UC Berkeley Student Government Bans Term ‘Illegal Immigrant’

Jennifer Kabbany, The College Fix, November 8, 2013

The UC Berkeley student government has banned the term “illegal immigrant” from its discourse, deeming the phrase racist, offensive, unfair and derogatory.

In a unanimous vote, student senators passed a resolution that stated the word “illegal” is “racially charged,” “dehumanizes” people, and contributes to “punitive and discriminatory actions aimed primarily at immigrants and communities of color.”

The “resolution in support of drop the I-word campaign” was approved 18 to 0 with one abstention on Oct. 30, according to a copy of the meeting’s minutes obtained by The College Fix.

There are an estimated 900 students in the country illegally who are currently enrolled in the 10-campus, University of California system, according to UC officials. {snip}

“The ‘I’ word is legally inaccurate since being out of status is a civil rather than criminal infraction,” states the resolution, which notes some journalists have stopped using the term.

“No human being is illegal,” the resolution continues. “ ‘Foreign nationals,’ ‘undocumented immigrants,’ ‘immigrants without papers’ and ‘immigrants seeking status’ are examples of terms we can use that do not dehumanize people.”

The resolution also calls for administrators and faculty to attend an “UndocuAlly training workshop.”

The lone abstention came from student Sen. Solomon Nwoche.

Nwoche said while he sympathized with the situation, he thinks the resolution does not accomplish anything substantial. He added he was disappointed in how a student who spoke against the resolution at an earlier meeting was treated by student senators, who laughed or had their backs turned when the lone protestor addressed the dais.

Remember this when some UC Berkeley graduate comes looking for a job at your place of employment.

    • Alexandra1973

We can still use the term “illegal alien” I take it?

      • rowingfool

“No human being is illegal,” the resolution continues. What a red herring! No one claims that a “human being is illegal”. The phrase under consideration is “illegal immigrant”. It’s their immigration status that is illegal, not their humanity.

        • Criminal parasite invaders?

        • Andy

It seems like they’re being willfully stupid. If I say that someone is a “bad writer”, for example, no one thinks I’m saying they’re “bad” as a person. Clearly it refers to their writing skills.

      • bilderbuster

I know I will continue using it even more often than I currently do from now on.

  • Puggg

student senators passed a resolution that stated the word “illegal” is “racially charged,”

On the face of it, no. Illegal simply means not legal.

    • Pro_Whitey

True. There are mick illegals (my cousin did it for a while), and they should go back, too.

      • bilderbuster

They’re White so they get deported.

    • Jefferson

The vast majority of Illegal Immigrants on this country are Nonwhite. When the average American thinks of an Illegal Immigrant, they do not think of a Scotsman in a quilt for example. They think of Squat Monster Maria with her 8 kids.

So yes the term Illegal has become a racial term in America. The term Illegal in The United States has become synonymous with NOT WHITE.

      • Pro_Whitey

Actually, we still don’t concede it, because we apply the term to all illegals. In Boston people are in high dudgeon about an illegal Polish immigrant who “allegedly” tortured a puppy to the point where it had to be put to sleep. And like I said, there are the micks. Rules are rules, and the U.S. ought to be exercising it prerogative to control its borders and who can come in and stay. I will still use the term.
That said, you are correct that most of the illegals are the “squat monsters”.

        • Jefferson

I live in California where there is no epidemic of Illegal Immigrants from Poland and Ireland. We do however have an epidemic of Mexican and Central American Illegal Immigrants.

Are most Illegal Immigrants in Boston actually of Caucasian stock ?

          • Pro_Whitey

I wouldn’t know, but I do know there have been significant number of mick illegals there, and I heard of the Polish puppy torture guy. Oh yeah and there’s the Tsarnaevs, who bombed the Boston Marathon, who technically were not illegal unless you count their fraudulent asylum claims against them. Still, I am sure Boston has nothing on California. That’s a bleepin’ disaster.

  • dd121

They can ban the term, I’d like to ban the immigrants.

  • This is all nothing more than exotic noisemakers who are reacting to Janet Napolitano becoming President of the UC system; they’re dumb enough to believe Obama’s propaganda that he and his administration actually deported illegal aliens.

    • Greg Thomas

No doubt Napolitano is glowing with pride at this moment. And to think this traitor was once in charge of enforcing this nation’s immigration laws and keeping out the squat monsters she so dearly advocates for.

  • Does this mean we should call them “criminal alien invaders” instead?

    • Spartacus

How about “cockroaches” ? Seems fairly accurate, what with them coming out of the holes in the walls…

    • GeneticsareDestiny

These are the type of people who’d probably call the police to report an explosion of racism on campus if you said that in front of them. They can’t even deal with the term “alien” used to describe non-Americans because it’s (and I quote from actual liberals I’ve known) “alienating”.

Illegal alien, alien invader, illegal alien invader, illegal border jumper, criminal alien invader, etc. all sound good to me though.

      • We could also just call them “Aliens”. They grab onto their hosts and smother them, force their parasitical offspring into these hosts, and finally kill them, just like in the horror movie.

  • IstvanIN

And what about freedom of speech? Oh yes, that is such an old fashioned, irrelevant white idea.

    • Jefferson

Freedom of speech has always been a Western concept.

  • Lewis33

The only way these kids could save themselves now is if they start firebombing.

  • OhWow

I agree. Illegal Immigrant is too kind a term for the destruction they have done here.

  • Magician

There is nothing inappropriate about the phrase “illegal immigrant”. Are we going to stop using the term “murderer” too because the term “murderer” might offend murderers who commit murders to take away innocent people’s lives?

  • DailyKenn

A roseta by any other name is still a roseta

  • mobilebay

We could alway haul out the old moniker …those who get damp wading across the Rio Grande

    • bilderbuster

      And revive Operation Wetback.

  • Spartacus

    “…In a unanimous vote…”

You can see how these guys appreciate diversity…

    • Homo_Occidentalis

      They are well trained Goyim.

  • Extropico

Employers should ban the reception of resumes with UC Berkelely on it since that connotes white privilege, intelligence privilege and work ethic privilege. What pompous, pretentious ingrates who so benefit from the gates and fences and standards in this nation.

  • Homo_Occidentalis

UC Berkley is a state-funded university. This is a blatant violation of the first amendment rights of the students and faculty. If these leftists want to go off an found St. Marx’s Progressivist Indoctrinarial College of Berkley as a private institution of higher learning on their own dime, then they can restrict free speech all they want. The taxpayers of California should demand that their rights be respected or that funding be withheld. This should be viewed as an even greater affront to civil rights than segregated state facilities.

    • bilderbuster

I believe it should be Rabbi Marx.

  • ViktorNN

Speech control is thought control. The standard lefty playbook.

It isn’t so much that “illegal” is dehumanizing – it’s that “undocumented” sounds a lot less threatening, and more warm and fuzzy.

“Why, these people just don’t have documents, that’s all!”

“Quick, if we just get them some documents, then we can solve this terrible injustice of them not having documents once and for all.”

“Whew, at last we solved the problem of these people not having documents.”

They want us to enter some lala land where words don’t mean anything close to the situation they’re meant to describe. It reminds me of schizophrenic people I’ve known.

  • NM156

When the Big One lays waste to the Bay Area, I will laugh.

  • WR_the_realist

Okay, we get it, “illegal immigrant” is offensive and inhumane.

From now on I’ll just call them wetbacks.

    • Brian

What about the ones who aren’t latino– Haitians or Iraqis and such? I like ‘immivader’.

      • WR_the_realist

Well, there’s always the more generic term — undocumented Democrat.

  • I wore my kilt and sword on my wedding day, at Garden of the Gods. Nothing is worn under the kilt; everything is in perfect working order.

  • bilderbuster

Before they crossed the border most were undocumented, unemployed Mexicans.

  • bilderbuster

    And New York.
The difference is the Irish can & do assimilate.
The main illegals in both cities are the usual suspects though.

  • Magician

    ““No human being is illegal,””

Of course no person is biologically “illegal” but things they do, can be illegal and the term “illegal” in the phrase “illegal alien” means the way they are in a certain place is illegal

Why so scared of offending people

    • Alexandra1973

I think their reasoning is they’re human, ergo they have the right to go where they please.

      Never mind about rules.

  • It is sad to see such nonsense so rife in what is supposed to be an education environment. That the dissenter was laughed at is equally disturbing, as it shows the utter tyranny at hand – plus the shocking inability of people to actually think critically about what they are doing.

‘No human being is illegal’…okay…….but where there are borders, boundaries, citizenship, immigration rules, they can be living in a country at contrary measures to these laws and regulations, therefore they ARE illegally there. They are breaking immigration law.

They are rendering the citizenship of everybody else null and void, because it advocates no identities and no boundaries and no defined citizenship other than “global citizens”. This is what it is really all about, universalism – no borders and no distinctions.

They foolishly claim it is “racist”……well, what “race” is an illegal immigrant? They could, in fact, be white and there without due process. There is no logic or foundation to their argument, other than that blacks and Hispanics are *greater* immigration law breakers!

I wonder if “illegal alien” would be deemed offensive to interplanetary guests?

The UC Berkeley student government – putting the Universe into University.

  • Pro_Whitey

Israeli newspapers use a term that translates to “infiltrators” when describing their illegal immigrants. That would work, too.

  • Greg Thomas

I will NEVER stop calling them illegal invaders!

  • saxonsun

I live in Manhattan. And there are tons of illegal Irish in the Bronx and Long Island. The IRA used to collect money in the Bronx.

What next? Banning the term “Obamacare”?

  • Andy

    Good on the lone protester.
