India’s Unfair Obsession with Lighter Skin

Monisha Rajesh, The Guardian, August 14, 2013

“You look green!” said a friend. “Are you ill?” asked another. Last year, a respected Indian newspaper published a photograph of me online which had been lightened so drastically by the art director’s magic wand that I called the editor to complain and he apologised and replaced it with the original. The art director had thought he was doing me a favour by whitening my skin.

India‘s obsession with fair skin is well documented: in 1978, Unilever launched Fair & Lovely cream, which has subsequently spawned numerous whitening face cleansers, shower gels and even vaginal washes that claim to lighten the surrounding skin. In 2010, India’s whitening-cream market was worth $432m, according to a report by market researchers ACNielsen, and was growing at 18% per year. Last year, Indians reportedly consumed 233 tonnes of skin-whitening products, spending more money on them than on Coca-Cola.

Cricket players and Bollywood stars regularly endorse these products. But now the film star Nandita Das has taken a stance against the craze and given her support to the Dark is Beautiful campaign which challenges the belief that success and beauty are determined by skin colour. “I want people to be comfortable in their own skin and realise that there is more to life than skin colour,” she says, adding that an Indian paper had written “about my support for the campaign and then lightened the photo of me that went alongside it”.

While she agrees that there is a long history behind the obsession with skin colour, owing to caste and culture, she thinks the current causes should be targeted first. “Indians are very racist. It’s deeply ingrained. But there is so much pressure by peer groups, magazines, billboards and TV adverts that perpetuate this idea that fair is the ideal,” she says.

Das has often faced directors and makeup artists trying to lighten her when she plays the role of an educated, upper-class woman. “They always say to me: ‘Don’t worry, we will lighten you, we’re really good at it,’ as a reassurance. It’s perpetuating a stereotype that only fair-skinned women can be educated and successful.”

In 2005, the cosmetics company Emami launched Fair & Handsome for men, with an ad featuring the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan tossing a tube of whitening cream to a hopeful young fan, which the Dark is Beautiful campaign is seeking to have withdrawn. “Shah Rukh Khan is saying that to be successful you have to be fair,” says Das. “Don’t these people have any kind of conscience? You can’t be naive; you know what kind of impact you have and yet you send out the message that says: ‘Forget about working hard, it’s about skin colour.'”

Dark is so beautiful that it requires a campaign to convince people of it. All of those generations who for thousands of years thought differently were such idiots.

I’ve had some nasty experiences with east indians saying white people are gross, etc.

East Indians have an incredible amount of resentment about the British colonizing India, which they take out on ALL white people.

Soooooo true… when they start to wind me up because my last name is Cheaters.. I say yes, I’m English, my country gave up on yours because the spices weren’t worth the trouble.

I am wondering if the very fair skinned Indians have Caucasian blood somewhere. Perhaps they could be descendants of illicit relationships between Brits and Indians?

    • Paul

Of course they do, you can not get fair-skinned without it.

Yes, she looks like an Australian aborigine. Anthropologists still have trouble classifying them into the main racial divisions of mankind.

Australoids are themselves one of the main racial divisions of mankind.

          • ShermanTMcCoy

And the lowest average IQs on the planet.

          • Franklin_Ryckaert

No, the lowest are the Bushmen and the Pygmees. According to Richard Lynn’s book Race Differences in Intelligence : an evolutionary analysis, 2006 following are the average IQs of the main racial groups of humanity : East Asians (105), Europeans (100), Inuit (Eskimo) (91), South East Asians (87), Native Americans (87), Pacific Islanders (85), South Asians and North Africans (84), Indians (82), Sub Sahara Africans (67), Australian Aborigines (62), Bushmen and Pygmees (54). The average IQ of the world is estimated to be 90 (which is the estimated everage IQ of the white unskilled worker BTW). Furthermore, the average IQ of American Blacks (who have 20% white genes) is 85, the average IQ of Ashkenazi Jews is 107, while their average verbal IQ is 115. But the group with the highest average IQ are South Indian Brahmins with an average IQ of 120. In the case of these latter two strictly endogamic groups consciously or inconsciously eugenics must have been involved. For further information on Richard Lynn’s book, see : Wikipedia : Race Differences in Intelligence (book).

          • Bossman

If those South Indians Brahmins have such high IQs, why do they still continue to believe in non-existent gods. Most of the old pagan gods of Greece and Rome are now dead but they are still alive in India.

          • Franklin_Ryckaert

And such intelligent Greeks like Socrates, Plato and Aristoteles also believed in their gods. Believe in the supernatural – in whatever form – can very well go together with high intelligence.

          • ShermanTMcCoy

Thanks for the correction, I own the book and just had a memory lapse.

“Indians are very racist. It’s deeply ingrained. ….

Indians might be racist, but they are more caste conscious.
    Darker skin represents lower caste.

    • NeanderthalDNA

The upper classes are descended from ancient Aryan invaders who were White.

The caste system was an early attempt to protect the race. After thousands of years, it has obviously been corrupted, though through the miracle of genetic randomness many Indians do inherit enough White genetics to pass for white. This happens elsewhere as well.

      • Bossman

I’ve just read a book on Hinduism by an American with a degree in that subject. She says most Hindus don’t believe that there was ever an invasion by ancients Aryans.

  • bigone4u

The skin creme doesn’t work, judging from the dark skins on the Hindu hoardes taking over the north central area of San Antonio, near the university. The university has admitted tons of them as students and hired zillions of them as profs. An agenda there somewhere.

    • Ngati Pakeha

I was doing a postgrad class a couple of years back and this smarmy Indian woman was our professor. She started the class by stating; “As you can tell from my accent I have spent a lot of time in the US…” blah blah blah. The kicker was the fact that she had a strong Indian accent! I told the person next to me that the lecturer sounded to me like someone who came from a place that was over 40° (>100 for those in the US) everyday and smelled like a sewer. My voice apparently carried a little too far and one of my cohorts reported me to the Dean. I was lucky to stay in school!

      • http://www.amren.com/ Michael Christopher Scott

Was she a Muslim Indian? They can be pretty notorious for body odor. I blend my own curry spices for vindaloo, saag, tikka, and chandoori, so I know pretty much what they eat, and genuinely bathing infrequently after that diet really does a job on someone’s smell. The Hindu engineers and their families I knew back in the day had reasonable hygene habits and never stank like Muslims. They were merely extremely impressed with themselves, instead.

        • Ngati Pakeha

Look to be fair to the woman she was more of the later you describe. She was very “impressed” with herself. She just went to great lengths to talk about all her journal articles etc etc etc. She also had that annoying Indian habit of rolling her head as she spoke. She was very dark like the Indians from the south. I’ll give credit where it is due as her intellectual contribution was fine. It was just the smug “look at me” attitude she adopted. All sorts of academics can be full of themselves but these people just rub me up the wrong way.

I’ll bet those “baseball mitt” tans make a woman’s hide look like football pigskin by the time they’re 40, let alone my age. I wear a hat or cap (turned properly) and photogrey prescription lenses during the summer, and my wife wears a broad-brimmed straw hat and sunglasses; we like to keep the sun off our faces. Colorado Springs is at 6000 feet, so there’s more UV in the sunlight up here, and we get about 300 sunny days each year.

      Skin cancer isn’t “healthy”.

      • NeanderthalDNA

Yeah…a little sun is great. Keeps the brain healthy, vitamin D production. Nice.

But this idiotic obsession with looking like a non-White makes me sick. How many Whites die each year because they were ashamed of their beautiful white hides?

        Hate thineself, Whitey!

While worldwide darkies apply sketchy chemicals to their skin to look whiter!

        Irony, sweet irony…

        • Irishgirl

I’ve been told so many times to “get some sun” because I’m so pale. I try to explain that I can’t tan because the pigmentation just isn’t there. And skin cancer is pretty much inevitable in my family, so I’m choosing pallor and health!

          • NeanderthalDNA

You will be beautiful for a long time, therefore…

          • http://www.amren.com/ Michael Christopher Scott

I tan really easily, but I still don’t want skin cancer.

          • MariaO’Connor

            I have your same problem.

  • IKantunderstand

Skin color is about supply and demand. Just like everything else in this world. If something is scarce, it is held in higher demand. White people, light skinned whatevers, are rare. Plus which, because Whites are the creators of civilization, to be genetically connected with Whites, is a bragging point, and generally leads to higher intelligence and better looks. But, I suppose, if you have bought into the whole egalitarian thing, then there should be no distinctions based on skin color. So, why is there in India? Come on, you can talk about it. Please, it predated the English showing up. Why, in fact, did the Indian caste system involve the color of a person’s skin? Way prior to the British ever setting one foot on their soil? And, believe me, I have heard about the foreign incursions that would have introduced lighter skin and eyes into the mix. So, why did the lighter Northern Indians have hegemony over the darker southern groups? Intelligence? Beauty? Oddly, it would appear that the lighter skinned people, no matter where they appear around the globe, are the ones held in high esteem. Some sort of juju? The old capitalist theory of supply and demand? Or, maybe, something, I don’t know, evolutionary. Why is it that intelligence seems to be positively correlated with skin color? Or, would that be negatively ? I postulate, that the lighter the complexion, the higher your score on an I.Q. test. Within races, within ethnic groups, you name it. You Whiter, you brighter. If I could conduct studies on this, I would. Seriously, if the untouchable class in India was smart, then, despite their black skin, they would not still be at the bottom of the Indian caste system.

    • Bossman

Civilization arose around the shores of the Mediterranean and in the Middle East. In those sunny regions most people were tan-complexioned. According to some radical feminists, if white skin has more value, it is because with white skin, a woman looks more naked.

      • http://www.amren.com/ Michael Christopher Scott

        I like naked women!

  • Ella

Micheal Jackson probably bought all 233 tonnes of skin-whitening products. I never seen a Black man who mutated to White. Even with vitiligo, he’d have patches or spotting.

    • http://www.amren.com/ Michael Christopher Scott

With vitiligo, Jackson also wouldn’t have felt the need to straighten his hair or mess up his face the way he did. The painkilling drugs he became hooked on after being badly burned in that old Pepsi commercial turned him into an emotional wreck; that’s why he was bleaching, and that’s why he had one of his (white) doctors father white kids for him.

Posting a pic of a pretty blonde tart and making up a name that could not be more Jewish and then dissin’ on anything remotely White is a great way to insinuate yourself onto a White race realist site and stir up some antifa agitprop.

You could always commit suicide if you can’t take honest commentary. If you didn’t want people to think and write about it, why did you publish it – in English – in the first place? You don’t get to have these things both ways; the white world is not a captive audience for you to lecture as if we were misbehaving children.

      • monisharajesh

I’m British, and I write for a British newspaper. Difficult for you to comprehend, I can see. But how this comment:

“Be as brown and dirty as you dare smell.. keep your diseases and your nake charmers with the fangs removed to yourselves..”

has any relevance to the fact that this is a news report about an actress fronting a campaign against skin-lightening is beyond me.

I also notice you removed the comment where you told me I could “commit suicide” — if you have any courage in what you say, post using your own photograph and a genuine account.

My name is Michael Christopher Scott. I look like this:

    • Franklin_Ryckaert

Well the Aryans were themselves “ragingly racist” towards the darkskinned native Indians when they invaded India, that’s why they created the caste system. Since then the whole population of India has become “ragingly racist”, hence their obsession with skin color. “Racism” is normal and exists eveywhere in the world. All darkskinned peoples see whiteness as their ideal and all whites don’t want to loose it by miscegenation. If that is “utterly disgusting” then the whole world is disgusting.

    • 5Sardonicus

No, what is racist and “utterly disgusting” is the enduring Indian preference for lighter skin.

  • Bossman

Ancient India and ancient Europe are connected somehow through what is called the Indo-European language.

British food is tasteless but they do make nice pastries.

  • Cicero

I always get a kick out of it when darker peoples or “Lords of diversity” start going on about how shameful it is that tons of their own people long to look more white. One of the reasons white people are so beautiful is because we ARE so diverse in our appearance. Unlike blacks, Asians, Indians and Hispanics, Europeans naturally have different eye colors, hair colors and textures as well as different skin tones. From Northern European milky white to olive colored Mediterranian.

    • MariaO’Connor

Some hispanics are as white as you are, including of pure German, Irish, Italian background.

  • MBlanc46

Another “Black is beautiful” campaign. You’ll know that people think it is when there aren’t any more “Black is beautiful” campaigns.

    • OlderWoman

I have a problem watching films with black actors and actresses. The lighting is always bad. I turn them off if they tout blacks as beautiful and moral or as heros. I know that portrayal is a stretch and pandering to blacks. I much prefer British films with all white casts. It isn’t difficult to find them.

“Black is beautiful” is one of the three biggest lies.

      • MBlanc46

You don’t have to go around shouting “The sky is blue!” Everyone knows it it. They do have to go around “Black is beautiful!”

        • Franklin_Ryckaert

Because black is not beautiful and black people are painfully conscious of it.

          • MBlanc46

Which is why the go around hollering “Black is beautiful!” It’s an exercise in self-delusion.

          • Franklin_Ryckaert

Their problem will end if they accept the way they are.

          • MBlanc46

I don’t think their problem will end as long as they have to compare themselves with us. Segregation is the only answer.

          • Franklin_Ryckaert

Well yes, non-Whites who live among their own people in their own countries usually have no inferiority complex towards Whites. They see the occasional White in their country as “strange” but not as a standard of human beauty.

Light skin is more attractive than dark skin. Vision is primarily the perception of color, depth and shadow. It’s harder to see the shadows created by those high cheek bones in a swarthy person.

If the photo of an attractive white person were retouched to darken the subject’s skin color, the subject wouldn’t be as attractive to most people. Instead of a viewer being able to see those subtle difference in light and shade across a person’s face, they’d see what was more like a featureless blob.

The Japanese don’t “remember” either that they came from the mainland via Korea. And that happened only 2300 years ago. The Aryans came in India about 3500 years ago. The Vedas are religious books containing hymns to gods with no historical contents. There are however some allusions in the Vedas of fights with darkskinned natives and rivers in Afghanistan are also mentioned. Artefacts associated with these Aryans have been found in Central Asia, South of the Aral lake. For further information see : Advent of the Aryans in India, by Ram Sharan Sharma.

    Just a short diversion:

Blacks think the Song of Solomon is about them because of verse 5 “I am black, but comely…” However, it refers to a sunburnt light-skinned woman, the love interest of Solomon. Verse 6 proves this “Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me…”

Just thought I add this to the conversation. You know how blacks are. More black mythology.

  • Franklin_Ryckaert

Exactly, India never was a settler colony of the British. The British only ruled over India and in the process united and modernized it. Therefore it is incorrect to consider the modern colonization of Britain by Indians as a form of “historical justice”. The same is true of all other immigrants from former non-settler colonies.

  • Franklin_Ryckaert

The irony of your statement is just fabulous.

    You are an immigrant.

Or at least your ancestors were when they too arrived from across the seas to the United States however many years ago — just like all those immigrants you fear now.

Native Americans are called native for a reason.

    Think about it.

    • Franklin_Ryckaert

You do not understand the historical dynamics of ethnic interests. Whites are European “immigrants” in America, yes, you can even call them colonizers who “stole” the land of the American Indians. But since they became the majority in North America and built the whole country with all its institutions, it is in their ethnic interest to keep their population European. The same dynamics would occur if America would have been colonized by Chinese or if you will by East Indians. Besides, I don’t think Indians would wellcome mass immigration of Chinese into their country, nor would the Chinese wellcome mass immigration of Indians into their country (provided there would be place enough). That is ethnic interest at work and it works independently of the question whether a given population is indigenous or not.

      • 5Sardonicus

In fact India and China generally do not allow immigration to their respected countries. Only European majority countries allow immigrants from countries that have no comparable reciprocal immigration arrangements. It would be nice to think that non European immigrants are grateful to the majority white people of their new countries, but that is not always the case.

    • http://www.amren.com/ Michael Christopher Scott

White or not the Persians and Greeks did not create the oldest civilizations of the world. That honor goes to the Sumerians and the Egyptians. Both were Caucasoids, but the Egyptians definitely of a brown hue. The myth of “Adam” of course carries no proof.

Wayne believes in myths and allegorical tales; that is one sure sign that he is a simpleton.

Say, Sarah Levi-Cohen-Goldberg-Rothstein-Shapiro what is your ethnic identity?

  • Franklin_Ryckaert

The British united you as an “unintended consequence” of their colonial rule. You yourself described the process very well. The same happened in many other European colonies such as Indonesia etc. Also the introduction of English united India and opened it to the modern world. South India has a problem to accept Hindi as the national language, so they still prefer English. The British also committed crimes during their colonial rule, but so did Moslim rulers of India. The best contributions of the British to India were infrastructure, law and education. I understand that no people likes to be ruled by others, even if their rule is “beneficient”. As for the “historical justice” argument, that is used by those who say that mass immigration of non-Europeans into countries such as Britain is a “just punishment” for their colonial past. First they invaded their countries, now they are invaded by them. That is the idea. But as I said, the British never settled India in great numbers, so why should they accept Indians doing it to them?

    “India’s whitening-cream market was worth $432m,…”

I wonder if there is a market for kinky-hair straightener.

  • Spartacus

    That’s disgusting…

  • monisharajesh

No, moron, you aren’t. But having been born and bred in England, I’m British. Whether or not you consider me British is of little consequence to me.

And as for your comment about welfare scroungers, of course they exist, but I suggest you watch an episode of Jeremy Kyle to see their ethnic origin and skin colour.

Whites or near-Whites can still be found in the North West of the Indian sub-continent (now mostly part of Pakistan), among the two upper castes of the Hindus (Brahmins and Kshatrias) and among Sikhs. But they came not in pre-historical times, but in the full light of history. The Vedic Aryans came in India about 1500 BC, while the ancestors of the very white looking Sikh caste of Jats who are of Scythian origin invaded India in the first century BC.

Franklin, I appreciate your correction. However, people in this web should stop labeling others whites “as white looking”, because, they do not live in Europe or in an English speaking country. There are Caucasian people, in places outside Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland,
due to very ancient migrations, or emigrations after the 1500’s and if those
people undergo a DNA test the results will be as white as Scandinavians. Some people are racist or segregationist, even with their own race, and I am not referring to your comment, but several comments. Whites are not disappearing; they are just spreaded all over the world.
