In South Africa, Apartheid Is Dead, but White Supremacy Lingers On

More news stories on South Africa

Robert Jensen, CounterPunch, June 9, 2009

Apartheid is dead in South Africa, but a new version of white supremacy lives on.

“During apartheid the racism of white people was up front, and we knew what we were dealing with. Now white people smile at us, but for most black people the unemployment and grinding poverty and dehumanizing conditions of everyday life haven’t changed,” a black South African told me. “So, what kind of commitment to justice is under that smile?”

This community activist in Cape Town said that, ironically, the end of South’s Africa’s apartheid system of harsh racist segregation and exploitation has in some ways made it more difficult to agitate for social justice today. As he offered me his views on the complex politics of his country, Nkwame Cedile, a field worker for People’s Health Movement, expressed a frustration that I heard often in my two weeks in the country: Yes, the brutality of apartheid ended in 1994 with free elections, but the white-supremacist ideas that had animated apartheid and the racialized distribution of wealth it was designed to justify didn’t magically evaporate.

That shouldn’t be surprising—how could centuries of white supremacy simply disappear in 15 years? What did surprise me during my lecture tour was not the racial tension but how much discussions about race in South Africa sounded just like conversations in the United States. There was something eerily familiar to me, a lifelong white U.S. citizen, about those discussions. I have heard comments from black people in the United States like Cedile’s, but I’ve also heard white Americans articulate views on race that were sometimes exactly like white South Africans’. {snip}

Those similarities: South Africa and the United States were the two longstanding settler states that maintained legal apartheid long after the post-World War II decolonization process. The crucial term is “settler state,” marking a process by which an invading population exterminates or displaces and exploits the indigenous population to acquire its land and resources, with formal slavery playing a key role at some point in the country’s history. Both strategies were justified with overtly racist doctrines about white supremacy, and both required the white population to discard basic moral and religious principles, leading to a pathological psychology of superiority. Both of those settler strategies have left us with racialized disparities in wealth and well-being long after the formal apartheid is over.

The main difference: The United States struggles with its problem with a white majority, while South Africa has a black majority. But what I found fascinating his how little difference that made in terms of the psychological pathology of so many white people. So, as is typically the case, my trip to South Africa taught me not only about racism in South Africa but also in the United States, which reminded me that perhaps we travel to observe others so that we can learn about ourselves.

{snip}

[A footnote on racial terms: In South Africa people sometimes talk about race in terms of white and black, with “black” in that context meaning all people who aren’t of European descent. More specifically, the black population is made up of black Africans (such as the Zulu and Xhosa), Indians (descended from various waves of immigration from India), and coloured (mixed-race). Most whites tend to identify as of primarily English or Dutch/Afrikaner background. Many people in South Africa try to avoid apartheid-era terminology but still sometimes use these four traditional racial categories, in part because they are the basis for measuring economic progress in relation to various forms of affirmative action.]

The first trend was the belief that whatever racism remained in South Africa, things will get better naturally, as long as South Africans respect all cultures. The argument seems to go something like this: Apartheid is over, we have a black government, and now it’s time to move ahead by understanding that the problem of race in no longer political but one of inadequate cultural understanding and engagement. This celebration of diversity is familiar to us in the United States, where institutions (especially corporations and schools) tend to address difficult questions about disparities in political power and the distribution of wealth through multiculturalism. While there’s nothing wrong, of course, with acknowledging cultural diversity and helping people learn more about other cultures, multiculturalism does not take the place of real politics, no matter how much many white people wish it could. Understanding others doesn’t automatically mean that those with unearned privileged will work to undermine the system that gives them that privilege.

{snip}

After a talk at the University of Johannesburg in which I argued for always keeping discussions of race grounded in the white-supremacy of the culture, a faculty member there took issue with the tone of my remarks. If we want to be a “post-racial” society, she suggested that dialogue without all the political baggage was necessary. The only path to racial harmony was to put aside the bitterness and find a common humanity, and part of the success of the interracial dialogues she was part of was the ability of the group to put race aside, she said.

I told her I had no problem with people pursuing such discussions so long as we didn’t pretend we could erase the effects of race with the snap of our fingers. Racial distinctions and racialized disparities in wealth endure, even without the legal enshrinement of them, and that reality has to be acknowledged. She pressed the claim that such a focus on race undermines commonality, noting that as a person of German and Jewish heritage, she knew this first hand. The comments from blacks in the room who disputed her call for color blindness didn’t dissuade her; she was adamant about the proper path. As she pressed on, I noticed a row of black students behind her rolling their eyes, suggesting they had heard this before and were tired of it. The price of admission to these race dialogues was to leave behind what people of color know about race, and one thing they know is that we whites typically are too quick to believe we have transcended race.

There’s nothing new about either of these examples, of course. The student leader’s sense of supremacy that lingered just below his multicultural commitment is a painfully obvious sign of self-deception, but so are the feel-good claims of the fans of race dialogues. In 1970 one of South Africa’s most eloquent voices for justice, Steve Biko, referred to these black-white circles as “tea parties” that turn out to be “a soporific on the blacks and provide a vague satisfaction for the guilty-stricken whites.” {snip}

“Instead of involving themselves in an all-out attempt to stamp out racism from their white society, liberals waste lots of time trying to prove to as many blacks as they can find that they are liberal. This arises out of the false belief that we are faced with a black problem. There is nothing the matter with blacks. The problem is WHITE RACISM and it rests squarely on the laps of the white society.”

In rejecting what he saw as a false integration, Biko made it clear he believed in real integration premised on a struggle for justice:

“If by integration you understand a breakthrough into white society by blacks, an assimilation and acceptance of blacks into an already established set of norms and code of behaviour set up by and maintained by whites, then YES I am against it. . . . If on the other hand by integration you mean there shall be free participation by all members of a society, catering for the full expression of the self in a freely changing society as determined by the will of the people, then I am with you.”

{snip}

{snip}. Leaders such as Biko don’t blame everything on whites but instead analyze the effects of white supremacy and ask for accountability on the part of everyone. For people with unearned privilege, that accountability is too easily avoided.

{snip}

After acknowledging Biko’s political skills and courage, my conversation partner warned me not to be too taken in by the “cult” around Biko. “Remember, he died before he had a chance to get corrupt,” he said. Playing a bit dumb, I asked what he meant, and then the floodgates opened. “Just look,” he said, at the litany of incompetent and corrupt ANC politicians. They’ve gotten rich but are slowly turning the country into “one more basket case in Africa.”

Were there no honest black leaders? Was corruption more common in a black government than a white one?

He conceded that there were honest ANC leaders, and perhaps the ANC was no more corrupt than a white party. But it’s not just about honesty, he said, his sentence trailing off. I asked what he meant.

“South Africa is a modern society. We have advanced technology,” he said. “We’re more like a European country than an African one.”

That is the other face of white liberalism. A “hard-headed realism” that understands you can’t really expect the blacks to run the complex society that whites built. After our initial amiable chatting, I was taken aback by the overt racism, though I knew enough to know lots of pleasant people are racist. {snip}

So white “supremacy” lingers on in South Africa. I’d suggest that white superiority, intellectual, ethical, and productive lingers on. Black IQs didn’t abruptly soar to parity with whites upon ending apartheid.

In South Africa, as everywhere else they’re found in the world, black Africans are always at the bottom of the social, economic, and cultural order. They lead in only one area - they are the clear leaders in criminal behavior, especially violent criminal behavior.

Of course there will be “lingering white supremacy” in South Africa.

Whether the situation is Israel vis-a-vis the Palestinians and various Arab and non-Arab Muslims, South African Whites vis-a-vis Southern African blacks, and the American Southwest white Americans vis-a-vis Mexicans, it’s all the same story:

Whites move in to a territory held by the non-whites in theory (if at all), but not occupied or coveted by them. They make the territory prosperous, even in spite of hostile climate or geography. Then the non-whites all of a sudden discover their “claim” to the land and want it back. When they never wanted it to begin with, and when they got/get/will get Palestine/South Africa/Aztlan back, they won’t be able to maintain the prosperity, because they haven’t the intellect or ambition.

Non-whites want what whites have, but on their own terms. But that is impossible. Therefore, when Palestine/ZA/Aztlan regresses to the third world, the non-whites will still blame white racism.

Well now I am really concerned. This shrewd fellow has figured out that all those large successful farms, buildings and industrial complexes existing in Europe the US and South Africa were all due to “white privledge”. If whites hadn’t got in line first black people would own those homes, businesses, automobiles and everything else. I’ve been afraid for a long time somebody was going to figure this out.

I have a funny feeling that when Jensen is talking about “white privilege,” it’s just his code for “white intelligence,” since otherwise the story makes no sense. He repeatedly says whites have to overcome their “unearned privilege,” but never once suggests how they might do it (only saying that a passionate commitment to pro-black political causes is totally insufficient).

The reason he doesn’t is presumably because he knows there IS no solution short of the usual ones: genocide or forced race mixing, neither of which he can openly advocate. He does give a clue to this in that he regrets that “racial distinctions,” apart from wealth disparities, have survived the end of apartheid (it can’t just mean the labels, since he clearly states that colorblindness is not enough, either).

I think this is why he gets so uncomfortable at the end and runs away when the white South African calls his bluff, and starts hinting at innate differences. He runs away not because of his “laziness,” as he says in the full version, but because he doesn’t have an acceptable retort. He can’t argue with the guy without the risk of exposing his carefully constructed code language, so he flees. He’s much more comfortable around the “colorblind” Jewish woman from earlier in the story, by contrast, since he can hammer her with the “white privilege” attack, while knowing she will never call him out for fear of appearing “racist.”

I couldn’t bring myself to read all of this PCBS article. If one wants to know about race conditions in South Africa…ask a WHITE South African (I have) and read www.zasucks.com and www.sweetness-light.com The reason this ‘author’ found the similar attitudes between blacks in SA and Whites in SA is that we Whites here in the U.S. have EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS with American blacks.

7 — Anonymous wrote at 7:40 PM on June 10:

Right. “White Supremacy really lingers on in SA”. That must be why there are companies that don’t do business with whites, affirmative action that is in favor of blacks (and against whites), why whites are being killed and deprived of their property in South Africa. Sure sounds like “white privilege” and “white supremacy” to me. (Saracasm off)

Congratulations my good man, you just hit one right out of the ballpark; in fact, if AR had a post of the month process, you would have my nomination for June 2009!

There could be no more compelling or refuting answer to this Red tripe by Comrade Jensen above:

“The crucial term is ‘settler state,’ marking a process by which an invading population exterminates or displaces and exploits the indigenous population to acquire its land and resources, with formal slavery playing a key role at some point in the country’s history.”

The only thing that I can add of value here, is that it is ironic that the new generation of treasonous Marxist lunatics isn’t even satisfied with enforced multiculturalism and color blindness, they demand an elimination of so-called “unearned white privilege.” Normally not their own mind you, just everybody else’s.

The everybody else meaning anyone who is white and accomplishes more in life besides fantasizing about a rainbow “utopia,” where they are universally worshiped by adoring hordes of nonwhites!

All the best to you Question Diversity,

John PM!

Those “white norms and codes of behavior” include courtesy, honesty, keeping your promises, hard work, educating your children, and not annoying your neighbors with gratuitious noise. So of course the black radicals are against it. They will not be happy until the last white person is driven from South Africa. Within 10 years of achieving an all black paradise South Africa will be reduced to a Ghanian standard of living. Then the blacks there will complain about the injustice of it all.

From a white Boer Afrikaner still in SA - just a few thoughts and pointers:
It is a myth that the whites are of majority Dutch stock - we are mostly of German/Danish and British stock ( but the British descendants do not view themselves as Afrikaners and are more prone to emigration and liberalism).

How can we be accused of white supremicism when every hour of the day we have to see and hear how everything wrong in the counry is the fault of whites and/or apartheid.Anti-white propaganda is spewed from the SA Broadcasting Corporation ( another entity bancrupted under black rule ). We are tolerated as we are 9% of the poulation but responsible for the vast bulk of the tax pool and job creators.

The blacks inherited a fully funtional state with first world amenities, but in no time managed to replace those who created it in the first place with AA dunces who bancrupted and destroyed these entities in no time - and then blame the legacy of Apartheid. They know their argumens are wearing thin, even among the most uneducated voting fodder, and therefor the campaign against the white man is being put into overdrive.

White South Africans are racist because we have been forced to become racist. Compare what was done under Apartheid by whites for blacks to what has been done for whites (or even blacks) by the black government.

America, Britain and Europe - current SA is your future so take note.

Huh - even when the country’s ruled by their own people, they still look for ol’ John-Frum-Whitey to bring a solution to all their woes.

Yes, the brutality of apartheid ended in 1994 with free elections, but the white-supremacist ideas that had animated apartheid and the racialized distribution of wealth it was designed to justify didn’t magically evaporate.

Translation: All the free housing, cars, money, and wives these guys thought would rain down from the sky after “Apartheid” ended (and was repeatedly encouraged by the “raceless” white liberals safely ensconced in their Western ivory towers) didn’t happen and their new black overlords just proved to be greedy and corrupt.

Both strategies were justified with overtly racist doctrines about white supremacy, and both required the white population to discard basic moral and religious principles, leading to a pathological psychology of superiority.

“Moral” and “religious” principles, eh:
I seem to recall that both the Bible and Koran are, in fact, quite lenient of slavery, and that little “moral” piece is a tad funny considering that whites had to ban the Slave Trade in Africa (also, doesn’t college teach these guys that “absolute” morals was a “racist white invention”? That “morals” are “relative” if Tribe B wants to consume Tribe A’s dead, or Absurdistan declares that any women without a burqa should be shot?)

She pressed the claim that such a focus on race undermines commonality, noting that as a person of German and Jewish heritage, she knew this first hand.

I also seem to recall that - let’s face it - even with centuries of anti-Semitism in Europe, Europe’s Jews never found themselves in the same economic position of black slaves in the U.S., or black immigrants to the West, do. Funny that.

To be honest, you could take all the whites out of South Africa and ivory tower academics like Jensen would still be using “institutional racism”, “white privilege” and other bogus terms to bridge that abysmal chasm between “all races are equal, South Africa should be thriving” and “post-Apartheid South Africa is still a hell-hole”.

Why is it that Blacks always look to Whites to solve THEIR(Black’s) problems, most of which are self-created???? South Africa has a large Black majority and that majority is in control of the country, so what do they expect Whites to do? Blacks are the ones running things there so if there is so much unemployment, poverty and “dehumanizing” conditions, then it is up to Blacks to fix it?

Christ, whites handed the country over the blacks, everything. It’s the same in America whereever there are blacks and whites together. Most blacks always whine and complain that the “white man” is holding them down no matter how much whites have caved into their demands. And then they’ll start to emigrate to Canada and England, and once there will immediately begin complaining about all the racist treatment they encounter. I think Question Diversity is really spot on here:

“Non-whites want what whites have, but on their own terms. But that is impossible.”

This concise statement pretty much sums up every white/black and white/Hispanic conflict of the last 50 years, from American school integration to Zimbabwe “land reform.” And explains why the more blacks get their way, the madder they get at whites.

And to John PM’s comment: “…the new generation of treasonous Marxist lunatics isn’t even satisfied with enforced multiculturalism and color blindness, they demand an elimination of so-called “unearned white privilege.”

As I argued, this “privilege” is Marxist code for “intelligence” (and associated white cultural/racial characteristics) that allow whites to succeed where blacks fail. “Unearned” is code for “innate,” for no white person really did “earn” his intelligence.

The statement also reflects the longstanding Marxist desire to tear down the strong, rather than build up the weak. For example, one could reasonably argue instead that “blacks need to strive to overcome their undeserved black disadvantage,” a positive statement rather than a negative one, and one which also avoids explicit mention of innate racial differences. But this would encourage blacks to try to better themselves on their own terms, the old Booker T. Washington position which the modern Left has long since discarded.

Teach a dumb radical liberal how to write, and this is what you have to read. Looks like some student newspaper article printed at a liberal college and made available for free at the local coffee house where emaciated high voiced men wearing earrings serve your coffee.

The inaccurate words “haven’t changed” should be replaced with the accurate words “have gotten worse”. That’s right. The standard of living, crime rates, economy, are all worse in SA because apartheid ended, and nobody wants to admit it. Maybe if the dumb radicals weren’t spewing this hateful garbage, ending apartheid wouldn’t have been quite so bad.

Secondly, the colonists of both SA and the USA were both white and black, and the indiginous people were both tribal peoples who were never enslaved or exploited, nor were they the ancestors of the South African nor the American blacks. The indiginous people in South Africa were mostly exterminated by the Zulus from north of SA, and later, when white settlers made something of the empty land, came migrating south again in search of greener pastures. And the indigenous people of the USA weren’t black.

The various Asiatic ethnicities of South Africa hold high profile positions and enjoy a higher standard of living than poor blacks and racially discriminated against poor whites.

Blacks can no longer play the Race Card as the excuses have now been removed by their having been enabled by a treasonous white Marxist clique to take power, a power that they’ve never earned the right to in the first place since they weren’t the race that built South Africa through blood, sweat and tears over centuries.

Now that the larger percentage of the white population has been reduced to pecuniary and actual pauperism along with being the perpetual target of black race-hate and overt violence, I expect the blacks, at some juncture, will start blaming Asians for their continued state of stagnation and self-inflicted deprivation, not that I have any sympathy for Asians either?

After all, Asians who are non-native, are still taking high-profile positions across the political, judicial and financial/commercial infrastructures that blacks, no doubt, believe also rightly belong to them and which surely must also be causing them to keep on experiencing simmering feelings of resentment and jealousy at the unfairness of what is now becoming glaringly obvious, ie, ‘brown privilege’ in place of white.

Interesting times ahead for South Africa, methinks!

Look, the single notion that drives leftists like Jensen is the harebrained ideal of “sacred equality,” with which they are obsessed to a pathological degree. I say “pathological” because, as Nozick pointed out, while leftists, now including leftists in SA, are observed busily debating among themselves about how wealth and privilege are to be redistributed by the expedient means of the coercive power of the state, he could not find any logically sound argument justifying equality itself as an imperative. Let me now explain the reason. A generation earlier Popper pointed out off-handedly one day that he didn’t think that the core argument for equality—which is that all men should receive equal treatment in certain fundamental ways because of the fact that they are all born equally human, are equal in their fundamental identity or essence as humans [as stated by the Labour Party leader in England at that time]—is logically valid, being a violation of Hume’s law, which law states that a fact cannot infer a moral value. Facts are sterile as moral premises. As I like to put it, fact has no tongue to tell men what to do about it or how they should treat each other on account of it, including the fact of being born equally human. What was an off-handed remark by Popper caused a seismic quake to go through the leftist community. Leftists knew the jig was up. Did they abandon their harebrained ideal of equality? Hardly. They simply started treating it as a moral axiom. And from that axiom they continue to infer all their present egalitarian nonsense, like racial equality, gender equality, equal opportunity—read, equal collective outcomes—affirmative action in all its guises, in general, the sacrifice of the superior man to his inferiors, and so on. Except, as Ayn Rand points out in her monograph on epistemology, an axiom is not properly a premise by which we can infer any proposition. Alas, another blind alley for leftists. How humiliating for them. Cutting through all the blather of leftists like Jensen, peeling the onion layer after layer, what do we find at the core? A harebrained ideal, equality, that has never been successfully defended by any rules of logic of which I or anyone else am aware. Leftists are a classic case of those willing to impose their will upon others by force purely for their own ulterior psychological motive while flying by the proverbial seat of their moral pants.
