Claire Z. Cardona, Dallas News, November 11, 2015

The man who police say ran over an off-duty officer before being shot by police is in the country illegally and had been deported three times, immigration officials said.

Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios, 29, is out of the hospital and is being held in the Dallas County jail. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and is being detained on an immigration hold.

Police said Sr. Corporal Ed Lujan suffered numerous broken bones and a lacerated scalp after Gonzalez-Rios ran over him twice outside the Kalua Discotheque in the 2400 block of W. Northwest Highway. Lujan was in uniform, working an off-duty job at the nightclub.

That prompted the two other officers, Sgt. Shannon Browning and Sr. Corporal Antonio Barrientos, to fire at Gonzalez-Rios, wounding him, police said. {snip}

Police say Gonzalez-Rios was escorted out of the night club by employees and asked to leave the premises. He got into his SUV and backed into one officer and then drove forward over a curb, running “completely over” Lujan, police said. Witnesses said he then backed over Lujan. The other officer was not injured.
