Black colleges in the United States are reeling from the impact of a recession that has hit their funding and are struggling to retain poor and middle income students.

“All the trends are bad right now,” said Michael Lomax, president of the United Negro College Fund, which raises money for 39 of the 103 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States.
In a dramatic example, Clark Atlanta University laid off 70 of its 229 full-time faculty members and consolidated classes in its arts and science school last week when 300 students out of an enrollment of about 4,000 failed to return for the spring semester because of cost.
“Ninety-eight percent of our students require financial aid. As that became less accessible, increasingly our students have found they were unable to return,” said spokeswoman Jennifer Jiles.
As it stands, the $787 billion stimulus bill includes money to make an “incredible difference” to HBCUs, said Lezli Baskerville, president of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.
It would include more than $800 million for infrastructure projects on HBCU campuses and $500 million over two years for improvements in technology as well as increased federal grants for students from low-income families, she said.

NATIONAL REPUTATION

HBCUs enroll 14 percent of African American students but constitute only 3 percent of America’s 4,084 institutions of higher education, according to government figures.
Many boast a tradition of promoting black leadership: civil rights leader Martin Luther King and film maker Spike Lee attended Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Educator Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee University in Alabama in 1881 and prominent agriculturalist George Washington Carver set up its agricultural school.
In contrast, Obama attended Occidental College in Los Angeles and Columbia University in New York, neither an HBCU.
Since segregation was banned in the 1960s, the black schools have diversified. Many have multiracial faculties and go out of their way to attract non-black students.
West Virginia State University is classed as an HBCU, though its student body is mainly white.
The 47 state-run HBCU’s and six law schools are in the same boat as other state colleges, forced to cut costs and delay capital projects, said Dwayne Ashley, chief executive of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which funds students at state HBCU’s.
{snip}
Ashley said HBCUs provided a “nurturing environment”.
{snip}
Few cite racial solidarity as a key attraction, perhaps fearing accusations over political correctness. But many students say they chose an HBCU partly to be among other African Americans after attending racially mixed high schools.

“go out of their way to attract non-black students”
I never recall getting a recruiter from black schools, but I do recall not getting any scholarships since I was the “wrong” color
Even without a recession, they would be on hard times. Why would college-bound blacks (and from Wayne Eagle’s post here a couple of weeks ago, would mean ones that can’t write five coherent paragraphs) want to go to an HBCU when they can go to the “mainstream” college and university system that will accept them with loving affirmative action arms?
Especially with the story a few days ago here, Morris Brown almost didn’t have any water service.
They could get a trillion dollars every month, and it wouldn’t make one whit of difference in the learning ability of their students.
Obama spent years sitting in a church listening to Wright completely trash white people while the silly white leaders were telling whites to be more tolerant. He spent years as a community activist, which is another way of saying he was completely immersed in promoting blacks and black causes to the exclusion of all else.
So, when he comes up with spending bills that are 95% pro-black should anyone be surprised?
He’s continuing on with business as usual.
The most accurate economists forecasting today, just recently warned of the next two most significant occurences in this long downward spiral: 1) The commercial real estate market will collapse this year, probably in the next couple of months, with more devastation than the sub-prime crash.
2)Colleges and universities will either have to cut back to simple basic subjects, trimming all the multicult fat, like black studies, feminist nonsense, or they’ll have to close. Many will fall by the wayside anyway.
Also look for tenured professors to actually begin teaching classes again instead of drifting off into diversity nonsense, trying to get something published that will sooth the eyes of the large multicult donors, so that they can get a steady stream of donations. That will be over. Even the wealthy will be hurting. Look also for the billions spent on sports to be cut back to just a small percentage of what they’ve been wasting in the past.
I sincerely hope the forecasters are correct, and there’s every indication that they will be, because it is these perversions of learning that have been no more than institutions of programming and mind control.
As I’ve said many times. We must fail and fail miserably as a nation in order to succeed as a people. So far everything is evolving as forecast. We’ll see if it continues. We’ll know by the middle of this year or no later than Fall.
Why is giving money to historically Black schools allowed if the same amounts per capita are not also provided to historically white schools ?
West Virginia State University is classed as an HBCU, though its student body is mainly white.
This sounds like a little game that is played. It allows them to skew the statistics and camouflage the blatant racism of using taxpayer money to fund a black college.
“Ninety-eight percent of our students require financial aid. As that became less accessible, increasingly our students have found they were unable to return,” said spokeswoman Jennifer Jiles.

“Less accessible????” Puh-leeze.
The only way blacks would find federal financial aid “less accessible” is if they maxed out the time to receive aid, which is 7 years I believe. They will rarely finish a degree program, but will jump from program to program until they have maxed out their time at the gubmint teat.
Say what you want about black IQ, but they are geniuses when it comes to milking the federal student aid system.
“But many students say they chose an HBCU partly to be among other African Americans after attending racially mixed high schools.”

But isn’t this self segregating? Maybe someone should let AG Holder know.
For the sake of our African-American students we need to keep these black colleges open at all cost, because it’s extremely difficult for black people to get a degree in a real college. They need the security of greatly reduced standards, minimal study, and fake tests that don’t require in depth knowledge of subject matter. They absolutely require these watered-down degrees so they can compete for jobs on equal footging with white kids who earn real degrees. This is critical to our national heritage, our rich racial diversity, and to political correctness everywhere. More importantly we do not need to continue to disappoint important, brilliant people like Spike Lee, Jeremiah Wright, Michelle Obama, and Whoopi Goldberg.
“many students say they chose an HBCU partly to be among other African Americans after attending racially mixed high schools.”
This is the only kind of life most Americans have ever known, unless you’re older than 60 years old or so and I doubt if even then things were really much different. Blacks have their own separate tributes to blackness; past, present and future, while white are maligned in the here and now for evil doing the very same thing sometime in the distant past. Well, there is always AmRen in the here and now celebrating the splendor of whiteness.
Reaching out to whites? Yes, because they pay to attend. I wonder
how much scholarship money goes to these whites?
Perhaps they will use some of that money to develop the ‘diversity programs’ that they have long been exempt from.
…just a little side comment: there actually is a market for HBCUs among non-blacks, and that’s among whites or other non-blacks who have flunked out of other schools. Most decent 4-year colleges have a rigid rule against admitting students dismissed from elsewhere due to academic difficulty, or at least have “barrier” GPA restrictions (sometimes as high as a 3.0 “B” average for transfer admission). One can start over at a 2-year community college, but those schools themselves tend to be heavily minority, and moreover will typically lead to spending 3 full years at the four-year school one can transfer to (5 years undergrad, not counting whatever credits/years one had at the school one flunked out of, due to curricular mismatch).
The HBCUs are typically too glad to admit a white flunk-out from even a third-rate college. I know this because an acquaintance of mine who was kicked out of a nice state school due to neuro imbalances was able to transfer easily to an HBCU. He flunked out of that too!
(This post is also a caution to anyone on this list with kids who think college is a big 4-year vacation. The long-term results of that can be devastating if they sink below the minimum performance line. “You can always be readmitted” is seldom true. The stereotypes that college flunk-outs are stupid, sleazy, crude, drug-using, and have low cultural tastes will only be amplified when one’s only choice of transfer school is one where the other students actually are stupid, sleazy and crude with low cultural tastes.)
With a couple of exceptions, most blacks who enter black colleges never graduate. They are Potemkin Villages for the black leadership and the illiterate liberal media to pretend that blacks are as smart as whites or Asians or Jews. Jewish colleges like Brandeis and Yeshiva have been hard hit by the recesssion, and are cutting programs. But the Jewish community will step up its giving to its colleges and keep most if not all scholarship students, Jewish and nonJewish alike, in school.
Maybe the average black ‘citizen’ can give up a bag or two of pot a week, or donate the money not going to the local lottery to Clark Atlanta, Grambling, Norfok State, Delaware State and other fifth rate schools so that blacks can pretend that they too go to college. Even in majority white schools, most blacks are gone by senior year, except for elite schools like the Ivies or Williams which get the highest IQ sliver of the black community.
High grade black students do not go to black colleges unless they are so insecure about competition with Asians and whites that they trade down to a vocational school like Howard or one of the idiotuniversities that litter the South as a pathetic relic of Reconstruction.
NOTE: The “African American” Obamas did not go to historical black schools either as undergraduates or professional graduate students. They are too smart; both in terms of iq and poltically. How many Howard Law School grads are in Obama’s top circle? How many Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, etc. grads?
