Study Suggests Humans Are Slowly But Surely Losing Intellectual and Emotional Abilities

Medical Xpress, November 12, 2012

Human intelligence and behavior require optimal functioning of a large number of genes, which requires enormous evolutionary pressures to maintain. A provocative hypothesis published in a recent set of Science and Society pieces published in the Cell Press journal Trends in Genetics suggests that we are losing our intellectual and emotional capabilities because the intricate web of genes endowing us with our brain power is particularly susceptible to mutations and that these mutations are not being selected against in our modern society.

“The development of our intellectual abilities and the optimization of thousands of intelligence genes probably occurred in relatively non-verbal, dispersed groups of peoples before our ancestors emerged from Africa,” says the papers’ author, Dr. Gerald Crabtree, of Stanford University. In this environment, intelligence was critical for survival, and there was likely to be immense selective pressure acting on the genes required for intellectual development, leading to a peak in human intelligence.

From that point, it’s likely that we began to slowly lose ground. With the development of agriculture, came urbanization, which may have weakened the power of selection to weed out mutations leading to intellectual disabilities. Based on calculations of the frequency with which deleterious mutations appear in the human genome and the assumption that 2000 to 5000 genes are required for intellectual ability, Dr. Crabtree estimates that within 3000 years (about 120 generations) we have all sustained two or more mutations harmful to our intellectual or emotional stability. Moreover, recent findings from neuroscience suggest that genes involved in brain function are uniquely susceptible to mutations. Dr. Crabtree argues that the combination of less selective pressure and the large number of easily affected genes is eroding our intellectual and emotional capabilities.

But not to worry. The loss is quite slow, and judging by society’s rapid pace of discovery and advancement, future technologies are bound to reveal solutions to the problem. “I think we will know each of the millions of human mutations that can compromise our intellectual function and how each of these mutations interact with each other and other processes as well as environmental influences,” says Dr. Crabtree. “At that time, we may be able to magically correct any mutation that has occurred in all cells of any organism at any developmental stage. Thus, the brutish process of natural selection will be unnecessary.”

The process isn’t quite so slow when it involves whites mating with blacks. Then you see much quicker results in dysgenics. Like, immediate. Of course, for any white to actually mate with a black, the process had already been started as far as the white was concerned. Only an idiot or a mental defective would find anything attractive about a black.

    • Formerly_Known_as_Whiteplight

You are forgetting about brainwashing. Big Sister has been telling the girls for decades what is attractive just as Big Brother made Winston Smith finally understand that 2+2=5.

I love to greet teenagers, including our local newspaper delivery boy, with a cheery ‘Good Morning’ just to provoke a reaction, any reaction, but apparently such a greeting is totally outwith their social norms and they simply do not know how to respond. I very much doubt if they have even minimal interaction in their own households, This explains a lot about their society and their lack of social responsibility.

  • JackKrak

Anecdotal evidence of this has been piling up for years in the pop culture and politics.
Just the other day, I found myself thinking about how not long ago, men wore suits to baseball games, “gay” and “marriage” were never even used in the same paragraph and the country was still years away from having its first metal detector installed in an elementary school.
Now, just popping into WalMart is a soul-destroying experience on too many levels to even contemplate, cities actually have to pass laws mandating that people wear their pants around their waists and “baby momma” is in the dictionary.
We’ve come a long way, baby.

    • Fr. John+

One standard deviation is all it takes. Lothrop Stoddard, Carleton Coon, and now, Avdeyev were not only correct in their assumptions, but downright prophetic (in a biblical sense)!

As far as emotional abilities, there should not be any worries…People use them as a substitute for rational thinking…

As for intellectual abilities…Seeing what comes out of our governmental school system ( K – Phd. ), definitely proves the thesis of the study…

“Magically correcting mutations” sounds like eugenics. Which is forbidden. I’ve found that one of the most popular smears by the unthinking is to say, “So and so favors eugenics!” They don’t seem to understand that the alternative is dysgenics.

  • anarchyst

Dysgenics has been going on for some time now. It is not a new phenomonen, but has accelerated since the late 1960s. A high-school education in the 1950s is equivalent to a college education today. Going further back, a better education was realized in the one-room schoolhouses than in the public (indoctrination) schools with their massive buildings and infrastructure. The “McGuffey Eclectic Readers” set was a staple in the one-room schoolhouses of the 19th and early 20th century. Most of today’s college “graduates” would have considerable difficulty with the last two volumes in the set. Yes, this set is still available from various sources and is worth obtaining.

    • Formerly_Known_as_Whiteplight

I know several people who graduated from high school in the late 1950s. I’m sorry, but they are NOT what you claim, in fact, they are incredibly ignorant and have a difficult time grasping science as well. Except for the Ivy league exceptions, that was the rule.

      • anarchyst

Of course, not all schools were “up to par” however, I stand by my assertion.
        Best regards,

        • Formerly_Known_as_Whiteplight

I have the feeling you weren’t around back then.

          • anarchyst

            Yes, I was “around” back then and received a first-rate education . . .
            Best regards,

          • Formerly_Known_as_Whiteplight

Oh, you are the example of the best of the ’50s education wise. I’ll keep that in mind.

My argument is that education is fine today, it is the way and what is applied that is the problem. But in the 50s, we had plenty of problems with delinquency, bad schools, students and especially teachers. It was bad enough to cause national concern beginning as far back as the WW2 years. There were even some famous films made on the themes.

          • EndTimesComing

You are either a teacher in current government indoctrination factories, or a student and likely not around in the 50’s yourself. I was. There is a HUGE difference between schools and society back then, and now. Huge. One example: if a fight broke out the teachers tried to identify who started the fight, and they knew who the bullies were. The one responsible got the punishment. Today, both bully and victim are punished under “zero tolerance” crap. Zero tolerance meaning teachers are clueless, lazy, and often not even watching their students as they were back then. And that’s a minor example. A major example? Segregated schools meant SAFE schools. No need for metal detectors.

          • Sloppo

I believe so-called “zero tolerance” policies regarding fighting actually tend to punish the victims much more than the bullies. Many bullies have no academic life to disrupt, so getting kicked out for a while generally doesn’t cramp their style very much. Victims who defend themselves are more likely to be students who want to learn. Many of them care about being in school and having a record without disciplinary blemishes.

          • VapidVienna

“My argument is that education is fine today, it is the way and what is applied that is the problem.”

Er, what you describe as ‘the way and what is applied’ is the whole of education. These two things constitute both what is taught and how. What remaining part of education do you feel is ‘fine’? The processors in the school computers? The brickwork of the buildings?

Richard Lynn’s nutshell summary of current dysgenic effects on intelligence

DYSGENICS — INTELLIGENCE — CAUSES OF DEGENERATION

    1) Relaxation of natural selection against those with low intelligence following the demographic transition [“Demographic transition” refers to the transition between the high birthrate/high mortality pre-industrial era, which was the more unforgiving towards low intelligence, into the low birthrate/low mortality characteristic of the industrial age.]

    2) Negative association of intelligence and fertility [Smarter adults tend to have fewer children.]

    3) Dysgenic immigration [replacing an intelligent population with a less intelligent population]

  • preparationHbomb

Well, I suspect it’s a tad more worrisome than this writer suggests. I’ve been in the substance abuse recovery field for over a quarter of a century, and what I’ve observed and learned during that time is, the legions of kids who have saturated their brain cells and body cells with ever-stronger drugs AND alcohol — have ALSO made fundamental mutations in their genes as a result. The children of these people, more often than not, have learning disorders, ADHD, compromised immune systems, bipolar and schizophrenic disorders — and on and on and on. This is not the FEW. It is, unfortunately, happening to the majority of the innocent children born of addict/alcoholics. I’m one myself, 27+ yrs sober; and I deliberately chose not to have children because I realized what would probably happen to my kid(s) as a direct result of my own drug and alcohol use. So this IS in fact a major problem for society, and I respectfully suggest that it’s about time it was taken seriously.

  • JohnEngelman

Dysgenics is a recent phenomenon that is coming to an end as Aid to Families with Dependent Children comes to an end.

Civilization has always placed selection pressure on high intelligence. Intelligent men became merchants, money lenders, government officials, and so on, and were more prolific. Computer technology reduces the economic value of jobs that can be learned by those of average and below average intelligence, while creating opportunities for geniuses to become rich.

It has never been more important than it is now to have a high IQ.

    • David Ashton

      Money-lenders, merchants, bureaucrats, super-rich…guess who?
Inventors, engineers, philosophers, composers, generals…guess who?
      Engelman, your gaberdine is showing.

(Note to my Judeo-Chinaman friends, just a joke.)

      • JohnEngelman

You do not seem to get my point. Since the beginning of civilization superior intelligence has enhanced a man’s ability to have children who survived and reproduced. Consequently, civilization does not inhibit human evolution; it accelerates it.

We should not allow the welfare system cloud our perception of that fact. During most of history the equivalent of the unmarried crack addicted welfare mother with five illegitimate children by five different men died of malnutrition and disease. So did her illegitimate children. The equivalent of the student with perfect SAT scores and straight A’s had children he was able to provide well for, so they perpetuated his good genes.

        • David Ashton

As an old friend of the ex-communist and eugenicist Nathaniel Weyl, I have long been aware of (for example) the comparative genetic consequences of marriage in rabbinical circles and the celibacy of priests. You do not seem to get my joke about your particular choice of high-IQ achievers. Have a look at the on-line writings of another Jewish eugenicist John Glad.
The case can be made that some civilizations have declined partly because high achievers become disinclined through luxury to have (enough) children and/or sustain the feckless breeders either as inexpensive servants or as objects of misplaced kindly welfare. Frankly I cannot be bothered to dig out academic references on this since you have simply ignored those I and others provided on “Cultural Marxism” and the New Left infiltration of “higher” education in the USA, UK &c. Of course, modern technology transforms the prospective circumstances in directions different from those of the ancient world, but these posts are not the best place to spell out the complex possible interactive variables.
Voting for the Democrats is not a eugenic act.

          • JohnEngelman

            David Ashton,

My explanation of how civilization speeds human evolution comes from “The 10,000 Year Explosion: How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution,” by Utah professors Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending.

            http://www.amren.com/ar/2009/05/index.html#article1

When explaining the fall of the Roman Empire, we should remember that the Eastern Roman Empire, which came to be known as the Byzantine Empire, lasted until 1453. The Holy Roman Empire, which may be seen as a restoration of the Western Roman Empire, lasted until 1806.

When explaining the fall of the Western Roman Empire, which fell in 476, many blame what they do not like for other reasons. Evangelical Christians blame Roman paganism and decadence, while forgetting that Christianity became the established religion of the Empire in 380.

In his “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” published from 1776 to 1781 Edward Gibbon blamed Christianity.

You blame the decline on a disinclination by high achievers to have children. Others have blamed the welfare system. Unemployed inhabitants of the Empire were subsidized by the government.

I blame the fact that there were so many unemployed inhabitants of the Empire. Because Rome was frequently at war, the Empire was glutted with slaves. Farmers who could not afford to buy slaves could not compete with farmers who could. These lost their farms to slave owning farmers, and moved to the cities, where they could not find jobs, again because of slavery.

Most Americans think one gets rich through socially useful achievements. In a stagnant economy one gets rich by making others poor.

Those without property and prospects had little inclination to protect the Western Roman Empire from invaders.

In the Byzantine Empire family farms were protected economically by the government, in return for military service. The Byzantine Empire, and the Holy Roman Empire were thoroughly Christian, so I do not believe that Christianity was a factor in the decline and fall of Rome.

          • David Ashton

I said “partly” as I do not believe in single causes, and did not have only the Roman Empire in mind. Without bothering to go to my library I will simply say that to my recollection, Edward Gibbon (like Arther Ferrill) noted a breakdown in expensive external and internal defense, a suppression of the middle classes while the rich pursued a life of luxury, and the alienation of expensive bureaucracy from the life of the people. Various scholars in the past have suggested dysgenic breeding factors. Sometimes symptoms and causes can be confused in these matters, or are symbiotic. More later, if you wish to continue this debate.

          • JohnEngelman

Chinese civilization survived civil wars and foreign conquest because while dynasties rose and fell, the ruling elite was determined by a competitive exam that was open to all males regardless of social origins, and which was won by the most intelligent. Those who won entered the Scholar Gentry. They were given generous incomes, and expected to have several wives and many children.

That is why the Chinese have high average IQs everywhere they live, and why Chinese students in the United States dominate our best universities. That is also why I expect China to dominate the world by the end of this century, if not much sooner.

          • David Ashton

It would be a good idea if the West emulated the Chinese example you cite.

          • JohnEngelman

We used to, sort of, with Civil Service exams. Now blacks get extra points.

I am all for blacks getting opportunities if they measure up, but not if they don’t.

          • David Ashton

We had grammar schools in Britain. I should suppose the Chinese exams for imperial administration were more academically narrow than our exams, and than the flexible intellectual environment that characterized our selective schools, before they were almost all abolished, and our universities before Cultural Marxists introduced their own ideological muck and limitations.
(My daughter as I write has just turned up with some drama readings required for theater work in London; “They’re all left-wing, Dad,” she says, “The plays, the teachers, all my ‘friends’ – you’re expected to do stuff on women’s issues, racism….”.)
The rigidity of the Chinese exam system has been said to hold the Chinese back from the sort of intellectual explosion that characterized the west.
I am skeptical about the IQ sampling of the Chinese population by Lynn and Rushton.
When I have time to go through my library on the decline of nations, I shall put further comments on the decline of the western Roman empire.

          • JohnEngelman

            David Ashton,

Here is a website that briefly describes the Imperial Exams.

            http://www.csupomona.edu/~plin/ls201/confucian3.html

The exams were based on Confucian classics, rather than mathematics and the hard sciences. This became a liability in competing with the West after the Renaissance. Nevertheless, during most of the nearly two thousand years that the exams were held wealth and prestige in the West was based mainly on the ownership of land. This restricted upward social mobility based on intelligence.

The Imperial Exam system meant that for nearly two thousand years government officials in China were more capable than anywhere else in the world. They also meant that men with of superior intelligence had more children than other men, so the Chinese population was selected for superior intelligence to a greater extent than any other population but Ashkenazi Jews.

In the United States Chinese Americans and Chinese immigrants perform better on all the mental aptitude tests however they are designed than other racial groups, except in reading – English is often not their first language – and except for Ashkenazi Jews.

The following websites demonstrate high test scores for all Asians on the two mental aptitude tests that in the United States age given to student who want to go to college.

            http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=171http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=171

            http://www.blackexcel.org/06-sat-act-scores-by-race-ethnicity.htm

I see no reason to doubt that the Chinese are a biologically superior racial group, second only to Azhkenazi Jews.

          • David Ashton

The important thing is that the wise and clever have relatively more children than the stupid and incompetent.

          • David Ashton

I make no comment on Christianity and the “fall of Rome”. I have had time only to consult mainly Wikipedia, and my old schoolbook Cary’s “History of Rome” which considered various (now unfashionable) dysgenic factors, including birth-rate decline at the top and/or “proles” race-mixture below. These latter, basic explanations were supported by Otto Seeck, Tenney Frank, Martin Nilsson, Hans Guenther, Paul Colinvaux, etc. Michael Grant and Andrew Dalby have documented the social decadence.
            Present-day comparisons:
            (1) “A falling [Roman] birth rate did not preclude excessive demands from an ever-expanding migrant populace…. The multiplicity of subject peoples which expansion had incorporated into the Roman state, and in particular into the Roman army, increasingly demanded recognition for their indigenous cults, while the secularized Roman intelligentsia had little loyalty to their own traditional religion.” – Anne Glynn-Jones, “Holding Up a Mirror” (1996) p.146.
            (2) “When you reflect on what caused the fall of ancient Rome, such fears appear not altogether fanciful. Economic crisis; epidemics; immigrants overrunning the imperial borders; the rise of a rival empire in the East; terror. What one historian called ‘the end of civilization’ came within the span of a single generation. Could our own collapse with equal suddenness? No civilization has done a better job of finding and educating the geniuses in the right-hand tail of the distribution of talent. Maybe the real threat is posed not by the rise of China, Islam or CO2 emissions, but by our own loss of faith in the civilization we inherited from our ancestors.” – Niall Ferguson, “Civilization” (2012), pp.258,292,324-5 (condensed without ellipsis).

  • Sherman_McCoy

I can’t speak for the rest of humankind, but I’ve noticed that the older I get, the less sharp my wit becomes, and the more “diversity” and its effects I experience, the less I give a rat’s.

No! The concept, “Survival of the fittest”, is a definition of fitness, or in neo-Darwinism genetic survival. If capabilities, mental, physical, or behaviorial are not necessary in a given environment, are not selected for. If they have non-negligable costs, they are selected against.

The brain is a complex organ, expensive to build and maintain. If less mental capacity is needed for a species to survive in a given environment, smaller brained members will have a genetic survival advantage. Likewise if there is a reproductive advantage in other capacities being larger, these parts will be selected for.

    • Indiana Guy

what utter nonsense”expensive to build and maintain”. Sorry, this just isn’t true, it is not any more expensive to raise a smart person than an idiot. They do not require more calories nor more protean.

      • Shawn_thefemale

        What is protean?

  • George

This guy is saying intelligence peaked before we left Africa? Before various climates caused vast differences in intelligence? Before generations of folks living in England slowly increased in intelligence until the industrial revolution? Before several generations of European Jews slowly increased their IQ do to self selective breeding?

    Uh, yea.

  • Howard W. Campbell

Idiocracy & The Marching Morons are coming a lot faster than most people think. Just watch the movie (Idiocracy) and then scan around a few cable channels. A lot of those shows are not far off the mark from the TV shows in Idiocracy. As for “The Marching Morons”, it is amazing how many people one reasonably intelligent white or asian man supports through various welfare schemes.

  • handyandy2@optonline.net

While I agree that the intellect of our people is going down I don’t think that’s the real problem. The problem with most of our people is they’re morally deficient. You don’t have to be smart to be a moral person. All you have to do is live correctly. Just walk around and look so many of our people. They’re communicating to you through their posture, clothing, speech, overall unawareness of their surroundings, severely overweight/nderweight, weak, emasculated, unGodly behavior, cowardice, etc. that when the showdown comes, they’ll be the first slaughtered.
With our adversaries, it’s also not a case of intellect with them. They’re intellectually inferior and amoral. This works in some ways to their advantaage. They will have nothing stopping them from the worst outrages.

  • David Ashton

Yeah, man, I woz like totally freaked out by wot you bin sayin, fukkin awesome, nome sane?

  • Bob

I don’t believe a thing said by any “evolutionist” that doesn’t discuss the lesser intelligence of blacks, the drone-like herd mentality and lack of creativity of Asians, the horrible inbreeding of Arab Muslims…and white Wal-Mart shoppers. Then throw in public schooling.

When they start looking at white home-schooled kids not raised on Sugar Bombs, then I’ll pay attention.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/LVLO4JE5T2UU76PRBNJK4LD7QU John

“the drone-like herd mentality and lack of creativity of Asians”
This seems pretty moronic to me. Is having a “drone-like herd mentality” really all that bad. As for “lack of creativity,” see all the inventions that Asians have created over the past few millenium. After all, what is “creativity?” To me it seems like just a nice person subsitution for intelligence. Oh, danny has an IQ of 70, but look at this drawing he made, he is “creative.” Look at the gansta rap Darnell came up with. I mean, so creative you know. After all, blacks may suck at math but they are creative as there is no metric to measure it.

As one who spent his entire career in higher education, I can
attest that students are, on average, less prepared and less informed than
previous generations. The level of scholarship among academics has also
declined. Many professors educated in the 1950s and 1940s were real scholars
with a firm grounding in the classics of Western Civilization. It was a real
pleasure to work with these old scholars, no matter what their political
persuasion. Today, too many professors, outside engineering and the sciences,
are narrow specialists and former sixties radicals. The dummying down of academia
for the sake of minority self-esteem and increased enrollment, without regard
to academic qualifications, has all but destroyed contemporary Liberal Arts
    education.

smarter/richer people had more surviving kids than dumb people did up till about late 1800s or early 1900s. since then it flattened out then reversed.

  • FourFooted_Messiah

Evolution never meant “progress” – it only ever meant “change”, a point many people overlook or gloss over … and not all change is good.

I’ve been saying for years that the human genome is heading into the toilet, because of technology coupled with mushy-headed feelings (we even allow people with Down’s Syndrome to mate now).

Human genetics have probably been garbage for a long time. We discourage matings between close relatives (cousins) because it leads to detrimental mutations in one generation (mutant monsters and those with the intellect of apes) – witness the British NHS and its problems with Pakistanis marrying their cousins. Meanwhile, other species are more resilient – you can close-relative mate them two or three times before disasters start happening.

We have, in our glory, set ourselves up for our own extinction.

It seems that if whole groups of populations that are less likely to survive on their own are not only given hand-outs to survive, but encouraged to have more children so that they qualify for more handouts, that that could affect the gene pool.

Also, we don’t know if GMO foods, chemicals used in agriculture and industry, and other more recent toxins cause genetic mutations or not. There certainly (to me) seems a link between vaccines and autism.

Alex Jones has a video called, “America — Destroyed by Design!”. A weak, stupid population is far easier to mind control and manipulate than an intelligent one. It’s why the schools are dumbed down, there is little action to stem the tide of illegal immigration, fluoride is still added to drinking water, and most parents are led to believe vaccines are “safe, effective, and mandatory”.

This is just another useless academic trying to invent a research issue or something to justify his salary. There simply is no basis at all for any of his claims. There is no data about intelligence or emotional abilities that goes back hundreds, let alone thousands of years. There is not even a definition of what an “emotional ability” is. What does that even mean? What data there has been, in the form of IQ tests, has shown that IQ’s amongst whites have actually been rising over the past several decades.

    (1) Intelligence genes are necessary to create civilizations, but “civilization” does not necessarily create intelligence genes.

    (2) See my brief replies to John Engelman on ancient Rome towards the end of these posted comments.

    (3) On modern China, Prof.Louise Higgins (Galton Institute, 2006) estimated ten million children with IQs over 130 and 5,390,000 with IQs below 70. Western policy should in my view be directed to encouraging the propagation our own intellectual creativity rather than to admitting legally or illegally Chinese with their own cultural heritage, outlook and temperament. Beijing policy swings, from a dysgenic “cultural revolution” to strict reproductive regulations, indicate an attitude to state-governance alien to US norms. Worth reading are Frank Dikotter’s books on Mao’s murderous man-made famine, and on Han “racism” and “eugenics”.

    Doesn’t surprise me.

On top of breeding with non-whites, our society is continuously dumbed down. The arts (except for finger painting nonsense), reading, science, philosophy, etc are all heavily discouraged.

We whites MUST have a cultural renaissance if we are to survive. Even though we are surrounded by enemies, we must cultivate our intelligence. Every white should at least read some of the great Western classics. We need to educate ourselves, free ourselves from the shackles of ignorance that anti-white criminals use against us.

Humanity is getting dumber, but our modern comforts that prevent evolution from happening will vanish one day.

The authors definition of dysgenics here is probrably the best we can hope for in a mainstream journal. According to him we are expierencing emotional and intellectual decline because nature no longer roots out mutations that negativly impact our intelligence. It would be a lot more convincing, however, if it identified a facotr that multiplies this effect, that these mutations are actually beneficial in our society and will lead to the carrier reproducing more.
