Racial Disparity in Breast Cancer Explained

More news stories on Racial Differences

Reuters, March 12, 2009

High blood pressure accounts for some of the disproportionately higher mortality rates among African American women with breast cancer compared with their Caucasian counterparts, according to an article in the International Journal of Cancer.

To examine coexisting conditions that may be involved in this disparity, Dr. Dejana Braithwaite at the University of California, San Francisco, and co-investigators analyzed data for women with invasive breast cancer treated at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California between 1973 and 1986 and followed through 1999. There were 416 African-American patients and 838 white patients.

During an average follow-up of 8.9 years, the overall mortality was 39.7 percent among the black women and 33.3 percent among the white women. The corresponding breast cancer mortality was 28.6 percent and 21.6 percent African-Americans also had higher rates of hypertension (43.3 percent vs 28.3 percent.)

After controlling for tumor characteristics, breast cancer treatment, age, and race, hypertension was significantly associated with mortality from any cause. This one factor explained 30.3 percent of racial disparity in all-cause survival,” as well as 20.0 percent of the racial disparity in breast cancer-specific survival, Braithwaite s group reports.

Seems as though the liberal media is always looking for a story where blacks are the victims of some devious plot by whitey….So blacks have higher incidences of and higher death rates from certain diseases? Ever see what a typical black eats? The ones I went to school with seemed to like greasy meats, lots of salt, lots of sugar products and most had a dislike for vegetables. I dont know if there has ever been a study of obesity rates for the differing races, but it is very obvious that blacks lead the pack in obesity. At least from my unscientific observations they do. IMO, the reasons for higher mortality rates from some diseases for blacks isnt a secret. And it for sure isnt a white plot against blacks.

Multicultural societies are failures if for no reason other than the differences between the tribal factions are always headlined, yet we’re told by the same people that we’re all the same under the skin.

A “diverse” society is very much like the goings on within a lunatic asylum. Very often it is the inmates who dictate policy and reccommend solutions to problems that don’t exist.

“37% of African-American women are obese; 33% of Mexican-American Women are obese; 24% of Caucasian women are obese

The statistics are startling. Sixty-six percent of African-American women are overweight and 37 percent are technically obese, meaning that they are 30 percent above ideal body weight. The figures for Mexican-American women are similar: 66 percent overweight and 33 percent obese. For Caucasian women, the figures are slightly lower with 49 percent considered overweight and 24 percent, obese.”

This article references a study from 1996 that studies obesity and race. Sugars and fat must obviously be “racist” for trying to kill off minorities. Of course, point out that Hispanics and Blacks have slower metabolisms than Whites and Asians, and you’ll be jailed for hate speech.

Recently I read somewhere that end of life expenses were much higher for blacks and Hispanics compared to whites. I suspect all this is tied together. People who eat all the time like a kid in a movie theater are going to succumb in more complicated scenarios, involving hypertension, morbid obesity, congestive heart failure, exotic cancers, and of course stroke. Not only that, when you die at a younger age, say in you r 60’s when most blacks do, its a more difficult event. It’s the way the human body works. A child can tolerate much greater trauma than a middle age adult and a middle age adult can survive many things that will kill a senior. And someone in their 60’s requires many more physical insults to their health than 80 year olds before they pass. Take my grandmother, for instance. She was never sick a day in her life. but at the age of 102, her brain just sort of shorted out and she keeled over. One minute she’s eating a grapefruit in her kitchen and the next minute: Phut! No complications, no end of life health expenses for the insurance company. Just, Phut! The very definition of a good death.

Yes; let’s blame “racism” for this.

In the meantime, breast cancer is almost unheard-of among Japanese women.

Breast cancer is also not a “social construct”.

I don’t think blacks eat that much differently than whites. Whites seem more health conscious from what I’ve observed. The more obvious explanation is that, from what I’ve read on this site is that blacks have a lower metabolism so they put on pounds easier than other races.
