Study Shows Surge of Bad Disease Genes in European

A scan of all the mutations in the human gene map shows something surprising—people of European descent are evolving fast, and not for the better.

The study finds that in the past 5,000 years, European-Americans have developed a huge batch of potentially harmful genetic mutations—many more than African-Americans.

The study, published in the journal Nature, may help explain why so many people develop diseases even though they don’t have common genetic mutations. It can also help explain why different people have so many different reactions to the same drug, said Joshua Akey of the University of Washington in Seattle who led the study.

It likely has to do with population explosion, Akey said. European populations expanded after the Ice Age ended and prosperous agricultural societies emerged. “The number of mutations that exist is directly attributable to the population growth that happened in the last 5,000 years,” Akey told NBC News.

Akey and colleagues at genetics institutions across the country examined the gene sequences of more than 6,500 people—more than 4,200 European-Americans and 2,200 African-Americans. {snip}

They found “an enormous excess of rare variants” in the European-Americans. And 73 percent of these mutations only appeared in the human genome in the past 5,000 to 10,000 years. Most were mutations that are known to weaken proteins, Akey said, and most of these harmful mutations were also in the people of European descent.

Now researchers are working to see which of these mutations might be associated with diseases. But many are in known disease-causing genes, such as the LAMC1 gene associated with premature ovarian failure, LRP1, which is linked with both Alzheimer’s disease and obesity and the CPE gene linked to hardening of the arteries.

It may explain why it’s been so hard to find clear genetic links to many diseases. “We have been looking for disease risk where it isn’t,’ he said. “The last five to 10 years have been dominated by looking for common genetic variations that dominate common diseases. There is a lot of disease risk that is unexplained. Maybe there are classes of mutations that haven’t been looked at.”

Genetic mutations usually occur by accident—they are just mistakes that get made when DNA gets copied. They become important to evolution when they affect a person’s ability to survive and have children. The expansion of civilization, and the ability of societies to care for people who are less fit, was probably a factor in allowing these mutations to spring up, Akey said. “I think that is undoubtedly true,” he said.

    This sounds like nonsense. The back plague wiped out a good portion of the weak genes. Europeans with A+ blood have the best health out of all racial groups (when you remove the stress caused be anti-white racism).

      Also, a series disastrous wars in the last century, from 1914 to the present have destroyed a huge gene pool from the very fittest of our young men.This combined with high tech medicine and family planning really means that the concept of survival of the fittest no longer applies to the white race. In the mean time the population in the 3rd world continues to explode despite huge infant mortality numbers, poor nutrition and poor medical services. This really is survival of the fittest. In other words the above article is really quite inconclusive and almost pointless.

        To add to this, “fit” is a relative term, one that relies on a variety of factors. A creature that may be perfectly fit for one environment may fail in another (for example, a polar bear in the tropics, or an African elephant in the high temperates.) Being “fit” for siviving to breeding age can mean a lot of different things, depending on circumstance.

        What does a human need to have in order to survive in modern Western society? Intelligence – which itself comes in many flavours. It can mean anything from the analytical sort of intelligence which requires one to be good at democratic politics, or to run a business, or to be a scientist, to the sort of cleverness it takes to take advantage of the system legally, or to be an outright successful criminal who rarely, if ever, gets caught, and then very rarely for anything serious.

        However, we also make sure our genetically mentally incompetent not only survive, but that they also have the right to breed/to be born in the first place.

        It also means a mind-set which is quite passive and non-violent in nature. We can wave signs around if we don’t like something, but we (rightly) balk at causing damage or death just to make our points heard.

        What does one need to have in order to survive in a third world society? Toughness, determination, and a sort of ethos which says “me and mine and everyone else can go to hell” mentality. While the West could use at least a little of that, it tends to breed a culture of deceipt, a kleptocracy, something you would find in Muslim countries and tribalistic areas of Africa.

        What would be the kind of human to survive a global apocalypse in which all technology (and most of the knowledge needed to rebuild it) was lost? See the paragraph immediately above.

          Agree with what you have said, for instance if I suddenly found myself alone in the Australian outback without my hi-tech support systems i would certainly die within days. The “primitive” Aboriginal would survive, as simple as that. But I still feel that in the event of the Apocalypse (True meaning of word is revelation) I feel white technical civilization would rebuild itself, But I also agree with you that our same advanced hi-tech society is breeding a useless generation as well.

            Civilizational apocalypse comes in many forms – “the end of the world” doesn’t really mean the end of life on Earth, it just means the end of civilization as we know it.

            However, no matter how it falls, the only way it (technological Western civilization) can be resurrected is if someone out there is smart enough to be like the monks of old, transcribing Alexandrine/Byzantine documents and hiding them where the enemies of knowledge can’t destroy them.

            Is there anyone out there doing this? Or are we simply hoping that the sheer number of copies extant already will ensure that our knowledge is saved?

            As for youngsters today, well, they seem to think they are entitled to instant managerial positions just because they have a Gr 12 Diploma. It’s not really their fault, it’s what the “stay in school” crowd basically promises them. Also, they seem to get the impression that manual labour is a thing of the past, and are shocked, shocked I say, if they find themselves expected to handle a shovel or a pick. They have been conditioned to think they already live in George Jetson’s push-button universe; no wonder they have problems when they discover reality ain’t what they’ve been led to believe it is.

I try to fool myself into thinking I’ll read them “some day” but I think the real reason I do it is because I fear that if the world turns to the proverbial then I hope I’ll end up as the monk in A Canticle for Leibowitz, not the “Simpletons” trying to kill him.

      The only alleles which would’ve been selected for during the plagues would be any that confer resistance to…plague. There are no “weak” genes. It is known that there is a gene associated with intelligence which is also associated with nearsigtedness, for example.

      The issue of genes associated with these current disorders could have to do with promoting survival in the very different environment of Europe 7000 years ago. It is a complicated issue and it may well be that alleles which conferred say, intelligence or cooperative attitude or accuracy in flintknapping even may have been selected but ALSO have detrimental effects as well- but less lethal than the alternatives. People typically did not live long enough in that period to suffer from Alzheimers disease or atherosclerosis and in this age, it becomes a problem. It is known that there is a gene associated with intelligence which is also associated with nearsigtedness, for example.

      Blood type has not been demonstrated to have any causal relationship with “health” ; this is akin to astrology.

      A high proportion of Blackfeet Indians and Australian abos are type A. Japanese are mostly type “O” and are renown for long lifespan.

    High levels of infant mortality are selective. It is the reproductive period and pattern that is decisive. Western science leads in medical treatment but not in humanitarian eugenics. Also, the mutated superbug problem deserves prompt attention.

If some study said negative things about other groups, it would A, not be printed, B, be doctored, or C, be qualified and assessed for us* so that nothing racist could possibly be interpreted, no matter how sensible or even obvious a “racist” interpretation might be, and indeed at last, no sense could possibly be made out of it at all. E.g.: “but scientists insist that these traits are really evolutionarily neutral and in fact, likely important for survival in the specific region the separate groups evolved in” or “but beauty and intelligence are not absolute advantages; instead they are subject to cultural views, individual values, and vary from place to place, time to time, and society to society”… or something like that. I think you get the point. Only when it undermines the possibility of white genetic advantages or endowments is it acceptable.

      Sarcasm noted. Yes, the author fails to mention that more blacks are hurt by bad genes than whites are, that is when you factor in the sickle cell gene. Then there are the genes that make them susceptible to sudden cardiac death on the bakbaball court. Then there are the genes that make almost all of them develop high blood pressure and other such health issues.a

        Two copies of the sickle-cell gene causes sickle-cell anemia, and a high likelihood of premature death. One copy, however, protects against malaria. This trait was an evolutionary trade-off that served Africans, and other groups in similar tropical climates, quite well. Likewise, many of the mutations discussed in this article might have been part of similar types of trade-offs, rather than just randomly bad mutations. Jews, for instance, suffer very high levels of many rare brain diseases– which is undoubtedly an evolutionary trade-off for the Ashkenazi Jews’ raised I.Q. distribution, which is usually estimated to be at one-half to one full standard deviation above the mean for gentiles.

    Here’s the thing about “Bad Disease Genes” – in certain circumstances these genes can have an advantage. All humans have pairs of genes (we have 23 pair of chromosomes) – similar but not necessarily identical. If someone, say a black person, has both pairs of genes for Sickle Cell Anemia, then this is very bad. However, if just one of the pair of genes is for sickle cell anemia, then this black person is resistant to malaria. This is called “heterozygote” advantage.

    Now, Europeans have been evolving like crazy (as opposed to blacks – very little change from their primitive ancestors). This may have generated bad gene effects if both pairs of genes are bad. BUT! if only one of the pair is bad, then this may confer a “heterozygote”
    advantage.

    Consider the Ashkenazi Jews (the Jews of Europe) – they have the highest IQ of any ethnic group known. They average around 112-115, well above the European norm of 100. However, associated with the European Jews are a number of “Bad Disease Genes” such as Tay-Sachs disease, Gaucher’s disease, the breast cancer mutations BRCA1 and BRCA2, Nieman-Pick disease, etc. They are unusually common among the European
    Jews (1 in 25 European Jews carry a copy of Tay Sachs gene which kills if both
    pairs of genes (on the pairs of chromosomes) are actually on both chromosomes).

    Why are these genes so common? The speculation is that having JUST ONE COPY
    of the gene is advantageous! The notion is these mutations effect the development of the nervous system (they are what is termed sphingolipid mutations – a class of modified fat molecules that play a role in neural signal transmission). Thus, one copy leads to increased neural function and high IQ. Two copies lead to disease and death. However, the selection pressure for high IQ was so great that this trait was selected for.

    Europeans may have more “bad genes” but this is simply a reflection of the enormous selection pressure that was shaping the European blood line – pressures that were completely absent in Africa.

    We have changed and evolved and ADVANCED! The African blacks have been left
    behind. Of course, our European change has a down-side. More disease if both pairs
    of genes happen to come together. This is the price we pay for our evolving to meet the challenges of the Northern European environment. The price we pay for being a SUPERIOR RACE.

      Even at a popular level Genetics must be an exceptionally complex subject, well beyond the scope of the average Amren post but Dr Don Dexter’s post above does make interesting reading. If posts like this are genuinely factual, easy to understand and support our concerns then they should be encouraged.

      I’ve heard that the Tay Sachs gene also is suspected of giving people a partial immunity to some disease, I can’t remember if it tuberculosis or typhus.

    As far as the dysgenics of health is concerned, he argued that the causes of degeneration were first of all the relaxation of natural selection against those with poor health. These were attributable, he thought, to improvements in public health, particularly the provision of pure drinking water and efficient sanitation. The effect of this was that many children survived who would previously have died.

    Subsequently, it has been noted that medical improvements have increased genetic deterioration for health, and these consist firstly of surgical interventions which have preserved the lives of those who would otherwise have died and enabled them to transmit their genes to later generations. The first of these was retinoblastoma, a hereditary cancer of the eye.

    An American surgeon handled this problem in the first decade of the 20th century by removing the eyes of the affected patient. This cured the cancer. It was not able to spread to other parts of the body and enabled the person — although they were now blind — to survive into adulthood and to have children, thereby perpetuating the gene.

    Secondly, later in the 20th century, antibiotics also had a dysgenic effect. For instance, the commonest genetic disorder in the European population is cystic fibrosis. Those born with this condition formerly used to die quite early in life, in childhood or early adolescence, but today they can survive — thanks to antibiotics — to early thirties or even early forties, enabling them to have children and transmit the genes.

      You are correct in stating that social development (health systems, transmission of ameliorative strategies etc.) has promoted the incidence of certain genetic-linked illnesses. HOWEVER, in both retinoblastoma and C.F. spontaneous mutations arise with a significant, known (but forgotten to me) frequency in a population regardless of heredity so these will not be extinguished even with perfect genetic planning. DNA replication errors (for us) in general occur in about 1 in 10^7 replication events but fortunately most are silent, or at least, fatal.

      Mutations are a two-edged sword and we are stuck with ‘em and to some unpreventable degree, the accompanying deficits.

          I am certain that he (Lynn) cannot be unaware of the general concept, perhaps even these particular disorders. I also assume that his *major* point is that we are *exacerbating* the problem, with which I would agree. I am just adding a caveat that no amount of social planning will end these genetic events as the very fact of spontaneous mutation is what makes us different than those yet stuck in the stone-age.

          In the past, my son might have died because of complications of pregnancy necessitating caesarean birth and was born prematurely. Now, he is a fine young man in highschool and at the top of his school academically and also an essential element teaching in our children’s ministry at church. He is not some dysfunctional welfare case. Does he carry some allele which may cause a daughter in the future to suffer the same birth difficulty? It may be but I think that the benefits outweigh the costs.

          It is difficult not to be sympathetic to parent in other countries who wants to save their child -I completely empathize with them, but it has always troubled me that they will import some poor case from a third-world wasteland and perform some extraordinary 14 hour surgery at a cost of $300,000 for a child who will not likely grow to adulthood. This is morally very conflicting.

          The point I think, to be remembered, is that this is a blessing with a curse and with the falling white replacement rate, I for one am glad for those who can survive to go on and improve the face of America.

    There is a better way of looking at any surge in any particular disease. Have you ever noticed birds that gather in a huge flock, they swirl around form a very dense group that is held for a few moments then is goes into dissipation. They swirl around again and form a tight group again and again before totally flying away to get on with their own business. Genes are just like that at any one time in a stable population. Certain genes of a particular type, group become dominant within that population then over time dissipate, at any one time there more people with Blond hair and Blue eyes, that over time changers to Brown hair, you get majority tall people that also changers to not so tall, you get at times a group of people within a population that are very intelligent,[ Geniuses] , they push knowledge forward, they also dissipate and so it goes on and on. This mechanism that forms tight groups that dissipate is working in every thing you can think of, it is part of Nature,=disease, genes, Tall, short, Fat, Thin,Thick, intelligent,Football results,Rockets to the Moon on and on, so don’t worry.

    I think it is just noise from the researchers who wants more money to research genetics. Today, when there are no progress on solving diseases, the genetic cause has become a sleeping pillow for clueless health personnel and their clients. Because genetics clearly are the reason of some diseases, people can be lead to believe that there are many more diseases which have it as cause, and then they will accept to eat controlling medication for the rest of their lives.
    Take control of your own health, get informed, read pages like “what the doctors will not tell you” and much more. Our geniuses have been at work and they have solved most things, and they are not referred to by people who will lose money on not sold drugs. You must find it on your own.
