The Sapulpa Daily Herald did not report that Barack Obama won the Presidential election in its Wednesday edition.
One paragraph on the front page did report the majority of Creek County voted for McCain.
“This is not only national, but it’s also local. And this is our President; he’s President of Sapulpa also,” said Scott Gordon.
More than a dozen protesters stood in front of the Herald’s downtown office Friday morning to get answers from publisher Darren Sumner.
“I think that’s just blatant racism,” said Toni Delong. “If McCain had won, I’m sure he’d be all over the paper.”
Sumner says he would’ve done the same thing had McCain won.
“Our main focus is to be a local newspaper,” Sumner said.
He agrees the Presidential election is a big news event, but with a circulation of 5,000, readers don’t turn to the Herald for big news.
“I’m sure they read about it (the election) and watched it on T.V.; or got on the Internet and followed it as many people did and knew complete coverage before we were gonna go to press.”

“I thought it was poor journalism,” said Kenya Hill. “When you open the paper, you expect to see current events as well as historic events. And when you don’t see those, it’s a little disappointing.”

Of course Creek County, Ok. voted McCain. Every county in Oklahoma voted for McCain. I’m betting those protesters were not from Sapulpa. I can understand, though, someone named “Kenya” upset about the lack of glorification of the President-Select.

How DARE they not bow down before the Mulatto Messiah!!! I’m so angry I can’t breathe!
I’m reporting them to my hero Morris Sleaze -oops, I mean Dees- of the SPLC so this newspaper can be listed as an extremist hate group.

I sure hope Kenya Hill is able to get rid of his disappointment without having to seek professional help. If he can’t, there could be a possible lawsuit here. I wonder if there’s a lawyer to take Kenya’s case if it comes to that?

So people get the morning paper to read the news they already know? To have their pre-existing sense of what’s important validated? Then why have more than one newspaper in the country? Why, indeed, asks Pravda on the Hudson (NYT)? And if it’s “racism” to fail to report Obama’s victory with a huge banner, isn’t also “racism” to fail to vote for Obama? And if…

Ah, “Democracy” and “freedom” crica 2008! Now the mob will not only tell you what your newspaper cannot print; it will also tell you what your newspaper MUST print as well!
Here’s an idea - if you don’t like the newspaper…don’t buy it. Crisis over…
What sad times we live in.

As a retired (39 1/2 years service) reporter for a small-town daily newspaper, I can testify that far too much of its news hole was taken up with national and world news that the readers already knew about from TV, the Internet or metropolitan newspapers in the area. I applaud the Sapulpa editor’s decision, not for any particular racial reason but because he was concentrating on what a small-town daily newspaper should cover: Local news.

At first glance, it did seem to be a peculiar situation, a paper that didn’t report the presidential election, but on reading further — [“Our main focus is to be a local newspaper”] — I could understand perfectly.
A religious newpaper will report religious news. A sports newpaper will report sporting news. A trade newspaper will report trade news. So a local newspaper reported LOCAL news. What’s wrong with that?
It looks like we’re in for four years of paranoid touchiness at every imaginary slight. Oh boy!

I love to see people like Kenya wasting time on issues like this. Think about it. What can he possibly do to a newspaper that refuses to print the news on the election in the precise manner he would like it to be printed? Absolutely nothing. This kind of meaningless activity keeps people like him from doing something that might really be a problem for whites.

Let’s see what punishment would be appropriate for this insensitive and racist publisher? How about a public hanging or maybe they could take him into the center of town and draw and quarter him, right after he apologizes at least 100 times for his insenstive behavior towards Comrade Obama.

Note to the aforementioned: PLEASE, someday, read some US history books published in the pre-PC era. Hours of computer fun, searching for ‘em!
