‘Traces of Pork DNA’ Found in Halal Prison Meat

BBC News, February 2, 2013

The Ministry of Justice is to suspend a firm supplying meat to prisons after tests found that it may have provided pies and pasties described as halal—but with traces of pork DNA.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the local authority involved was investigating, while the MoJ said the products have been withdrawn.

Justice minister Jeremy Wright said the incident was “absolutely unacceptable”.

Under Islamic law, Muslims are strictly forbidden to eat pork.

In a statement, Mr Wright said the Prison Service was investigating the incident “as a matter of urgency”.

“This is an absolutely unacceptable situation and one which we regret greatly.

“Clearly this must be distressing for those affected and they can be reassured we are doing everything we can to resolve the situation.”

Steve Wearne, an FSA director, said it had called an urgent meeting “of a range of suppliers” on Monday where it would “stress again the responsibility of all food businesses to ensure the food that they sell contains what it says on the label”.

‘Immediate steps’

The MoJ said it had commissioned tests after the “recent high profile incidents” in which beefburgers sold by some supermarket chains were found to contain horsemeat.

It said the results of the tests, undertaken by an independent agency, became known on Thursday.

A spokesman said: “All prisons have been informed about this very regrettable incident and we reported this issue to the Food Standards Agency immediately.

“We are taking immediate steps to suspend the contract with the relevant sub-contractor.”

An FSA spokeswoman said it had been informed that a number of meat pies and pasties supplied to UK prisons—labelled and served as halal—could have contained traces of pork DNA.

She said: “The local authority is investigating how this contamination came about and whether these products have been distributed further across the UK.”

She added that the supplier and the local authority were based in the same area, but declined to say where.

Halal rules

Under Islamic law, the eating of pork is strictly prohibited for Muslims, as is the consumption of meat which has not been slaughtered in the correct way.

Halal meat is defined as meat slaughtered by hand and blessed by the person doing the killing, however some Muslims believe a mechanised form is also now acceptable.

Earlier Food and farming minister David Heath said people “have a right to expect that the food they are eating is correctly described” and that he wanted a meeting with retailers and suppliers next week to “get to the bottom of this completely unacceptable situation.”

Editor of the Muslim News, Ahmed Versi, said: “This is very serious because no Muslim would ever eat pork meat—anything to do with pork—and it must be very distressing for those in prison who have been given this meat to realise they may have been eating food which was contaminated with pig.”

Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust charity, said: “This lapse will have offended and distressed high numbers of Muslim prisoners and their families so apologising, suspending the supplier and investigating the incident are the right steps for the Ministry of Justice to take.”

Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University, said the horse burger incident two weeks ago and this latest one demonstrated the complexity of the food chain.

Asked about the FSA’s ability to carry out its role, he said: “When an institution is set up to be a watchdog on a troublesome institution or industry . . .  within a short time it’ll lose its edge.

“It’ll start being accommodating, it’ll build relationships. This is well known. Institutions suffer from ‘agency capture’.”

But Mr Wearne told the BBC the FSA was not too close to the industry and remained an independent regulator.

“I killed four white women and am serving life in prison as a Muslim man. I deserve the right to uphold my religious beliefs and I don’t want pork in my food…”

    TOO F&#%ING BAD!

    • Gerónimo Anónimo

The should have added an unhealthy dose of Cyanide to the pork.

  • David Ashton

Am I right in thinking that a Spanish Queen encouraged the departure of Arabs from the House of Conflict by requiring all households to display a leg of pork in the window?

  • MikeS

The prison officials should give the prisoners two choices. They can either have an all-bacon and sausage diet or, (2) They can eat a cyanide capsule which is guaranteed to be 100% pork-free. Nothing but whining cave men they are.

  • guest

Unbelievable! Even as prisoners, these muslim criminals are still being coddled and catered to. And here I always thought that prison was supposed to be a form of punishment.

    • Fredrik_H

It’s because they and their kin WILL stir up trouble if they don’t get their way. Muslims have learned well how to work the white systems.

      • Sloppo

These problems could be solved easily if the people who tell our political “leaders” what to do wanted. The muslims are being used to destroy our civilization by the people who want absolute power over us. They want us to beg the government to do whatever it takes to control the chaos and they want us desperate enough to give up what freedom we have left.

    • Gerónimo Anónimo

Well aren’t we doing the same thing with the Mau Mau?

  • Luca

If they are so worried, let them eat fish, poultry and vegetables. More liberal insanity by catering to the criminals who want to destroy you.

    • StillModerated

Shag that! Feed them bread and water. Maybe beans and rice on Sundays — if they’re not naughty.

  • glort

as a victim of muslim crime, may I say “who gives a f*”

  • NeanderthalDNA

Did some volunteer work at a homeless shelter not long ago. We served good hot meals. Not gourmet, but nutritious and pretty tasty, I thought. Especially for the price…

But…always a big pain to have to find a pork substitute for the “Muslims”. Really? Look, I’m a cat lover, and though I don’t know if I’d eat one of my own little guys, if I were destitute and hungry, and someone prepped, cooked, and offered me a yummy looking and smelling plate of “roof rabbit”, I’d eat the heck outta it, ask for seconds, offer to help clean up or something.

But then what do I know? Evil and white…

  • The__Bobster

Only sick societies care more about their criminals than their victims.

    • ed91

and this is one sick society we have arrived at.

    • Yorkshireman.

If these muslims cared as much for obeying our civilised western laws as much as they claim they are commanded to respect islamic dietary law, they would not be in prison in the first place. I very much doubt if they are fed at all in any prison in any islamic country.

I have long felt that a fortnight of true hunger might best supersede decades of religious and political brainwashing. Diet does have a profound effect on mood and learning. Lately, I have eaten breakfasts of deer sausage with a liberal dusting of smoked paprika, eggs poached in the same skillet (cast iron, of course), a small piece of cantaloupe and black coffee. And I am ready for war.

    • Michael_C_Scott

Mmmmmm… cantaloupe! It’s quite good with prosciutto, dry-cured, uncooked, thin-sliced HAM. Yes, raw HAM!

  • NeanderthalDNA

Traces? You know, you can find traces of fecal matter many places too…

    • ed91

      especially around things muslim

      • Garrett Brown

        Haha!

      • George

It’s a case of where it’s clearly better that the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing…

    • Yorkshireman.

….especially in dishes of peanuts on the bar counter……

      • Pat

…and face/hand cream testers on the cosmetic counters…

      • Pelayo

lOL!! I agree. We generally ask the barman for a fresh bowl of peanuts/ trail mix which we dispense by pouring out on our napkins.

  • storibund

    Haha! No virgins for you!!

  • Fredrik_H

Just another one of those news that absolutely boggle the mind. The absurdity of western society, it is too much to bear at times.

    • Yorkshireman.

If any of you have ever lived in a Muslim country and seen a ‘halal’ butchers shop in operation with a total lack of personal cleanliness or food hygiene, you may realise that they are more concerned that a few Islamic words uttered over the animal being slaughtered makes the meat pure. I doubt that there are any official food poisoning figures available.

I’ve seen these stands in Manhattan with signs advertising “Halal Meat” being served from these disgusting looking five gallon white plastic buckets by these equally disgusting vendors with their skanky beards and their rotting teeth. who look like they haven’t EVER bathed.

  • MekongDelta69

    Mmmmmmmmm… Bacon…

    • Joseph

      Doh!

  • bigone4u

“Clearly this must be distressing for those affected and they can be reassured we are doing everything we can to resolve the situation.”
Can you grovel anymore than that, Mr. Bureaucrat? Go ahead, grovel some more. Go ahead, I dare ya.

    • Joseph

He must offer up his wife and daughter to the Moslem prisoners to make amends for the insult, which he will most gladly do, no doubt.

  • Kaffirsmasher

Of course, the idea that it might reduce Muslim crime by making it uncertain whether they’re going to be able to eat halal in prison never entered the libtards’ minds, did it?

    • SFLBIB

I don’t think it would because of two things: 1) prisoners suddenly find religion in jail; 2) prisoners often make unusual demands as a way of getting back at their guards.

  • Joseph

This IS urgent. Why waste perfectly good pork on these sand-thugs? Let them eat road-kill from the rendering plant.

  • Michael_C_Scott

This is an easy one to explain. Have any of you ever read the back of a food package label which included the warning “May contain traces of peanuts or other nuts” even when the product itself did not? This is because various foods are often processed on the same machinery. It is no stretch at all to imagine a meat packing plant hosing off their production line when they’re done with pork and ready to start chicken or beef.

And no; they won’t get 100% of it removed.

    • IstvanIN

Absolutely. And while we might all agree in truth in labeling the fact remains is that these men are inmates, prisoners, criminals and, unless fed something that causes sickness, should be told to eat what is served and be thankful for that.

      • Michael_C_Scott

(Shrug). Working the dock behind the kitchen in federal prison in 2002, I unloaded boxes of frozen chicken marked “For Zoo Animals Only: Not For Human Consumption”. I didn’t have a problem eating it, so long as it was cooked thoroughly. It didn’t make anyone sick, either, but nobody in their right mind would eat undercooked chicken, even fresh off an organic, free-range farm.

In addition to pork, the Old Testament, which is the origin of all of the Middle Eastern Religions also forbids other things I like: horsemeat, rabbit, shellfish, octopus, squid, snake, alligator, eel, catfish, and shark, to name a few, but the same bronze-age “god” who doesn’t want me eating these says that crickets and grasshoppers are OK.

A simple solution would be to put all the Muzzies on a vegetarian diet in which their protein intake would consist of peanut butter and hard-boiled eggs. If a few of them have violent peanut allergies, at least pork doesn’t cause anaphylactic shock.

The real dinner-winner here is that these Muzzies are not only willing to enter foreign, non-Muslim countries in which all locally-obtained food must be considered suspect, but then commit crimes there, resulting in their being placed in a position in which non-Muslims supply their food. The easy solutions would be (A) stay in North Africa and West Asia or (B) don’t commit crimes in Britain.

        • Michael_C_Scott

As an aside, I didn’t complain about the markings on the boxes, because I knew I could either be sent farther into the system or have an “accident” if I caused trouble.

    • bigone4u

Excellent point. Muslims demand a stone age food supply system to adhere to their unscientific dietary laws. Food processed in factories will always fail the halal test.

    • Anonymous

The Muslim meals should he garnished with a nice helping of rodent droppings.

      • Michael_C_Scott

We already have those in most grain products, though the US FDA limits the amount that can be present.

  • Robert Marchenoir

Why is it a problem that condemned criminals are “distressed” and “offended” ? I thought that was the whole point of throwing them into jail.

  • Ulick

I love how a little non-halal in Muslims meat and the English are supposed to be distressed. Yet a lot of Muslims in England and the English are insane, racist, evil if they’re distressed. The one-way street of conquering a nation.

  • George

    Message to Moslems:

If you can’t eat the swine, don’t do the crime.

    • George

      Thanks, Moderator!

      Nice catch on that!

Juliet Lyon. Who are you and what is your major malfunction?

  • MarcusTrajanus

What’s the problem? Maybe now they’ll think twice about committing crimes and ending up in jail.

  • hdon

this is disgraceful so u all are saying only white non Muslim criminals should treated with rights and anyway why should muslims have to adapt to your shitty western laws which include degrading women and getting pissed

  • MarcusTrajanus

I have an idea, why not let them serve their sentences back in their home countries? No chance of pork contaminated food in a Pakistani jail. Think they’d go for it?

    • SFLBIB

That might backfire on you. Remember when Castro emptied his insane asylums when Jimmeh Catter offered to take in any Cubans wishing to leave Cuba?

      • MarcusTrajanus

No, I’m afraid I don’t have any memories of 1980. Must be the drugs, man…. or the fact I was an infant.

I don’t see how my idea could backfire like that, I’m sending criminals away, not taking them in.

        • SFLBIB

What makes you think they will stay there? They got here once; they can do it again.

  • http://www.facebook.com/george.clark.7545 George Clark

I wish to know one thing, and one thing only. According to Islam, will all of these muslim prisoners automatically now go to hell, since they unknowingly consumed pork? Of course not. They can knowingly consume pork, if it is the only available food, to keep from dying, if they “truly repent” afterwards. If I were in charge, all prisoners would have a choice between ham, eggs, bacon, sausage, and spam, and confinement loaf for all three squares.

    • Michael_C_Scott

I’m going to Hell, but for a completely different reason.
