The story follows the choices made at every level of society as a horde of immigrants sets sail from India for France. The immigrants chose France because they had heard about its wealth and openness.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Vauban Books Editor in Chief Ethan Rundell was responsible for providing the English translation for the edition of The Camp of the Saints that Amazon removed. Rundell, who studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, told the Daily Caller that while he expected something like this to happen in England he never expected the U.S. to embrace the anti-free-speech policies implemented by Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the dire predicament of free speech in Great Britain, I have long been prepared for something like this to happen there. It never occurred to me that it was in the United States that we would first feel the bite of censorship,\u201d Rundell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamp has consistently been ranked in the top 10,000 books on Amazon since its release last September and during that time has spent long periods as the best-selling book in a number of sub-categories (French literature, Immigration &amp; Emigration year of efforts to dismantle the federal agency, pushing the hope of restoration for certain programs further out of reach for opponents.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), used to support English language learners, is the latest of dozens of programs that have been broken up or moved by the Education Department to fulfill President Trump\u2019s campaign promise to shut down the agency.<\/p>\n<p>While opponents have not lost hope the department can be rebuilt, the task becomes more difficult by the day with programs shuttered, thousands of employees fired and some initiatives transferring to completely different federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Education Week first reported that the Education Department sent a letter to Congress back in February informing lawmakers of the intention to shut down OELA.<\/p>\n<p>The office has managed almost $1 billion in Title III funds to support the 5 million English language learners in U.S. schools, helping schools and educators cover the costs of services and teacher preparation for these students.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>While the official notice was put into place in February, work at OELA and other offices has been diminished for a year after the Education Department slashed its workforce from 4,000 to 2,000 employees last year.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>The Education Department has announced numerous interagency agreements, including major changes such as moving the federal student loan portfolio to the Treasury Department. The funding is provided through Exceptional Case Funding, introduced in 2012 after most immigration legal aid cases were removed from scope.<\/p>\n<p>Migrants have been found to be invoking the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in order to access legal aid to support them in cases not considered \u201cexceptional\u201d, securing thousands of pounds in legal support to challenge Home Office decisions or block deportation orders.<\/p>\n<p>Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy thundered<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Parliament passed laws to crack down on legal aid for immigration cases. But ECHR loopholes and rights-based claims have allowed claimants and open borders activists to undermine the will of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>We must leave the ECHR. It is the only way we can scrap legal aid for immigration cases and stop these vexatious human rights claims for good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The issue comes amid continued pressure on the immigration system, including illegal Channel crossings. Nearly 600 migrants crossed into the UK on Saturday, April 18th, thanks to a combination of weather conditions and smuggling networks modifying their routes.<\/p>\n<p>Border Force sources estimate that around 250 people departed from Belgian coastal areas on the same day, contributing to approximately 585 arrivals in UK waters. Then She Lost Her Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During Billie Little&#8217;s roughly two decades working at Thomson Reuters, she felt pride in the company, which is known for its legal database Westlaw, its media company Reuters, and its role as a major data broker.<\/p>\n<p>But as masked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents swarmed Minneapolis early this year and the country reeled from federal agents fatally shooting Ren\u00e9e Macklin Good and Alex Pretti, Little and other colleagues grew alarmed that ICE agents could be abusing Thomson Reuters investigative tools that provide vast quantities of personal data on people including license plate information.<\/p>\n<p>Little, who worked in legal publishing, was part of a committee of employees that sent a letter to company management in February flagging that ICE could be using Thomson Reuters products unlawfully and asking for greater transparency about the company&#8217;s oversight of its contracts with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE. Soon after their effort was made public in the media, however, Little was fired from her role.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Little is now suing the company, arguing that her dismissal violated a law in her home state of Oregon that bars employers from firing whistleblowers.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Thomson Reuters, which is headquartered in Toronto, is also facing pressure from shareholders over its ICE contracts.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Not all employees had been aware that Thomson Reuters has held tens of millions of dollars in contracts with ICE in the last several years for its data and investigative tools.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key products Thomson Reuters sells to law enforcement agencies, including ICE, is called CLEAR, which aggregates billions of data points on individuals from public and proprietary records, as well as social media. CLEAR&#8217;s platform also includes images from a network of license plate readers. ICE has a nearly $5 million contract with Thomson Reuters from May 2025 for &#8220;license plate reader data to enhance investigations for potential arrest, seizure and forfeiture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Little&#8217;s own work at the company had nothing to do with CLEAR. But she had heard over the years that it was being used to go after human traffickers or child exploitation crimes.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>The company has previously asserted that CLEAR was not intended to be used to help deport undocumented immigrants with no criminal records.<\/p>\n<p>A Thomson Reuters description of CLEAR that no longer appears on the company&#8217;s website but was archived by the WayBack Machine says it is &#8220;not designed for use for mass illegal immigration inquiries or for deporting non-criminal undocumented persons and non-citizens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Company documents from as recently as February that outline the terms for using CLEAR say that vehicle registration data shouldn&#8217;t be used for immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>But as news stories showed dramatic increases in the number of immigrants arrested without any criminal history, Little said she began to doubt the company&#8217;s line.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>She and other employees formed a group they called the &#8220;Committee to Restore Trust,&#8221; which sent a letter to management on Feb. 20 that was signed by about 170 employees. Some 27,000 people work for the company globally.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Five days after the Times article was published, Little was summoned to a meeting with HR where she was told she was being investigated for violating confidentiality and data sharing policies, according to her lawsuit. A few days later she was fired. Instead, they\u2019re looking to rent out a whole parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>ICE put out a call for information from parties interested in securing a contract with the agency for up to 150 parking spaces, according to a government procurement document posted online on April 16. The infamous immigration enforcement agency is looking for a lot in the vicinity of its Varick Street field office in Hudson Square, just south of downtown New York City\u2019s tony West Village.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>The new request for information about potential contracts says, \u201cThe ICE NYC Field Office is seeking no more than 150 exclusive secure, reserved indoor parking spaces to accommodate a mix of SUVs, mid-sized vans, and mini-buses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are at least a dozen parking garages within a quarter mile of the office operated by ICE\u2019s Enforcement and Removal Operations at Varick and West Houston streets, the distance specified in the request for information. Among the other requirements listed are 24\/7 security monitoring, a single designated space within the facility for ICE vehicles, key-card access controlled by ICE, and a minimum height clearance of 7 feet and 6 inches. (ICE and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)<\/p>\n<p>The posting of the procurement document comes as one of the agency\u2019s go-to parking spots in the area is set to become unavailable to ICE vehicles. Rush to Apply Under Spain\u2019s New Mass Legalization Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Migrants in Spain on Monday began applying in person to legalize their status after the Southern European nation launched an amnesty measure that could affect hundreds of thousands of foreigners living and working in the country without authorization.<\/p>\n<p>The program was announced in January and finalized this month. It offers immigrants without legal status a one-year, renewable residence permit if they have spent five months living in the country and have a clean criminal record. They have until the end of June to apply.<\/p>\n<p>There have been questions about the short window to process what Spain\u2019s government has said could include 500,000 migrants, and which Spanish think tank Funcas estimates is around 840,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Over 370 post offices opened their doors to applicants and the government has said they also can apply at 60 social security offices and a handful of migration offices.
