All drivers have cell phones. Go down to a line of taxis and find the driver you want. Ask him for his cell phone number. Most drivers have cards with them on it. Then find other drivers you want and get their numbers too. Now you will have a list of a whole set of drivers you would be willing to have carry your daughter.

Then when you need a cab, just call from your list and see who is available and nearby. No need for dispatchers.

you may laugh, but in the politically incorrect novel series “Stahlfront” aka Steelfront (till now available only in Germany) in the third installment this is described as the next step in affirmative action. You may only go to a white liquor shop / supermarket, if you can prove that you have spent the same amount of money in shops of the other groups, e.g. if you have spent USD 10 in a latino shop, and 10 in a black shop and so on, only then you are allowed to spend USD 10 or less in a white shop. Of course you have to visit the other stores first, because only the visitors of white stores are checked.

In the western U.S most taxi companies have a “latino” service. A different number all mexican speaking. But if you call the regular number you will most likely end up with a somali or ethiopian driver.

If you were to dare call up and ask for a white English speaking driver you would likely get no service or possibly be arrested for a hate crime.

Frankly, this lady sounds like a bit of a dingbat. I assume that a hack license in the UK is a prized limited-access privilege, just as it is in most large US cities. I doubt that your typical cabby, be he cockney, West Indian, East or Central Asian, or Somalian is about to risk his job and license to go on a binge of rape, robbery, or assault.

I’ve never had the slightest apprehension riding in a cab in London, New York, or any other city, whatever the race or ethnicity of the driver. People who worry about things like this are really unbalanced neurotics.

Usually not, but I have heard of instances in the UK where female passengers have been assaulted. There are high rates of asian/muslim on white sexual assaults there so I can understand her concern.

john at 6:06 PM: As it was Bristol, she was probably phoning a ‘minicab’ service. Anyone with a car can become a minicab driver and their quality is extremely variable. Our local one in outer London is very good but there have been cases of rape and indecent assault.

Do not confuse these with London ‘black’ cabs. A ‘cabby’ must pass an exam (the ‘knowledge’) before he can work and the standard is very high. They are overwhelmingly white.
