Eighty-four percent (84%) of Americans say English should be the official language of the United States. Only nine percent (9%) disagree, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Seven percent (7%) are not sure.
The support for English as the country’s official language remains steady from three years ago.
Eighty-one percent (81%) say a U.S. company should be allowed to require employees to speak English on the job, up four points from November 2007. Thirteen percent (13%) disagree.
Eighty-two percent (82%) also reject the idea that requiring people to speak English is a form of racism or bigotry, up three points from 2007. Just 10% think such a requirement is racist or bigoted.
{snip}
Eighty percent (80%) of U.S. voters believe those who move to America should adopt American culture. This level of support has been roughly consistent for many years.

As a Canadian, all I can say is that America had better insist that immigrants learn English - and not tolerate Spanish language usage and/or bilingualism - or Americans will be facing a situation similar to Canada (which has two official languages), which one Quebec politician described as “a never ending trip to the dentist’s office.”
Want sovereignty movements, separatist referendums, decreased economic growth, federal politicians catering to the separatists (Hispanics) that whine the loudest and threaten the most, and much much more? Then endorse Spanish as a de facto language of the United States, and let the ‘fun’ begin! Americans, look to Canada as a linguistic example of what you don’t want to be!
I think English as the official language is fine, but what does this mean operationally? Does it mean no more ballots in 97 different languages? Does it mean no more drivers license’s in Swahili? The question concerning most Am Ren folks is probably, “What will this do towards reversing the negative effects of multi-culturalism? I maintain, it will do nothing.
Over 80% is a national mandate. But it doesn’t matter what the people want. The elites are going to whatever they please…and we let them.
Absolutely agree. Without a common language a country becomes a tower of babel. Look at what happened to Canada, it nearly split because you had two groups, both white, that spoke different languages and had some cultural differences. Look at all the problems that has caused.
Try pulling that stunt in Europe. I hear they’ll laugh at you. If you want to live in France you’d better learn how to speak French, s’il vous plait.
Interesting, that despite the public’s wishes, the Government is fervently wed to multi-linguism.
It does not matter much does it. The 9 percent are what counts.
Gee, that 9% couldn’t be hispanics or self-hating, brainwashed whites, could it?
Eighty-four percent Americans want English our official language, but yet, our elected offials won’t vote for it. Don’t they work for us? Aren’t they supposed to vote the way WE want them to? When did the tables turn?
As a Canadian, I thought English WAS the official language of the United States, without question. Get it into law before anyone can challenge it, because you don’t know the cost of official bilingualism or multilingualism.
Every sign, every government document, and every service will have to be provided in the alternative languages. Simultaneous translation will be mandatory for many government-sponsored events, and the costs will be enormous.
All I can say is say something, say anything, just stand up for our language and culture, the language and culture of our forebearers who constructed it while they struggled and built a nation for us.
The day I get “Drucken Sie die Eins fuer Deutsch” is the day I leave Germany!
We should make spanish the official language of USA.
This is long overdue. I was discriminated against by the Girl Scouts of America’s AZ headquarters in Tucson because I don’t speak Spanish. All one has to do to discriminate against us is post ‘Bi-linquial prefered’. This translates to English speakers need not apply. Nearly ever nation on earth has offical languages execept America and the UK.
I have traveled to many countries around the world, so I have a great respect for many different cultures. At home, I like to go to many different cultural festivals and sample different cuisine at many different restaurants.
But if you want to immigrate to the United States of America, learn to speak English and become an American! I deeply resent how Spanish is often an option along with English. I am sure there are many decent people of Latino heritage who speak English and do not Spanish impose on the rest us. But I still do not think it is right for Hispanics to impose Spanish on the rest of us, in our own county, when all other ethnic groups do not impose their language. We must keep English as our national language to fair to all Americans of many different ethnic backrounds.
My own ancestors came to this country in the early 20th Century from Russia, just like in “Fiddler on the Roof.” When they arrived here they did not demand that everyone speak Russian to accommodate them, but made every effort to learn English and become Americans. The same can be said for German, Italian, French, and even Asian immigrants. Even though Asian immigrants, and Asian-Americans, use their native languages in their own neiborhoods, they still speak English in everyday life and do not demand that Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. be imposed on the rest of us.
Hurrah for Joe Vento of South Philly for demanding that customers of his Philly Cheese Steaks order in English!
When my paternal great-grandparents came here from Belarus and Poland, not only did they learn English, but they also Anglicized their names. They assimilated.
Last I checked, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written in English.
If so many Americans want English as their official language then why hasn’t the US Congress acted on this legitimate demand? Like doing little or nothing for decades about stopping the Mexican invasion, this is just another proof that our lying sell-out politicians don’t work for us, . they work only for those groups that can help or threaten their re-election to power & privilege. The rest they might pretend concern for and of course vote for laws that they know they won’t get in trouble for.
Americans just can’t wake up to this fact, or don’t care, as long as they’re on the receiving end for some of those pork earmarks.
What would official English do towards addressing the negative effects of multiculturalism? It wouldn’t be the total solution, but I think it would do some good. It would show some rare backbone on the part of the American people.
On the other hand, it could lead to a still greater complacency in causing us to think that we had successfully addressed the dangers of multiculturalism and that we now wouldn’t have to worry about immigration. I guess English-only without an overall greater racial awareness wouldn’t solve any problems by itself.
Before we all get carried away in our righteousness, let’s not forget that it is extremely difficult to learn a new language and not everyone is going to do it, regardless of any law.
Also be aware that we are on the verge of having low-cost and accurate hand-held computer language translators. Devices will likely appear in the next ten years that cost less than $100. These devices will ‘hear’ a sentence spoken in another language and display its translation into English onto a small screen. Using a device like this assumes that the other person can read in their native language, but even the dullest immigrant can read at middle-school level in their native language. Otherwise they would have stayed at home country.
With devices like this, repressive language laws will be counter-productive and unnecessary. These devices would significantly speed-up the process of learning a new language. They would also make it a lot easier for us to go to their countries and take their jobs and resources and culture as they are doing to us.
For those of you that may think that making English the official language is meaningless, please visit Southern California, or any other area of the US that is now majority Mexican.
Here in L.A., everything is subtitled in Spanish including regular items in the grocery store. More importantly, being bilingual in Spanish in order to find a job is becoming more and more necessary as business are being forced to adapt to all the non-English speaking invaders in order to survive financially.
Making English the official language is not a fix-all to the sad situation we’ve allowed ourselves to get into, but at least it’s a move in the right direction.
Tom S, the tables seem to have turned near the end of World War Two, when our ‘government’ cooperated with the Nazi Ratline, and imported Ustasi as ‘freedom fighters’. Not long after that, one Japanese ‘doctor’ who had performed horrific medical experiments on American troops (tying them to posts, then exploding bombs near them, and observing them as they slowly died in agony of gangrene, in the boiling sun) was invited to come to America to lecture at medical schools. You will remember that a few years earlier, our ‘government’ started cooperating with Cosa Nostra in keeping our ports secure (the mob controlled the ports). The Nazis, the Japanese, and The Mob clearly used blood money to buy their way out of trouble, and even to get preferential treatment.
And it’s been getting worse ever since. ‘Our’ elected officials have been for sale for a long, long time, and only pretend to represent our interests.
Before we all get carried away in our righteousness, let’s not forget that it is extremely difficult to learn a new language and not everyone is going to do it, regardless of any law.
I don’t know about all the countries, but if you don’t speak Arabic in an Arabic speaking country, you DO NOT work in that country unless you are working for a company employed by that country. 3rd worlders are generally given a very crash course in Arabic and are expected to learn or leave!! good plan BTW, I also love the Arabic countries immigration laws.
“Before we all get carried away in our righteousness, let’s not forget that it is extremely difficult to learn a new language and not everyone is going to do it, regardless of any law”
This has nothing to do with “righteousness”, this has to do with the fact that if you go to another country, ANY country and move there, you are expected to learn the language regrardless of how difficult it it. Why should it be any different for the USA. If people won’t or can’t learn english, than they should return to their homeland. It is wrong for them to come here and demand that we accomadate them. It would be like americans going to France and demanding they have english.
“As a Canadian, I thought English WAS the official language of the United States, without question. Get it into law before anyone can challenge it, because you don’t know the cost of official bilingualism or multilingualism.”
Unfortunatley, in texas we do . We have de facto bilingualism. As someone else noted, more and more, jobs require you to be bilingual that is speak spanish and english, so anyone, white, black, asian etc. is discriminated against. Of course if you are bilingual and your other language is french or german, that doesn’t count. Government documents in texas are in both and a lot of other things and yes, it is costly and a pain.
Anonymousm, non-hispanic people in Texas who are bitching about Spanish’s rising influence, richly deserve what they are getting. Same goes for California and the whole U.S. if it shouls come to it. Most readers here know how energetically, Mexicans and other hispanics defend their language and culture. Yet, so many Americans, oblivious to almost every important thing that is happening to them, take their language, history and culture with a grain of salt. As I said in an earlier blog, I urge readers to look up Alan Walls article at the V-dare website, entitled, “Hispanic Triumphalism, Globalism in School Spanish Textbooks—Courtesy of U.S. Taxpayer”
If people won’t or can’t learn english, than they should return to their homeland. It is wrong for them to come here and demand that we accomadate them. It would be like americans going to France and demanding they have english.
Americans live all over the world in non-English speaking places without knowing the local lingo. In fact the people most disinclined to pick up a foreign language, even when away from home, are the Anglo Saxon, obviously because English is the defacto international language anyway.
People can speak what they like, in gobbledegook if they want. That should be their right. But it should not be their right to demand that the country they live in make special allowances for their lack of ability in the native tongue just to convenience them. And if the host country stands firm, people will have every incentive to learn the local language anyway.
Anyway, in another 20 or 30 years, Chinese will be ruling the world. So whites should be a little tolerant of non-English speakers. That way there is more chance your future Chinese overlords will be nice to you.
It is only a matter of time before Spanish the official language in the United States. It is rapidly becoming the defacto official language in many American businesses. In many parts of California, Texas and Florida, not to mention other parts of the Southwest, you can’t get a job unless you speak Spanish. And its only going to get worse. Once Mexico empties out, the rest of Central and South America will follow suit and spread all over the country. More businesses will cater to them in Spanish. There will be no reason for them to learn English. With anchor babies and chain migration, it is only a matter of time that this country is majority Spanish speaking. Then they will elect Latino or Hispanic politicians who WILL do what our Anglo politicians WON’T do. Put in a constitutional amendment with an official language. It won’t be English, though. I am making sure the children in my family get fluent in Spanish.
