Concern Over Illegals in Public Housing

More news stories on Immigration

AP, Jan. 1, 2009

Untold thousands of illegal immigrants live in public housing at a time when hundreds of thousands of citizens and legal residents are stuck waiting years for a spot.

Illegal immigrants make up a tiny portion of the 7.1 million people in federal housing, according to government statistics. But authorities may be unaware of thousands more, and critics say no illegal immigrant should get housing benefits.

The issue made headlines in November with news that Zeituni Onyango, an aunt of President-elect Barack Obama, was living in Boston public housing while in the country illegally.

The federal government, which funds the lion’s share of the nation’s public housing, requires only that illegal immigrants share a home with at least one family member who is in the country legally and pay their share of the rent.

While there are no hard numbers on illegal immigrants in public housing, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that 29,570 people—0.4 percent of all those in federally funded housing—are “ineligible noncitizens.” Some may be on temporary visas, such as highly educated workers or college students, but many are believed to be illegal immigrants.

The HUD tally does not offer a full picture of how many illegal immigrants are in public housing.

It doesn’t include housing funded by state and local governments, where eligibility requirements vary. Massachusetts, where Obama’s aunt occupied one of about 50,000 state-funded units, doesn’t ask immigration status under a 1977 federal consent decree in a class-action lawsuit that prohibits the state from denying the benefit to illegal immigrants.

Some prospective tenants and advocates of immigration restrictions are angry about U.S. citizens waiting for housing aid that some number of illegal immigrants are enjoying.

New York City has about 260,000 people in line for housing aid. Chicago recently opened its waiting list for the first time in about 10 years and collected 259,000 names in four weeks for 40,000 slots.

“As long as that waiting list includes American citizens or legal immigrants, there’s no reason an illegal alien should occupy any of that housing,” said Rosemary Jenks, director of government relations for NumbersUSA, a group that supports curbs on immigration.

In San Diego, applicants are told they can expect to wait five to seven years.

Onyango, the half-sister of Obama’s late father, applied for public housing in 2002 while she was in the country legally seeking asylum from her native Kenya, said Lydia Agro, spokeswoman for the Boston Housing Authority, which has a waiting list of nearly 20,000 people.

Onyango moved into federally funded housing in 2003 and stayed there after 2004, when, The Associated Press learned, an immigration judge denied her asylum application and ordered her to leave the country.

Onyango transferred to an apartment funded only by the state, which cannot ask about immigration status under the court order. In November, her attorney said she was staying with relatives in Cleveland and would fight her deportation order.

In the mid-90s I had a disabled client, a native-born white American, who was interested in applying for the Section 8 program. We went down to the local housing authority to fill out an application.

In the waiting room was a couple in their 50s, Russian or Ukranian, who needed a translator to assist them.

At this time the waiting period for housing benefits was 3-5 years, with hundreds of people on the waiting list.

I have heard numerous times that refugees immediately jump to the head of the waiting list. It seems massively unfair to have foreigners gain immediate access to benefits that an American citizen needs to wait years before accessing.

That a “federal consent decree…prohibits the state from denying the benefit from illegal immigrants” adds insult to injury.

But then, has unfairness to native-born Americans ever motivated our overlords in the government, media, or academia to action in these past three or four decades?

There is no accountability anywhere in the federal government. Billions are either stolen or wasted and no one pays back any of the money or does any jail time. It’s time to turn back power to the states and municipalities. Disband the energy department which has yet to provide one drop of fuel to anyone. Get rid of the Education Department because the drop-out rate is horrific. Abolish the Housing Department because they ruin neighborhoods and lives. I could go on and on - - .

I attended my city council meeting where a public housing project was discussed. A person in charge of the project said that they don’t rent or subsidize units to illegal aliens. I asked her if they check the immigration status of the prospective tenants. “No,” she said, “we are not allowed to.”

With this kind of idiocy they are renting to illegals while at the same time claiming that they are not.

In other words, they can have, say, 50% units occupied by illegals while they are reporting 0%.

So the “numbers on illegal immigrants in public housing [being] 0.4 percent of all those in federally funded housing” is most likely a meaningless figure that is the result of the ban of checking of or inquiring about tenants’ immigration status.

What puzzles me even more is that this kind of systemic lying to the public does not result in mass firing of the incompetent.

Agree with all of above. I know the Federal policies encourage illegals to enter and live in USA for free. The data are not verifiable or defenseable. The erosion of USA immigration laws and enforcement has been bought and paid for by special interests. USA government has not kept promise of Consitituion to protect & defend citizens. In fact, the governments appear to be directed by foreign interests. How did we get here???
I wish I had time to research the laws, loopholes, and various conflicks of interest which allow gov agencies to breach USA citizens and their tax dollars that pay for millions of immigrants and their multimillions of children I have been forced to pay for at the costs of my own retirement and future.
I feel so deceived and betrayed. V

Why anyone continues to pay taxes in this country is beyond me. When will the masses wake up to the rampent abuse of thier tax dollars by the federal government? Our situation reminds me of a football game where a team does everything it can to give the game away and when the other team wins, the loser acts as though they can’t believe what just happened to them. It’s definitely time for change in the US but it’s not what Obama has in mind.

A poster wonders why the “systemic lying to the public does not result in mass firing of the incompetent.” This is a total misunderstanding of the situation. They are competent at lying. They are competent at displacing Americans with illegal aliens. They are competent at providing a new source of cheap labor, and an expensive source of new welfare clients. They are competent at providing those whose cultures are different from ours, and those who refuse to assimilate to ours. They are competent at destroying what is good in America. That is why the elite, who dominates out government, hires them. That is why the elite will not fire them.———-HM

Isn’t it absolutely amazing how tens of millions of illegal aliens can reap in all of America’s benefits while Americans and legal citizens of this country suffer and go without?

My husband and I are now paying $878 a month for health insurance while millions of illegal aliens enjoy this benefit free of charge but at our/taxpayer expense.

Our government is supplying corporate welfare for all of their wealthy banker and CEO cronies/donators and all of their much-wanted cheap labor - illegal aliens - while we, the law-abiding, taxpaying suckers, get stuck with the bill!

Governor Arnold along with many other governors are currently begging for up to $1 Trillion over the next two years! Rather than taking care of business - the massive illegal alien crisis in California - which would save us at least $10 Billion a year, our legislators slash state jobs, slash services and jack up our taxes all in the name of so-called “fees.” Heck! Someone’s got to pay for this Mexican invasion! It won’t be the corporations, and it sure as heck won’t be the invaders! Again, we the people are stuck with the bill; and who do we have to thank for all of this? Our very own government!

Something’s gotta give!

Some are, indeed. Some are outright traitors on behalf of their compatriots from Mexico and other countries. But most don’t. Those that I interacted with were not. They were just interpreting and following absurd rules like most bureaucrats do. They were making decisions that were exceeding their mental capabilities and/or professional preparation. And they didn’t even try to check if the final outcomes of their actions made any sense, never mind that many of them seemed genuinely unable to see the absurdity of what they were doing.

After all, what could you expect, taking into account ridiculously low grading and passing criteria in our public education system where teaching basic skills has often been replaced with liberal indoctrination?

It’s incompetence. If you charge them with lying, etc., they mostly will dismiss your charges, as they have done before, and the incompetence will continue.

Why are there even rules regarding ILLEGAL immigrants that we know occupy GOVERNMENT housing? It makes no sense!

These social workers have their diversity meetings, equality statements, and say they are concerned with providing equal access to all no matter what the cost. That’s their official policy. For some of them that’s their job, all day long, uncovering racism. Still, I’d be quite interested in knowing just what portion of the “7.1 million people in federal housing” are white men.

These sort of situations will not be addressed under the Obama administration, congress will ignore it , the news media will consider it as non-news worthy, our taxes will continue to rise and the Dems will be happy, government fraud and abuse is so far outta control now that its beyond any kind of control.

I have assisted people who were applying for public housing. The white handicapped people that I was with had to jump through hoops for any type of Government assistance they received. I honestly do not know how you could lie or falsify your way into any assistance. Unless the social worker is looking the other way.

What business does the government have, in using tax dollars paid in by CITIZENS, to subsidize public housing for crminal illegal aliens? Never mind that public housing also invariably is a hot-bed for crime, drug trafficking and prostitution. Our government leaders need to pull their heads out of an improbably part of their anatomy and start thinking… on behalf of the American citizens and taxpayers they owe their jobs to.

Be sure to think about it, next time you eat at a restaurant, particularly a fast-food franchise joint… . the greed of the owners for CHEAP (ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT) LABOR is responsible for the problems and costs the damned illegals represent to the rest of us Americans.

Something to also think about if you get a touch of food poisoning from eating in those establishments… thanks to the noted lack of sanitary concerns among illegal (or quasi-legal) immigrants.
