The Doctrine of Academic Freedom

Sandra Y.L. Korn, The Crimson, February 17, 2014

In July 1971, Harvard psychology professor Richard J. Herrnstein penned an article for Atlantic Monthly titled “I.Q.” in which he endorsed the theories of UC Berkeley psychologist Arthur Jensen, who had claimed that intelligence is almost entirely hereditary and varies by race. Herrnstein further argued that because intelligence was hereditary, social programs intended to establish a more egalitarian society were futile—he wrote that “social standing [is] based to some extent on inherited differences among people.”

When he returned to campus for fall semester 1971, Herrnstein was met by angry student activists. Harvard-Radcliffe Students for a Democratic Society protested his introductory psychology class with a bullhorn and leaflets. They tied up Herrnstein’s lectures with pointed questions about scientific racism. SDS even called for Harvard to fire Herrnstein, along with another of his colleagues, sociologist Christopher Jencks.

{snip}

Harvard’s deans were also unhappy. They expressed concerns about student activists’ “interference with the academic freedom and right to speak of a member of the Harvard faculty.” Did SDS activists at Harvard infringe on Herrnstein’s academic freedom? The answer might be that yes, they did—but that’s not the most important question to ask. Student and faculty obsession with the doctrine of “academic freedom” often seems to bump against something I think much more important: academic justice.

In its oft-cited Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, the American Association of University Professors declares that “Teachers are entitled to full freedom in research and in the publication of the results.” In principle, this policy seems sound: It would not do for academics to have their research restricted by the political whims of the moment.

Yet the liberal obsession with “academic freedom” seems a bit misplaced to me. After all, no one ever has “full freedom” in research and publication. Which research proposals receive funding and what papers are accepted for publication are always contingent on political priorities. The words used to articulate a research question can have implications for its outcome. No academic question is ever “free” from political realities. If our university community opposes racism, sexism, and heterosexism, why should we put up with research that counters our goals simply in the name of “academic freedom”?

Instead, I would like to propose a more rigorous standard: one of “academic justice.” When an academic community observes research promoting or justifying oppression, it should ensure that this research does not continue.

The power to enforce academic justice comes from students, faculty, and workers organizing together to make our universities look as we want them to do. Two years ago, when former summer school instructor Subramanian Swamy published hateful commentary about Muslims in India, the Harvard community organized to ensure that he would not return to teach on campus. I consider that sort of organizing both appropriate and commendable. Perhaps it should even be applied more broadly. {snip}

{snip}

It is tempting to decry frustrating restrictions on academic research as violations of academic freedom. Yet I would encourage student and worker organizers to instead use a framework of justice. After all, if we give up our obsessive reliance on the doctrine of academic freedom, we can consider more thoughtfully what is just.

The more I’m exposed to Harvard the less I’m impressed. Honestly if I were hiring and an applicant came in with a resume noting Ivy League credentials it would be a negative.

    • r j p

It is nearly impossible to flunk out of Harvard.
So if you just get accepted and show up for class, you get a degree.

      • Kenner

        I thought that was Howard…

        • r j p

Well Howard too, but that is like a black community college.

        • Fathercoughlin

At Harvard you come in smart, & spend four years getting dumb. At HOWARD, you come in—well do you recall the name of that Jim Carrey movie with Jeff Daniels? That.

    • john miles

Yes, Harvard would be a negative for me too, but sadly that is the standard most employers want and it is really quite scary. After all this isn’t Cuba—-yet.

  • ncpride

Thank goodness this loony liberal got slapped around pretty good in the comments section. People like this woman are very, very dangerous.

    • http://www.ambrosekane.com/ bluffcreek1967

You’re right, these are the truly dangerous people in the world since they help to shape future societal policies, the very ones that threaten our freedom to speak the truth on matters of race.

“When an academic community observes research promoting or justifying oppression, it should ensure that this research does not continue.”

This is a misrepresentation of Hernstein’s work and is the same fallacy we saw in an article posted on Amren yesterday regarding “scientific racism”. Liberals see any science that shows minorities having lower group intelligence as “research promoting or justifying oppression”. How is Hernstein promoting or justifying oppression? If anything, the lie that black people trail others solely due to alleged oppression promotes and justifies the oppression of whites to futilely try to level the playing field.

    • David Ashton

Actually her demand was even more indefensibly exorbitant: “research that counters our goals”.

      • Nancy Thomas

Did she study under Franz Boas?

        • Martel

Everybody has studied “under” Franz Boas by now.

        • David Ashton

Boas died of a stroke in December1942 immediately after denouncing “racism” at a faculty dinner, so it is unlikely.

          • Young Werther

She certainly studied under those he influenced.

          • Nancy Thomas

He and his slimy offspring totally dominate anthropology, lie that whites are prone to war, lie that other cultures are peaceful, lie that there is nothing good about European culture and that we’re evil racists, blahblah,
These people are rotten Bolsheviks and they should be deported.

          • Nancy Thomas

Whew. C’mon guys, my comment was tongue in cheek. Boas employed the same rules regarding “scholarship” veiled as propaganda. Basic Frankfurt School stuff used by every marxist proponent, from Boas to Adorno to Marcuse to Freud to Gould, etc., liars all. Nearly all of the intellectual efforts coming from this tribe amounts to nothing more than ethnic warfare against Christians of European descent.

“academic justice.” When an academic community observes research

    does not continue.

Exactly how does one per-determine the social outcome, good or bad, of any research?

Let’s say it’s true that blacks are less intelligent than whites and Asians but we dismiss the research because of the implications. What does this mean to social programs? Do we spend billions of dollars and thousands of man-hours on programs that can’t work just to make people feel better?

    • bubo

Do we spend billions of dollars and thousands of man-hours on programs that can’t work just to make people feel better?

Yep. Everyone knows that the social programs meant to alleviate poverty actually causes it. Everyone knows that Head Start is a complete waste of money and has been proven so in several studies. Everyone knows that Affirmative Action is destroying our country’s ability to compete in the world market, yet we still do all of it. It’s insane.

      • So CAL Snowman

By everyone you mean like 2% of White people and maybe a few Asians right?

        • LHathaway

well, the more the lefties ‘help’ the worse things get, but one thing is certain. They’re going to redouble the effort.

      • Nancy Thomas

Everything is whitey’s fault. This is their default position.

      • Fathercoughlin

Obama is spending millions to help “young minority men” succeed. they will go to a program every day for several months and get paid to show up–even if they sometimes dont. At the end of the program they will…go right back to the hood and smoke some weed.

    • WR_the_realist

Of course that’s exactly what they do. And when it doesn’t work, that just means we haven’t spent enough time or money on it.

“the liberal obsession with “academic freedom”

The author must mean liberal in the classical sense because, last I checked, today’s Liberals are the people most apt to curtail academic freedom.

    • Truthseeker

True classical liberals, who value freedoms and liberties, are a dying breed. They’ve been replaced with “progressives,” people who make no pretense of respecting anyone’s freedom. To them, anything that hasn’t been done before and creates the appearance of some form of “equality” is “progress” that must be pursued with a religious fervor. There’s no room for argument or intellectual exploration, there’s only their agenda, and heaven help anyone who stands in its way.

      • Nancy Thomas

Face it, they are Marxist scumbags and their goal is the total destruction of the western world.

  • Truthseeker

I can translate this Cultural Marxist hogwash in one sentence: “We should not be interested in discovering the truth, we should be striving for across-the-board equality, regardless of how much dishonesty or heavy-handed suppression it requires.”

  • David Ashton

As an English reader, I would appreciate an explanation of what is meant by a “sexuality concentrator”?

    • tlk244182

I think it means she’s a history major, concentrating [her academic focus] on women, gender, and sexuality. In other words, she’s with the Ministry of Truth.

      • David Ashton

She needs to concentrate a bit harder.

        • Fathercoughlin

If I was making love to her–after seing her picture–I would have to concentrate like a madman on images of attractive women to keep from throwing up.

I can’t describe in words the utter contempt in which I hold Sandra Y. L. Korn, the author. If I wrote it, it would be deleted by the mods. A formerly first-rate university is now giving degrees to fifth-rate minds, so long as their’s a vagina or dark skin attached. Dispicable.

    • http://countenance.wordpress.com/ Question Diversity

Don’t worry. Her precious degree in womyn’s studies she’s about to earn will be useless in the real world, so her career track could take her in one of two paths:

      1. Hooking up with Pajama Boy to do left wing activism on their iPads while in their under-roos win either his parents’ basement or her parents’ basement

      Or

      2. “Would you like fries with that?”

Either way, with lots and lots and lots of student loan debt.

      • bigone4u

Here’s a pic of the young lady, the most flattering one I could find. No wonder she is such a feminazi radical–the boys have never asked HER out on a date on Saturday night. It’s rather difficult to tell she’s female, isn’t it?

        • The Final Solution

She obviously bats for the other team.

They probably keep her in the dugout, hidden from view.

          • David Ashton

            And “bats” (adjective, colloquial)?
There may be TWO teams of “others” here, but no-one can help how they are born.

          • Brian

            ‘bats’ = verb, baseball reference.

          • bigone4u

Camille Paglia and Michael Musto, both prominent homosexuals, state their sexual orientation was a choice. I believe it is for some people, but not for all. Many lesbians make that choice to deny men their bodies because they have “issues” with men.

          • Pelagian

I don’t claim to be a quantum mechanics expert, but the two-stage model of free will always made sense to me in relation to the homosexuals I have met and whether they are choosing it or not:

A two-stage model of free will separates the free stage from the will stage.

In the first stage, alternative possibilities for thought and action are generated, in part indeterministically.
In the second stage, an adequately determined will evaluates the options that have been developed.

If, on deliberation, one option for action seems best, it is selected and chosen. If no option seems good enough, and time permitting, the process can return to the further generation of alternative possibilities (“second thoughts”) before a final decision.

A two-stage model can explain how an agent could choose to do otherwise in exactly the same circumstances that preceded the first stage of the overall free will process.

The joke will be on her. I know many Jewish women like her (I am Jewish myself). They get these degrees like womens studies, public university administration, etc. The only jobs for people with those degrees are at government-funded entities, which only want to hire blacks. The joke is on her when she graduates because she’s competing for these non-jobs with hordes of blacks, Hispanics, and others who are ahead of whites.

She will also flunk out at dating, but will wake up at age 40 and realize she has an urge to have children, but no one will want to date her at that time. I know so many women like that.

        • http://countenance.wordpress.com/ Question Diversity

And at that point, she’ll really get involved in the feminist movement hot and heavy.

I always thought third wave feminism was basically a front for lesbian man-haters. And maybe some of that is true. But Steve Sailer’s theory, which looks more and more true the more I look, is that there’s a big element in it that consists of Jewish women upset that a lot of Jewish men aren’t marrying Jewish women.

And that would explain the media and their literary review sections have so much contempt for The Triple Package by Amy Chua. Not because of anything the book has to say, but because who the author is married to, a Jewish man. Who disproportionately does literary review for major MSM outlets? Jewish women.

          • David Ashton

“Sappho is a right[or Left]-on Woman” – the wimmin/wyomin’s movement, with all its sectarian varieties, had lesbianism as its underlying driving force, but also many of its leading lights have been of the Hebraic Persuasion. Outsider minorities want to feel more at home in society, and seek to remould it accordingly. There is no sociological mystery about this, and even Abe Foxman can grasp it in his welcome “retirement”.

          • LHathaway

I read a negative review of Amy Chua’s new book in Time magainze. It was done by an women who immigrated from India. I was actually going to write a letter to the editor about the story but Time no longer prints readers comments or letters. Basically, the article was implying that permissive child rearing methods work best, and that nothing needs to change in free-wheeling American society. It also attempted to link those who say ‘culture matters’ with racism and racists. In my letter I was going to note something like, it may be true those who fret about culture may be closet racists but it’s also true that their modern sensitive opponents now use the word ‘redneck’ a racial slur, one who’s nearest corollary is the ‘n word’ in an effort to show everyone else how enlightened they are.

She uses the word ‘redneck’ in her article condemning those who are insensitive.

        • The Final Solution

Her family was probably one of those that escaped to the US from Europe during WW2. They probably hid in the caves in the Ukraine where they lamented that there were no banks and no money. People like this come from wealthy families so they can study women’s studies and other useless crap at their leisure. When she graduates she won’t have any trouble because her parents likely own a bank or NPR or some holocaust museum. She’ll start her first job as CEO.

        • Who Me?

[She] “will wake up at age 40 and realize she has an urge to have children…”

And then she, along with her 3rd “life partner”, (also female) will decide to adopt one or two African “fashion accessories”, straight from the “muddalan”.

  • WR_the_realist

If our university community opposes racism, sexism, and heterosexism, why should we put up with research that counters our goals simply in the name of “academic freedom”?

    – Sandra Y.L. Korn, The Crimson, February 17, 2014

In his essay “The Inequality Taboo,” Charles Murray explained why, “specific policies based on premises that conflict with scientific truths about human beings tend not to work. Often they do harm.”

There should never be any taboos and sanctions against telling the truth. Even falsehoods should be exposed in the free market of facts and opinions, rather than suppressed.

History of science, technology, tools, machines, ship building is fascinating. Henry Ford 1 proposed that the schools teach that kind of history instead of concentrating on Kings and Queens and wars. About the only machine historians bother to explain how it worked was the cotton gin. The McCormick reaper is mentioned but absolutely nothing about it worked, not even pictures.

There is a fascinating book “The Most Powerful Idea in the World” about science, technology, invention and related topics. It explains how it happened that the Industrial Revolution began in a small island nation off the coast of Europe rather than anywhere else on Earth.

Exactly. This progressive’s argument for “academic justice” can be traced back to Herbert Marcuse’s principle of “repressive tolerance”. He advocated showing tolerance for supposedly marginalized leftist perspectives, but intolerance for all right-wing policies and opinions. Our modern western governments and academia have learned much from the writings of Marcuse.

So in other words… She’s a nobody with no real work skills and who would starve to death if the non-Eskimos stop throwing her a bone.

    • Romulus

Judging by her picture, she almost certainly IS a non eskimo!

What a wonderful dream realized it would be if the west was free of non eskimos and their pets. Her article is more of what america can expect in the educational systems as our majority diminishes even further.

For those that havent already read the article on american thinker about connecticuts trial GUN REGISTRY LAW. It is the testing ground to set precedent to knock down the rest of the states leading to disarmament. The exact same strategy has been employed as it pertains to HOMOsexuals. Pass laws in one state( SCOTUS APPROVED) then knock down all the other ones
Hopefully, the coonecticut state troopers will attempt to arrest >68,000 people.
That might be the catalyst for the coming s**tstorm.

    • Romulus

      I will attempt another reply.
She is obviously a non Eskimo, so there hardly seems to be the need to explain any further.
This should be of no surprise to anyone, especially we realists.
The sheer stupidity of this fool, at one time, would have made me laugh ,yet we all know where our educational system is headed the more our majority is replaced.

This article comes on the heels of the very real attempt in Connecticut at a state wide GUN REGISTRY LAW. Let’s see if they can enforce it. In any case, the goal is apparent. Every institution will be used to smash traditional America.
Connecticut is a test run, as we all know registries have always been used as a list for consfication. Just like Canada ,Australia. Britain used the excuse of a mass shooting as well, that occurred in Scotland years ago.
Be ever vigilant. The same tactic has been used to knock down each of the states that bans homosexual pairings. Legalize in one state set up for trial by SCOTUS, then railroad the rest of the states.

“Did SDS activists at Harvard infringe on Herrnstein’s academic freedom? The answer might be that yes, they did—but that’s not the most important question to ask.”

Right the most important question to ask is whether Herrnstein was right in stating in 1971 that social programs intended to establish a more egalitarian society were futile. I think by 2014 we have our answer.

    • JohnEngelman

Recently I have read two articles in The New York Times that said that during the past generation SAT scores of the children of rich parents have risen significantly. That is the confirmation of what Professor Herrnstein wrote in his 1971 essay.

  • LHathaway

“Two years ago, when former summer school instructor Subramanian Swamy published hateful commentary about Muslims in India”

One man’s activism against hate is for another man ‘hatred’, it would seem, and shouldn’t be tolerated. Some groups are more equal than others. At my college, where I’m returning after 20 some years away, they proudly boast that women teachers offer women students more help than do male teachers and note that the overall learning experience is hostile to women. Universities are blatently hostile to men. Textbooks on sociology cover gender while only discussing one gender, other than to infer all ‘diffulties’ and ‘oppressions’ befalling women are cause by men. Other than than, the male gender is not included in discussion of gender. Unversities were hostile or ambivalent to men’s issues 20 years ago when I was a student, and likely 20 years before that yet 60 years laters students are all learning that universities are hostile to women.

    • bubo

Swamy was telling the truth. Uncomfortable truths must never see the light of day in academia.

The Jewish publications are always going on and on about anti semites and their stereotyping of Jews. Ms. Korn is the epitome of lefty Jewish women.
I don’t think her Grandparents came after WW2. Her last name may be German, but like most Jewish leftists I’ll bet her Russian G G Grandparents were commie revolutionaries who had to flee Russian in 1900 after bravely bombing the local train station. They met up with Julius Hammer etc in New York and were founding members of the communist party. At least she’s better looking than Emma Goldman. I bet her Grandparents met at one of those Freedom Rides during the sixties.

She still won’t be a race realist though even after a few assaults by her students.
Sometimes I have little fantasies about what I would like to do to liberals. Expressing what I would like to do to affirmative action Judges is illegal. But I will write my fantasy about what I would like to do to Ms. Korn.
Time travel her to Manhattanville, Sarah Lawrence, Sweetbriar or Sophie Newcomb in 1950.
I’d provide her with a proper wardrobe of prom dresses, dyed to match skirts and sweaters, long full print skirts with crisply ironed blouses and all the accoutrements of a well dressed college girl (not womyn) back in the bad old days. I think they had to still wear heels, hose and dresses to dinner in the dorms in those days.

Do our kids need to attend university these days? Surely they can achieve the same level of knowledge via distance learning and the internet. As long as self discipline (and parental encouragement) are properly applied, all they would need to do is turn up for examinations in which they would likely trump the performance of those university-resident students who need their hands held for three years while their brains are washed.

  • Pelagian

She is not TOTALLY wrong. Academic freedom is not an absolute, and indeed total academic freedom is an impossibility. There’s always got to be somebody’s dime that pays for it. And decisions get made based on that dime. That’s why I think the Right is chasing its tail with this libertarian/tea party approach. It’s not logically sustainable in the long term. Better to throw your lot in with Catholicism, it’s been the only bulwark against anarchy for centuries.

    • http://countenance.wordpress.com/ Question Diversity

And that’s not what she’s talking about. What she wants is to censor race science for the sake of the religion-cult of racial equality.

“Throw your lot in with Catholicism.” But certainly not this anti-white no borders Pope.

      • Pelagian

Yes, the Church is hobbling on one leg. But why is it so? Because it’s been under a very sophisticated attack for at least four centuries. Why has it been attacked? Because our enemies *know* it’s the only bulwark.

So what is needed now is for people to find their spirituality, locate the Truth, and flood into the Catholic church and rally around Her. Staying away from the Church, only keeps us scattered and dispersed, our strength vitiated.

You mean “anecdotes are anecdotes”. The facts are that the Catholic Church opposes racial utopianism, always has and always will, and can’t change that opinion without affecting the indefectability of the church. And Francis knows that. How many worldwide institutions that believe in salvation by something other than punishing whitey do you have in your hip pocket there?

On the concept of justice trumping truth, how can there be a perceiving injustice to be righted, if truth, or at least debates on what could be truthful are not used as the barometer to define whether there’s been an injustice or not.

  • Who Me?

    This says it all

    From Captain Capitalism, 2-20-14:

Sandra Y.L. Korn – Another Mindless Adult-Child Nazi

I’ve decided to start recording individuals, especially the youngin’s of college age who, despite being in college and presumably really smart, advocate eliminating the freedom of speech. Not because they are against the freedom of speech, but because they’re so stupid and so ignorant and (above all else) so brainwashed they are incapable of understanding what the first amendment means.

Sandra Y.L. Korn is such a person.

Naturally she is a worthless studies major, majoring in women’s studies. Also she has never had a real job working at student newspapers he entire career. Finally, she is not pretty. She’s not a dog either, but certainly a 4-5. This is germane to the topic because of my theories about why ugly people tend to be liberal. In short because being attractive takes effort (working out, eating right) AND takes selflessness (you care about how you look primarily for other people’s benefit.

So three cheers for another waste of human life brought up by parents and an education system that failed to instill in her the basics about human rights, free speech and other vital concepts this country and our livelihood is based on.

Not true. Jews are insanely overrepresented, while whites are insanely underrepresented. And the Jewish claim of high intelligence is not the reason. Whites, because of a much higher population, have far more high IQ people. Whites face discrimination at all of the elite schools. Jews dominate due to money and connections and tweaking the system against whites. I recall a study on this very topic and it got quite a bit of attention.

FCC workers are government workers by law only minorities and anti American, anti White, Marxist and or gay Whites may work for the government. So I can imagine what these monitors will do.

The national news rooms already self censor. Commissars will be redundant there. But think of these as great make-work programs for Ivy League scholars that made poor major choices.
Local news broadcasts that report local crime will need watching though. The terms “teens” and “youth” will soon be banned as racist as they will be seen as the new “dog whistle”. Reporting of black crime will probably have to be abandoned altogether. Commissars will have to be on hand to oversee what stories need to be ignored.
