The University of Miami has come under fire after it sent a seemingly racist emergency text to students warning that a ‘black male’ was on campus.

The University had meant to alert students on Wednesday night to the fact that police were pursuing two suspects in a reported laptop theft and that one was armed.

But, in an embarrassing gaffe, the message failed to mention the crime, simply stating: ‘Black male on campus wearing black and white tennis shoes, white shirt w/blk writing, black shorts..’

After the alert, the university reportedly phoned students, telling them to lock their doors and stay away from windows.

The strange text quickly found its way onto the internet where it sparked a mix of confusion and criticism.

Facebook user Robbie Deutsch posted a picture of the text message on his page and received a barrage of comments.

‘I guess they thought it was more important to mention that he’s black than that he has a gun…’ Ryan Farber wrote.

While Eitan Finkelstein made a joke out of the situation.

‘One thing we know: the gunner himself ain’t racist, mixing em white and black colors in his get up,’ he wrote. ‘He may kill people, but he does so without prejudice. Society should learn from his example..’

The University responded to the outrage with a statement of its Facebook page apologising for the ‘incomplete and insensitive’ messages.

‘The University of Miami Police Department issued an ENN (Emergency Notification Network) at 9:13pm to alert the campus community to the developing situation and to make them aware of the police perimeter and ongoing search for the suspects,’ it read.

‘At 9:49pm, an all-clear message was communicated. The initial ENN was both incomplete and insensitive and the University of Miami offers its sincere apologies.

‘University leadership has already launched a full investigation of the incident, the ENN and University procedures.

‘The University will make every effort to learn from this experience and to improve its responsiveness in the future.’

The ‘black man’ in the warning text, Del’Neco Streeter of Miami, was apprehended by police at the scene and a second suspect is still being pursued.

The 21-year-old, who doesn’t attend the University, is accused of stealing an Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer from a dorm room earlier in the week. He then attempted to sell the item back to its owner for $1,000 and arranged a ‘drop time.’

Officers managed to recover the laptop.

According to The Miami Herald, nearly 1,100 black students attend UM, representing about 8 per cent of the undergraduate student body and 7 per cent of graduate students.

The university has had an emergency notification system for years. It was expanded after 2007′s Virginia Tech shooting massacre.

Seems like a reasonable warning. What’s the problem?

    • http://twitter.com/baldowl baldowl

Right. If you say to me, “There’s a black male nearby,” the first thing I’m going to do is check for my wallet.

How long before “black male on campus” will be all the warning/description needed?

    • AngryWhiteMan

If you get rid of Affirmative Action and federal loans and grants, about one semester

      • The__Bobster

True, only about 2% of them have the requisite 115 IQ needed to be decent college students.

You could attend a full day’s worth of classes without seeing a single one of them

‘I guess they thought it was more important to mention that he’s black than that he has a gun…’ Ryan Farber wrote.

Actually, they were equally important, Ryan.

For the educated, when you say black, gun is understood

  • HamletsGhost

“Black male on campus” should be treated the same way as “Shark in the water” would be treated at the beach. No guarantee that anything will happen, but prudent to know about.

    • StillModerated

Aww, come on colleges have lots of black people: the basketball team, the football team, the Afro-”studies” professors, the janitorial crew. Scratch that! Mexicans do the menial work now because they have an amazing ability to show up every day.

  • Nathanwartooth

They are just doing what they are programmed to do.

Shout “RACIST!” at anything that might be perceived as insensitive towards any protected group.

At least they are absorbing their college materials well.

It seems that colleges do a lot of apologizing for YT nowadays.

The story you posted is odd.

Why are incidents like this still happening on campus? These kids were brought up in the most politically correct environment imaginable and yet they still don’t seem to get the message. With all the indoctrination they experience today, these kids should ‘know better’. Why then aren’t they sensitive to PC issues?

I suspect that as much as the powers that be try to push their agenda, young kids still see the world as it is; Hispanics are seen mowing other peoples’ lawns in higher numbers, They see it and they know it.

Are young kids merely paying lip service to political correctness? Saying what they’re expected to say in public but in private expressing their opinions about the world around them?

Because they were taught that only white males that can be identified as NAZIS are racists or insensitive.

P.S. I noticed a few Asians and Latinas in that picture, and with a group that large I am sure there was at least one jew.

  • You Are Now Enriched

Well, maybe at least one White student said to himself in an “unguarded” moment after reading this alert, “I thought I was the only one who…”

  • Michael_C_Scott

I’m actually suprised. Most of the time, a police report will describe a suspect as “wearing a blue jacket” while including no physical description at all.

    • IstvanIN

The first time I heard about the subway pusher in NYC over the radio they even described the miscreants dreadlocks but not his race.

      • Joseph

I’ve always thought that “dread” was an appropriate part of that word.

  • fsagas

So describing a suspect is now racist?

If there was a white suspect I would sure want to know.

What about sexism? After all they just named a the suspect a “man.”

    This is getting beyond stupid.

  • redfeathers

Were they looking for Cam Newton, already a known laptop thief?

  • jay11

Lots of blacks there will now complain of emotional distress and file lawsuits, have sit-ins for a newer and bigger black student union, more diversity mandates, etc. You watch.

    • gemjunior

Guaranteed. Like a shark smells blood they smell more handouts. Disgusting. No shame.

  • Joseph

Where is George Ziimmerman when they need him?

You should appreciate that the British are very sanctimonious about racism and race relations in the US as a way to avoid the harsh and destructive realities in their own countries.

The Guardian and many British talk shows think America is a horribly racist society.

Until you walk a mile in another man’s shoes… shut up.

  • http://www.newnation.org/ sbuffalonative

I would think this is funny but it isn’t in any way. In fact, this makes me angry.

This mistake has now given our enemies more ammunition to use against us; something to point out how insensitive, ignorant, and racist white folk are (even if the person responsible isn’t white). This is the kind of stuff that drives newspapers to purge any mention of race.

With this mistake, all future alerts will omit the race of the suspect. The next time, people won’t know who to protect themselves from.

    • Michael_C_Scott

Except for people wearing blue jackets.

I love it how the university “has already launched a full investigation,” as if this glitch might have been the result of some secret KKK Klavern operating on campus.

This reminded me of once being told by someone who was a veteran emergency services dispatcher–I’ll pause here to mention she was about as apolitical as they come, so was not trying to make any kind of a political point–about how in cases where the police need to quickly track someone down, usually a criminal suspect, but it could be a victim, lost child or whomever, the caller or witness is routinely asked if the person they are looking for is male, female, white, black, Latino, Asian, young or old. Obviously if you are hurriedly searching for someone in an emergency, it is helpful to be aware of their appearance.

It says something tellingly hilarious about our society that sometimes the caller will pause in the middle of an emergency phone call, while asking for help, and indignantly ask, “Why do you need to know the person’s race?” But here is the icing on the cake: It is never a minority. It is always a white person, apparently trying to uphold the highest standards of politically correct egalitarianism–sometimes even after being mugged. Less hilarious is that such nutty off-planet utopian people are now in charge of our society.

  • Classicist

It was very possibly a Black who wrote up the warning — not maliciously making the omission of the crime, but out of carelessness.
