Public University Spends $16K on Campaign to Warn Students to Watch What They Say

Samantha Audia, College Fix, February 9, 2015

Dozens of posters plastered across the University of Michigan caution students not to say things that might hurt others’ feelings, part of a new “Inclusive Language Campaign” at the state’s flagship public university that cost $16,000 to implement.

Words declared unacceptable through the campaign include “crazy,” “insane,” “retarded,” “gay,” “tranny,” “gypped,” “illegal alien,” “fag,” “ghetto” and “raghead.” Phrases such as “I want to die” and “that test raped me” are also verboten.

University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald told The College Fix in an email the campaign aims to “address campus climate by helping individuals understand that their words can impact someone and to encourage individuals to commit to creating a positive campus community.”

Students have been asked to sign a pledge to “use inclusive language” and to help their peers “understand the importance of using inclusive language,” according to campaign materials.

Though only in existence for one semester, the Inclusive Language Campaign has maintained a strong presence throughout the university. Students roaming the campus frequently encounter posters of all sizes reminding them: “YOUR WORDS MATTER,” and asking questions such as: “If you knew that I grew up in poverty, would you still call things ‘ghetto’ and ‘ratchet’?”

ILC’s Facebook page includes a variety of inclusion-based material, inspirational quotes, personal stories, and even a video that details how to address a person by the correct pronouns. It operates in conjunction with two other campuswide initiatives, Expect Respect and Change It Up!, both of which emphasize inclusive words in and out of the classroom.

Students living in university housing are urged to take part in a Change It Up! workshop, which “brings bystander intervention skills to first-year housing residents for the purpose of building safe, inclusive, and respectful communities.”

  • RUSH: Words you can still use, University of Michigan. Tea bagger, cracker, redneck, right-wing fascist, Nazi. Those words are still permitted.

Source: At the end of this:

Note: Rush is not from St. Louis, in spite of the graphic. It’s just that Cape Girardeau lacks an iconic skyline. Or even a skyline.

Control of diction is central to leftist cultural hegemony.

    • Paleoconn

QD, I beg to differ. Those words you list are not words that can still be used. Those are words that MUST be used. Bigotry against Whites is encouraged, if not celebrated.

    • Speedy Steve

An item in my local newspaper mentioned that there’s a shortage of skilled electricians. Study electricity White people! Study welding and plumbing, too. Avoid college like the plague.

      • A two-year associate’s degree in a skilled trade will gain one a breadth of knowledge that no employer will obtain from an illegal alien.

      • Yes, get a job that illegals don’t do; minorities don’t like; and that can’t be outsourced. No wonder so many White guys are automobile technicians, plumbers, and electricians.

  • dd121

Could somebody explain why this is any less oppressive than any communist regime that was ever in existence?

    • Usually Much Calmer

We don’t have to stand in line for food. . . .yet.

      • Sick of it

Quite a few white people don’t even have that luxury, being out of work and the wrong color to receive an EBT card.

      • dd121

Orwell certainly predicted it. He just couldn’t have known the magnitude.

      • Paleoconn

I wonder if ol’ George could ever imagine that certain people would be using his writings as an instruction manual.

      • One of the convenient things about going crazy is that one gets to make up one’s own words. The sad aspect to it is that once a fellow recovers, he misses all the fun he used to have.

    • The differences? In a communist regime, you only have to keep your mouth shut; no one actually hates you if you just keep quiet. Also a communist regime at least controls crime and demands that the poor must work and not be parasites. Finally, communist propaganda is not as effective as liberal propaganda. Liberalism is actually worse than communism.

      • dd121

Thank you, sir. I think that’s very insightful.

“Gypped.” Seriously? How many Gypsys live in the US, let alone are smart enough to get into U. Mich.?

    • Dave West

“How many Gypsys live in the US?”

Probably about 20 and TLC has already made 85 different shows about them!

      • LexiconD1

I don’t believe those people to be ‘real’ gypsies. They might have some ‘gypsy’ blood in them from long ago, but they don’t live the lifestyle. Those people on TLC are more in line with white trash.

      • milothefierce

Believe it or not, there’s a lot more than you think. They’re not necessarily the romanian gypsies that turn into werewolves, but clans of gypsies from other cultures. For example, there’s a large clan of irish gypsies just outside of N. Augusta, SC. At least 150 of them in the commune, they stay to themselves, and they are well known in the tri-state area for running dozens of scams — everything from repaving driveways with substandard materials to massive retail shoplifting schemes.

        • I not only don’t think the “Irish Travelers” are real Gypsies, but I don’t believe they’re really Irish, either. They’re just garbage.

          • milothefierce

Source: Basically grew up there, met some. And people that aren’t gypsies are offended by your statement of “real gypsies.” We prefer the term “gypsy deficient.”

      • Speedy Steve

20? There are that many crooked used car dealers on Lee Highway in Arlington Virginia. There are thousands of them in the DC area — enough that a Christian radio station broadcasts a show in Rromany (not Romanian) for them.

  • MekongDelta69

I make it my policy to use nothing but exclusive language in my comments on dopey sites and hope everybody gets ‘offended’ and ‘hurt.’ However, College Fix does NOT allow comments. (I tried earlier under two of their articles.)

  • Dave West

Yes students, never use these words while on open campus! Since there is a small off-chance that a “professional victim” feminist or person of color, with a white-male hating ax to grind, might hear you. This will cause the victim-obsessed person to become angry for the rest of the day. They will become so angry thinking about “white privilege” and that time someone asked them to touch their hair in middle school that they may not study enough for tomorrows test. They will then do badly on the test because you unleashed a powerful “psychological racist/sexist micro-agression” against them. Remember that your black college peers courageously risk their lives every time they step out of their dorm/apartment because of policemen and racist vigilantes looking to gun down successful black “scholars.” Also 2 + 2 = 436!

  • rebelcelt

The fact that we are white and do not need them offends them. The Liberals hate us and wan t to prove to themselves that they are the good whites. The Minorities will feign offense at the liberals then giggle at the foolish whites falling all over themselves to prove that they are not racist.

    • Speedy Steve

feign offense? Nah! They’ll just complain. It’s the only thing they’re good at. Liberalism must be made painful. One cossack with a whip at Sochi shut Pussy Riot up.

    • Spikeygrrl

They’re not smart enough to come up with a two-step plan.

  • superlloyd

What a crock! The negroes will still be able to invoke their witless, whites beez rayciss stereotypes and slobbery is what keeps the good black man down. Spare me from this one sided idiocy.

  • Luca

What about “honky, redneck, pecker wood, WASP and cracker?” [Sarcasm]

    • HE2

You beat me to it, Luca. Good stuff.
I like Kersey site commenter Zenster’s terms, pavement ape and porch monkey, too.
What about the ever popular ghetto term bandied about freely by the melanin enhanced, “nigga,” usually preceded by “my?”
Guess all are still okay at UM.
The topper for me is the college that has banned titles of Mrs, Ms, and Mr.
All names must be gender neutral to avoid offending those who suffer from Gender Identity Disorder.

  • IstvanIN

“crazy,” “insane,” “retarded,” “gay,” “tranny,” “gypped,” “illegal alien,” “fag,” “ghetto” and “raghead.”
OK, the boldface words are meant to be derogatory, I certainly do not support using derogatory terms as a matter of course, but why are the others banned?

    • Paleoconn

Even the so-called derogatory ones should not be banned.

    • What’s derogatory about ‘tranny’?? It’s just a diminutive, right? If we can’t say ‘raghead’ can we say ‘towelhead’? Seems descriptive enough.

      • Sick of it

Perhaps they would allow camel jockey.

        • Would “goat-raping pedophile” be sensitive enough? Our poster-child for Islamitardistan is of course Daesh, a.k.a. “ISIS”, which recently burned alive a downed Jordanian pilot and has even pacifist Japan howling for revenge.

          • Sick of it

At least he didn’t eat the guy…this time.

        • Born_In_The_Pineywoods

          Or Dune C**n

        • Or sand n***er?

      • awb

I put a lenco tranny in my dragster. Now that’s a TRANNY!

      • Bill Moore

        How about “Sand Ni99er”?

        Bill Moore

    • In my neck of the woods, a “tranny” is a vehicle transmission. I.e. “Your tranny is f****d and needs to be rebuilt. Shop around a bit so you don’t get raped crazy on the price.”

      • I feel violated just reading that. But in a good way, of course.

    • Kenner

‘Tranny’ has only recently been considered derogatory. Like in the last two years. Some militant black tranny threw a hissy fit over it in the media.

      • UncleSham

I thought it was a black tranny who enjoyed calling itself a tranny in public and the white libs got angry over it. “You can’t call yourself that, don’t you know that word oppresses you!”

    • GeneticsareDestiny

Crazy, insane, and retarded are considered ableist nowadays (which is basically like “racist,” except against disabled people). I have no idea why they’re banning gay, seeing as it is incredibly commonly used among both straights and gays as a non-offensive identifier for homosexuals.

Gypped is supposed to be derogatory towards the Roma (Gypsies) because it implies they steal/cheat people. Illegal alien is now offensive because it’s “racis” to remind illegals that they’re not here legally (or something). Ghetto is now considered to be an anti-black insult.

Note that this is all in the viewpoint of liberals, not necessarily in the viewpoint of society at large.

    • Reynardine

Didn’t RuPaul call himself a tranny lately and said it was ok to use?

      • IstvanIN

He is probably an oreo or something that the libs don’t like. Who knows, he may not even take himself that seriously, unlike the libs who make everything a tragedy.

  • milothefierce

This insanely retarded campaign had to have been pushed forward by some gay tranny-lovin’ illegal alien. That raghead fag probably lives in the ghetto… I feel so gypped out of my time spent reading this article that I want to die. (There, I think I covered all the bases.)

    • Sick of it

Please don’t be niggardly with words, express your negro fatigue in spades.

    • Ludwig

He doesn’t live in the ghetto, he lives in the White House.

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Words declared unacceptable through the campaign include “crazy,” “insane,” “retarded,” “gay,” “tranny,” “gypped,” “illegal alien,” “fag,” “ghetto” and “raghead.”

All of these words are needed to accurately describe the current PC reign of terror that has descended across the U.S. and the U of Michigan in particular.

    According to FIRE:

University of Michigan – Ann Arbor has been given the speech code rating Red. A red light university has at least one policy that both clearly and substantially restricts freedom of speech:

“Can individuals who engage in hateful speech be arrested or disciplined by the University?”

    It depends.

The University takes seriously its responsibility to appropriately balance its core values of protecting individual freedoms (e.g., freedom of speech… These values may sometimes be in conflict. Various University offices are responsible for determining whether hateful speech violates the University’s non-discrimination and unlawful harassment policies.

“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”

    ― George Orwell, 1984

I suggest U of M alums be made aware of this stifling of the First Amendment and adjust their donations accordingly.

    • Frank_DeScushin

I can’t decide if this censorship proposal is more gay or more retarded.

      • I’m going with “criminally insane”, “faggy” and “mas mucho ghetto”.

        • Now we see why their major cities have to be bailed out at everyone else’s expense. So they’ll have money for initiatives like this.

          • Taxpayers need an individual line-item veto. Programs like HUD’s Section-Eight would disappear overnight. Anyone with the word “diversity” in their job description would quickly be flipping burgers (and probably spitting on them).

          • I’ve been saying that since forever. People always object: ‘but what if people don’t want to pay for roads, or defense??’ Well then, they won’t have them, that’s what.

      • Bon, From the Land of Babble

        Both. Just like Obama.

        • Spikeygrrl

  • Words declared unacceptable through the campaign include “crazy,”

“ghetto” and “raghead.” Phrases such as “I want to die” and “that test
    raped me” are also verboten.

Aww crap, what am I supposed to say then? They just took away my entire vocabulary.

    • My own term “greaserito” does not appear to have made the list. There’s also “Afritard” and “drooling Bongonian rape-ape”. “Missing link” is likewise absent.

  • ejXinMI

Gotta wonder if their admittance process has (what they would consider) a few flaws.

  • Steve_in_Vermont

Can’t we just call a spade a spade?………..Oops. In my defense I didn’t see that on “the list”.

    • That was one of the phrases to which UC Santa Cruz objected when I was an undergrad there. Likewise “There’s a nip in the air.” It’s currently cold outside, but I have a Nip in my house, busy with her sewing machine. Does that count?

      This orchestrated hypersensitivity is faggy.

  • JohnEngelman

Will I still be allowed to call those of African descent “Negroes,” or will I be required to call them African Americans?

What about “Oriental?” Is that forbidden too?

    • They rebrand themselves every generation, so why bother? In my own case, I’m going with “Cheap-arsed Scotsman, Drunk Irishman and Quarter-breed Blanket-Head”. I hit quite a few bases with this one.

      • Ella

Sorry Michael, the “frugal” Scot is true based on family or clan experience.

        • Charles Martel

          Drunk Irishman at my house.

    • DonReynolds

I cannot be required to call them a damn thing. If they do not like Negro, I have about a dozen other terms we can use…..freely. But no, the ONLY African Americans are those persons born in one of the 53 African countries, who later came to the USA and were naturalized. There are no other African Americans.

    • Spikeygrrl

Apparently, yes. I understand the reasoning behind scrapping “Oriental,” but I don’t understand it for Negro/negroid. That is the correct scientific term for Blacks, just as Caucasian/caucasoid is for Whites. Asians got the short end of the stick yet again: their scientific designation is Mongol/mongoloid…and that IS YT’s fault for calling Down Syndrome kids “Mongoloid idiots” for so long. IIRC that was because many of them have slanty eyes.

      • John Smith

I don’t understand the “Oriental” thing, as “Asian” includes too many dissimilar groups to be descriptive.

      • JohnEngelman

I will keep on calling Orientals Orientals, and Negroes Negroes. Calling them Asians and African Americans feels like a concession to political correctness.

        • Spikeygrrl

“Oriental” was coined as the antithesis of “Occidental” (= “the West”). To understand how educated Asians feel about that, imagine growing up and then living your adult life being referred to — and filling out forms as — “Notblack.”

But I’m in complete agreement with you re: “African American.” I read a couple of years back about some journalist or public intellectual (whose identity I have forgotten — so sorry!) who kept referring to Negroes LIVING IN AFRICA as “African Americans.” Now that’s what I call a pernicious mental habit!

          • Charles Martel

I recall students at Stanford rebelling against courses on Western Civilization. They were outraged that a course in Renaissance painting did not include African Americans as subjects until someone pointed out that America didn’t exist at the time!

  • LHathaway

Watch what you say and keep it down . . . it makes it easier to hear to our anti-white hatred and propaganda.

  • I noticed the terms “inclusive” and “communities” in the article. To a rational mind, the creation of different communities is expressly not inclusive. Nor is it particularly safe, once racial, ethnic and religious rivalries are stirred by career bureaucrats (i.e. tax-parasites).

  • AFlaVet

And we think that “Newspeak” was a fiction in a book namedx 1984?
    Obviously…It’s here for good.

  • DonReynolds

There is NOTHING I would call “safe, inclusive, or respectful” about a police state.

This is the soft version of totalitarianism. They may not shoot you by a firing squad, but you will not attend any university they control…..or speak in the public square…..or display a sign or pass out a flyer.

We have had that same crap in the South for many years.

  • DonReynolds

Never let ANYONE decide what you can say or what you cannot say.
It is our family tradition and in a few short minutes….it can be my religion.

  • LS Wight

The critical theory and Marxist thought police need to die!

How many fingers am I holding up? “Four” Wrong answer. Two plus two is whatever we say it is.

If any of you are interested in knowing more about Kidada Malloy — the implementer of this goofy program: Read on.
You guessed right, she could be 0bama’s love child.

And why is it not OK to use gyp and jew, but welch is perfectly acceptable? Am I catching a whiff of ye olde racialism?

  • Caucasoid88

This campaign is crazy. We now have ghetto blacks and illegal aliens dictating the terms of the majority. Students should feel gypped. It’s absolutely insane and as the kids say, retarded, that college kids won’t be able to freely use words such as fag when ragheads would kill gays and trannies at the drop of a hat. I want to die. Western civilization has been officially raped.

    That was fun.

    • Cindy

What I’m wondering is what will the “Inclusive Language Campaign” have on their list next year? 2 years from now? 3 years from now?
Do libtards not see the corner they paint themselves in to?

  • Ella

I would use “gypped” often dealing with text book mark-ups, building and parking fees, of course, abhorrent tuition hikes and the Leftist reprehensible and insane lectures. Okay, I went to college and got raped by the system.

  • Americaandthewestshouldbewhite

I guess under the libs free speech is DEAD

  • John Smith

I kinda agree with this, in that students should watch what they say, in public and print, so as to avoid being labeled by the PC thought police and this helps remind them they’re under surveillance. What they think, however, should remain unchanged, perhaps even strengthened by the assault on free expression.

  • I actually agree with this. (Wait, let me explain, fellow posters!) I would spend more than that to advise all the White kids for their own safety to be careful around blacks. Advise them, blacks are violent; they hate you; avoid them as much as possible; and never, EVER make friends with them! Yes, absolutely watch what you say around them. They will use it against you all the time. “When around blacks, never relax.” See? We Amreners CAN reach agreement with liberals after all.
