Alabama NAACP Criticizes Use of Trail Maids in Inaugural Parade

More news stories on Bizarre Racism Charges

WFSA-TV (Montgomery), January 12, 2009

They’re part of a long standing tradition that will soon become a part of Presidential history.

The head of the Alabama NAACP, however, wants Mobile’s Azalea Trail Maids to stay home on Inauguration Day, claiming the group reminds him of slavery.

“These are not just regular costumes. These are the costumes that remind someone of the plantation in Gone with the Wind,” Edward Vaughn said in a phone interview.

Vaughn went on to say the group would be the laughing stock of the Inauguration. County leaders say nothing could be further from the truth.

“We want everyone to know that these young ladies do not need to be identified with slavery,” said Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine.

“I don’t see what the dresses have to do with racism. I don’t see it. It’s just a regular dress to me. Just a dress they wore back in the day,” said Carolyn Tius of Montgomery.

Organizers stand behind the tradition, but opponents say tradition is the problem.

“We needed something that could show Alabama’s great progress rather than something that shows a shameful past,” Vaughn said.

I have heard the reason is that Obama himself wants to model his inauguration parade after Lincoln’s as much as possible. It has nothing to do with slavery, only it’s a period dress.

In the American ‘cultural revolution’ there can be only one history and the white man is to be written out.

“Organizers stand behind the tradition, but opponents say tradition is the problem.”

Black tradition good, white tradition bad.

Should toga parties be outlawed because the Romans had slaves?

If these dresses should be banned because they remind us of slavery then blacks should be banned from being seen in public because they remind us of crime.

I hope they kick them out of the parade. No White should celebrate the dispossession of our people.

Whenever these black activists want attention, they find a way to inject the charge or racism or slavery. Many at the NAACP and other black organizations have built lucrative careers playing the race game.

When Blacks are denied financial loans, racism is blamed.

When Blacks are given loans, and they subsequently default on the loans, racism is blamed.

When Blacks fail out of school, racism is blamed.

When “standards” are dismissed and Blacks are handed passing grades, civil rights leaders complain.

When Blacks are cited as leading the nation in rapes, homocides, drug abuse, armed robberies, assaults, all other forms of violent and non-violent crime, HIV/AIDS, all other STDs, illegitimate births, teenage pregnancy, and a host of other social problems and criminal mischief, the facts are cited as racism.

If those problems are ignored, the system is accused of neglecting Blacks, who are portrayed as “victims” who were “hardest hit” as a race.

Now, White America has taken leave of its senses and elected a Black man as president. As soon as Obama announces the attire for his parade, the entire thing is thrown back into the laps of Whites as… racism.

The best course of action is for America’s government to finish the Liberia Project started under Lincoln, and repatriate all Blacks back to Africa. It would be tax dollars well spent for *both* races.

I doubt that will ever happen, and I am certain America’s equity markets will reflect that more and more in the years ahead.

I collect Confederate postal history (stamps and envelopes from the Confederacy), slave badges, and other slave memorabilia. This material is fairly scarce and can be very expensive. The things I collect are neither good nor bad; they are merely part of our fascinating national history. I fully expect the day to come when my collections are declared illegal and seized. I also predict that any political will for the preservation of Civil War battlefields will wane, and the remaining battlefields will all eventually be paved over.

This Edward Vaughn of the Alabama NAACP s just showing his true color(s). And he doesn’t want anything or anyone else to steal the limelight or camera time from their Inaugural Ball(see link for a picture of Mr Vaughn proudly posing with a cardboard cut out of Obama, quite apt really).

“We expect a message to us from President Obama. The gala will also feature Obama Memorabilia and world class entertainment.
Make checks payable to “NAACP” and mail to the above address.

Some much for this election result being about unification.

Stories like this, of this ‘suggested change’.
Remind of me of ‘the frog in the boling water’ analogy.

You know, throw the frog in the boiling water and it jumps right out, but put the frog in the cold water , and slowing raise the heat and the frog stays until death, not noticing the gradual change.

The gentleman in this story hopefully has not much influence but ‘the shift’ in thinking he represents is real.
And the fact that his thoughts/views are given any airtime at all is disturbing.

Makes me wonder what exactly these civil rights activists/liberals vision for the world is exactly. Instead of going from A to Z slowly through the whole alphabet, I wonder what Z looks like to them, or are they just making it up as they go along?.

Once again, anything cultural that is white is fair game and a target to be destroyed because it’s “racist”. Anything black, no matter how foul and negative (i.e. RAP/HIPHOP), is something to be proud of and off-limits to criticism by whites because it ….would….be….RACIST.

Can’t win, we’ve dealt ourselves a losing hand and have accepted it as a people. It’s like we’re our own worst enemy.

12 — Ranger wrote at 7:57 PM on January 13:

“NAACP head says pretty Southern girls in hoop gowns remind him of slavery.”

I’m not surprised, since most blacks believe that Angel Food cake is racist because it’s white and Devil’s food cake is black. And how anout the numerous paranoid myths circulating in the black communities that say the white man is trying to destroy them with aids, drugs, guns, and he even went so far as to blow up the levees in order to drown the blacks in New Orleans, plus probably 20 to 50 other types of paranoid nonsense.

So, if they see a harmless kind of wardrobe that reminds them of slavery, then it just further proof of their mental incompetence and propensity for paranoia.

It’s nothing at all unusual.

These are beautiful dresses worn by southern belles. A country that forgets its traditions is not a country at all.

By the same line of reasoning (on the negative side) they should outlaw those baggy pants that black teenagers like to wear. You know, the ones that hang down below the crotch and the ball caps worn crooked and backwards. People who wear them remind me of gangstas and street hoodlums from the ‘hood. And they call this progress?

16 — Anonymous wrote at 9:26 PM on January 13:

Oh give me a frickin break!!!!!!!!! I honestly think blacks sit around & find stuff to complain about!!!!! Will it never end with blacks always whining about something???
Blacks need to learn their History, the real History of the South. But as always, anything to be used as a crutch to get money for nothing.
Blacks would not believe truth if it smacked them in the head.
If it was not for the South & their leadership, this country would not have ever been developed to the extent that is today. If anyone needs a History lesson, I recommened the “The Polictically Incorrect guide to the South” by Clint Johnson. It is a real eye-opener. It is worth its weight in gold!

20 — Southern Hoosier wrote at 9:50 PM on January 13:

Blacks and White liberals are constantly laying a guilt trip on us by reminding us of how Blacks were victims of slavery. Since being reminded of slavery is the issue here, perhaps all Blacks and White liberals should stay home from the Inauguration Day Parade, including the President Elect.

I’m sure the NAACP would prefer for ALL white people of BOTH sexes to stay home EVERY DAY.

Either that or just disappear altogether.

Since I know who the girl is, as well as who Edward is, my only regret is that Edward is not considerably more like she and substantially less like he.

If diversity were so good then why is it NOT BAD to relegate a part of Southern and American history to the file of non existence?

A couple of months ago I was talking to a native born Japanese Instructor at the University of Alabama. This highly educated and attractive young Japanese woman only vaguely knew that the United States and Japan fought a war sixty eight years ago; did not know what caused the war; and moreover, did not have a clue as to who Isoruku Yamamoto, Minoru Genda, or even Hideki Tojo were [of course if I were to ask United States High School students the same question - about America’s role in the conflict, or its leaders at the time, their answers would be equally ignorant- but American students are generally ignorant about everything excluding popular music, pornography, and text messaging].

Since World War II is an embarrassment to the Japanese, it is neither mentioned nor taught as a part of its history in school.

Similarly, if the NAACP were to have its way there would be no mention whatsoever of the mythological South or it’s attendant period of slavery.

And what’s this business about “moving forward” anyway? Since when is “moving forward” by definition somehow better than moving backward? If moving forward carries you to the edge of a minefield then perhaps you might want to re think this concept of always “moving forward” as always being the proper course of action!

No one at the time ever thought that this cute, white, fluffy little ball, would one day be sending this country I love straight to hell! In retrospect, I know now that I should have picked my own damn cotton!

Seriously now. Does it get any SILLIER THAN THIS? Every time a Black person looks in the mirror… it should remind him/her of slavery… that BLACK AFRICANS were held as slaves! If Afro-Americans are truly THAT sensitive to their now far-distant past… maybe they should consider relocation. TO AFRICA! Where they can show the world what miracles they can perform living among their own kind, rather than among White Americans.

That is about the dumbest thing that I have heard of yet out of this group. I think that everyone who said that blacks just want whites to disappear is right. We cannot celebrate our culture while they are able to shove what they call culture in our faces daily. I cringe when I see white young people acting more and more ghetto as the lowest common denominator is held up as culture.

Having Blacks in Alabama reminds me of slavery so perhaps they should leave and go home to Africa. Then nobody would be reminded of slavery and the Blacks in Africa would have no reminders either.

Most blacks are SHOCKED to find out that their ancestors were sold into slavery by their OWN PEOPLE. Ben Richburg wrote a book about slavery that dealt with his own experience going back to Africa to find his “roots”. He was quickly recruited to join some tribal conflict to which he wisely declined. He then had the good sense to thank the Creator that his ancestors were brought here.
After the principal character in the movie “Amistad” (Cinque) gained his “freedom” he became one of the more “successful” slave traders of that era. There was an article written for one of the American history magazines (I forget which) that may be found on the internet titled “Selling poor Steven” which documented the black run slave trade in this country.
We need to expose Alex Haley’s “Roots” series for the fraud for which it is.
