Ex-NBA Player with at Least 8 Kids Files for Bankruptcy

Tim Eberly, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, November 11, 2007

Former NBA player Jason Caffey had two kids with his wife before she filed for divorce in Fulton County last year.

He also has had a slew of children—at least six others—with other women around the country, in and around Atlanta as well as in Alabama, Louisiana and Illinois.

Most went to court and got hefty child-support orders from Caffey while he was making millions playing professional basketball. Once he left the NBA in 2003, though, Caffey’s well of cash dried up like the shores of Lake Lanier.

But he was still on the hook for the payments. Now he has filed for bankruptcy in Alabama to get the women—and law enforcement—off his back.

Caffey’s attorney in Atlanta says his client agreed to the high payments because he could afford it. In a 10-year career with the Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks, the 6-foot 8-inch power forward made as much as $5 million a season.

Altman said he doesn’t know what happened to Caffey’s basketball money. Caffey did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Caffey, 34, filed for bankruptcy in August, but some of the women’s attorneys say he hasn’t ponied up in years.

According to bankruptcy documents, Caffey is nearly $2 million in debt and has about $1.15 million in assets, most of which is tied up in business ventures.

Among his other assets: two NBA championship rings he won with the Chicago Bulls ($10,000) and a 2006 Dodge Charger ($34,000).

Now living in Mobile, Caffey is a businessman, making $11,500 a month from a string of day-care centers and a sports bar, all in his hometown.

But he spends more than he earns—about $15,000 a month—forcing him to arrange a $50,000 loan from his mother, documents show.

Altman said he doesn’t know if Caffey is currently paying child support to any of the mothers.

“He’s a deadbeat,” said another attorney, Clarence Roby Jr., who is representing a Louisiana woman who had two of Caffey’s children. “If you choose to procreate and have children coast to coast and you don’t take care of those children, you’re a deadbeat.”

It’s not clear exactly how many children Caffey has fathered—and his lawyer’s not telling.

“It’s more than I have and fewer than what Evander Holyfield has,” said Altman, who has two children, compared to 11 for Holyfield.

The women listed as creditors in the bankruptcy documents had eight of his children—five boys and three girls between the ages of 3 and 14.

Two of those children were born to Caffey and his wife. They were married in August 1998 and separated in January 2006, but have not yet finalized the divorce. A settlement included $2,500-a-month child support payments, but Caffey never signed it and has not been paying her, Edwards said.

Locally, Caffey had children with at least two women: LoRunda Brown of Lawrenceville and Nicole Carter of Atlanta, according to court records.

Day care centers — oh, the irony of that, as his day care center probably has daily care of many fatherless black children.

If he had any sense of forward financial planning, he would have realized that he wouldn’t have made that kind of money forever, and would not have agreed to big child support settlements.

Elsewhere in today’s bevy of articles is a one lamenting the fact that many of today’s African children will not have the income of their parents. Not everyone made as much money as Caffey in his days of peak income, but his story is symbolic of the bad African behavior that leads to so many social maladies.

For heaven’s sake, this clod still makes $125K a year and has to borrow money from his mother? I’d guess that the great majority of posters on here would kill to have to “get by” on his income.

Several unbreakable laws about life today:
1) Make no money deals with Africans.

2) Do not allow your children to idolize sports Africans.

3) Physically and otherwise, stay totally away from African males.

3)

Looks like Jason Caffey desperately needs a tutorial in “future time orientation.”

Apparently he thought his playing days would last forever.

He made many millions over the years and has nothing but a pile of debts to show for it? This is typical of many black athletes and rap stars, absolutely no foresight or planning. An African and his money are soon parted.

Such typical black male mentality/thinking; no shame, desire for immediate gratification, no planning for the future, (Did the guy think he would be playing pro basketball in his fifties? Did he think his physical skills wouldn’t wane with the passing of years?) and no sense of responsibility. With the money he made he could have very easily been financially secure for the rest of his life and now he is reduced to borrowing money from his mother. I just don’t understand why decent White people part with their hard-earned money to make these black ‘athletes’ rich.

The average rate of childbirth per female in sub-Saharan Africa runs up to five offspring, and the life expectancy is around forty-five, if war, disease or famine doesn’t claim them sooner.

Procreating copiously, and saving nothing for a future they won’t live to see, is natural behavior for an African.

“But he spends more than he earns”

You people have no compassion!

Don’t you understand that there are laws that burden people of color, forcing them to do things that appear stupid, irrational, and even unlawful?

Black women are required to be on the phone at all times while driving; mestizo men are required to drive drunk; able bodied mestizo are required to park preferentially in handicapped spaces; and black men are required to spend more than they make.

Do you think that these intelligent and upstanding people want to do such reckless things? They must be required to make such bad choices. No sane persons would deliberately behave in such manner.

How many here suppose Mr. Caffrey is a devoted loving father who dotes on his offspring and their mothers?

Keep in mind the thousands of women who run around chasing athletes, intentionally trying to get pregnant in order to get that big monthly support check. The whole society is sick.

I have no sympathy for the whores who fathered his children. For them having a kid with a millionaire basketball star was simply a business venture - and businesses often fail.

I work for a bankruptcy attorney/trustee and YOU CANNOT bankrupt child support, even if you didn’t pay the support when they were minors and they are now over the age of 18. You couldn’t bankrupt support prior to October 17, 2005 and you can’t bankrupty support under the new laws.

Bankruptcy laws prohibit the discharge of child support, student loans, criminal fines - to name just a few. If his bankruptcy lawyer is trying to get his child support discharged, he ain’t going to be able to do it.

I dearly wish I had made “only” $11,500 a month for the last few years.

Since my taxes are being the ” father ” to his brood, instead of thisracist N.B.A. dead-beat , I get to re-name them; right ?

During the 1998-99 NBA lockout Patrick Ewing caused much chuckling nationwide when he proposed starting up a support fund for needy players. Now we know why — gotta keep up those support payments. I once read that each NBA player has an average of one illegitimate child. That means for every player with none, someone else has two or more. I wonder what the ratio is for NFL players.

Shawn Kemp, formerly the power forward or center with the Seattle Supersonics, is another one who if I remember correctly fathered eight children. Since his decline, I wonder who pays for their upkeep.

AmRen’s online publication took an in depth look at how many felons play in the NFL, and a book called “Pros and Cons” did the same with the NBA. It was instrumental in my no longer being one of the NBA season ticket holders, and I seldom watch the games on television anymore. Professional sports are really just an opiate for the mostly male masses to keep them willfully ignorant about the decline of their homeland. Certainly has proven successful.
