In many ways, Lou Jing is a typical young Shanghainese woman. Pretty and confident, she speaks Mandarin heavily accented with the lilting tones of the Shanghai dialect and browses the malls of this huge city for the latest fashions.
But there is one thing that distinguishes this 20-year-old from her peers, something that has made her the unwitting focus of an intense public debate about what exactly it means to be Chinese: the color of her skin. Born to a Chinese mother and an African-American father whom she has never met, the theater student rocketed into the public consciousness last month when she took part in an American Idol-esque TV show, “Go! Oriental Angel.”
The marketing gurus for the series could hardly have dreamed of a better promotional gimmick when they started to investigate the backgrounds of the dozens of pop star wannabes to root out the competitors’ mushy stories of triumph over adversity that are a well-worn staple of the genre. Here was a tale guaranteed to attract eyeballs—a girl of mixed race brought up by a single Chinese mother struggling to gain acceptance in a deeply conservative, some would say rascist, society.
The strategy worked—perhaps too well. In August, Lou’s appearance on the show not only boosted viewer numbers, but sparked an intense nationwide debate about the essential meaning of being “Chinese.” Over the last month on Internet chat rooms, where modern China’s sensitive issues are thrashed out by netizens long before they reach the heavily censored mainstream media, Lou’s ethnicity has been the subject of a relentless barrage of criticism, some of it crudely racist. They think she should not have been allowed to compete on a Chinese show, or at least not to be selected to represent Shanghai in the national competition. She doesn’t have fair skin, which is one of the most important factors for Chinese beauty. What’s more, her mother and her biological father were never married. Morally, this kind of behavior shouldn’t be publicized, so she shouldn’t have been put on TV as a young “idol.”
These kinds of posts on the most popular chat rooms have attracted thousands of comments. A few have been supportive of Lou, but the rest range from expressions of fear and ignorance to outright racism. One of the most popular posts about Lou Jing on the KDS Life forum asks in mock-seriousness: “Is it possible that she is Obama’s daughter?” Another poster said: “I can’t believe she’s so shameless that she would go on TV.” Most of the critics are agreed on one point—that this black woman cannot be regarded as a “real” Chinese.

As China undergoes an astonishing demographic shift and more foreigners make their homes in the Middle Kingdom, Lou is by no means the only one being treated differently. Recent decades have seen a surge in the number of mixed-race couples. According to the data offered by Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, from 1994 to 2008, each year, there are about 3,000 more mixed race marriages in Shanghai. But as the children of that first generation of mixed-race marriages now come of age, their moves to gain acceptance in society—like Lou’s participation in the TV show—have exposed a deep-running vein of xenophobia in Chinese society. Last year, Ding Hui, a young man of African-Chinese ethnicity, caused a stir when he was called up to the national volleyball team, prompting much soul-searching about whether this athlete should be allowed to represent China alongside other ‘pure-blooded’ Chinese competitors. Eventually, Ding Hui did go on to play in the national team.

As for Lou, she found the whole experience more than a little disturbing. She did well in the show, ranking in the top 30 contestants before she was eliminated. Now she’s back to her normal life as a college junior—with a little new insight into her home. “Through this competition, it’s really scary to find out how the color of my skin can cause such a big controversy.”

Well, she certainly doesn’t look Chinese. In any case, Asian countries still maintain the right to want to remain homogeneous, without being under attack for not embracing multiculturalism. In any European country, if an idol contestant were part black, and they said she isn’t really British, Swedish, or French, imagine the fallout. It would make the news around the world the next day, with cries of xenophobia and racism

A few weeks ago, on the same show, Super Star, in the Czech Republic, the two women judges went absolutely orgasmic over the Czech/Angola hybrid contestant.
At the same time Hungarian TV and Slovak TV was showing the police cracking down really hard, with batons, on the native nationalists who were protesting the raping of native girls and other crimes by gypsies and other foreigners.

This tripe isn’t for Chinese consumption, it’s for the West. There are almost 2B Chinese in China and they are fiercely nationalistic and racially conscious. To say there is a “demographic shift” underway is absolutely laughable and absurd.
Beautiful girl. It is not her fault she is not Chinese. Her mom is responsible for the pain her daughter is feeling. Interracial couples say ” so what, they are just racists”, when asked about their future children being made fun of. They still know it is going to hurt their children and therefore it is child abuse. That is why this story is getting traction in China. Even those Chinese who are not racist cannot understand how someone could bring a child into a world where they will NOT fit in. They consider it child abuse. In the US non racist liberals fail to see the point, that a child will be hurt no matter what.
One of the better Chinese volleyball players is a man with a black father and Chinese mother. What was the occasion about 20 or so years ago that black Americans would be in or very near China?

Time misses the point entirely here. China, like most countries in this world not founded by “immigrants” as we understand the term, is a country of one overwhelming ethnic group: Han Chinese. You don’t “become Chinese” by staying there long enough and obtaining citizenship, like you are SUPPOSED TO DO in the U.S. Lou Jing is, at best, half-Chinese. And it’s true that Asians don’t cotton to half-caste people in their societies — especially when the other half of the caste is African.
That’s the way Asians believe. It’s part of their general culture. And it’s not the place of Time Magazine, or any well-meaning foreigners or misguided Chinese, to try feverishly to change that.
Unable to build workable civilizations, blacks have fled to the four corners of the earth in their quest to find someone to take care of them.
They are truly the moochers of the world.
The New World Order, like it Marxist predecesors, wants to destroy all Races and Nations. After the Whites are gone, they will be after the Chinese and Japanese in a big way. Consider this, if not an opening shot, a foray to test weaknesses and gaps in the armor. The Chinese may be weaker than we thought.
While I completely understand where the Chinese are coming from, my heart goes out to children who are the products of mixed-race couples. They don’t have a dominant identity to go by and they are treated as outcasts. They had nothing to do with the fact that their parents miscegenated, and they can’t help it.
I think this is the worst form of child abuse there is. I even feel that it is child abuse when a white couple adopts a black child or a Chinese child and removes them from their culture. Producing a mixed race child is the same idea but 10 times worse.
These children are people just like the rest of us are, and I really hope they are happy with their identities and that they make the most of it. But in any case, I don’t think it is a good idea to miscegenate for this very reason.
Demographic shift in China?
I don’t believe it at all. The Chinese are smart enough to see just what “good” the agenda of forced racial integration has done in White countries. And “3,000” mixed-race marriages each year in Shanghai?? What do the Chinese consider as “mixed-race” A Chinese with a Vietnamese?
This is the same old tire garbage we hear all the time in the West. Notice how they make this an issue of skin color. Race is not simply skin color. Race is ancestry. That’s what Chinese are concerned about - preservation of their ancestry.
It’s also interesting to note that her father was not involved in her life. This is typical with Black fathers, as everyone knows. Obama can attest to that.

I don’t see why they should take out their anger at this poor girl.
I don’t think she’s pretty at all. If the Chinese have any ethnic pride, they’ll strongly discourage their women from doing what her mother did. It’s a crime against her people/nation.

I wonder how many of such people there have to be before China has to adopt multiculturalism as an official government policy? If someone 1/2 African-American growing up in China is just as Chinese as a full blood then an African-American first setting foot in China is fully Chinese also. At the Olympic opening ceremonies the Chinese showed their pride in their civilization attainments. It seemed kind of naive to me. It left me thinking that it was only a matter of time before they will have to include other cultures within their national identity.

So in other words, if you’re not “supportive” than you must be “afraid” or “ignorant” or “racist.” There is no other explanation.
The media gets away with mind manipulation like this only because whites have let them get away with it for so long. If whites had rejected this kind of doublespeak from the beginning, the media wouldn’t be so brazen about telling the rest of us how to think today. Will the Chinese fall for the same kind of mind manipulation?

Interesting. I wonder how the Chinese would feel about a contestant with a White father? There are similar attitudes toward dark skin in other parts of Asia. In the Philippines being racially mixed with Whites can be considered a plus and many girls in their numerous beauty contests will have surnames from American or European fathers. On the other hand it is considered unattractive to have a darker complexion. The Igorots are very dark ‘negritos’ from Luzon and recently the actress Candy Pangilinan caused a controversy by saying “you think I’m an Igorot, I’m not an Igorot, I’m human.”
If a nation hasn’t the nerve to be cruel at times, it will be destroyed. Another article posted here today is about the U.S. taking in 60,000 Bhutanese. They will be a permanent infection. They will lobby for their endless cousins to join them, have 11 kids each, use every welfare program there is, pay no taxes, and take to crime. Take a warning from the West, China: simply sterilize this girl and put an end to the spread of her father’s genes.
I see no sign of Asian ancestry by looking at her. About the only thing that gives away the fact that she might not be full black, is the fact that she actually shows signs of some calf muscles.
From a purely anthropoligical point of view Lou Jing is fascinating in that we see two very strong (but very different)sets of physignomical and anatomical genomes come together, in a combination that is usually not scene in the streets of the formery White west, and the result, as seen from the attached photo, can only be described (unfortunately and uncharitably) disharmonious.

The establishment can always claim it’s right judging the judgmental, ‘It’s only intolerance of the intolerant’, something like that. Of course it is only and ever whites who can truly be ‘intolerant’ in our multicult paradise, no matter the body count. Not that I believe this excuse for a minute. In many ways we live in a very nasty, intolerant society. A result of too much of this permissiveness.

I think mixed race people are very dangerous to society because as children they feel different and then when they are adults they have a fervent desire to destroy the races to make the world more hospitable to their kind. And in the case of mulattos, because their black genes wiped out the other race’s genes they identify with blacks and hate whites.
Also, she is not as attractive as a pretty black girl or a pretty chinese girl, but with time the liberals could brainwash the Chinese to find the mixed look attractive and hate their own race.

I read a comment earlier that is right on. Having mixed race children is selfish and abuse. I had no idea what he was saying, but she had told me later that he was angry about a White person dating a Chinese lady. She had explained to him that she was only my personal tour guide. She appologized to me for his behavior, but all I could think was “Why are White men afraid to act like this?”
Not much chance of Chinese people ever accepting this poor woman as Chinese. The Chinese are notorious for looking at all others on the planet as barbarians. This girl is doomed if she stays in China.

Africa functions as a baby factory, whose spores (male refugees) fan across the globe to impregnate as many non-black women as they can. Therefore, each non-African nation has a right to claim a small portion of Africa and develop it as they see fit. This is where they should send their half-breed children to live. It is the only humane solution that balances individual rights and still preserves the genetic interests of their race. The Chinese portion of Africa will speak Chinese and be more or less autonomous. The young lady in question should be moved there, where she would be free to marry anybody she chooses and carry on as she wishes. If current African nations object to this solution, they are free to stop the flow of spores to the rest of the world and take care of their own.
When I was in college, I had a roommate who was Japanese. It was almost half a year before she confessed to me the fact that she was actually half-Chinese. Though I didn’t understand it at the time (I was liberal in college, like many others), it was so SHAMEFUL for her to admit being half-Chinese that she routinely hid that fact from everyone outside of her family. If word got around, her family’s reputation in Japan would have been severely damaged.
I guess it comes down to this. It doesn’t matter that Lou Jing is half-black — the fact that she’s half ANYTHING other than Chinese is enough to make her an outcast in that society, and rightly so! I only wish that Europeans were more conscious of their own genetic and cultural heritage.

That’s true about Nancy Kwan, her mother was a Scottish woman named Marquita Scott. To me, it’s quite apparent that Ms. Kwan is part white.

As for Bruce Lee, his mother’s name was Grace Ho, she was 1/4 German (a German grandfather..) so Bruce Lee himself was only 1/8 white. (Although I have also read that Grace Ho was half White…)
You might be thinking about Brandon Lee - the son of Bruce Lee who died while filming the American film the Crow. His mother was a White American woman that Bruce Lee met in Seattle.

Because in the last 40+ years the school of white guilt, has taught white people that white men lynched non-black men, any time they spied a black man with a white woman. The message that white pride is evil, has been ingrained in most Americans since then.

As is common, this article tries to imply that the only difference between races is melanin. That blacks are basically whites with more pigmentation. Were color the only issue, races would probably really not exist. But they do exist, and they are not trivial differences: bone structure, propensity to certain illnesses, age of sexual maturity, as well as the widely-known proclivity for violence, impulsiveness, and lower intelligence, on average.
I’m not racist because it’s fun. I’m racist because I have no choice.

I know that if I step out of my house on any given day I will see a white male with an Asian girl.

Regrettably, you are onto something. I prefer whites to marry within their own race but I also work in academia and see some of what you say. A toxic type of militant “gender” feminism is de rigueur in academia. It has definitely soured some white men toward academic feminist white women.

So John Liu’s statement on another article, in which he claimed that when Chinese accuse someone else of not being a “true Chinese” that it was similar to saying someone was “un-American” (devoid of any racial implications), he was clearly wrong. I knew from my own experience when living in China that a strong sense of ethnic identity existed among many Chinese, and his statement was inaccurate. It is nice to see this article, and I cannot help but wonder if John Liu read it, and is choosing not to respond.

Igorots are not Negritos. They are Austronedian. The negritos are the Aetas, most of them are in Zambales.

Just read it. Japanese and Koreans are similarly non-Chinese (strictly speaking non-Han).
There are people who are Chinese of various nationalities - and races. Caucasoid Russians, and Turkic people are considered Chinese. Blacks, people obviously have less experience of - but this lady is obviously Chinese nationality - in the same way a black or yellow person can be of US nationality (in any case the Americas were never white to begin with).
Chinese Han ethnic identity is analogous to Italian ethnic identity, or Russian ethnic identity - both the two latter groups are white - but ethnic identity is still decided on biological lines - in the sense that ancestry is biological. But that does not imply Italians reject Russians as Italians (or vice versa) for racial or racist reasons.
By the way I have read some of the Chinese blogs on this - they are by no means as negative as the two authors of the article (in their desperation to make Chinese appear racist), make out to be. Part of (perhaps most) of the anger comes from the fact that her mother is standing up there, flaunting the fact that she had an illicit relationship and child behind her husbands back. That is absolutely despicable behaviour - regardless of the race of all parties. In the West it is probably acceptable behaviour. But afraid not so in China.
The daughter of course is not at fault at all and has every right to take part in the show - but the mother is obviously trying to make a meal of it - she is quite typically one of those disgusting Chinese women who love to show off their foreign boyfriend and fling it in the face of Chinese men.

58 Anon: Yes, I read Machiavelli, at the suggestion of my Peruvian French teacher. (Educated Latin Americans are not so gullible as Americans on the topic of power.) But I’ve long forgotten most of it, my views are rooted in what I see before me today. Just living in the U.S. these days will turn any thinking person into a heartless cynic, if only in self-defense.
I’m black and I have to admit, I can’t see any Asian in here. My kids are mixed and most definitely you can see both races in her. She looks more asian than black though. She has her mom’s feature, but my skin tone. But this girl, Hmmmmm.
There were times when it was obvious my parents did not mind at all me dating Chinese girls of my age, but they clearly preferred me not date any Japanese girl. I guess my parents refused to let me date Japanese women because, while they were growing up, they witnessed the signs and remains of the unfortunate days of the Korean history first-hand… I did go out with a Taiwanese girl a few times and my parents were very happy for me and her.
As for me, I would never have any trouble dating Japanse girls. I have seen quite a few very lovely Japanese women in Canada. They were very polite as well and one of them told me she was dating a Korean guy. (not me) (apparently that man’s parents did not mind their son dating Japanese women… either that or his parents were not in Canada)
This girl should be left alone(not hurt,or sterilized etc) and be accepted into Chinese society as who she is(she isn’t going to hurt the Han race)-however to tout her as the optimal,type of Chinese for the future is just wrong and and rather malicious social -engineering the likes of which we’ve all seen in the Western nations.No.
