Florida Defensive Coordinator Charlie Strong: Interracial Marriage Has Hurt His Chances of Getting a Head-Coaching Job

More news stories on Bizarre Racism Charges

Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel, January 6, 2009

You would hope that in this day and age when we just elected an African-American president that race would play no factor in college football, but UF defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, a black man, obviously believes otherwise.

Strong, when I asked him if his interracial marriage to a white wife has been factor in him never being offered a head-coaching job despite an illustrious career that has spanned a quarter-century, shook his head affirmatively.

In fact, there was one job at a southern school he interviewed for a few years ago when he says he heard it too many times to simply discard it as a vicious rumor.

“Everybody always said I didn’t get that job because my wife is white,” said Strong as he prepared Florida’s defense for Thursday’s national championship showdown with Oklahoma.

“If you think about it, a coach is standing up there representing the university,” he says. “If you’re not strong enough to look through that (interracial marriage) then you have an issue.”

{snip}

Strong isn’t the only one. It has been reported that one of the reasons Buffalo coach Turner Gill didn’t get the job at Auburn is because his wife is white. The job went to Iowa State coach Gene Chizik even though Gill seemed to have the more impressive head-coaching credentials. On ESPN’s “Outside The Lines,” reporter Mark Schlabach said two SEC coaches told him that because Gill is married to a white woman there was no way he was going to get the Auburn job.

Isn’t it generally assumed that any successful black man has (or is looking for) a white or light-skinned woman?

Two examples = Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears and Bill Cartwright former coach of the Chicago Bulls are married to (surprise) white women.

Who are the two coaches that told Turner Gill he wouldn’t get the Auburn job? A story impossible to disprove.

Here’s another black male that just figuratively kicked another black female in the teeth for rejecting a black wife in favor of a white one.

There are more black women single than women from any other race. Such a put down by another black male.

Perhaps the problem is not that his wife is white, but that Florida teams under Charlie Strong have not played consistently top-SEC caliber defense? Teams put up points on Florida, and always have throughout his tenure; this gets lost in the fact that their offense plays so tremendously.

I wish I could believe this article, but I can’t. Whites have a sick fixation on football and will put their racism aside if it means winning more games. The reason that blacks don’t get more jobs coaching is that most are not smart enough. One notable exception was K.C. Jones who was the black coach of the Celtics in the 1980’s. Black coach, White players on the Celtics back in those days.

Cry me a river. As late as a century ago, the kind of people then that are today professional athletes or high level athletic coaches wouldn’t be able to dream about having the standard of living they do today, they would be nothing more than manual laborers.

If he thought that having a white wife hurts his career track, then why did he marry a white woman?

I’ve been denied promotions since the mid 70’s because I am white and for no other reason. I am at the same classification and level now that I entered the agency back in 1973. Had I been black, hispanic or asian I would probably be a high level manager by now.

He didn’t get a promotion because he has a white wife. I never got a promotion because I am white.

What’s the difference?

At least his children and grandchildren can classify themselves as black on college and job applications and get admitted and hired.

My unfortunate children and grandchildren are white and thus denied college admission and job opportunities because the are white.

Well, he had to come up with SOME excuse for why he can’t get a head coaching job, right? And playing the ‘Race Card’ accomplishes two things; instills White Guilt and puts pressure on the NCAA to ‘Do Something’ about rectifying this obviously EVIL scheme to keep a White Wife-Toting ‘Brutha’ out of the system. Makes perfect sense to me. Watch for him to be named to a lucrative head coaching position soon.

I think there is a lot of truth to this. If Obama had married a white woman, he would never have gotten the majority of the black vote. They would have rallied behind Clinton. I think most of the regular posters on Amren know exactly what I mean.

Well what did the Coach expect?
He should know that nobody likes white people.
Next time Coach, and there will be a next time, marry a black woman.

10 — Anonymous wrote at 8:52 PM on January 7:

What’s he complaining about? At least he had the free choice to marry a white woman.

Since 1968, numerous federal government agencies such as the EEOC, the Justice Department and most of all the dictatorial Judiciary have been issuing orders that employers shall not hire me because I am white. I was born white. I can’t change being white. Yet our federal government has decreed that I am virtually unemployable because I am white.

So again, why is he complaining?

Charlie Strong and family used to live down the street from me when he was defensive coordinator for the University of South Carolina. They were nice people.

I believe the head coaching position he is referring to is that of University of SC.

He didn’t get the job because Steve Spurrier, arguably the most highly accredited coach in football today took the job, not because he had a White wife.

Ludicrous….

12 — RHG wrote at 9:22 PM on January 7:

I believe the real reason a university is reluctant to hire a black coach is if that black coach turns out to be not very good and the team has a losing record and the university decides to fire him then you have to listen to that black coach whine to the media that the only reason he’s being fired is because he’s black. Add on a possible race discrimination lawsuit and a university starts thinking why go through this headache.

13 — Mr. Pibb wrote at 11:59 PM on January 7:

Charlie Strong’s not thinking about the big picture. About, yes, ingrained stereotypes and institutional racism. He only needs understand all the methods of the oppressor. For surely then he’d realize that being a black football player grossly impeded his chances of finding a white wife in the first place. He needs to remain strong in the knowledge that yes he can overcome racism and persevered against a system arrayed against him. A few courses at the very University of Florida are just the thing Charlie needs to get him thinking the right way again.

I agree with GetBackJack. If Obama had married a white woman,
there is NO WAY he would be president. It represents a crossing of a line that shouldn’t be crossed. I’m sorry. It’s reprehensible.
Blacklist him,Yes.Fine another coach.plenty of good candidates.

You know what the irony is of black men marrying white women and having children?

Very simply black men are demonstrating a very strong preference for white women, for example Tiger Woods with his blonde blue eyed model spouse.

But the irony is that their children will always be black with brown eyes. Tiger Woods will never have a blonde blue eyed child with his model white Swedish model wife.

And for the white woman with black child, it is the end of the line. No more white children.

Howard, this is totally true. I’ve seen many whites, who in their personal life have nothing good to say about blacks, who idolize black football jocks. I have to believe that this coach has other reasons than a white wife for not being hired by a better franchise.

I wish it was true. At least it would show a racial consciousness that has declined in whites over the past fifty years. But I can’t believe liberal college presidents hold having “white” wives against black coaches.

There are two other truths. First, black coaches benefit in football and basketball due to racial quotas and a need of head coaches to have assistants to rap with unsociable, mentally unstable and often criminal black players. Second, that so many white women are willing to consort with and even marry blacks really shows the fair sex in a bad light.

What’s sad is I know white females who aren’t into black men, yet these black men put them on guilt trips or call them “racists” just to get “some action wit’ a white girl, dog”. Very manipulating.

19 — Kellie wrote at 4:46 PM on January 8:

Many, many blacks dis-like inter-racial marriage as much as whites. So was the decision maker on this man’s career, white or black? Its easier to slant the story to make it sounds as though white people were keeping this black man down.

Who knew liberals had a sense of shame? huh, I didn’t.

Marrying a white female did not prevent Alan Page, NFL hall of famer, from becoming the state supreme court justice in Minnesota.
Perhaps Mr. Strong should consider a job in the judiciary.

The author of the article, Mike Bianchi is not a particularly good writer and/or even particularly popular (outside of his close circle). As a Central Floridian, I will say most from my area don’t consider him anything more than a clown. He doens’t write very serious articles. Whenever I read them, they are usually rambling and poorly made jokes! It doesn’t surprise me, he is trying to build up social status points, by bringing back the boogeyman of “evil White racism.”

True, Obama would never have gotten the presidency with a white woman, (because of the black vote) but one wonders if his life would have been happier emotionally, or easier as black woman are historically known to be harder than h— to live with!! )Which is the reason so many of them cannot find husbands) Hold on to Barack, Michelle and don’t be so mean to him as there are plenty of white beautiful kind, intelligent women willing to take your place!!
