Every January, descendants of Confederate soldiers gather in Wyman Park to march under the banner of the Confederacy, sing “Dixie” and lay wreaths at the monument to Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, legendary generals of the Confederate States of America.
And afterward, for 20 years now, everyone has gone across the street to the Johns Hopkins University for coffee and refreshments, with some of the 200 descendants and observers still wearing the uniforms of Confederate re-enactors and carrying the flag. But next year will be different.
Hopkins has informed the Maryland divisions of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans that it will not rent space to them. The Jan. 17 event is scheduled for only a few days before the inauguration of the nation’s first African-American president. The university received complaints after the march last January and says that it no longer wants to see the Confederate flag flying on campus.
“We’re not legally required to rent rooms to anybody who asks, and in this case we have chosen not to rent a room,” said Hopkins spokesman Dennis O’Shea. “We choose not to have the Confederate battle flag carried across our campus, particularly at that time of year, so very close to the Martin Luther King holiday.”

Members of the Confederate groups say they are victims of political correctness run amok. They say they seek only to honor their ancestors and that they have caused no problems in the previous two decades they have used Hopkins facilities. At first, they said, Hopkins gave them space for free. But then prices went up. The groups paid $375 to rent space in Shriver Hall last January.

The ceremony will go on. The groups get city permits to gather in the public park next to the Baltimore Museum of Art, where the monument of Jackson and Lee astride horses was dedicated in 1948. The seven-ton, 14-foot-high statue depicts the two generals at their last meeting, in 1863 during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va. Shortly after, Jackson was accidentally shot and killed by his own men.
In previous years, the ceremony has featured music from the Civil War period, a Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag, a salute to the Confederate flag, and a march from the southern end of the Hopkins campus down Wyman Park Drive to the monument. The march will be shortened this January so the groups do not step on Hopkins property.
“I can assure you there will be a celebration of General Lee’s and General Jackson’s birthday,” said Cummings, who counts 20 ancestors, including his great-great-grandfather, as Confederate soldiers. Lee was born Jan. 19, 1807, and Jackson on Jan. 21, 1824.
Cummings, of Towson, said the lack of a reception site will surely depress turnout because it means there will be no bathroom facilities, a particular problem because many of the participants are older.
{snip}
The Confederate groups say they have been misunderstood, and that the flag to them represents their ancestors who fought in what they call the War Between the States and the Revolutionary War. “You have a situation where we’ve let other people define us, and in the past haven’t spoken out as strongly as we should about other groups who have usurped the use of our flag,” said Michael K. Williams, commander of the Gilmor Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He acknowledged that Hopkins is a private institution, but he said that because it receives federal money it must adhere to federal nondiscriminatory policies when it comes to renting space on campus. Williams said his group is a federally registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Marvin L. “Doc” Cheatham Sr., president of the Baltimore chapter of the NAACP, said his association supports freedom of speech but that he did not have enough information to wade into the debate over whether Hopkins was denying the First Amendment rights of the Confederate groups. But he said the Confederate flag was a “despicable” symbol that stood then and now for segregation.

Lee-Jackson Day is a holiday celebrated in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the USA, for the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. The original holiday, created in 1889, celebrated Lee’s birthday. Jackson’s name was added to the holiday in 1904. Lee-Jackson Day is currently observed on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and results in the closing of state offices such as the DMV.

The city will find some reason to deny this group a permit to use the park. The city will remove the monuments. If that does not work thousands of protesters will show up and assault the attendees. This is now a Communist nation were freedom and liberty no longer exist.
“there will be no bathroom facilities” Funny thing. That line made me think. I have never stood up for or spoken out against many of the indignities readers of this site come across every day. But I have been more than vocal about being denied “bathroom rights.” To make my point before rambling on, I would suggest that the elderly people stop and urinate in the street when the need arises if they are denied the dignity of privacy and the most elemental of courtesies during this march. It`ll feel good… in more ways than one I promise. And when the news gets out that senior citizens were denied the common courtesy of having a bathroom made available, all the people will hear is “Old folks told to hold it in.” Not why. Everyone is gonna get a little older every night and everyone needs to use a bathroom every day. This one will win folks over, I guaren-damn-tee it.
For those bored or intrigued enough to read on about my own personal victory, here it is. I was thinking of buying an $800.00 antique display case. Every other morning I would drop in the shop to spur my saving for it on and make sure it was still there. One day I had to use the bathroom as the store wasn`t open yet. So I went across the street to a gas staion. I asked to use the bathroom but was denied, being told it was for customers only. In anger, need and frustration I told the man to sell me two cans of motor oil. He replied, “your just doing that to use the bathroom…” “Well that`s what you want!!” I shreiked. The man then used the fact that I had walked up to the station to point out my sneakiness and again deny my simple request.
At this point I was out of both patience and options. I walked around to the rear of the store in broad view of the busy street and began to take care of business, right behind that rack of used retreads you see at every gas station. At the time I was 30, the man was maybe 65 and his pump boy was 16 or seventeen. The man stood off from me but told the boy to stop me. In the sternest of voices I told the boy to not come near me, gesturing threateningly with my free hand. The old man demanded again for the boy to stop me. I told the kid, “Unh-uh, don`t you dare cowboy!” At the third and final demand from the owner, his young employee shot back, “All he wanted was to go to the restroom, You fu@7!6% stop him!!” The old man and I both knew I had won at that moment. I shot him a final look of maybe I`ll come after you when I`m done for good measure anyway. That sent him scurrying inside.
That day changed my routine in two ways. I no longer ask for permission to use a bathroom in a public venue. I just push past the employees only or out of order sign and lock the door behind me. I have also written many letters to the editor and city demanding the right to use a restroom in any public venue.(As long as it is not a home based business.) If you think this is off topic ask your self two things. Have many times have YOU been denied?!? And what was one of the major complaints about the early civil rights movement. Having the right to use a restroom, no matter what color you are… Or what your politics are either.
Actually, those who honor the Confederacy are a huge number of people, so they should be glad to withdraw their money from people who do not share their views, and give it to another area that appreciates their business.
In these times of tight money the jerks protesting are cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
As a Northener I have always felt that the South is probably the most interesting part of our country for a number of reasons but number one - they are the only part of our country that has known occupation. Just look around you today and ask yourself if we don’t have something to learn from them.
Anyway, I never had a problem with that flag, but now, this latest “victory” for Political Correctness makes me like it more than ever.
Is Robert E. Lee’s birthday a legal holiday in Maryland? If so, that will be one argument against Hopkins using MLK Day as a bromide.
He acknowledged that Hopkins is a private institution, but he said that because it receives federal money it must adhere to federal nondiscriminatory policies when it comes to renting space on campus. Williams said his group is a federally registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Even private groups that don’t get Federal money have to adhere to many “nondiscriminatory” policies. Ask any Restaurant owner in Mississippi circa 1964. Liberal law professors of the time made the argument that if a bird flew from Alabama to MS and “wasted” on the roof of the restaurant in MS, this put the restaurant under interstate commerce, meaning the Feds got to make integration rules.
The SCV have never understood the need to defend their own race. Now that other races are pushing them & their symbols out of this country they want to whine. well, good riddance to them I say.
i can’t imagine the uproar if we dare turn away black folk marching in honor of one of their fraudulent heroes.
The real reason Hopkins is denying them rental space is that they fear violence. Black violence, or even the mere threat of it, causes white Americans and white American institutions to turn and run.
We have become a race of cowards.
How many of these “unconnected” stories do Whites have to read before they see the pattern of genocide aimed at Whites? We Whites are being pushed out, disrespected, and killed off, and the best we can do is whine about this event in this town or college campus or this one over there. As a group, we’re fragmented and divided.
I cringe when I read some posts on sites like this from supposedly aware Whites who verbally defend “Western Civilization,” or “American values.” Please… start thinking a little more deeply than that. We are White people. It is our genotype and phenotype that gives us our true identity and it is these that must be protected.
I also cringe when I see supposedly aware Whites looking to Black conservatives as compatriots.
It is genes that matter. All else is secondary.
Here’s one yankee who wants to be wrapped in the Confederate battle flag when he is buried. I think I’m going to change my will today.
“It’s political correctness run amok”
God, I hate that statement. It is MUCH, MUCH worse than that! It is a concerted, organized effort to blot-out any trace of the “old,” that is to say, White America. I’m not big on neo-confederate causes as I believe we have much larger fish to fry if our race is to survive intact, but this is just naked discrimination, and White Americans, north and south, should simply not stand for it!
Under a “black” president, Whites will see more and more of the kind of thing described in the above article. At some point, it should be made clear that our Culture is unique and that we WILL protect it. If we do not make those things clear, then all is lost. Culture and genes cannot be separated. Not defending our Culture is the same as not defending our genetic inheritance. If we are not willing to defend ourCulture/genetics, then what are we willing to defend?
year in year out John Hopkins University Hospital leads the nation in most medical sub-group specialties, usually one department ahead of the Mayo Clinic of Minn. . With this p.c. cowardly move, their Orthopedic department has now failed badly, they are in need of a ” spinal transplant ” in order to get some new ” backbone ” to stand up to racist, anti-white Christian , Marxists and equality for all.
I liked the posts by JTP and this last poster,6:43AM….Until we start screaming as loudly and as often as the antis and the nonwhites do, then it will be a lost cause. Those Whites who are mentally deranged through the PC multicult propaganda will have to fall by the wayside. Most of their kind will never wake-up to any racial truths. Forget about these multi racial “families”. They are too far gone.
Steevn…
You should read the SCV Charter. It is not designed for the activity you advocate. If you want to politically defend the race there are other groups for that. League of the South comes to mind.
If SCV wants to get into politics, eventually someone — SPLC? — will sue to shut them down and take all of their assets. And that will happen. We used to have a SCV Camp here but we closed it down as the national leadership was moving in that direction. I think there is still a split in its membership and rightly so. A little research goes a long way. Apparently you are not a SCV member.
The Confederate flag does not stand for segregation. It stands for Southern Independence, as well as a higher standard of liberty sought by the South. The Southern War for Independence - aka “Civil War” - was a tragedy caused by the North. Let us hope for the day that the South will rise again!
To all who have been indoctrinated in the Northern perspective on history, I just got a book titled “The South Was Right!” that sheds the light of truth on this crucial historical topic. Everyone should read that book and unwash your brains.
Here is a sincere question for all you Southern folk. I was raised in the North, so I just don’t know… I was told that the novels by Dixon (the Reconstruction Trilogy, written sometime in the early 1900’s) were pretty close to actual events. Is this true?
Thanks for responding.
Patrick Keefe: I was given that book as a ‘dig’ by my son a few years ago. Totally fascinating, honest, and highly enjoyed by all those I have lent it out to. I also recommend it.
The continued attack on symbols of the Confederacy is one of the most disturbing trends in current politics. It was recognized for what it was and is by non other than Sam Francis many years ago, viz. a direct assault on the very notion of America as a European derived nation state and the attempt to replace it with a mongrel race of mulattos like the “president elect”. The Confederate flag represents far more than this to those with a sense of its history. It represents, ultimately, the attempt to preserve of our original constitution, that of the founders which was destroyed by the then new Republican Party of Lincoln and his cronies for the purposes of maintaining the outrageous exploitation of the South through protective tariffs and internal improvements (all for the exclusive benefit of the North). It was during the War of Northern Aggression or what was called by Jackson, the most gifted tactician of both sides of the war, “the Second War of American Independence” (the first such war being of course the Revolutionary War).
Hopkins has for many decades now been an overrated hot bed of leftist arrogance.
Its renowned medical school was not too long ago all but shut down because of unregulated research on asthma which resulted in the death of a research subject. Yet its physicians and even medical students strut about as if it were the very mecca of medical knowledge and science, which it is not. Remember that Maryland was once a state with very strong sympathies for the South, one which would likely have joined the Confederacy had it not been for Lincoln’s suspension of habeus corpus and arrest without charge or trial of many of its state representatives at the beginning of the war. It has since become just another Yankee, leftist stronghold, completely divorced from its proud past.
“We’re not legally required to rent rooms to anybody who asks….”
But you are legally required to rent irrespective of race, and you’re not doing that. What you’re doing is illegal.

First of all, the League of the South is not a racial group either. Also, I was unaware that you could get sued and shut down for merely advocating for the rights of white people. I don’t think we’ve gone that far yet. As to your local chapter being closed: it must have been a spineless, pc chapter to shut down because the SCV leadership has moved slightly to the right. I am a SCV member and proud of it. The only “split in membership” is between the vast majority of the rank and file and a very small minority who want to grovel at the feet of those who would just as soon see us dead.
Always a flap about the stars and bars, but nothing ever on gang graffiti.
Whether or not the South will rise again, the North is adamantly determined to fall.
‘Marvin L. “Doc” Cheatham Sr., president of the Baltimore chapter of the NAACP,…said the Confederate flag was a “despicable” symbol that stood then and now for segregation.’
The most segregated institution in this country, the black nightclub, is proof positive that old “Doc” and the rest of the blacks are just as desirous of segregation as are the whites who post at this site. Integration is the black rallying cry which allows them to sidle up to and derive benefits from whites, preventing American blacks from being left to their own devices in which case they’d live like Haitians.

For how long I wonder? The heroes of the South are forgotten, or worse yet, considered war criminals. as the country degenerates into a bunch of squabbling “nationalities” (mostly non white) in the disorderly house that used to be the United States.
Down here it is known as “the war of Nothern agression”. As you can see, it continues in its various forms even today.
That’s why we need to continue displaying the “Battle Flag of the Confederacy”.
Yes I remember a lot of thing about “the south is to rise again”, but I’m wondering “what would JESUS do”? Come on, you are making a mountion out of a mole hill. Drop the hold thing, we are American living under one flag and one GOD! Wake up, fellow southerner, I fought in WWII, I put my live on the line for my country and freedom and the right to speak my peace, so shut up and love your country, I’m white from arkansas just as much any one else with folks who fought in the civil war, so let the past go and go to church and pray, because GOD sent his only son to show us the way! I will pray for you…….BUDMAN
The groups get city permits to gather in the public park next to the Baltimore Museum of Art, where the monument of Jackson and Lee astride horses was dedicated in 1948.
This is what suprised me about this article, that the statues of Jackson and Lee were still there and weren’t taken down years ago by some PC political hack.
I used to live in Riverside, Ca. awhile ago, and in the downtown area there were statues of some of the men who helped built this city in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I saw not one statue of a white man standing. Yet the men who built and developed the city and area were all white.
SCV moved off the dime. The League was the only name I could think of at the time. Our chapter shut down as we were down to four members. Our experience locally was that members increased when there were threats to Southern Heritage. When there were no threats, membership and attendance slacked. We are a little place out in the country. Two larger cities not far away have more members and activities. We had more than four members, but the rest stopped coming. Of the four, two of us were the only ones that worked up the programs. For the full 10 years. Just us. We couldn’t get any one else to take over. After ten years of humping it, we asked ourselves ‘Whats the point’. Its time for someone else to take over. A not unusual experience in service organizations. A lot of people join to get the certificate of membership to hang on the wall and that’s about it. Get the magazine once a month and feel they’re doing enough. We had one member who was real proud to be SCV but never came to the meetings because the night we met was the night his squadron of the Confederate Air Force met. We used to have meetings at a restaurant but they became to expensive for us to rent a room. Another restaurant turned the side meeting room into an extension of the main room. Can’t meet and hear the program for all the people and noise. If we had a place to meet where we could have a dinner before the program, we would of had better attendance. One restaurant decided they didn’t want us meeting there any more. So we crossed that one off the short list of possibilities.
3:51, you’re proud of it. So are we. You should work up some programs to present. We still put out Confederate flags on the graves around here. Do you get out and do that? Or do you just sit at the house and get the magazine? Maybe attend meetings but never work up a program, work on a committee, or work your way through the various Camp chairs. Just sit back and let someone else do it?
I’m tired tonight so will call it quits. Catch you down the road and discuss this again.
Displaying or honoring an confederate flag is considered to be a much more immoral act than black thugs murdering and robbing.
