Mexican New Yorkers Are More Likely to Live in Poor Households

Kirk Semple, New York Times, March 21, 2013

People of Mexican descent in New York City are far more likely to be living in poor or near-poor households than other Latinos, blacks, whites or Asians, according to a study to be released on Thursday.

Nearly two-thirds of the city’s Mexican residents, including immigrants and the native-born, are living in low-income households, compared with 55 percent of all Latinos; 42 percent of blacks and Asians; and 25 percent of whites, said the report by the Community Service Society, a research and advocacy group in New York City that focuses on poverty.

The rates are even more pronounced for children: About 79 percent of all Mexicans under age 16 in New York City live in low-income households, with about 45 percent living below the poverty line—significantly higher percentages than any other major Latino group as well as the broader population.

While the Mexican immigrants enjoy exceptionally high rates of employment, their salaries are not sufficient to support young families, the study’s authors said.

The study was commissioned by the Deutsche Bank Foundation following the publication of an article in The New York Times in 2011 about extraordinarily low educational achievement among Mexican immigrants in New York City. {snip}

“. . . their salaries are not sufficient to support young families, the study’s authors said.

That’s what White American tax payer dollars are for, it’s the “American” Dream. I mean its so damn obvious that this is all done by design to destroy. How can ANYONE in their right mind advocate the immigration of people who can’t even support their own children?

    • carocaput

If white americans had more children would they be doing any better?

  • Eagle_Eyed

Recently on CSpan a panel of leftist academics and politicians were discussing the poverty problem, offering up the typical excuses and going out of the way to blame rich white men-as if economies are zero-sum games and wealth can be horded to the detriment of others.

What’s funny is that, without a doubt in my mind, these same Marxists are in favor of mass 3rd world immigration–something which will undoubtedly increase the poverty problem in the US. What I would’ve given to ask that panel a question pointing out this fact…

  • bluffcreek1967

Why did they even need to waste money on such a study? Just walk around in any place that has a large population of Mexicans and you’ll see the poverty, run-down homes, gang graffiti and shaved-head ‘cholos’ squatting on every corner – just make sure you got your 40 calibre Glock with you. I never leave home without mine.

  • ArmenianWN

I bet that when your typical snotty freckled bespectacled Jewish New York liberal reads an article like this he thinks: ” oh, this must be the fault of racism and slavery (even though Hispanics weren’t enslaved ever in American history, but they aren’t white so who cares, and most slave owners were Jews, but don’t let the facts get in the way) and Jim crow. This is another compelling argument for more Amnesty and even more immigration!”.

This type of ridiculousness makes me wonder, what have white people possibly done to deserve diversity?

    • So CAL Snowman

We were just too damn successful for our own good, and our success threatened the so called “elite” of this world. In order to destroy us they need flood our lands with the most morally and intellectually bankrupt people on the planet – blacks and browns.

    • Derelictus

Most slave owners were Jews? Do you have a source for that? Not being hostile, just genuinely curious, the most I ever recall reading about the matter was that many of the owners of the slave-trading companies/slaveships were Jewish merchants.

    • saxonsun

My God, there were not enough Jews in the South to own any slaves. The slave owners were English, Scottish and Irish.

      • Katherine McChesney

        and Dutch.

  • White Mom in WDC

Well if you can’t feed them don’t breed them. Sorry but bussing tables in Manhattan is not a sufficient wage to raise a family. Or how about the brilliant idea of birth control or giving the kid up for adoption.

    • RisingReich

All that requires self control and an ability to conceptualize an abstract concept we White people refer to as ‘the future’. It’s obvious that squatters and bantus haven’t developed those skills.

      • White Mom in WDC

Scary is it not? And that’s what the elites want. Stupid people who they can snap their fingers at. Thing is, the elites did not look forward to the future either. Middle class people do because financially we have to but the elite did not have to with their inherited means BUT the elite’s sloth will bite them in the ass in the end. I will get a good laughter at it! Ha ha ha

  • The__Bobster

Nearly two-thirds of the city’s Mexican residents, including immigrants and the native-born, are living in low-income households…..

Really??!! Did it ever occur to the author than the stubbies bring their poverty with them due to their low intelligence and lack of education? Do skunks complain that their burrows stink?

    • mike

Of course all of this has occured to the author. But like Tim Wise, he doesn’t care. This is his gig man, the way he makes his moola.

      • SargeInCharge

Some of the Lefties are dumb enough to believe that the Mexicans are disproportionately poor because of institutional racism.

  • IstvanIN

Do they add in the value of Food Stamps, WIC, Medicaid and all the other goodies they get on behalf of their anchor children?

    • pcmustgo

Seriously, YOU GET MORE MONEY/BENEFITS THE POORER YOU ARE… this is how the game is played. You forgot subsidized housing, of which 1/4th of New Yorkers live in.

      • pcmustgo

The cut off for food stamps is $800…. it winds up making more sense to earn under $800 declared income and then get all the bennies.

Plus the Mexicans often work off the books, so who knows what their real income is.

        • IstvanIN

The gross income limit in NY for a family of 4 Mexicans is $2498 a month.

  • Tom Iron

Mexican New Yorkers Are More Likely to Live in Poor Households
That’ll always be the case with them. They can’t do anything else but be poor. Poverty is their occupation.

  • Mexicans are among the least educated and unskilled workers. They also have one of the highest high school dropout rates of any ethnic group.

  • IstvanIN

Wherever you have Mexicans, you have Mexico. Vincente Fox was right about one thing.

  • a multiracial individual

Not many lawns in the big Apple?

    • Unperson

That’s funny — but it also contains a lot of truth. There aren’t too many jobs mestizos are capable of doing in NYC. There are housecleaning gigs for the women, but for the men there are not the gardening and pool-maintenance jobs they do in California. Yeah, there’s drywalling, construction, etc, but there’s much less outdoor work. Which, I suppose, would cause Mexican households in the Northeast to be even less prosperous than in the Southwest.

But of course, some illegals from “South of El Border” still find ways to keep busy in Manhattan — murdering the beautiful actresses that Americans are too lazy to murder:

“You stalked and brutally attacked my wife, silenced her screams with your hand until you rendered her unconscious and then, in a brutal and gruesome act of cowardice, took a bedsheet and strangled her to death,” Ostroy said. “You tied her up and hung her the way you strung up pigs back in Ecuador.”

      • saxonsun

They have almost all the construction jobs in NYC–we have tons of construction going on in the city now and about 9 out of 10 workers are Mexican illegals.

  • pcmustgo

The other Latinos and Blacks would have just as high poverty without the affirmative action jobs, welfare benefits, etc.

At least the Mexicans work… and often they don’t qualify for most welfare programs.

    • So CAL Snowman

oh please, only the FIRST generation of Mexicans work. All subsequent generations go on the dole and live a sedentary, meaningless life of poverty and crime.

      • Paleoconn

      • RisingReich

        I think even that’s a bit generous.

    • StillModerated

Why aren’t there any Mehicans on Star Trek? They don’t work in the future, either!

      • I guess they did not need anyone to clean the Starship Enterprise.

        • Katherine McChesney

          It didn’t have a lawn.

  • pcmustgo

That being said, I feel a good chunk of “the poor” , including Mexican, do earn their keep and welfare bennies if they work the sh—- jobs for low wages. Someone has to do it.

    • RisingReich

That is a crock of sh—-. In many cases White people were doing those jobs and garnering a liveable wage in recent history, because White people wouldn’t work for squatter wages. Now the influx of squatters and stubbies has successfully driven down wages across the board, but it’s the lower wage White workers who are really suffering because of it.

No one ‘earns welfare benefits’. That’s ridiculous.

      • Feel the warm tenderness of diversity!

      • convairXF92

Question though. What % of these “lower wage White workers” have consumed meth or maryjane on the job? Compared to what % of Latino workers? Is there a drug issue which would make uneducated whites less likely to be hired for the “ugly” jobs, even without a wage issue? (Like, wouldn’t be hired at any wage, due to drug use.)

    • RisingReich

Who do you think were preforming those jobs pre-1965 mass invasion – Casper the Ghost?

      • Blacks and whites.

        • RisingReich

Yes and they were serving their own people, too.
Blacks serving blacks and Whites serving Whites.

      • convairXF92

See my comment above on poor-white drug use. The druggie era began with the Vietnam era, by coincidence not long after 1965.

    • So as somebody who sees more than a third of his income siphoned away each year for taxes, I’m supposed to be happy about subsidizing these invaders, and, indirectly, their employers? I’d rather pay higher prices for goods and services that I choose to procure, rather than be forced to have my income garnished regardless of my spending habits. Yes, at least the Mexicans work as opposed to the shiftless blacks, but make no mistake, their welfare bennies are not just welfare for them but are in effect a tax free subsidy for their employers.

    • verity

For someone called ”pcmustgo” you post a lot of politically correct comments, defending certain groups. If you believe political correctness must go, then do your part.

  • bigone4u

I was working with an Hispanic group at the university. We were doing a study of the poor. Many poor Hispanics report $0 annual income on their applications for benefits. Even the Hispanics working on the study commented that many of the Mexicans we were studying were earning siginficant sums of money off the books–unreported and untaxed. When reading stories about Mexican poverty, always remember that many work off the books and thus can afford $300 sneakers and $2000 rims while you, my friends, are supplementing that gangbanger, lowrider lifestyle.

  • mike

Notice that while concerned about the fact these people are poor there is no concern at all that they may be illegal aliens or that because they are poorly educated and working for peanuts they are undermining wages for citizens. Nope, those problems are for the white man, our author is instead another do gooding liberal who can only wring his hands and feel morally superior to us peasants that have to live with his grandiose ego. And it is ego not intellect at work here. If Semple was truly thoughtful he would see how supporting these illegals only encourages more of the same. Similarly one does not have to be too bright to understand that their gains in the US over their status in Mexico is at an equivalent cost to hardworking citizens. What a creep.

    • saxonsun

And of course, no concern whatsoever for poor whites who have always been totally ignored in the country.

  • Paleoconn

They needed to conduct a study to figure this out? Man, some people have money to burn

    • robin

it’s probably done on a grant from the taxpayer

  • Luca

“Nearly two-thirds of the city’s Mexican residents, including immigrants and the native-born, are living in low-income households”

Well. no surprises here. It’s what they do. It’s in there DNA. When the Spaniards found them they were living in a hunter-gatherer society not that far removed from the stone-age, living in grass huts. Not much progress has been made since. Evolution is a slow process.

    • Not true… they switched from grass to adobe huts. Now, that is progress!

      • Katherine McChesney

        They’re more advanced than blacks.

    • saxonsun

For some it’s an even slower process.

  • Varina

I left NYC in 1989. At that time I don’t think there WERE any Mexicans in NYC. The demographic changes are snowballing and we’re in a big heap of trouble.

    • Unperson

I left in 2000 and there were a few by then. By no means as prominent a group as the Ricans or even the Dominicans, but getting to be a noticeable number. Now, I expect, there are a lot more — both from immigration AND from the frightening fertility rates of the ones already here.
As if NYC didn’t have enough problems.

      • Katherine McChesney

        Are Dominicans criminal?

    • saxonsun

Here on the Upper East Side of NYC we’re absolutely swamped with Mexicans and it just happened overnight.

  • JDInSanDiego

Funny, but Mexicans in MEXICO Are ALSO More Likely to Live in Poor Households.

They’re motto is, “God will provide.” I know Mexican engineers who have said it to me. In other words, God provided you and your ancestors to build this country so they could move here and “just get by.”

  • Unperson

Note the wording of the headline:

“Mexican New Yorkers More Likely to Live in Poor Households”

In a white society that loved itself — or at least didn’t outright HATE itself — its major news organs would be asking WHY these Mexicans aren’t able to earn as much as Whites (and Asians). The mestizos’ inability to prosper in The Land of Plenty is not something to be pitied, but rather something they should be ASHAMED OF. (Instead, of course, it is implied that whites are the ones who should be ashamed!)

Also in my hypothetical non-self-hating white society, it would be expected that a responsible media organ’s obligatory follow-up questions to this finding about Mexican underperformance, would be not “What are we terrible awful whites DOING to them to inflict this suffering upon these noble peasants?” but rather “If these people are really that deficient at performing at the levels we whites are accustomed to, if these immigrants consistently fail to achieve the white American norm economically — and consequently require a disproportionate amount of white American tax dollars spent on them in social services — then doesn’t that suggest they just aren’t fit to play in the American league? Doesn’t this show them to be an undesirable immigrant group? Doesn’t it make a strong argument for the case that THEY DON’T BELONG HERE?”

  • Anon

I find it odd that there are any mexicans in New York City at all. There is a huge south american population in the city. These people universally think of mexicans as vermin. Unlike Americans who might privately think such things, these people are aggressive about acting on that opinion….and tend to do so in large groups.

Actually, I think I understate the case. In the countries these people are from, “mestizos” are hunted down and exterminated like vermin. That is the behavior these people are used to when different ethnicities come into contact with eachother.

Also, “poor” is deeply subjective. The CBO recently revealed that welfare recipients, on average, take home something like 25% more in resources than the average working family earns. Who then is “poor”? Not the people on welfare.

  • GeneticsareDestiny

B-B-But I thought Mexicans were innovative entrepreneurs who boosted the economy and created jobs for Americans!

  • Hard to tell if you’re poor when you live 10 to a house and most of your income is received in the cash-only shadow economy.

    Taxes are for suckers!

  • Rex Feral

I live in a low income housing unit and I can safely say that I have no problems living here. I can go downstairs and leave my door unlock, have no fear of assaults or crime. The people are friendly and quick to help out. Oh, by the way, I live in Canada, that’s why

  • jay11

Who was it who said, “If you want to reduce poverty, then stop importing poor people”? I remember that politico who said it was roundly criticized in the media.
