Johannes Mehserle, the former BART police officer accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man New Year’s Day, was arrested at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday on a murder charge in Nevada, officials confirmed.
Witnesses say Mehserle, 27, killed Oscar Grant III, 22, at an Oakland BART station in the early morning of Jan. 1, in a shooting that prompted massive protests after videos of the incident surfaced and were shown on television and on the Web.
Mehserle is being held in Douglas County, Nevada, on a no-bail warrant, law-enforcement officials said. Because he was arrested in Nevada, Mehserle will face an extradition hearing before returning to Alameda County, a process which could take at least a few days.
The jail staff reports Mehserle has been cooperative and is housed in a segregated area of the facility and on a “precautionary health and welfare watch.”
Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff is expected to discuss the arrest further today. Mehserle had been moving from place to place in recent days as he faced numerous death threats. He was reportedly arrested without incident.

“The family will certainly be relieved that the (district attorney) has made some effort to bring him to justice,” said John Burris, an attorney who is representing Grant’s family in a $25 million claim against BART. “This is terrific. This is a very important step in healing the community.”

Oakland assistant police chief Howard Jordan said he hoped news of the arrest would calm tensions among the more than 1,000 people expected to protest the shooting today.
“We’re hoping that people act civilly and they take this recent action as a sign the (district attorney) was committed to doing (the) job and moving forward with a complete, thorough and unbiased investigation,” Jordan said.

Earlier Tuesday, Mayor Ron Dellums said he understands the anger people feel, but said taking anger out on people who had nothing to do with the shooting is an injustice in its own right.

“The family will certainly be relieved that the (district attorney) has made some effort to bring him to justice,” said John Burris, an attorney who is representing Grant’s family in a $25 million claim against BART. “This is terrific. This is a very important step in healing the community.”
Slumlord millionaire lawyer John Burris gets at least a $7.5 million cut if the law suit is successful. I hope I get called up for jury duty on this case. It’s clear to me that Johannes Mehserle is 100% innocent of any crime: he was performing his duty in a rotten, dangerous community. Perhaps the people on the scene should be charged for provoking the accidental shooting.
I know there will be several people in here that will disagree with me, but it would be a bad thing if he were convicted. Oakland and Berkeley are full of arrogant thug blacks, while in a hospital waiting room today, I read an SI article from June 2008, not saying in so many words, but reading between the liberal excuseologist pandering lines, that black crime has gotten so bad in Oakland that not even teenage athletes, once put on a pedestal, are safe anymore.
The hard fact of the matter is that in order to have both a black population and social order, law enforcement must have more leeway to be what is termed to be abusive by white standards.
When I watched the video, what I saw were officers outnumbered and under siege by a threatening crowd provoking a response.
I would have been scared and worried in that situation. I don’t know if I would have taken out my gun but I might have had my hand on it, making sure the crowd saw me do so.
In this kind of situation, the police are up against impossible circumstances. They deal with petty punks and creeps all day and one can image their anger and frustration. It was a lose-lose situation from the start.
I hope this guy gets a fair hearing. I hope his department stands with him and not against him by thowing him to the wolves.
In that town, black males kill other black males at the rate of about 2 a week. No riots. But, one white cop kills a black male = riots. What exactly is the problem here? Are only blacks allowed to kill other blacks? Are they angry because a white got involved?
It looks as though the cop was out of line. But, I tell you, it’s just so hard to care.
One thing Amren should do (since it is in no way being reported by the mainstream media) is do an expose on who Oscar Grant was. Dig up his criminal history and profile his many victims. The MSM portrays him as an innocent black victim of racist police hate. When in actuality he was a violent criminal, fresh out of prison, who was in the midst of committing yet another violent crime, when he had the misfortune to accidentally be shot while resisting arrest.
Like Rodney King and the Jena 6, this story begs for the truth to be exposed.
As with any mindless mob, blacks will burn their own neighborhoods down if this man isn’t given a high-tech lynching.
Blacks know that when they do, tax bucks pour into their destroyed neighborhoods, little is done, and a few social parasites pocket the cash. Of course, all involved are “down wit da struggle”.
“….said John Burris, an attorney who is representing Grant’s family in a $25 million claim against BART.”
$25 million!? Even allowing a pain-and-suffering premium equal to twice the damages, that’d be just over $8 million in damages. Does his family believe that Oscar Grant would have generated $8 million in income for his family? Or even just for himself? Ghetto Lottery indeed.
There appears to be a very strong “rush to judgement” in this case. I think the District Attorney’s office at very least should wait for the BART’s internal affairs unit or the FBI to conduct an investigation into the case and whether or not the officer’s actions were justified. I think the District Attorney’s office is going to look very stupid if an investigation shows the officer was following the proper procedures.
The officer in question deserves due process and at the very least should have his case investigaged by a law enforcement agency BEFORE charges are filed or a warrant for his arrest is issued.
I talked to my friend who used to support Amren about this very subject. She told me this morning how sick she is of having that cop being convicted by the media. She says that he is not being tried by the media but already convicted by the media while the media takes great care to never say anything offensive about black thugs. She was both angry and sad about how much more interested the thug’s family seemed in profiting from his death than in giving him a proper buriel. She is right about that because they filed suit before they had his funeral.
What do you all think that white people’s response should be? I asked my friend the same question. She told me that there is not going to be a response. Could she really be right that white people are just too gutless to do anything? She used to be really outspoken on behalf of white people herself. Now she doesn’t want to talk about the issue and doesn’t understand why I sometimes still read here, but she is the one who told me about it.
Do you all agree that the people here just want to rant about other races outside the presence of people of other races and then defend their own interracial relationships, or can there actually be an effective protest against the injustice being done to that police officer?
Exactly like Sean Bell in Brookyln, Oscar Grant was a known gun-crime felon who was exterminated by a cop justly scared for his life.
As I have said many times before here: does anyone really believe that Sean Bell’s family (awarded 20 million dollars by the spineless City of New York), or Oscar Grant’s family (suiing for 25 million dollars - and they will get it), … does anyone really believe that these thugs’ families, newly enriched by out-of-control twisted white guilt, if they had the chance, would trade in their newfound millions to get back their permanently trouble-making hoodlum dead relatives?
What would you prefer: 25 million dollars or the obligation to bail young Melvin out of jail for the next 20 years (until he reaches his forties, when his testosterone levels start to subside).
Many Amrenners know this deep down: non-whites in general do not have the same standards when it comes to considering the value of human life, as opposed to whites.
This is why Whites, and only Whites, dominate in the world History of philanthropy and missionism.
What a relief it is that I can post this on this board, and here and only here the readers of this website will know exactly what I’m talking about.
Thank God for the Internet; Thank God for Amren; and may God condemn the New York Times.
The video shows what appears to be an accidental discharge, and I have nothing but sympathy for the officer. The Oakland blacks will be demanding his conviction for nothing less than murder and riots will ensue if they don’t have their way. This could get ugly, folks, my guess is they are going to sacrifice this officer in order to appease the angry African mob that makes up Oakland.
Why 25 million dollars? This seems to me like an ridiculous sum of money. Its not like he was a rocket scientist or something. He was 22. Lets assume he would have worked until age 65. That is 43 years. That works out to $581,395.34 PER YEAR! I doubt he would have earned a tenth of that (at least through honest means). And this assumes he would never have ended up back in prison too.
What WERE the circumstances of the shooting? I’ve heard lots of hype but no real description of the incident. If the punk was threatening the officer and got shot… that’s one thing. If the shooting was describable as a gun accident (officer holding it; got bumped and the gun fired)… that’s an entirely different yet plausible scenario. A trigger-happy cop shooting a civilian… a third scenario.
Let’s hear just what happened; then form our opinions.
It’s sort of ironic - this is the 13th “case” Grant was involved in since April 2004.
“KPIX-TV reported Grant had a criminal record and served time at state prison in 2007 and 2008 and was involved in twelve cases between April 2004 and May 2008. Grant, who had also been convicted of drug dealing, had been sentenced to 16 months in state prison in 2007 after he fled from a traffic stop while armed with a loaded pistol. Grant was most recently released from prison September 23, corrections officials said. Any other convictions (before 2004) are not public record since Grant was a minor at that time.”

“Your government come after me with a whole Army. A whole Army! It`s clear to me the meaning. In Texas, only Texans are allowed to rob banks.” -Eli Wallach as Calvera in The Magnificent Seven
“There appears to be a very strong “rush to judgement” in this case. I think the District Attorney’s office at very least should wait for the BART’s internal affairs unit or the FBI to conduct an investigation into the case and whether or not the officer’s actions were justified.” Yellow man
I agree Yellow man. The officer should be suspended pending an investigation by Internal Affairs and the F.B.I. If charges are warrented, then he should be charged. I don’t like any rush to judgement in the law—particularly when racially motivated.
Shooting a prone, unarmed man in the back is despicable, and I think it is eminently fair to hold law-enforcement officers to a higher standard than the rest of the community. Policemen who dislike this concept are cordially invited to quit their jobs and deliver pizza or fry hamburgers for a living.
The trigger-happy ex-cop, Mehserle isn’t being “lynched”. He’s going to get a trial, which is more than he allowed his victim to receive.
Grant wasn’t a saint, and the world is probably better off without him, but he was shot in the back while apparently cooperating with an arresting officer who had no way of knowing at the time of the incident that Grant had a criminal history.
I’m an ex-con, too. If some mouth-breathing “transit cop” with a two-digit IQ shot me in the back, would the press describe me as a former research chemist with 79 US and foreign patents awarded and a devoted husband and father, or as a former federal felon and “racist”? You get three guesses as to which, and the first two don’t count.
I don’t regard this incident as a racial issue at all; I simply would not want to live in a country where police officers are allowed to shoot unarmed, cooperative suspects.
This is important for people to understand. Alameda County is a totally liberal county, worse then you can imagine. It is the most diverse county in the state. I grew up up there and I hate it (I had to leave).
The man who was killed, is a known gang member on probation. He lives in Palma Ceia, which is a run down area. The lawyer who took this case (Burris), hates white cops (actually all cops) and he has made millions off these type of cases. This was an accident, there is no way this should be charged as a murder.
I could say so much more but I’m out of space. This will be a public lynching of a white man, it is disgusting.
Ginny’s friend is right: there is not going to be any response from white people. Just silence. The usual thing. Whites are too disorganized, too disunited, and too afraid to open their mouths on “minority” issues. Whites are media-brainwashed and pacified, and they(we) lack any sense of common identity. (That would be considered “racist”!) Most whites, that is.
But she should not castigate Amren for this. Amren is like a newspaper: it’s purpose is to educate and inform. It reports the news — especially the news that’s otherwise unreported. It is not to organize protests, rallies, or political movements.
A trigger-happy cop shooting a civilian… a third scenario.

And there’s a fourth possible scenario — a young white cop, inexperienced, stuck in the ghetto, surrounded by black thugs, scared stiff and soiling his pants. It happens.
“Why 25 million dollars? He was 22. Lets assume he would have worked until age 65. That is 43 years. That works out to $581,395.34 PER YEAR! I doubt he would have earned a tenth of that (at least through honest means).” - Anonymous
Given inflation and the steady decline of the dollar, It’s not far fetched that in 40 years he’d be earning $600,000. a year — even as a short-order cook or a dish washer. It’s incredible to realize, but I just calculated that 40 years ago I was paying 1/30th the housing expense I have today (and making comparably less). Back then, I never imagined the income I’d have today; but I never imagined the expenses either. Just compare the cost of a house in California today contrasted to the 1960s. So it’s entirely possible. One thirtieth of $600,000. comes out to only $20,000 per year. He’ll be eking by on that and shopping the store sales and specials. We all will. Frankly, I think it’ll be worse, much worse; mercifully, I won’t be here to see it.
And it doesn’t appear the dollar’s decline will be reversed by the new messiah who was supposed to fix everything. Before he’s even inaugurated, they’re planning (as another poster so aptly put it) a 200 million dollar “ghetto block party” to celebrate the coming end of white America. The biggest event in the history of the universe, as Oprah said. No, from now on it’s going to get much worse.
“Slumlord millionaire lawyer John Burris gets at least a $7.5 million cut if the law suit is successful.”
Not in California. Attorneys is CAlifornia get 45 percent. That’s $12 million.
They will probably win. A deal will probably be cut for a lot less than $25 million. Then it will be a structured settlement. The money will be paid to Burris in monthly installments. Burris will take out his cut and then issue a check for 55 percent.
You may be sure the IRS will be right there too.
Can’t tell anything from the blurred Youtube video. The thug was clearly worthless & the rioters are more worthless BUT, if the thug was shot in the back, the cop is wrong. We should not be reflexively supporting an armed agent of government who shots someone in the back. In the original post, only Peejay and P Norman (& me) avoided a rush to judgment. Militarized robocops are not our allies.
What are the consequences of all of this?
1) Police (certainly White ones) will be more reluctant to engage with black thugs.
2) Said black thugs will feel more emboldened and their thuggish behaviour will be worse.
I have the same question as Fed Up. I know there are some readers fron the San Fran area. Has anybody got any info on what actually happened? It sure looks like a case of unintentional discharge under extreme stress, but I don’t know. I can’t believe they’re charging him with murder.
Following up my earlier post, I found the online version of the SI story of which I spoke:
http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1141120/index.htm
It’s called “How Dreams Die.”
Although I am not ready to blame the officier in question its quite obvious that something went wrong. When an unarmed man who is lying prone on the ground is shot in the back there needs to be a serious analysis of what happened.
In this case I think BART’s use of force policy needs to be analyzed and a single question needs to be asked: was the officier in compliance was BART’s force policy when he had his weapon pulled.
If the answer is yes then BART needs to re evaluate that policy and change it so this type of incident never happens ao anyone again.
However if the officier was not the proper rules and procedures then the police union should send him a lawyer and he should meet with the district attorney’s office BEFORE charges are filed.
An unarmed man was shot in the back while lying on the gorund regardless of the officer’s culpability or innocence I think the victim’s family definitely deserves big bucks. A man died for no reason.
You hit the nail on the head sister “NOLA”. I know exactly what you’re taking about. These “mental midgets” would and do sacrifice anyone in their family— mother, father, kids— to get a ghetto lottery from Whitey. I also think it’s a relief to post [vent] on this site. But reading the comments from my fellow Amren brothers and sisters is what has saved my sanity. Dealing with clueless White people every day is maddening to say the least. Getting to converse with racially aware White people is a God sent.
“was the officier in compliance was BART’s force policy when he had his weapon pulled. If the answer is yes then BART needs to re evaluate that policy and change it so this type of incident never happens ao anyone again”.
You may be right Yellowman, but what you propose does sound a lot like the last 50 years of Americana. One accident occurs, and the killers become the ‘victims’, emboldened to commit even more crimes, and facing more ‘accidents’.
It would seem the officer in question should be charged with murder or more likely manslaughter. I’m sure there are already procedures in place for when these ‘accidents’ or mistakes occur. And to be honest, there needs to be investigation from outside the city of Oakland or even outside of California. The local authorities have a vested interest in seeing that a lawsuit is never brought to trial. Of course they probably feel an even greater interest in appeasing the ‘minority community’ (at the expense of whites) than they do in seeing the city can never be sued.
Putting the system on trial or white society on trial, is a little like blaming all people of color for the actions of a few criminals. Ok, a large number of racists and criminals.
Ho hum, I’ve seen this movie before. A cop who was doing his best in threatening circumstances is about to be put on a show trial/morality play, with two possible outcomes: 1) he’s convicted, then abused in prison, or 2) acquitted, and the ‘community’ conducts another riot. This won’t be pretty, not looking forward to it.
Any cops who may be reading this! Don’t make yourself the flavor of the month! Know that you have people out here who are who are “trying to get along” and we deal with a lot of abuse from “minorities” (not minorities when they gang up on us) on sometimes a daily basis. We try to be fair and polite and professional, even when pushed to our very limits. We appreciate the hard work you do in trying to keep us safe. Know that you have supporters out here, and please don’t get caught in these situations. It’s almost like they are manufactured to catch another man in uniform and make him the latest whipping boy for problems some people create for themselves!! If I had one dollar for every forked tongue sob story, pity party that I’ve had to listen to, from people collecting a couple of thousand in benefits every month, who can’t work a job because they can’t stay out of prison, I would take every cop who could take time off on a vacation. Good luck out there, we’re all needing it.
