Ward Connerly to Campaign for Affirmative Action Ban

Ward Connerly, the anti-affirmative action crusader who helped convince voters to ban race and gender from consideration in state hiring, contracting and school admissions in California, Washington and Michigan, today announced he is exploring nine other states.

The former UC regent, whose campaign first saw success in 1996 with Prop. 209 in California, has said he will persist until affirmative action is banned nationwide.

Connerly will visit Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah over the next 60 days and may start campaigns in all nine states, he said in a telephone press conference this morning.

“Three down and 20 to go,” Connerly said. “We don’t need to do them all but if we do a significant number, we will have demonstrated that race preferences are antithetical to the popular will of the American people.”
