Abandoned Dogs Roam Detroit in Packs as Humans Dwindle

Chris Christoff, Bloomberg, August 21, 2013

As many as 50,000 stray dogs roam the streets and vacant homes of bankrupt Detroit, replacing residents, menacing humans who remain and overwhelming the city’s ability to find them homes or peaceful deaths.

Dens of as many as 20 canines have been found in boarded-up homes in the community of about 700,000 that once pulsed with 1.8 million people. One officer in the Police Department’s skeleton animal-control unit recalled a pack splashing away in a basement that flooded when thieves ripped out water pipes.

“The dogs were having a pool party,” said Lapez Moore, 30. “We went in and fished them out.”

Poverty roils the Motor City and many dogs have been left to fend for themselves, abandoned by owners who are financially stressed or unaware of proper care. Strays have killed pets, bitten mail carriers and clogged the animal shelter, where more than 70 percent are euthanized.

{snip}

The number of strays signals a humanitarian crisis, said Amanda Arrington of the Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington. She heads a program that donated $50,000 each to organizations in Detroit and nine other U.S cities to get pets vaccinated, fed, spayed and neutered.

Arrington said when she visited Detroit in October, “It was almost post-apocalyptic, where there are no businesses, nothing except people in houses and dogs running around.”

{snip}

She said pet owners who move leave behind dogs, hoping neighbors will care for them. Those dogs take to the streets and reproduce. Compounding that are the estimated 70,000 vacant buildings that provide shelter for dogs, or where some are chained without care to ward off thieves, Ward said.

Most strays are pets that roam, often in packs that form around a female in heat, Ward said. Few are true feral dogs that have had no human contact.

Ward said Detroit’s three shelters–his and two non-profit facilities–take in 15,000 animals a year, including strays and pets that are seized or given up by owners.

{snip}

With an annual budget of $1.6 million, Ward has four officers to cover the 139-square-mile (360-square-kilometer) city seven days a week, 11 fewer than when he took command in 2008. He has one dog-bite investigator, down from three.

{snip}

The officers, who wear bulletproof vests to protect themselves from irate owners, are bringing in about half the number of animals that crews did in 2008, Ward said.

In July, the pound stopped accepting more animals for a month because the city hadn’t paid a service that hauls away euthanized animals for cremation at a cost of about $20,000 a year. The freezers were packed with carcasses, and pens were full of live animals until the bill was paid.

{snip}

Pit bulls and breeds mixed with them dominate Detroit’s stray population because of widespread dog fighting, said Ward. Males are aggressive in mating, so they proliferate, he added.

One type of fighting pit bull has become known as far as Los Angeles as the “Highland Park red,” named after a city within Detroit’s borders, Ward said.

{snip}

Aggressive dogs force the U.S. Postal Service to temporarily halt mail delivery in some neighborhoods, said Ed Moore, a Detroit-area spokesman. He said there were 25 reports of mail carriers bitten by dogs in Detroit from October through July. Though most are by pets at homes, strays have also attacked, Moore said.

{snip}

Mail carrier Catherine Guzik told of using pepper spray on swarms of tiny, ferocious dogs in a southwest Detroit neighborhood.

{snip}

Last year, there were 903 dog bites in Detroit, according to Ward, adding that most go unreported to police. He said 90 percent are by dogs whose owners are known.

{snip}

Many de facto strays are called pets by owners who let them wander, said Kristen Huston, who leads the Detroit office of All About Animals Rescue, a non-profit that obtained the Humane Society’s $50,000 grant last year to feed, vaccinate and sterilize pets. Some dogs run away from their neighborhoods and threaten people, she said.

“Technically, it’s illegal to let a dog roam, but with the city being bankrupt, who’s going to do anything about it?” Huston said.

Maybe the Army could get some sniper training in by infiltrating the semi-abandoned sections of Detroit, setting up hides and practicing by taking out packs of dogs. Win – Win. The Army gets cheap realistic training in a challenging urban environment and Detroit clears out some of the 50,000 strays.

    • MekongDelta69

      Wrong targets

      • Jesse James

I figured one of you guys would say that. Dogs forming packs are no joke. In Madison County GA some “owned” dogs formed a pack and were starting to be a nuisance but nobody got around to doing anything about them until they killed a retired college professors wife while she was walking her dog. Then they killed her husband when he came looking for his wife as she was late coming back to the house. Dogs running wild in packs need to be put down ASAP.

        • Greg Thomas

We are talking about Detroit. The dogs serve a purpose. I hope the dogs will be ok.

          • IstvanIN

What if the packs wonder into white neighborhoods or suburbs?

          • Greg Thomas

Simple. They will have to be dealt with.

          • NeanderthalDNA

            Those still exist there?

          • John Johnson

Now that’s a problem. But as long as they stay in the black section – no problem.

        • bigone4u

No dogs need to be put down. Even Michael Vick’s dogs were rehabbed and placed in loving homes. They’ve turned out fine.

          • Jesse James

Every city and town in the country has a surplus of dogs and cats that were allowed to breed by irresponsible owners, many who are abandoned and go feral. Every single one of these places has to put excess animals down and you think there are enough loving homes to take the 50,000 strays in Detroit when they can’t even take care of the animals in their own home towns? I often agree with you bigone but in this case you are letting your sentimentality override your common sense.

        • Wethepeople

Why? There are very few people left in Detroit. Animals kill animals, that’s how the world works. 700,000 vs 50,000 ill put my money on the dogs reclaiming the city from their cruel torturers.

        • John Smith

When I lived in the desert many years ago, we would fire a warning shot at feral dog packs that wandered onto our land. You had to know what you were doing though because while most of the time they would lope off, sometimes they went into attack mode and came on. Then it was a case of self-defense and your firearm better not jam.

        • Jesse_from_Sweden

          Sounds kinda like africans then.

They are also dangerous when forming packs.

And other things in this article seems to confirm it.

Most strays are pets that roam, often in packs that form around a female in heat, Ward said. Few are true feral dogs that have had no human contact.

Males are aggressive in mating, so they proliferate, he added.

In other words, just like the typical african.

    • Oil Can Harry

Why kill the dogs? They’re now the highest-IQ group in Detroit…

      • Whitetrashgang

Well isn’t it why they kill white people?

    • Whitetrashgang

Your thinking of the wrong targets, otherwise a nice post.. Plus you could make a nice Cheerios ad for TV and even radio.

      • Jesse James

I would make a better Cheerios ad than the one you are probably thinking about. Not sure how you leap from my post to suggesting I am pro-miscegenation. I am not thinking of any “targets”, I just live in the rural South and we put down dogs that run wild in packs because they are a threat to our families.

        • Whitetrashgang

No its not the dogs, also had the best girlfriend from Kentucky close to that at all?

    • John Johnson

I would prefer to use the inhabitants before the Dogs. Dogs are useful, the humans of Detroit are not..

  • WmarkW

Compared to 700,000 mostly unemployed blacks, who cares?

  • bigone4u

I have talked about my love of dogs here before, especially pitbulls, the “Nanny dog” of a hundred years ago, when every white family had a loyal pitty around to protect their children. Sgt Stubby, the hero dog of WWI was a pitbull as was the Buster Brown shoe dog and the Little Rascals’ Pete the Pup. The official name is the American Pit Bull Terrior, and pits are truly the all-American dog. Blacks who turn pitbulls mean and fight pitbulls should be given the death sentence as far as I am concerned. Ironically, the only dogs of mine who ever bit me were the allegedly gentle breeds. Just as whites are getting a bad rap as “racists” in the MSM, so are pitbulls getting a bad rap as monsters. It’s the black thugs who are monsters.

    • Puggg

Is the APBT and the American Staffordshire Terrior the same breed or closely related breeds?

      • bigone4u

My understanding is the Staffie is closely related to the Pit but is smaller. The lady at the storage unit place had a little girl Staffie with a pink collar who would always run to greet me when I was working my storage unit. It was often one of the high points of my day.

    • bigone4u

I think a lot about the thousands of lives Sgt Stubby saved. This is a pic of him wearing his medals. There are other pics showing him marching in the parades as the white doughboys came back from WWI.

  • MekongDelta69

Question on the new, ‘non-racist’ SAT:
    Pop. of DIE-Troit – 700,000
    % blacks – 82%
    # of blacks – 574,000
So – 574,000 blacks vs. 50,000 pit bulls.

    Q. How much money should I charge to watch the show?

  • Better to be a dog in Detroit, than a dog in southeast Asia.

  • Oil Can Harry

Blacks and Hispanics are known for animal abuse. These poor dogs may be better off abandoned.

    • exlib93

When viewing the various animal rescue shows on television, I notice the vast majority of neglectful owners appear to be black.

  • Jefferson

Percentage wise, how many Whites need to inhabit Detroit in order for it to resemble a civilized 1st world city again ?

  • Spartacus

“Most strays are pets that roam, often in packs that form around a female
in heat, Ward said. Few are true feral dogs that have had no human
    contact.”

    ———————————————————————————————————————

How could they be in contact with humans in Detroit ?

    • Evette Coutier

It seems that the dogs have learned to imitate the behavior of Detroit blacks. No wonder there is a city wide animal problem.

    • dd121

I had a second-hand pit bull as a kid. It found me and was the most loyal animal I ever had. My dad thought it must have been owned and abused by blacks because whenever it got close to any black person the dog went crazy. My loyal pet taught me everything I ever needed to know about blacks. 🙂

      • A friend had a pit-dalmation cross follow his son home. It was the most affectionate animal I’ve ever met, but went bonkers near blacks, like the difference between night and day.

        • Luca

The more I learn about blacks, the more I respect my dog.

      • Spartacus

Dogs usually have good instincts, better than libtards…

        • Wethepeople

Is quite true, last month I was making lunch and looked out my window and saw two Bantu harassing my neighbors 15 year old daughter, so I whistled for my blue tick and headed into the street. He came running out of the door and to my side, and promptly started baying at the filth. At this point they backed away from the girl and asked if he’d bite, to which I relied ‘They don’t call them coonhounds for nothing.’

      • CoweringCoward

I had a Rottie named Ralph, he had a natural hate of blacks and often sent the wayward postal worker bounding over our chainlink fence. He was smart, in that he would silently await entry, then… One time I saw a black mail carrier (the only kind in my area) come up to the fence and just pepper spray him for no reason, maybe I had the aid of “trainers” I was not aware of.

  • robert

Black can not take care of themselves, it is totally unreasonable to expect blacks to be able to take care of dogs.

  • Luca

I believe the History Channel is going to bring in a camera crew and record a new series based on their successful series “Life After People”.

The new show will be called entitled “Life After Whites”. Watch all sense of civilization disappear before your very eyes as roving packs of feral animals roam the streets chasing, killing and destroying everything in their path. And I’m not talking about canines.

    • exlib93

      That’s hysterical!

    • Harry

Yes, just imagine what if both the white and Asian races go extinct like the Passenger Pigeon! It would be a complete collapse of civilization, without “whitey” to blame!

      • Strider73

OTOH, life after blacks go extinct will be far better for everyone else — once the corpses are disposed of, that is.

      • Rhialto

What would probably occur (IMHO) is that Blacks would quickly regress technologically to about 20000 BC, with all Blacks located in Africa. After that, natural selection among those who migrated to colder climates, would in time create races equivalent to Caucasians and Mongolians. I am assuming that other non-Africans races are also extinct.

  • Whitetrashgang

Wouldn’t it be peachy keen if some of the dogs acquired a taste for ni66er and those dog would be allowed to reproduce? Or the dogs could be equipped with flame throwers and replace the police, parking authority and mayor. Detroit the new Africa what could go wrong?

    • All those dogs need is rabies, and since that’s endemic to North America, it’s only a matter of time. India has the highest rate of human rabies cases in the world, mainly transmitted by bites from stray dogs, and 20,000 people a year die there of it.

The dogs that had their shots before being turned loose won’t catch it, but their offspring, as well as unvaccinated dogs sure can.

      • Bossman

You’re the self-described science man in this forum. Don’t dog poop carry lethal germs? Why are so many poor people both black and white owning dogs these days? Everywhere I go these days I see people picking up poop from their dogs and just throwing it in garbage cans.

        • Heartworm comes to mind, but this is spread by mosquito bites, and people are very nearly immune. Parvovirus is spread by canine body secretions, but people don’t get it. I suspect the main worry associated with dog poop is fecal E. coli bacteria contamination. Cat poop can contain a protozoan Toxoplasma organism that is NOT good if it ends up in your vegetable garden soil; people can catch this, and protozoan infections can be difficult to cure (like malaria and Chagas).

If pet waste is allowed to remain outside, fecal E. coli will end up in stormwater runoff, and thus in streams and lakes. This would make the fish potentially hazardous to eat. If it is put in sanitary landfills, it winds up in groundwater. An additional complaint about pet waste being left outside is that during the summer, many people barbecue outside. The weather is pleasant, and this avoids heating up the house by using kitchen appliances for cooking. The same flies that land on pet waste will also land on your dinner, which again makes E. coli a potential problem.

          • Bossman

Thanks for a summary of the potentials hazards of pet poop.

      • Strider73

Even vaccinated animals will be at risk for rabies if they do not get periodic boosters. Veterinary science has recently come up with 3-year rabies shots; my cat certainly likes those better than the annual ones.

Then there’s distemper, leukemia, worms and various other maladies that the former pets will be vulnerable to without regular preventive care.

        • People can catch distemper, but the various forms of contagious leukemia are normally caused by slow-acting viruses that are usually genera-specific.

  • dd121

This is all Bush’s fault, you know.

  • Freedoooom

Moscow has stray dogs, they are quite fine. Would prefer them to blacks.

  • dulouz

Those dog bodies would make lots of biodiesel

    • Whitetrashgang

I would rather have biodiesel made out of the other residents, finally a use for blacks after all these years.

  • Bell Curve City is notorious for packs of wild dogs running around uninhibited. They are almost always jettisoned pets of the more vicious breeds. Certain people just don’t grok animal husbandry.

St. Louisans will remember the Rodney McAllister death by dog pack back in 2001.

  • borogirl54

I know that the Humane Society in Detroit used to euthanize all Pit bulls and Pit bull mixes because so many of them were used in dog fighting. I guess they must have run out of money.

    • bigone4u

Glad they ran out of money then. No kill shelters are the only humane option worthy of civilized mankind.

      • borogirl54

I agree with you that dogs should be put down only when they are a danger and are not able to be rehabilitated. I believe only about one or two of the Michael Vick dogs were euthanized, the rest were rehabbed and became family pets. There are many pit bull rescue groups that should go to Detroit and get these dogs and find them new homes.

        • Ella

Most parents with younger children do not want to take the risk of adopting pit bulls. I have adopted many dog breeds in my days, but some dog breeds are too strong for children like Rotts, Pitts, Akitas, Malamutes and ect. They are great dogs if you know how to handle their active and stubborn temperament. There is a connection between abusive dog ownership and excessive breeding. Tax-payers sure clean up too many messes.

    • The Humane Society didn’t run out of money; they stopped when their freezers were full and the city quit paying for pickup of the dead animals.

  • Puggg

This is a tough story for me. Because I’m not sure if sending in an army of pugs, my usual solution for everything, will do any good.

  • Viking_61

    Hopefully the dogs take over.

    • Bossman

I hope you like dog poop.

  • Funruffian

Detroit is a Post-Apocalyptic city alright. The description of these stray dogs running amok while the surroundings are dilapidated and fraught with anger and horror sounds like the premise of some bad Hollywood movie.
But I doubt Hollywood would ever dare embark on a Politically incorrect aphorism against Detroit and their most protected race.

Just like a science fiction movie depiction of the aftermath of the apocalypse.

  • BonusGift

Alright, I read through the comments and is it just me or is there an obvious heartless/non-YT multicultural fix here? Move in some Vietnamese and/or Chinese and magically the stray problem is solved. Of course the obvious solution is to get rid of the blacks but we all know that it would be ‘racist’ to point out the obvious truth; better to create a larger problem than solve the root cause of the problem. Sarc. off.

    • What happens to stray dogs in Vietnamese neighbourhoods? lol

      • OlderWoman

Perhaps they serve them up in stir fry.

        • That actually happened in Denver when Vietnamese boat people were settled in Hispanic neighborhoods there after Saigon fell in 1975. The greasers let their dogs run loose, and the Viets ate them. Happy times for diversity!

  • Bossman

Too many lowlifes own dogs these days. I’m so tired of seeing people with gloves in hand picking up dog poop from their dogs in public places and just throwing it in garbage cans. Garbage men must be hauling tons of dog poop these days. I feel sorry for them.

    • Harry

I have what I cal fecial phobia, is that I am afraid of feces. So yes, I certainly do feel sorry for what Garbage men have to deal with!

  • jeffaral

Dogs instinctively hate black people. There must be a reason….

    • Jesse James

Not all dogs, I grew up in the south and where I lived black dogs hated white people and white dogs hated black people. I think different races/cultures just smell different and that is what sets the dogs off. It is like cultures that are mostly vegeterian hate the smell of westerners because we eat too much meat. Likewise think how “spicy” and unappealing some Indians smell to us.

  • [Guest]

    >>>“Technically, it’s illegal to let a dog roam, but with the city being bankrupt, who’s going to do anything about it?”

The same thing can be said about a lot of things besides dogs.

  • Ella

You see these roaming packs mostly in Third World countries, so add Detroit to the list. Pit bulls and Rottweilers make up at least 1/3 of the available dogs at our pet shelter. I frowned on the “unaware of proper care” as if fighting and guard dog breeds have never influenced their choices. News always covers for them.

  • bigone4u

With all of his heroic deeds, Sgt Stubby should have his own memorial in DC, not Martin Luther King.

  • bigone4u

I had a pit bull as my best bud for 12 years. I recently saved the life of a neighbor’s pit bull when he got loose and was running around in traffic. He kissed me to thank me for it. Dogs, including the fighting breeds, are bred to be gentle toward humans. Eugenics you might say. Cesar Milan has a famous pit bulls page on his web site. I’ve inserted a pic of Tige, the Buster Brown shoe pit bull. Gangbangers can make any dog or person mean.

  • jeffaral

Roaming dogs are not a problem, but roaming blacks are.

  • John Johnson

You can’t expect blacks to take care of animals, they don’t even raise their children.

  • A few years ago some crazy Englishman set up a charity called “Donkeys for Darfur” with the aim of establishing a donkey sanctuary in Darfur, this occurred when the media was giving a lot of attention to Darfur and portraying it as the next biggest genocide, (how that disappeared), I remember thinking at the time “wow, how very English, to care more for animals than actual humans”, shortly after I got a chance to visit that part of the world and when I saw how the Africans treated animals, donkeys pushed to unbelievable limits and constantly beat with over the head with heavy sticks, horses tied up with rope so tight their throats were completed raw, I saw a young African being beaten and kidnapped by militia thugs who were pressganging him into service, but it didn’t bother me, one night though I stood in the darkness although I was in a large town there was no electricity and listened to a donkey braying in pain, that touched me, it seemed to go on for hours, to me the human misery was nothing compared to the misery that was inflicted on the animals, they didn’t even comprehend the basics of animal husbandry that a well cared for beast will give you better service for longer and looking at them they seemed devoid of any empathy. I have no problem with killing my own food but I think if you treat animals cruelly then you will also treat your fellow humans badly. Blacks by and large are devoid of compassion, although in fairness on occasion my black driver did share his food with the children that just seemed to be everywhere, many of them almost like a caricature would run up to you with a begging bowl, but when have you ever seen a charity that is organised exclusively by Africans for African and preforms its work with the same passion that white people do? Anyway that trip convinced me the Englishman was right, give the so called humans nothing but yeah animal/wildlife are much more deserving of our care.
