Barbie from the block got mixed reviews Wednesday from city girls inspecting the newest spin on the old-school toy.
“So In Style” dolls, a fresh take on the black Barbie, hit store shelves this week, featuring a group of plastic friends sporting shiny bling, big earrings and fancy sneakers.

Tyaine Danclaire, 15, of the Bronx, liked Trichelle’s straight, long hair because it looked like “a weave,” but she thought the idea “was sorta racist.” [Trichelle is one of the three “Barbie” dolls coming out this week. —ed.]
“They say black girls are ghetto with the gold earrings, with the big bling; I don’t agree with that,” she said.

The new $30.99 dolls have “authentic-looking facial features” such as fuller lips, a wider nose . . . and curlier hair,” Mattel said.

Nikki Wright, 12, of East Harlem, showed off her braided hair extensions and gold hoops in her ears while holding a Trichelle doll.
“They look like people where we live,” the seventh-grader said. “I wear big earrings. The weave. Things that we use.”

I’m under the opinion that all Barbie Dolls are hideous, but that’s beside the point. It’s a case of derned if you do, derned if you don’t, derned if you kind of do. If Mattell hadn’t made a black barbie, the NAACP et al. would be up in arms for “whitewashing the toy section”. If they didn’t make the new Barbie a ghetto dweller, she wouldn’t be “authentic”. However, this sort of authentic doll is “reinforcing negative stereotypes”. I’d hate to be trying to run a business right now. There’s no way to win.
Seems to me that the 30,000,000 plus Africans in this country should be able to come up with something on their own instead of complaining about what “Whitey” isn’t doing for them.
>>> but she thought the idea “was sorta racist.”
Wow.
It’s a doll that actually caters TO her demographic and she STILL thinks it’s “racist”. You simply cannot make these people happy. Or actually, this is just more proof that the word “racist” has lost all it’s meaning due to over-use and mis-use.
But in any event, at least Mattel made a highly authentic doll….down to the made up cartoon name. “Trichelle” indeed…
Kinda racist? Boy they teach them young!
I thought that if black kids had dolls that looked like them then it would raise their self esteem? Has anyone seen the Bratz dolls? They look like hookers to me and my husband and I will not allow them or their images in our house.
Yet another in an endless stream of examples of how dealing with blacks is a lose-lose proposition.
They complain about not being represented but when they are represented with identifiable attributes, it becomes racism.
When dealing with blacks, you can’t win or break even.
Many blacks are going to be disappointed this X-Mass because most black kids get their gifts from charities. Whites will pick the black dolls, thinking that is what they would want.
If the doll was as black as say, Grace Jones, and had either a big afro, or dreadlocks, no matter what you did, it will still be considered a racial stereotype. And if the clothes were racy, ditto, and if the clothes were not racy, then the kids wouldn’t want them. Seems you just can’t please a group of people who have fallen into a habitual habit of whining. No matter what anybody says or does, it is never right or good enough. Just ask Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, professional whiners par excellence!
The facial features in this picture don’t look very black to me. The hair is “White” and the complexion is Mexican. One of the accessories I saw in the video was a violin???!!!! Don’t make me laugh. All the black girls they were interviewing were overweight and coal black and they’re saying they’re glad they have a doll that looks like them? I don’t get it.
Most of the girls in the video looked quite a bit too old to be playing with dolls. I think by the time that I was about 13 I felt that I was way too old to actually play with the dolls, I had them as collectibles by then. The newer Barbie and other of the “fashion” type dolls (black or White) are pretty skanky looking and not really something I would want my daughter to have anything to do with.
The Ghetto Barbie comes already pregnant and showing. She also has 6 little children of different complexion. There is a wallet that contains several voter registration cards, ACORN membership card, food stamps, a WIN check, a Section 8 housing certificate and a free government prepaid cell phone.
Ghetto Barbie will soon have a companion doll named Hussain as soon as this doll gets parolled. Hussain will come with a hand gun, several voter registration cards, ACORN membership card, drug paraphanellia (fake of course), food stamps, a WIN check, Section 8 housing certificate and free government prepaid cell phone. When picked up, Hussain’s internal solar cell powered voice sythesizer will loudly express nasty ghetto four letter words and threats.
Just how many Black women named “Barbie” or(Barbara) have you met in your life anyway? Another White item that must be “Afrified!”
Then, of course, there is this nonsense about a “weave.” Here again, Blacks must symbolically reinvent White things as being something of their. To the rest of civilization, a “weave” as Blacks call it, is and has been forever a wig.
Pair three successive generations of nordic, celtic or germanic women with black men and voila, there you have it, the next black barbie. Seriously, is everyone so deluded that they can’t see that the evolution of the new black hybrid race is taking place through the lascivious ways of the modern western white woman.
She’s cute. I loved Barbies. I bought them for my daughter and now I buy them for my granddaughter. The are also low cost, even those princess Barbies with the big gowns.
Complain, complain, complain typical!
The best thing about Barbies and the fact that they are the all time best selling doll ever is that the feminazis hate them. And Barbies are the one thing the feminazis have not been able to ban.
So if you feel about feminazis as I do, buy Barbies. It makes them soooo mad.
Wasn’t the lack of black dolls for little black girls one of the reasons the Supreme Evil voted to desegregate the schools in Brown vs. Topeka?
I don’t think Tricky or whatever her name is looks ghetto at all.
Aqua is a wonderful color for brown skin. Like all Barbie’s, she is very pretty and just what girls want in a doll.
But blacks will always find something to complain about. Actually, I wonder if this article was written by some White hating White journalist who questioned black girls until she heard a negative comment.
Hideous doll.
Unfortunately, I caught some of Dr. Phil the other day on TV while visiting at my mother’s. They were doing an anti-bullying show featuring tween girls. American Girl (the doll company) was there as some sort of sponsor of some anti-bullying initiative. At the end of the show, Dr. Phil announced that all the girls in the audience would be receiving the 2009 American Girl doll of the year ‘Crissy.’ Well, guess what color Crissy was when the showed the doll the girls would be receiving? Black, of course. Then Dr. Phil announced to viewers that the Crissy doll would be available for purchase online with no shipping charge for the next week.
American Girl is an an upscale doll company aimed at middle and upper middle class girls. Looks like the misjudged the popularity of diversity among their own customers. Not everybody is as enthralled with blacks as the people running marketing for politically correct corporations these days and now they are stuck with a bunch of black dolls nobody bought and have to unload them for free on Dr. Phil and try to bribe people with no shipping fees promotions. When will the idiots ever learn?
It is not surprising that Mattel has gone along with the multicultural blather.
I prefer the good ole days when my grandma bought me my first Barbie and Ken dolls back in 1961. All I could choose from was 3 dolls - a blonde, a brunette and a redhead
Will there be a Ken doll as her boyfriend? Of course his name would have to be Africanized to Kenya or something similar and he would have to be real, with gold grills, FUBU threads, and prison tats up and down his arms…
Here Again we have blacks criticizing what someone else has done, this seems to be what they do best?
Honestly, can ANYONE name one thing of value blacks have done for society as a whole. It cracks me up when I read some of their claims to inventions, I go to the Patent Office website and their names don’t even exist or they make claim to something invented by a white man 40 years earlier.
“The new $30.99 dolls have “authentic-looking facial features” such as fuller lips, a wider nose … and curlier hair,” Mattel said.”
And lots of “junk in the trunk”? And what about accessories? No ghetto Barbie would be complete without curvy acrylic nails, bling’d out cell phone and giraffe print leather tote, to make shoplifting easier.
When will ghetto Kanye be hitting the shelves?
The above poster was right. You can’t with blacks. If you don’t include them in every aspect of our culture, it’s racist. But when you do include them, suddenly we aren’t portraying them correctly or we’re portraying them in a negative light. Does this whining and never being satisfied never end?
Then, of course, there is this nonsense about a “weave.” Here again, Blacks must symbolically reinvent White things as being something of their. To the rest of civilization, a “weave” as Blacks call it, is and has been forever a wig.
Except for the fact that they are women into, then sewn or glued onto their heads
It’s basically true that they would complain either way. A dark skinned afro-haired barbie, would also be deemed offensive. They would then be complaining their skin tones come in all shades, and the favorite line of black women, that their hair comes in all textures, (including straight) Note that this is only true of the women, but that is because they rely on relaxers and weaves
I think every little girl should have a doll that look somewhat the way she does. Maybe the doll in question is a bit too hip-hop, I don’t know…
I think it’s only natural that kids of colour would want dolls or action figues that look like them. Maybe this Black Barbie still leaves a lot to be desired. But that can be corrected.

According to the junk science of the time, because little “colored” girls liked white dolls more than they liked “colored” (as I recall they were called at the time) dolls, this somehow showed the Supreme Court that they should open the path to eventual forced integration of public schools.
So what we have wound up with is our children being forced to associate with coarse, sometimes violent predators; predators whom, if called such, revert to “victim” status at the drop of a real or imagined slight.
This doll business of today will probably have little impact; in fact, the posts on this subject are hilarious. But it is true that the doll thing in some crazy way, was part of the path to the deterioration of our once fairly civil society.
Perhaps this latest Barbie doll will also get a new boyfriend named Barrack (in honor of the first black President) and they will live together in the new Barbie mansion, along with their 4 illegimate kids and they’ll both have brand new Barbie and Barrack BMW’s.
I think it would be better if Blacks created their own dolls and portrayed them as they would like for them to be portrayed.
Okay wow. You can never make black people happy. And it will only get worst through time because has you can see a 13 year old is speaking like her mother and her grandmother would, and those women in my opinion have a reason to still have that “chip” on her shoulder. Not a 13 year old child.
Mattel knows their competition and if you want to talk about racist why not call out Bratz. They couldn’t be any more ghetto! Barbie knows now that pretty much if you do not include EVERYBODY then you’ll get a knock at the door by Al sharpton and a riot will be outside your house in no time… So they are being smart and like others have said, in reality every little girl should have dolls that look like her. What will she think if nothing resembled her? But now that it’s happening, o it’s racist.
You know what whatever I’m over it and things like this will never go away and people like that will always make that race look bad.. i feel bad for the innocent ones that will go out there and appreciate it and even create their own items that will seem a little bit more accurate for their kind.. and this goes for every race and nationality.
