Far-Right Belgian Party Launches Website to Report Illegal Migrants

Radio Free Europe, April 10, 2012

A far-right Belgian political party has launched a website inviting people to report crimes allegedly committed by illegal immigrants.

The website launched by the Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) party allows people to file anonymous tip-offs on social security fraud, work on the black market, and more serious crimes.

Vlaams Belang politician Filip Dewinter, a member of the regional parliament in Belgium’s Dutch-speaking region of Flanders, said the initiative was needed because of the “tens of thousands of illegal immigrants” in Belgium.

Antiracism activists compared the initiative to Nazi tactics.

The Vlaams Belang website mirrors a website launched earlier by the right-wing Party for Freedom in the Netherlands that asked people to report job losses or crime linked to immigrants from central and eastern EU nations.

EU officials and lawmakers have condemned the Dutch initiative.
