CNN Enhances Zimmerman 911 Call Again—And Reporter Now Doubts Racial Slur Used

Jonathon M. Seidl, The Blaze, April 5, 2012

Recently, CNN enhanced audio of George Zimmerman—the man who shot Trayvon Martin—to try and determine if he did, in fact, use a racial slur while calling police on the night of the shooting. Back then, it sounded like Zimmerman might have used the phrase “fu**ing coons,” and his critics have cited it as evidence of a racially-motivated attack. But now CNN has enhanced the audio again, and the reporter is casting doubts that the term was used.

“It certainly sounds like that word to me,” Gary Tuckman said when the audio was first enhanced. But after the latest enhancement, he’s not so sure:

Now it does sound less like that racial slur. … From listening in this room, and this is a state-of-the-art room, it doesn’t sound like that slur anymore. It sounds like … we’re hearing the swear word at first and then the word ‘cold.’ And the reason some say that would be relevant, is because it was unseasonably cold  in Florida that night and raining.

The audio expert agreed it sounded like “cold,” and said the new method gets rid of a lot more background noise but doesn’t change the voice or words.

Just like the Jared Loughner/Jared Taylor mix-up, the false story is page 1 on the banner headline, in ALL CAPS, surrounded by neon. And the retraction is buried on page 15A, nestled between Lifestyle and coupons for Campbell’s Soup. Too late. People are already starting to get physically hurt thanks to the media’s dereliction.

  • Of course it follows as the night the day that any White person who kills a black, under any circumstances, was by definition a hateful racist (and probably a member of the KKK, too.) That’s the mindset of so many in the mainstream media; they thought they heard a racial slur, and since that’s what they WANTED to believe Zimmerman had said, they ran with it.

Trouble is, he didn’t say it. But why let a little detail like that get in the way of a good story? The object is to hang George Zimmerman; and to the mainstream media, the end justifies the means.

From the information coming out lately,  it appears as if the black perp was actually in the  process of casing residences when he was spotted by Zimmerman.  The perp was between and behind the homes,  according to what Zimmerman told his father, which required Zimmerman to go to the front of the properties to get the address in order to report it to the police dispatcher.  It was in returning to his vehicle that Martin assaulted him.

Originally, the witnesses who saw Martin beating Zimmerman were ignored by the Al and Jesse show,  as well as ABC  who tried to convince its viewers Zimmerman had no visible signs of a beating.

Now I think it has finally dawned on all of them that they’re probably going to get sued, so they’re in damage control mode,  backtracking in an attempt to  portray themselves as fair and balanced.  ABC now sees the wounds;  NBC  has issued an apology for editing the 911 tape; and CNN discovered that they didn’t really hear a racial slur at all.

These same media bigots tried and convicted Richard Jewel of the Atlanta bombing, because they loved the idea of persecuting a white male.  They all eventually paid for it.

Persionally, I think this is such a cut and dried case of self-defense that no “stand-your-ground” law is necessary for an effective defense.

I wonder if fake conservative Michael Smerconish will now eat his words.

Fifth, Zimmerman seems to make a racist statement. After he reports that “he’s running,” the door to his truck can be heard opening. If Martin were running, that is hardly the behavior of a confrontational individual against whom deadly force need be used. And the blogosphere is on fire with conjecture that Zimmerman called Martin a “coon.” I raised the audio of that part of the tape, and it sure sounds like he said that. If it’s confirmed, that statement alone should provide sufficient probable cause to indict Zimmerman for a hate crime.

    • Hate crime, shmate crime. I listened to the entire tape yesterday; when Zimmerman says, “He’s running,” it’s obvious by the inflection of his voice that he’s giving up the chase. His voice drops at the end of “running.” If he had been about to give chase, it would have gone up, not down, at the end.

And the word he said sounded more to me like “cold” than “coon.” Or what if he’d said, “Effing cool”? That sounds even more like the so-called “hate word” than “cold” does. This dispute over one word has simply been ginned up by the Left and the race hustlers to try to prove “racism” on the part of a man who is of mixed race himself.

Oh my, the Phonycons…..almost as bad as the Demorats.

Medved, Hewitt, Hannity, SmerPhonyconish…..the whole lot….crazy, babysit-the-world globalists and warmongers.

    • It only sounds like that because they used a filter which removed the “p” sound. the word is PUNKS  no COON

  • Oil Can Harry

Don’t worry. After NBC “enhances” the tape once more the racial slur will appear again.

Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews and Rev. Al Pimpton are working on it as we speak…

  • Like he really said coon. Lets be serious. Doesn’t simple logic tell you how silly of an anachronism the word “coon” is? It isn’t 1898. He’d have been saying plenty of things but coon isn’t one of them.

    • xxxtonygunsxxx

exactly he is 28 coon weent out 25 years ago  I SAID HE USED GOON!!!! WHICH TO TODAYS YOUTH IS A TERM MEANING THUG OR HOOD GANGSTER ETC

  •  Sennheiser headphones ($350 variety) hooked up to an aftermarket sound card on my desktop box.  It sounded far more like “cold” than “c**n” to me.

    • xxxtonygunsxxx

his lawyer already said the term he used was  GOON on urban dictionary goon means just what tarvon was a thug gangster hood who was casing houses

  • I wonder if the experts who” revealed the racial slur” are the same ones who insist the screams heard on the 911 call are not Mr. Zimmermans. they staked their reputations  on their claim.

  • IstvanIN

At this point no reasonable person can doubt that not only is the main stream media biased against whites but that they are more than willing to out right lie to make us the villain.

  • I suspect that you’re either an old reporter, like I am, or you knew some very well. In almost 40 years of interviews, coverage of meetings, basketball games, trials, major fires, etc., I’d be afraid to guess how many hundreds of notebooks I filled. I never used a tape recorder or any other “lazy man’s” type of instrument to gather information about the stories I was covering. It was just my ears, my pen and my notebook. I still think it’s the best way. Any other method tends to make you complacent and lazy.

F——G  goons, they always get away…………….

  • tickyul

To me it does not matter if he made a racial slur. Heck, most people know that Mestizos are not too fond of Urban Americans.

The big question is when/why did Zimmerman shoot the Saintly Urban American Yute. From all I have heard, he shot the Yute because he was getting his face pounded in.

  • ncpride

You know, what I don’t get is that everyone keeps harping on the fact that this UNARMED teenager was shot. Um, he was 17. He was not supposed to be armed. If he had been armed, would that make it better for them? Maybe since gun violence is so common among young black males, thay have to point out that one was actually NOT  packing heat for once?

    • xxxtonygunsxxx

he was armed. he was using his arms to propel his fist into zimmers face and used his arms to grip zimmers head and smash it on the sidewalk and used his arm to grab for zimmers gun until zimmer greased him

  • JackKrak

My God, these people are shameless.

“Some are accusing G.Z. of using the word ‘coon’….” Classic media trick – the CNN’s of the world WANT that to be what was said but they can’t come right out and say that.  In cases like this they use what “some” or “others” or “sources” are saying, repeat it endlessly and then stand back and laugh as the riff raff try to sort out what really happened.

What kind of idiot would have to be say ‘F***** coon’ while on the phone with 911 even if that’s what you were thinking?

  • anmpr1

It’s just CNN (and NBC too) recycling the CBS “fake but accurate” meme.  Anyone who would go to the MSM for news might as well go to the People’s Daily for the skinny on the Chinese Communist Party.

    • gemjunior

I agree very much but have never been able to figure out why.  Why and How?  In what way does it serve the journalists and MSM to lie so much in favor of minorities being exploited at the hands of Whites.  All the MSM owners and CEOs etc are White, and most journalists.  And if there is an agenda, why would all journalists be lead meekly to their own eventual deaths without a word?  So many media conglomerate bosses are Jews and they must know that to blacks they are White.

      • IstvanIN

“They”” hate us more than blacks do and want us destroyed.  Pure and simple.  Never let mass numbers of alien people into your country, once they reach sufficient numbers mayhem starts.  Whites never seem to learn.

      • The_Bobster

Ah, most of them are not White, but they do have one thing in common: they want to destroy traditional America.

  • Djinn42

It doesn’t matter if there was a new video  close up of Zimmermans face mouthing the words, blacks and libs are going to hear the worst they can think of anyway.

  • Williamandmary22194–Your Daniel Boone comments at the end of your post caused me to remember a recent conversation I had with a college educated associate. She told me that Davy Crockett was a racist who skinned his black slaves and wore their skin as a hat. I couldn’t fathom where should would have gotten that infomation.  Then I realized that all they knew was that Crockett wore a “coonskin cap.”
What bothers me most about that was when I realized she wasnt joking, and she, as well as all of her friends, assumed that was a true statement.

    • IstvanIN

I wouldn’t be surprised if they teach that in school these days.

    • The_Bobster

Was she from the same group that is offended by the word “niggardly”?

  • anonymous_amren

First of all, shame on anyone who believes he says “cold” just because it’s convenient for your side. You need to have the same amount of skepticism about things that support your case, as you do about things that hurt your case.

He is clearly not saying “cold”.

There is clearly an /s/ sound at the end of the word, which rules out “cold”. If it’s actually an /s/ then he didn’t say “c**ns” because “c**ns” actually ends with a /z/ sound. It doesn’t sound like a /k/ sound at the start either.

If you look at it in any sound editor, you can see the shape of the wave file visually. You don’t need speakers at all. The /k/ near the end is obvious when you look at it because the sound cuts out, which wouldn’t happen with “c**ns”.

He is saying “punks”. The original article has an update showing that, but it was demonstrated on youtube long before that.

By the way, I think it was a police call, not a 911 call.

  • anonymous_amren

Japanese people say /r/ like a /d/, not like an /l/. But none of those sounds were present.

Use a computer and look at the waveform visually, you don’t need to use your ears at all.

  • sbuffalonative

When I first heard the original audio, I couldn’t make out what it was. Even when it was reported to be a slur, I still didn’t hear it as such.

The investigation of this case is odd. Why haven’t the paramedics who treated him been interviewed to confirm or refute Zimmerman’s wounds? Why haven’t we yet heard from the girlfriend?  It’s as if both sides aren’t investigating this fully.

  • ncpride

Testing…. Just trying to see if my DISQUS account is being moderated here as well. Apparently, another site didn’t care much for what I had to say… Which is of course the truth. They tend to frown on that sort of thing, no matter how polite you are.

  • IstvanIN

High end digital may be better than tube but you are correct in terms of every day equipment.  I have a friend who restores console tube radios, mostly 40s era.  Although mono the sound those sets put out is astounding.  You can really “feel” the sound, and not in the modern “boom boom” ghetto blaster way, but it is as if the speaker really moves the air.  The sound, especially over the air broadcasts, are beautiful sounding.  Nothing today compares.

    •  OMG NOT TRUE! I have a single ended triode 300b and a 2600 dollar Marants torroidal 600 watt amplifier with high end mosfets the best in the business. The Marantz cannot compete at all with the 8 watt tube amp. Sorry.

      •  Why? No circuit board. No squashed signal. Point to point silver wiring between each connection. Constant Push class A single ended design – theres no signal latency. Solid state? give me  abreak. Only if you want your music to sound dead and lifeless.

  • The_Bobster

On the TV show, he was a minority-loving libtard…….unless, of course, he was attacked by “bad” injuns.

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Punks or Coons? I always mix up those two words, don’t you?  because they’re nearly identical.

All this handwringing over a garbled word that sounded like an EPV on one of those silly ghosthunter shows while black thugs shout “cracker” and “Kill that White man!” while beating an elderly man to death or dousing a kid with gas and lighting him on fire.

CNN won’t be happy until Zimmerman is burned at the stake.

  • MikeofAges

I was a reporter. I took fragmentary notes and REMEMBERED what people told me. In two years I never made a significant mistake in quoting anyone.

Well, ten years later I returned to the same job, at another paper in another town. This time around I could remember what I saw much better, but no longer had the ability to remember what people said quite so well.

Time flies. Few people get the opportunity to observe so starkly how their cognitive functions change over time.

  • Impertinent

Here’s what I found….still doesn’t make much sense as applied broadly to blacks…

“Probably refers to the Portuguese word for slave pens or barracks “baracoons”. Could also have meaning as a shortening of “raccoon”, as raccoons have a tendency to steal.”

  • Impertinent

“where they might have encounters like this one should always carry audio recorders..”

I agree….they’re selling Ebonics recorders and pocket translators real cheap now in California. I heard they cost under $10! I asked why are they so inexpensive and was told it’s because they don’t have consonants or vowels.

  • WhitesRdumb

Would they have changed their story and “enhanced” all the evidence if Zimmerman was really white? After the media finally acnowledged that Zimmerman is Hispanic, and not white,  they suddenly discover that he might not be guilty.

  • the word is “F()*ing PUNKS” Duh!!
