year even as the numbers declined in other major cities, but killings this year are down after heavier policing focused on gangs.

  • What is it about Chicago that makes guns so violent?

    • John Smith

Law abiding moral citizens don’t have them to provide the needed onsite counter weight to illegally armed criminals.

    • me

      LOL! You’re funny!
Seriously, though, anyone that’s not hypnotized by the PC brigade knows that we don’t have a gun problem in the United States–we have a Bantu problem. Bantus are not known for their restraint and foresight, so why are we pretending to ignore the huge African elephant in the room?

      • Romulus

Now thats funny. I hate admitting when the cholos and groids are right, but i couldnt care less if their whacking each other. I take it very seriously any infringement of law abiding citizens, however (us)! Yet because we’re not allowed to profile, the controlists feel the need to impede everyones rights.

That place is on the government money gravy train. Big money in busting down the doors of potheads, none at all for getting illegal guns off the streets (which also has the side benefit of thinning out the herd that they don’t bother to police).

  • Every weekend, there’s a shooting in Chicago, but the state will still vote democrat.
Did you people of Illinois allow your brain to rot by watching too much Married with Children?

    • Xerxes22

Married with Children was a great show before Fox ruined the show in it’s last two seasons by making it pc. As a result, the show lost a lot of viewers and was canceled.

What do blacks do for Father’s Day? Play with their kids? Nope, let’s shoot up the South Side again.

    • David Ashton

Who – or where – are the fathers?

      • John Smith

The liberals ran them off decades ago.

    • JohnEngelman

Most black men do not know who their children are. Most black women do not know who the fathers of their children are.

  • OhWow

    Black people. That is all.

    • Non Humans

There was a Hererra in there, too. Though the nonhumans are the bulk, give the criminal latinos their credit too. They all work so very hard to commit their non-crimes that we don’t want anyone going unrecognized.

Summer will soon be here. Temperatures will continue to rise. Chicago will soon become an even more dangerous place.

Look to yourself first if you want to be safe, citizens of Chicago

    • Temperatures have been very mild here so far. Yesterday it was nearly 90 degrees at 4pm, but by 8 it was about 50. Today, areas close to the lake it didn’t even hit 60.

I still say the reason they aren’t more “kills” is because Chicago emergency trauma surgeons have just gotten that good at saving lives.

      • 1970: Bellcurvius A shoots Bellcurvius B. B dies in the ER. A murder is logged in the official stat book.

2013: Bellcurvius A shoots Bellcurvius B. ER Trauma docs save B’s life. No murder is logged in the official stat book, but an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (depending on your state’s law) is logged.

To test your theory, someone should plot the murder rate and the aggravated assault (with a deadly weapon or 1st Degree or etc) rate on the same time-rate 2D graph. Just my sense of the matter is that the reality is halfway in between “better trauma care” and crime actually going down, in that you will probably find the aggravated assault rate declining maybe about half as fast as the murder rate since the peak of both at the peak of the crack wars.

        • There is only one problem with plotting this. And you know what this is. Murder is always murder or manslaughter. Whereas assault with a deadly weapon doesn’t always end up being recorded as such.

Repeat after me: they are just like us, they are just like us, they are just…..

  • The__Bobster

It looks like the “natural Republicans” have now moved up in the criminal ranks and might be displacing the usual Chicongo suspects.

  • A Freespeechzone

Notice that NOTHING is done to disarm the felon gang members–IF they were serious in Chicago, they would bring the National Guard, any and all force needed to disarm gang members…..

Of course they won’t do that—that would be racist….but, make no mistake that Chicago liberal politicians WOULD use whatever force they deem necessary to disarm anyone else that was a gun owner and not a threat whatsoever–other than to violent criminals.

Time for a loud, obnoxious and groundswell outcry that the Chicago law be applied equally….or repealed.

    • Non Humans

But, but, but in today’s Amerika Equal Enforcement is racism. Everybody knows that Equal Rights for nonhumans/squat-monsters means Special Rights. We can’t be having them disparately impacted now can we?

    • MBlanc46

“Notice that NOTHING is done to disarm the felon gang members–IF they
were serious in Chicago, they would bring the National Guard, any and
all force needed to disarm gang members…..”

Easy to say, much more difficult to do.

  • Spartacus

This is clearly caused by white racism, and anybody who says otherwise is a nazi. Shame on us !

  • Irishgirl

Here’s my (half-baked) theory: Father’s Day brings out the simmering resentment of this mostly fatherless segment of society, so they take out their aggression on each other – and, unfortunately, sometimes on us.

  • KenelmDigby

    ‘Father’s Day’ in Chicago?
Were they all shooting at non-existant phantoms?

  • 1) Father’s Day in Chicago is a day when a day when a fambily of five “honor students” sits around waiting for five fathers they don’t know to show up, but never do.

    2) Father’s Day in Chicago the busiest visitors day of the year at Cook County Jail.

    3) Father’s Day in Chicago is when Jamal shoots Dontavious because they both show up at LaTrina’s and are in rival gangs.

    • That’s “Chicongo”.

      • MBlanc46

Please not to insult my home. It’s a terrible fact of history that hundreds of thousands of displaced sharecroppers from the South washed up here during the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The neighborhoods that they took over, and have largely destroyed, are shooting galleries. But there are seven million people in the metro area, and most of them are decent, hardworking people, who have created a livable (if you discount the winter) environment that still attracts people from all over the country.

  • The Valentine’s Day Massacre, a traumatic event in Chicago history, saw seven kills.

Now, seven kills in a weekend is severe enough to be news, but not enough to be an eternal memory.

  • Strider73

And then the White Sox threw the World Series. 1919 was a really bad year in the Windy City!

Don’t write off the whites yet. The huge increase in white gun ownership is an encouraging sign. Do you really think that after spending all that money for those guns and bullets, the people will meekly hand them over? A “red summer” could easily be a reality, either this year or next.

  • MBlanc46

Nothing like Detroit. Chicago is only about one third black.
