Students Vote to Rename Columbus Day ‘Indigenous People’s Day’

Blake Baxter, The College Fix, December 17, 2012

The student government at Arizona State University has voted to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People Day. The Tempe Undergraduate Student Government Senate passed Bill 44 to rename the holiday after contentious debate on campus.

Christopher Columbus has long been known as an admirable adventurer in American lore whose adventurous spirit led him to “discover” America. But, in recent years his legacy has faced mounting criticism for the perceived negative effects his life had on Native Americans.

In the United States, Columbus Day is an official federal holiday. However, not all states recognize the day. South Dakota, instead, celebrates Native American Day. The name “Indigenous People Day” originated in Berkley, California, a city that began celebrating the holiday as an alternative to Columbus Day in 1992.

In Tempe, students were split on the issue. Those in support of the change believed that the bill was a positive way to commemorate the Native Americans whose lives they say were lost as a result of Columbus’s arrival to the New World. The opposition said the bill was an example of unnecessary political correctness. There was also another group that preferred that the campus do away with celebrating the day for either cause.

Many admirers of Columbus view him as a symbol of exploration, perseverance, innovation and the beginning of the American spirit. However, critics of the famous explorer paint a darker picture of the man, and more broadly, of European settlement of the New World that he represents. They often cite, for example, the diseases carried by European explorers like Columbus and his men, which caused the deaths of many Native Americans.

Great. I’ll join a Joe Arpaio rally in support of indigenous Americans.

To honor “Indigenous Peoples Day” they should all:

    1. Not use electricity.

    2. Not use indoor plumbing.

    3. If you get sick, instead of a hospital, go to a witch doctor and have him rub chicken blood on your face.

    4. Sleep on a tee-pee on the ground and use a stone ax to hunt for your supper.

    5. No cars, wheels, tv, radio, video games. They need to really “go native” here to show support.

The term “indigenous peoples” is far too eurocentric, given that it reflects the European viewpoint that these were the people who were here when the Europeans showed up in the 15th century (note I’m not discounting that proto-Europeans probably were here thousands of years before, but were wiped out by the red man). Available anthropological evidence indicates that the “indigenous peoples” were themselves immigrants at a much earlier time. I prefer to call them the First Nativists for their occasionally violent resistance to white immigration.

I pity any white child in a public school now. Ouch

    It’s only gonna get worse.

And sadly, all the “useful-idiot” whites who protest side by side with non-whites WHO BLEEPING HATE THEM somehow think that they (being so altruistic toward non-whites) will actually have a place at the table happily provided by a non-white majority.

    • Rasmus

Those useful idiots are traitors. Here’s hoping they enjoy the brave new world they’re helping to create when their children are passed over for employment or promotion in favor of some half-witted, amnestied cholo. Here’s hoping the joy they experience from celebrating diversity outweighs the stress they’ll feel having to dodge bullets during the nightly drive-by’s.

The blacks and browns can have the liberal whites as far as I’m concerned.

They often cite, for example, the diseases carried by European explorers
like Columbus and his men, which caused the deaths of many Native
    Americans….
    ___________

…..conveniently forgetting the venereal disease that the savages spread to the Old World.

    http://www.livescience.com/2217-columbus-brought-syphilis-europe.html

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue, but when he sailed back ‘cross the sea, he may have spread a new disease — syphilis.

The first recorded epidemic of syphilis happened during the Renaissance in 1495. Initially the plague broke out among the army of Charles the VIII after the French king invaded Naples. It then proceeded to devastate the continent.

“Syphilis was a major killer in Europe during the Renaissance,” said researcher George Armelagos, a skeletal biologist at Emory University in Atlanta.

Yes, millions of Injuns died from exposure to diseases brought by Europeans which the natives had no natural immunuity for.

However, it’s absurd to blame Columbus or any other Europeans for this for the simple fact that SOMEONE, if not the white man, was going to land in the Americas.

And had they been Asian, Arab, Polynesian etc. the result would have been the same: decimation of natives when their fragile immune systems became exposed to the newcomers and their diseases.

    • TeutonicKnight67

It’s not my fault that my forebears survived the Plague and therefore had stronger immune systems. It’s not my fault that whites coughed and sneezed on “native” amerinds and they died. We gave you smallpox and alcoholism, you gave us lung cancer and syphilis. Fair trade….you lost.

    • Pelayo

The old Spanish name for Syphilis was El Mal Francés.

  • RJSNS16

This is a repeat of a previous post on another article, but it fits here too.

    Here goes:

The evil men at the Frankfurt School (Marcuse, Adorno, Horkheimer, Greenberg, Gramsci, etc) were truly prophetic & planning DECADES ahead.

From their graves we whites can now hear them boasting, “Game, set, match…you lose!”

This Israeli terrible. I Jews can’t believe they’re so close to turning us into a menorah tee in America.

If the “Indigenous People” (which they’re not, because they’re just Orientals who crossed over on the Bering Strait when it was a land bridge – not to even mention the Kennewick Man), were so ‘amazing’ and ‘noble’ and such ‘fierce warriors’, then they would have defeated the Europeans and America (or whatever the hell it would have been called) would still be living in the stone age.

That’s the way it’s been throughout history. The strong defeat the weak. A bunch of idiot leftists don’t like that? Lump it.

    • NYB

The American aboriginals were not a unified people capable of decisive defense.

Because they were militarily irrelevant, they lost the land fair and square. Assimilation into the U.S. was their only option.

      • IstvanIN

Sad thing is we are no longer united and may end up losing as well, although perhaps so “fair and square”.

    • Pelayo

I was just about to say that. You beat me to it. Congrats. The problem is that it’s now happening to us most of whose ancestors weren’t even here when the injustices were perpetrated on the “Indians”.

  • Terry

A lot of nonsense here when you consider that white Europeans were actually the first people in North America. There is evidence that this is true in Central America and South America. White Europeans were in North America 6,000 years before the Indians came over through Alaska. So what does that mean?? Simple. White people are the Indigenous People in North America, not Indians. I suppose this could be the main reason why there is such a high suicide rate among the American Indians today. They found out that they are not the native American’s as they have been taught, but that white Europeans were. I guess that’s enough to put a bullet in your head.

Whenever a liberal wants to equate blacks with Whites, he has to trot out some sports statistics or something. Maybe lie about peanut butter being invented by a black (a common myth.) Or maybe, Maya Angelou can recite one of her moronic child rhymes like Muhammed Ali. With jews, you can always mention that they cured polio (yea), But with indians… well let’s see.. Okay, I have one– no wait, I thought I had one. There was that time that indian guy.. no wait, that was a japanese fellow. Oh nevermind.

    • Liberalsuck

If liberals felt they were equal to blacks, then they would live around them.

    • Crispus Attica

Why is a recipe(peanut butter) considered an invention? Who invented Hollandaise sauce?

  • PesachPatriot

I must confess I have always had a soft spot for the native amerindians…when I was a kid I enjoyed reading about famous Indian chiefs like the Cherokee Confederate general Stand Waitie, Tecumseh, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Chief Joseph, Quanah Parker, Osceola, Geronimo and many others. When I played cowboys and indians with my friends I always wanted to be the indian(even though my mom told me there were no jewish indian chiefs). Columbus definitely deserves his day for discovering the new world in 1492, but maybe another day could be american indian day. If the blacks can have an entire black history month as well as MLK day I don’t think an american indian day would be so terrible. They also gave us cool stuff like canoes and lacrosse(which I like a lot better than hoopties and basketball). Also, during the american revolution the colonists used the guerilla style of warfare common to the northeast woodland tribes…even the rebel yell was supposedly based off of the cherokee war cry.

As a final note I always tell people that the amerindians had a far worse time than the imported african slaves, yet no one ever sees comanches or sioux in war bonnets with tomahawks and bows and arrows rampaging through wal-mart and scalping the employees. No one worries about home invasions by seminoles or choctaws and I have yet to hear of mohawk or iroquois running illegal dog fighting operations. I would also feel much more comfortable living on a reservation anywhere in this country than in an urban public housing project.

A number of years ago, I had a Native American friend who stayed with me for a few months before returning to Canada. I was not a race realist at the time, but I remember how he used to complain of how lazy and dependent on Canada’s version of welfare the “indigenous” Indians were. The Natives apparently had their own reservation lands, but he told me they did nothing useful or productive with it. He said the vast majority of them were alcoholics, dumber than a bag of rocks, and they had great disgust for Whites in general. My Native friend who was a Christian and educated in a conservative Christian college, was surprisingly open in his contempt for his fellow Native Indians. He also admitted to me that most Natives would agree with him, but they would never admit it in the presence of Whites. He said the Natives play the White man for a sucker.

At the time, I found it interesting but nothing more than that. Now, as a much older White man who is realistic about racial matters, I know that what he told me was the truth. But I also know it’s not merely the Native Indians who play the White man as a “sucker,” but also the Blacks, Hispanics and every other so-called ‘minority.’

I had a pow-wow with Geronimo III once. He said pretty much the same thing. “The Cochise braves, they get their check every month from the Commissioner and don`t give a damn about the nation.” He himself, refused to live on the reservation. He made his money from tourist photo ops which is how I met him…

“Christopher Columbus has long been known as an admirable adventurer in
American lore whose adventurous spirit led him to “discover” America.”

Notice the mandatory scare quotes around discover. With the utmost snark, liberal writers love to point out that people were living on the American continents before Europeans got here. Of course, to that we reply that Europe was never “discovered” by Indians despite the fact the Atlantic is a two-way road.

Columbus is part of our history. We celebrate his legacy not because he was perfect–no men are–but because of his braveness, discoveries, and pioneer-spirit. As Americans we’re the children of descendents who braved the open waters and New World to make a better life for themselves and progeny. We forged west to conquer the unknown lands–to tame buffalo, mountains, and savage Indian all. Unless one’s idea of serene society is nomadic living war brutal warfare and scalping is common, I think every dirt-brained self-righteous liberal should spend each Oct 12th thinking about his ancestors–better men than he’ll ever be.

    • liberalsuck

The way to displace or take over a people is to make them ignorant of their history and to constantly make them feel sorry for others. Why do you think so many white people hate themselves, hate their ancestors and aren’t fighting tooth and nail to stop their displacement? What other race of people than whites would have no problem with their women sleeping nonwhite men? What other race than whites would allow their countries to be swamped with people who don’t look like them and full of people who hate them? What other race of people would sit there quietly has his taxes are used to foot the bill for other races of people to be irresponsible and to be criminals? I have doubts sometimes about our race rebounding and being strong again. I really do.

  • SmithandSmith

The only way to destroy White People is to destroy their Heritage, Traditions, Beliefs and Values.

They can’t beat us in War but they can beat us through manipulation and so far, they’re winning. I don’t know how they did it but they’ve gotten away with lying about us for a very long time now and have used it against us in order to make us turn against each other (wars, civil rights, “racism”, etc.) which in turn, would cost us our Rightful Place in this World. You might say, they placed their bets well…

I reckon the only thing people can do right now is to make sure their children know the truth. And when you can, make sure their friends know too. Parents can teach their kid’s friends through lackadaisical conversation.

    • Liberalsuck

Knowing the truth means nothing. I tell fellow whites unPC history about whites and bad things done to us by nonwhites that historians don’t tell, and it’s not a big deal to them. It’s almost like all I told them was the Pepsi-Coke challenge was in the 1980s and not the 1970s. It’s like, “Oh, ok. Whatever” with them. Some accuse me of promoting hate by pointing out things historians don’t talk about. Anti-white people and self-hating white people have no logic. You can’t reason with these people.

      • SmithandSmith

My personal view on those kinds of people is, you gotta leave them behind. I’m sorry about that but as far as I can see, it’s those kinds of people that you’re talking about that put us in this situation. A stupid hippy back then is the same as the politically correct white of today, both are evil and both seek to destroy you.

ASU? The only thing of note that alleged “university” produces are porn actresses.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Anglokraut Jacqueline Schumacher

Hahahaha! Oh man, you have no idea how good a laugh that was! People keep asking me “why don’t you apply to ASU? You have a guaranteed spot because you graduated from an Arizona community college, and you’re a member of Phi Theta Kappa.” To which I reply that if I have to go to a school in Arizona, it will be the University of Arizona, or nothing at all. The only thing at ASU that is a source of pride is their music department.

  • bigone4u

Today’s college students are the product of an educational system that has dumbed down everything. The students at ASU were probably responding to the biased teachings of their Marxist professors. I can forgive ignorant students their leftism since reality may bite them in the ass later on, but I cannot forgive university administrators who see to it that the alternative point of view, the traditional point of view, is not heard any more. If ASU is like parts of Texas, the students involved would be Hispanics, with a few white and black fellow travelers. There is no diversity of thought allowed on these types of public universities.

If you are a white person and live in the Southwest, leave. If you are a white person, move to the Northwest or the Midwest. Lots of conservative white people there, we dislike how the country is going, we hunt, we own firearms, we can sustain ourselves if something bad happened. Let the blacks and browns have the South and Southwest and let them kill each other.

  • falsedawn

How is it, indians get a bye for introducing tobbacco use to us poor unsuspecting White people?

  • TheCogitator

Never forget that the American Indians (or whatever you want to call them) were stone-age savages living without the wheel or metals. They were way behind the Europeans, just as the Africans were. It also seems that neither group has ever caught up, nor will they ever.

  • FourFooted_Messiah

Canada was based on treaties. If the Natives want to kick us out, they can. However, they should lose all benefits brought to them by whites, should they decide to do so. We should be alowed to raze all cities, and withhold all medicines should us whites be ordered back to Europe.

  • PesachPatriot

FFM…I don’t think you have to worry too much about the natives throwing the euro-canadians out…without you guys there would be no canadian bacon, labatts or tim hortons donut shops…Canada’s biggest problem is the fact that it is stuck directly adjacent to all of America’s socio-economic problems. Also, illegals from south of the us border will alway be ambitious enough to try and get through the US with its tough illegal immigation laws(even if not well enforced) and make it to your country which has even bigger freebies and give aways for gate crashers than ours.
